Someone once described their music as gentleman rock. I can't remember who said it but that's what I call it now. Fits perfectly I think
Jord Parke That’s a perfect description. Thanks!
Sounds like hipster bullshit from Brooklyn...so yeah
@ at least they don't sing with that hipster indie lisp...
a profession al quote maker first said this epic saying.
@ why are you here?
My Dad described them as a 'band full of substitute math teachers'. I laughed my ass off.
Turtle Lord hahaha I'd love them to be my maths teachers are you kidding me? That's fckn funny haha is your dad salty about them?
😂
I can see them that way XD
This is the best! :) Thanks for making me laugh.
Haha he’s kind of right!!!! Lol 😂🤣🤣🤣
I think they are trying to prove to us that they are not depressed.
This was great
If not 1 of them cuts their wrists', what then?
That's actually pretty funny. You're doing God's work son.
"Just go do some fun things, it will make you feel better"
Depression is a concept, we get told we’re depressed so we buy their shit to heal us! The truth is nobody is always happy, life is a struggle for a reason, music is the real medicine.
Heal yourselves with music.
Lyrically speaking, one of the greatest albums ever written.
Do you have any sources
I agree with you completely! I listen to this album almost everyday. It my medicine and my friend.
hard agree
I know I'm a year late on all these replies, but why stop at lyrically? The melody & instrumentation are equally amazing
"All of my thoughts of you, bullets through rotten fruit" That line particularly is magical
Graceless
Is there a powder to erase this?
Is it dissolvable and tasteless?
You can't imagine how I hate this
Graceless
I'm trying, but I'm graceless
Don't have the sunny side to face this
I am invisible and weightless
You can't imagine how I hate this
Graceless
I'm trying, but I've gone
Through the glass again
Just come and find me
God loves everybody, don't remind me
I took the medicine when I went missing
Just let me hear your voice, just let me listen
Graceless
I figured out how to be faithless
But it will be a sheme to waste this
You can't imagine how I hate this
Graceless
I'm trying, but I've gone
Through the glass again
Just come and find me
God loves everybody, don't remind me
I took the medicine and I went missing
Just let me hear your voice, just let me listen
All of my thoughts of you
Bullets through rotten fruit
Come apart at the seams
Now I know what dying means
I am not my rosy self
Left my roses on my shelf
Take the wild ones, they're my favorites
It's the side effects that save us
Grace
Put the flowers you find in a vase
If you're dead in the mind it will brighten the place
Don't let them die on the vine, it's a waste
Grace
There's a science to walking through windows
There's a science to walking through windows
There's a science to walking through windows
There's a science to walking through windows without you
All of my thoughts of you
Bullets through rotten fruit
Come apart at the seams
Now I know what dying means
I am not my rosy self
Left my roses on my shelf
Take the wild ones, they're my favorites
It's the side effects that save us

Put the flowers you find in a vase
If you're dead in the mind it will brighten the base
Don't let them die on the vine, it's a waste

