Cali30 owner here in the UK. Fantastic car, people really need to drive one before deciding whether it's a real Ferrari or not. It's different to a 430 or 458 but it doesn't try to imitate those models. The smile on your face all the way through your video is how I feel every time I take it out. Great vid as always.....
The California was sold in the US for model years 2010 - 2012, had 453 HP, and did 0 - 60 in 3.9 seconds. The California 30 added 30 more horsepower at 483 HP and was sold in the US for model years 2013 -2014. The California T (turbo) had 553 HP and was sold in the US for model years 2015 - 2018. The Portofino replaced the California T starting in model year 2019, has 591 HP, and goes 0 - 60 in 3.5 seconds.
I own a 2010 California Mirabeau blue with the crema interior. Beautiful car and gets lots of attention. However I get sick of people saying it’s not a true Ferrari. It shares most of its parts with the 430 and 458. It was fun to watch how you were skeptical at first and then your mind slowly changed as you drove it. It’s a seductive car. Definitely one of the better reviews I’ve seen on the California. Keep up the good work!
@@jkeaton1513 the Cali is the real Ferrari its as real as it gets . The only difference is the Cali / Portfolio are mass produced and more way more reliable 😂
Great review and thank you very much! I am 25 years old and from Beijing and I just bought a Cali. Ferraris are expensive in China due to the taxes and other issues, but a used Cali is under my budget. I totally love my Cali, a delicate balance between speed and comfort. Cruising around town at night with the roof open is totally elegant and mind-blowing! Yes, some may argue that it is not a Ferrari, but it drives and sounds like a Ferrari. Not everyone wants a hard-core supercar, right? My next goal would be an F-12 and hopefully, I'll get it in three years. Love from China!

I bought a 2013 Califonia in Miami last fall and drove it back to Canada, I can honestly tell you that this is the most comfortable sports car that I have ever driven !
Very cool. I was never drawn to these at cars and coffee but your review is very enlightening. A dealer near me has one for sale, a 2013 for $88k with 37k miles. That's a good deal if it's in good shape.
Great review! When these first came out, I thought it was one of the most beautiful convertibles ever made. It's good to see that it has enough Ferrari guts in it to make it worthy of the badge.
Love that red color. The seat leather color is nice as well, but will require regular cleaning and conditioning/protecting.In fact, those seats look like they need a good cleaning already.
I'd love one of these as a starter to get me into a relationship with ferrari/dealer would be a nice convertible and something the wife would like I think more than other models
Thank you for this great review Dan! I’ve always looked at the California in Kind of the same way that you described people saying it wasn’t a true Ferrari. You just changed my mind. 😊👍😎
Feeling like Ferrari targeted the Mercedes SL65 in 2009. Similar performance and price. Both retractable hardtop convertibles. Both luxurious, long distance and front engined. Both available in roadster configuration. Even weigh nearly the same.
I recently bought my first Ferrari which is a 2010 California and just like Dan, I have not been able to get rid of the smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel. Mine is in the TDF Blue which is my favorite Ferrari color. I also made a minor mod (via Ferrari Chat) where the brake lights are now part of the two top tail lights. Like the turn signals, the brake lights by default are by the turn signals as Dan pointed out. The car now looks more Ferrari-like with the middle LED and two top tail lights going on when you press the brake. With the openly honest reviews like Dan's, Doug DeMuro and JayEmm, the California is finally getting the respect that it deserves and is truly a great Ferrari Grand Tourer that will not disappoint when you get to actually sit in it and take it for a spin.
I like the car except for the way the exhaust tips are stacked on an angle. They need to be horizontal. The performance is there, so to hell with the haters. Also, it's made to be a GT car, not a track car. Track cars are fun for about an hour, then you want to see your chiropractor. I prefer a car I can drive all the time without it beating me up.
They are brilliant cars, a bit less intense than the mid-engined models but just as quick in the real world and more comfortable when you're just enjoying the ride. It's the styling that puts some people off, especially when Ferrari made no attempt to disguise that enormous rear, and in fact made it worse by stacking the exhausts, which just emphasises the height at the back. The later Cali T was a small improvement in looks but the Portofino is much more successfully styled. The PF is also 400lb lighter and has another 100+ BHP so it's a seriously fast car when you want it to be. The steering has also been programmed to be much pointier. But yeah, I drove the original Cali when it came out and as a driver's car it is by no means 'girlie'; it's less hardcore and so more accessible to everyone. Good review.
This vs the Maserati 🤔. I dunno 37 vs 70. They are probably fairly similar. Would be good to see a head to head comparison. You have friends with each! Make it happen!
I agree, this is Ferrari's version of the Maserati gran Turismo. I do love the looks of the Maserati Gran Turismo MC version. But I would think the Ferrari would hold a better re sale than a Maserati any day.
r1ver_rat 1977 yeah for sure but when you compare prices the similar year maseratis are almost maxed depreciated. They won’t go much lower. A similar yeared Maserati gt is in the low 30s. Would be an interesting head to head.