The Video director: "Guy's, do whatever the fuck you wanna do.Just go crazy..."
The National: "You got it"
That is great, I wish they done more videos like this.
***** I've definitely had that happen before,
You are a genius. That comment was Epic. x)
I dont know if there is a band more capable of capturing emotion for me than The National. Their music lives and breathes inside of me.
Belle and Sebastian
The smiths
Have you ever listened to interpol?
Also Arcade Fire such a great band listen to their new album WE
"So we got some money to choreograph a music video."
"...Suits and beer?"
"Suits and beer."
great comment
"And slides- of beer."
"What about potato guns?"
"Sounds good."
$5000 on hugo boss suits $60 the rest
Genius!
Seriously, I've heard people say that they don't like the national for the lack of emotion.
How can't you hear the emotion in his voice? Every song bleeding with passion, it quiets my life.
I believe they most likely mean the more flat delivery that's characteristic of new wave or shoegaze. It's a part of the style of the music. Sure there's plenty of emotion in the voice, but the vocal delivery is "flatter" than other genres of music. Sounds more detached.
Got a friend, who thinks that the song is not emotional unless vocalists' tone rises every 20 seconds or something. Probably should take him to the pool with some beers...
@@daniilashurov135 "every 20 seconds..." lmfao.
Take him to the pool with the beers. let us know how it goes.
@@daniilashurov135 That is a great explanation, and I agree with you 100%
They’re completely insane
I listened to the song the morning when I got my graduation. I just stumbled uppon this song that day.
The National really finds you at the best times
This song reminds me a lot of my teens and early 20s, doing a lot of desperate and dire, unnecessary things to "find yourself". After the fact you realize you always knew who you were but were trying so hard, in vain, to express how you felt to others through actions. In the moment you didn't realize those actions not only misrepresented who you were but also alienated you from those whom you cared about, the people you were trying to get to understand you. That doesn't negate the emotions you were feeling, only that you weren't wise enough to know how to explain them; a tragic paradox that comes with maturity. The entire album feels like memories of important, often failed negotiations between self and reality; each track has this nervous energy and yearning to correct a charged, honest misstep. Reminds me of Mirror by Tarkovsky. A very mature album, glad to have found it.
wonderfully written! will watch Mirror :)
@@klarakandinsky8632 thank you! Let me know you think of it.
"Important, often failed negotiations between self and reality" Damn. I've never seen this summed up so succinctly. Thanks for commenting. This was meaningful and relatable.
@@dierdriu the more we divulge the more we can empathize and break the cycle of fear and illusion. Hold fast and be true!
😊😊😊😊
The most underrated band of the modern age
Ikr. But I'm glad Taylor Swift introduced her fans to this wonderful band.
yeah dude, but, it's better that way
could not agree with you more. Been loving them since 2006-ish i think it was. Can't wait to go see them again one day and to see what music this crazy pandemic has led them to create.
@@johns.6197 Hard disagree. The more people that discover The National the better.
Considering what is so hugely popular and selling insanely these days, I feel a lot of artists and bands are massively underrated.
I mean, you look at all the junk (not all of it, of course) that's been over-the-top successful, and then on the other hand, almost every week I find musicians on the internet who have a certain following, but I'm like, "Oh my god, how awesome is that!" and I wonder why I've never heard of it or only in passing.
I once had a professor tell me the quote "Grace is more devastating than judgement." Somehow this song embodies that.
I lost the love of my life to this song. I've never recovered, but I still love this song, and still remember Michigan nights missing her and smoking endless smokes to this record. I am sure I am not alone.
Hang in there, Bro!
Few songs adequately sum up what succumbing to depression actually feels like. This one is spot-on. I'm torn about it. I'm glad someone can write it out so artistically and eloquently, but I hate that other people know that feeling.
Something hits hard when an upbeat song is actually really deeply sad. I love the way that it feels....feels better than before I heard it every time❤
My sister has a daughter named Grace. When she is out and about doing her thing, my sister truly feels Graceless. Good song here.
Looking back, this is all I ever needed from the National, their whole discog aside. I've watched this when I'm happy, when I'm sad, melancholy and the spaces in between. It always works. Polite despair has its anthem.
"Polite despair has its anthem" is the pull quote of the century.
“All of my thoughts of you Bullets through rotten fruit Come apart at the seams Now I know what dying means I am not my rosy self Left my roses on my shelf Take the white ones, they're my favorite It's the side effects that save us”
Absolute poetry.
I cant put into words how much this band and this song mean to me... the band seems to speak directly to me through their lyrics.. this song (line by line) is my every waking moment.. I am trying to better myself right now, and the National's lyrics are medicine for my broken heart and mind. Thank you
The line 'If you're dead in the mind' gets me everytime. This song is deliciously dark
The National have always been a group who have grown on me more and more throughout the years. This song blew me away big time. It's so hypnotic. This was one of the 10 tracks I voted for in the Triple J Hottest 100 2013. Enjoy your time down under boys.
put this on repeat for like 6 hours
what kind of Habit is this? On Repeat on a single song
+bon2yan88 I have it too... I've done it since I was like, 5. It's how I sleep, how I study, everything. People always look at me funny when I play a song on repeat for hours. (Particularly this song!)
(murmuring lyrics, brainwashed) mmmph wut 6 hours wasn't that like 37 hours ago
+bon2yan88 It's also my habit too, repeat my favorite single song
“Put this on repeat for like 6 hours y’all” -Paula Deen
"God loves everybody; don't remind me"
that's some pretty deep shit right there
I’ve been lucky to see these guys preform multiple times. It’s definitely a emotional experience to see them up close and personal.
"God loves everybody yeah dont remind me.." LOVE THIS SHIT
thats what i thought too lol
I had a friend who had cancer, and I asked him how he was feeling, instead of telling he how he felt - he sent me this song, he has now passed and at the time leaving 2 little boys under 10 behind, he was 31 at the time - and I found the song expressed his feelings of what he was going through
I'm sorry, Judy. What tragedy The pain... The domino effect...😔
Reading these comments, it appears ppl think the lyrics speak to depression. Maybe. If the words provide solace... Like you, i think the song's about cancer (or ALS or any other horrid, painful, life-effacing neuro/cellular decay). I haven't researched the song's lyrical intent... reality never satisfies fantasy... When the body betrays us, it's very much like Bullets through rotten fruit indeed
@@juleetravers Matt has had many issues with depression, I believe.
The juxtaposition of this kind of self-deprecating song with this kind of video full of reckless, joyful abandon is just... perfect. Everything The National does is perfect. Even if you don't get it yet, give it time.
+Spencer Vik If there is nothing new compared to say 1981 or 1991, why should I give it time to "get it". Here there is a lot of Modern English but doing this 30 years later without any new elements is really bothersome.
+Boris Rangelov Modern English? Really?
nothing will ever be perfect
+Boris Rangelov how so?
Im not a big fan of them, however I love your description. You just wrote the perfect commercial for them. lol
"There's a science to walking through windows. " Amazing song, i love you guys.
All. The. Songs. Of. This. Album. Are. Absolutely. Amazing. The National is touching me over and over again. It's the only band which gives my goosebumps and makes me cry. The voice. The lyrics. The video's. The band. Simply GREAT
This is one of my favorite songs ever; even in 2019, it stands the test of time.
Mines too, masterpiece!
And even in 2020
Still the best
Just saw their show last night and Calgary at the Jubilee and they rocked the house when they played this one! Amazing
thank u The National, u make me dance and spin around with so much sentiment.
Hands down my favorite band for every day listening
I've just realized Scott smiles a lot...he never looks unhappy
Such a great band reminds me of being a confused 12-year-old listening to them with my older brother Louis, it made me feel so cool and close to him
I like how it's a sad song set to them chilling out.
I only found grace allowing Jesus in my heart. I used to loved this song, now that I walk to the Lord, this hits on another level
God I am so glad I found this band. My life would be incomplete without it ...
i didn't have a word for how i felt at times. graceless . tnx. - god loves everybody don't remind me - well said (when you can package your sadness, it helps you to walk away)
and its cool to see them with potato guns, guzzling beer and swimming in suits
When you can package your sadness, it helps you to walk away. That is a smart and true comment.Who wants to start a band?
Michael Greenwalt thanks man
They're just- I can't even- OH THEY'RE EVERYTHING AND MORE.
If you’re dead in the mind it will brighten the place
♥️
Forever true! Not sure why RUclips is hitting me with songs from this album today but welcome
The greatest "mainstream/known" band of today.
And lyrically, one of the greatest of all time.
I live right by there. Looks like an awesome bachelor party idea to me
Gosh, I'm 19 and heard this for the first time when my father was playing it then fell in love
I've seen The National live twice now, and I can say very comfortably that their songs sounded even better!
THIS IS THE GREATEST NATIONAL SONG OF ALL TIME
I agree, although that's freaking saying a lot
I agree 😊
That house... the pool in the back yard... I believe it's the same as the one seen in the 2014 Québec movie "Tu dors Nicole" starring Marc-André Grondin and Julianne Côté... 👍
i'm really hearing some joy division influence here. thumping bass, ambient melodies... this is good shit.
there is something about a drinking adventure with friends where you are still drunk when the sun comes up and the fresh grass is being cut by a lawnmower at the local school or suburban households. They nailed it
Oh, the days of smelling the grass in wee-hours. Had a girl back in the day that had a summer college gig at a local golf course mowing. We would party all night and get stupid. I would amble (somehow) home at dawn-ish. I would then bring her something to eat at her break. Memories😁
I love this band and his voice. I owe money gets me every time. I know it's not this song! Thanks
never, I'm never going to get tired of listening to this song ... the first time I heard it was because my crush told me to listen to other genres of music and chose this song and automatically loved it ...
I imagine "Mistaken for Strangers" the movie to look exactly like this.
I truly love these words I love the whole song everything about it's but those words they speak to me man
EVERY TIME I WATCH THIS I FALL IN LOVE HARDER
*My wife showed me this song and it hits so hard i miss her so much she go back with his family in another country*
Just spare a thought for Matt's parents, watching them do this and thinking "my forty year old son called and asked if he and his serious intellectual band could make a video at our house, this being his job and all, he's an artist, and now there's beer and drowning hippies in my pool."
Video was filmed on wesselman rd cincinnati ohio...they hit it big and moved ...great band....there parents are awesome down to earth...lost a great neighbor but I wish them the best with there success 🤟🤟
I can listen to this again and again ... and I am. :D
To hear The National's music feels to me as if I'm reading Raymond Carver. They're both subtle, profound and poetic said.
I had a big smile on my face watching this :D LOVE the National
Me too
This music touch me. So deep, strong and warm feelings always I am listening the National.
I'm with you :D
OH I love this so much! Mum goals.
So this is what rich and talented musicians do on their days off.
I never heard of this band until I seen them on SNL. I guess Saturday Night Live still serves some purpose
Where you been the last four years?!
DanimalLawlz Not hanging out with hipsters I guess