What's with that battery placement? A) Why would you not put the battery at the back to help with weight distribution? B) Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like a battery change is going to require the engine coming out??
It is a fantastic car! Let’s all remember that in the early days (1950) Ferrari built 4 cylinders and 6 cylinders front-engine race cars. 118LM, 121 LM, Monza, 196S…
@@normalguysupercar 2+2 also started pretty early: 1949 Ferrari 166 Inter Coupé by Carrozzeria Touring chassis 015S, 015 standing for the 15th car built by Ferrari since its creation. It is a marvel! The sound when the valves open is giving me goosebumps! The uncomfortable upright position in the back seat must be due to the rollover protection that is positioned near the passenger's neck. They thus force you to bend forward so that in case the sensors tell that the car is rolling over and the protection is shot out (ignited by explosives) your neck is not in the way. At least that is the official explanation for my Porsche 997 softtop. Might be the same here.
Hi Dan. Great review, one of the best about the California. I hope you develop this review path. Great car to have, maybe even as as second ferrari and one of my favorite Ferrari color.
Nice review! Always wanted to see a no BS review since they are so reasonably priced. Do a Portofino next!! Re the ashtray. It must be a European thing.. my Mas came with a cool "smoking package" that included a badged ashtray. Wife's new Beamer came with the same, just not badged.. "You can smoke, but no drinking in the car.." :)
Another great video. I find it funny how so many say the California is a good wife's car when so many dudes drive like their wives on backroads. We're having a grand old time on our sportbikes until we come upon exotic drivers parking it in the corners. They hit it in the straights, but your wife can do that too. I don't like the way the California looks, but I would not feel bad at all if a used Portofino was my first Ferrari.
It's fast it handles well. No turbo to worry about. Lovely profile, but front and rear styling not quite right. I couldn't own one. Will stick with my 328.
Great videos. But @1:15, “direct port injection” is not a thing. It’s either direct injection (directly into the combustion chamber), port injection (where fuel and air both run down the intake port and over the intake valve), or direct AND port injection (usually aftermarket on a DI car where the stock DI system cannot keep up with the fuel demands of an aftermarket super/turbocharger). The last is a combo of both and usually has twice as many injectors as cylinders. For example, an inline 6 would have twelve fuel injectors, six spraying fuel directly into the combustion chambers and six spraying fuel into the intake ports. Some manufacturers are starting to do the “both” thing to keep intake valves clean and lessen carbon buildup
Great review! Just an fyi... the problem with the placement of the taillights wasn't the turn signal location, but was due to the brake light which is also located where the turn signal is. DOT laws regulate that brake lights are not allowed on body panels that aren't fixed in place.
In my opinion, the best looking Ferrari of the last years Mid engined cars (except the 458) look too busy Allways liked the idea of a drop top Ferrari, albeit it has it flaws Mainly too much unnecessary weight from the complex hard top mechanism (and it makes the rear of the car too high) and it could do with a soft top, a v12 and a manual transmission to be a modern reinterpretation of the 250 gt california On the other hand, a used 1st gen Handling can be a great car
The main problem with the California is the looks especially the rear. For $100k you have a lot of options. I’d take a preowned Mercedes AMG GTCA for about the same price.
The California is quite interesting. Now in the UK you can find the California at around the same price as the F430s... so if I was to spend 70k I think I would go for the F430. But what makes it more interesting is that you can get an Audi R8 V8 Manual for 30k (GBP always)...
Great video. I would have loved to see a walk around outside, like in a parking lot or something other than your garage. But at least your lovely assistant was in the shot for a bit ;-)
I test drove this car in September when I was in the market for a car. Its a beautiful car and its fast. The one I test drove was a 2010 with 17k miles and list price of about $100k. I loved the car, but in the end, I went for the Lexus LC 500 for two reasons. I didn't want to own a Ferrari out of warranty and I didn't think it would be a good look to show up at work with because it would draw too much attention. Where I work, management isn't ostentasious. The only thing wrong with the car was the leather was pulling back from the top dash a little bit. Nothing that couldn't be fixed and I understand that its common for these cars.
After driving this and the Granturismo, do you feel any similarities? Asking because Pininfarina supposedly designed the GT but Ferrari took the design for the California when they ditched Maserati.
Drove this car for week, enjoyed it, I almost bought one. Then I drove a Porsche 718, and went with the 718. The 718 handles way better than this car, and it's a lot lighter as well. Plus the 718 comes with a 4 year warranty for the price of a used California with no warranty.