BOOM ROASTED!

DanimalLawlz Where have you been for the past 12 years? Their self-titled is amazing!
As the saying goes: You can dress them up, but you can't take them anywhere. Another great song with an off-the-wall video that fits it perfectly somehow.
This song has helped me with my bipolar disorder... so powerful
This is one of favorites. i love The National. Their music consistently impresses me. Beautiful.....

"God loves everybody, don't remind me" God doesn't have good taste. Beautiful song.
Great video! Incredible talent weilding music in need for so many. Really enjoy what all these people are putting forth. Bring us more!
Great Band and great video! Wonderful concert in Milan last July! I love their music...
Someone else thinks that this is all about being dead?... Think, they are all dressed in black, the old man seems not to notice all the reckless things they are doing, and the lyrics... talking about dying, bringing roses(to the graveyard?), walking through windows , I am invisible and weightless,.... all the lyrics seems to revolt around it, i dont know, am I just crazy? Someone who thinks the same?
That makes a lot of sense to me.
Reminds me of when my mother was slowly dying of cancer and after she died, how I felt. It felt like a part of me died too, but not now. Grace. You aren't crazy at all!
Or comfartably numb on medicine/drugs
CottonMouthJoe Yeah that is usually involved with a slow painful death process 😷 Or other stuff
This song will always hold a special place in my mind. It’s music like this that keeps us alive and kickin’
the soundtrack of my existence, thank you Matt B.

Feel so bad for anyone who hasn’t discovered The National yet
You cant imagine how i raise this . . . faithless
so, so, so, sooo good!!
So much the modern joy division here but better. It's today and what i long and wish for
,Always the innocence welost

Baby, we smashed that bouncy house.
I love the subtle scream vocal layer and how it's brought up more towards the end.
One of the best videos of the World.
Sometimes I can’t express the feelings I’m going through, but then I think about how so many people feel the same way. We are all together. I know it’s insanely impossible but here we are

Those gothic synths are fantastic.
Gothic?
Yes. I'm not saying the band is gothic, if that's what you're thinking. Gothic synths are heavily used for the verses and as a support for the bass. Are you familiar with the characteristics of synths? specifically gothic ones?
Sorry, I'm good with music. But I sort of understand what you are saying, sorry for the misunderstanding.