Dan and Megan's cup holder argument was very funny. Dan three hours of research and Megan Zero hours, LOL. That car would suit me and my kids. we are petite thin small people. Italians are small petite people. Our average height is 5'5" and about 150lbs. Although when I lived in Italy (with the US Navy) I saw very little exotics driving around all thru Sicily. I decided to buy the Maserati Granturismo because it has lots of legroom in the backseat, is also a good grocery-getter because of trunk space. My kids and friends enjoy the Maserati. Great unbiased review from Megan and Dan. I would buy it, yes, because it fits me.
Great review Dan - the C looks awkward from some angles and the hard top convertible thing has gone strangely out of fashion and fabric tops again are the go to - but it’s still a Ferrari - would love to see you review a Portofino for comparison
It is not only the weight of the Ferrari California that undermines the handling it is also top-heavy. The Ferrari California is a Ferrari with a wet sump 😳and that is why the engine is situated higher. Oil changes and checking the oil are going to be a breeze.

It's direct injection
those rear seats are not for dad bods; they are for hot thin models, so those seats are perfect to filter out those who do not qualify.
Generally hot models have legs... so they won't fit either.
Love Moe. I have a soft spot for basset hounds.
Great review! Just an fyi... the problem with the placement of the taillights wasn't the turn signal location, but was due to the brake light which is also located where the turn signal is. DOT laws regulate that brake lights are not allowed on body panels that aren't fixed in place.
Nice cherry color
Thanks
In my opinion, the best looking Ferrari of the last years
Mid engined cars (except the 458) look too busy
Allways liked the idea of a drop top Ferrari, albeit it has it flaws
Mainly too much unnecessary weight from the complex hard top mechanism (and it makes the rear of the car too high) and it could do with a soft top, a v12 and a manual transmission to be a modern reinterpretation of the 250 gt california
On the other hand, a used 1st gen Handling can be a great car
Indeed
Meg is the best, she is "cupholder prepared". More Meg, Less Dan.
Hey now...
The main problem with the California is the looks especially the rear. For $100k you have a lot of options. I’d take a preowned Mercedes AMG GTCA for about the same price.
Yeah the rear isn't the best
I looked at a couple sub 90k California’s, sub 60k R8s, and sub 40k Bentleys. Balls not big enough to pull the trigger.
Now they are even cheaper!
The California is quite interesting. Now in the UK you can find the California at around the same price as the F430s... so if I was to spend 70k I think I would go for the F430. But what makes it more interesting is that you can get an Audi R8 V8 Manual for 30k (GBP always)...
Yeah that is cheap for the r8
Great video. I would have loved to see a walk around outside, like in a parking lot or something other than your garage. But at least your lovely assistant was in the shot for a bit ;-)
Ah ok good point
I really liked your video! lol it’s very pleasant and very soothing for some reason
Thanks
Yes the leather tends to pull frequently in Ferraris, especially if you live somewhere hot
It converted your opinion! It must be pretty good.
Yeah I will never tease it again
After driving this and the Granturismo, do you feel any similarities? Asking because Pininfarina supposedly designed the GT but Ferrari took the design for the California when they ditched Maserati.
Hope you get to review the Portofino at 3669 lbs.
Yeah I want to!
Have seen a California for 93k canadian with only 22km not sure about how many miles that is but seems like a great price and deal
Yeah that seems pretty good depending on condition /options/year
I absolutely love these car reviews you're doing Dan. Please do more. (hearts floating above head)
Haha you've got it sir! :)
Awesome review Dan. I looked at these closely before choosing f430. Agree with those that said drive one first before calling it a girls car
Yes you really have to drive it to understand it
Drove this car for week, enjoyed it, I almost bought one. Then I drove a Porsche 718, and went with the 718. The 718 handles way better than this car, and it's a lot lighter as well. Plus the 718 comes with a 4 year warranty for the price of a used California with no warranty.
Different level of prestige and power.
@@Mav86asian real divers don't drive for prestige or power.
@@bladezero25 driver, not diver. I do agree that divers don’t need prestige or power.
You compared it to a 996 but what do you think of comparing it to the 928 of it’s time. It’s also a front engined grand touring car for Porsche.
I rented a Dodge Grand Caravan a couple weeks ago, and it has the same infotainment system. Parts bin special!
Lol!
Sick review Dan! Yeah the California seems to be a real Ferrari through and through!
Yes!
My friend has the regular one. They’re great cars. The color on this one is sweet.
Yeah I love this color
They don't expect you to sit in the back. Its for insurance purposes. Less cost.
Great review dan. Changed my view on calis
Yeah the driving experience changed my opinion for sure
Great review Dan - the C looks awkward from some angles and the hard top convertible thing has gone strangely out of fashion and fabric tops again are the go to - but it’s still a Ferrari - would love to see you review a Portofino for comparison
Hmm I hate the soft top convertible
It is not only the weight of the Ferrari California that undermines the handling it is also top-heavy. The Ferrari California is a Ferrari with a wet sump 😳and that is why the engine is situated higher. Oil changes and checking the oil are going to be a breeze.
