I love what you said about the 5D Mark 3 Tony. (the fact that you would crop in for wildlife and actually everything would appear less detailed for it). Old tech is old tech. This camera seems PERFECT for wildlife/sports.
The best thing that I love about this 7D is I'm really hoping it will force Nikon to come out with a D300 replacement. I have a D800 which is a compromise camera. Most uninformed people think as full-frame an upgrade, it is for certain style of shooting and different reasons but I'm a crop=sensor addict for wildlife shooting. Would you consider trading your car for a truck as an upgrade? Nope, just different purpose. The only thing that held me back from a D7100 was the stingy buffer. I'm really happy for the Canon shooters to finally receive their wish. Happy shooting :)
As an example of someone who finds the articulating screen on the 70D invaluable - astrophotography. That flip screen makes shooting with a telescope so much better.
I really enjoyed this , the 7D MkII is something I have been looking forward to since I got my used 7D and was blown away by it's superiority for wildlife and other fast action shooting when compared to my 5D MkII. I will be getting one of these as soon as I can, the ability to autofocus with even just the centerpoint at f8 has me excited , not to mention the new AF and hyper frame rate with that bigass buffer!
Thank you for the complete review on this new camera. I have put in my pre order and I'm excited to get my new camera. The 7DM2 sounds like a great camera for my needs. I shoot action and wildlife shots, so this will be a great upgrade from my worn 50D. I'm looking forward to trying the new camera out.
Tony you said around 7:00 that cf is faster than sd. i herd different. please explain. I saw a video that said that cf cards are more bcuse sd is the way to go because they are faster
cleyvosier High-end CF cards are faster than SD cards, but both cards are constantly upping their transfer speeds. I generally prefer SD cards (smaller, no pins to break) but when I need speed, CF is still the way to go.
Thanks for the review. You said you were disappointed it does not record RAW videos but on 10:44 of your preview, it shows options to record ALL-I compression method which compresses one frame at a time and thus suitable for editing. Did I get it wrong? Could you explain this? Many thanks.
Raju Gurung Raw video records raw data from the sensor, allowing lossless changes to exposure and white balance. All-I still records the camera's processed version of the raw data.
As a music photographer, this camera with its high iso capability, great af, and fast drive mode, paired with the Sigma 18-35 1.8 and the 24-70 2.8, sounds absolutely perfect.
Hi Tony! Maybe i'm wrong but i think you cant get 14MP out of the 5DIII if you crop it to the same focal length. Isn't it 22/(1,6X1,6)=8,5? For example if you want to digitally zoom 2X, you have to quarter the resolution. I guess this is how it works, am I wrong?
Péter Sági Crap, you're right. I briefly considered whether I needed to convert a one-dimensional metric to two dimensions, and chose not to... but you're right, that I need to. So that exaggerates the benefit. I'll annotate the video and I've added it to our list of corrections for our next news segment, which should air tomorrow (and credit you for catching this). Thanks!!
Tony Northrup you guys can worry about pixels after cropping etc but the proof is in the pudding. The physical quality of my bird images cropped on a 5d mkiii are far sharper and less grainy cropped than uncropped photos on the 7d. Biggest issue I have with the 7d is the enormous amounts of grain and noise even on slightly cloudy days and mornings and that's when the best light is happening. Maybe with a 500mm F4 the grain on the 7d is less. Tony can you answer that question for me? It would make sense that F4 would make a 7d a little bit better on a days when it's not perfect conditions. Anyways if the new 7d mkii is less grainy and better in lower light that would be a good reason for me to buy it otherwise my setup is a 500mm with f4 lens and a 1.4 tele.
This was really helpful! I appreciate both of you making this video the way you did. I had a 7D (until it got wet and had to be "junked out" by Geek Squad) and still own my 10-22mm, 15mm, 50mm f/1.4, and a 400mm f/5.6 and fully intend to keep doing surf and wildlife photography. I feel a lot more confident about waiting until the 7D mII comes out to get it thanks to your video!
7D is my favorite camera which I picked up for under grand late in its sales cycle and now they've made it even better - but I like the 7D to the point that I'll probably hold off.
Getting a new camera. Stuck between a 70D or a T6s. What would u recommend would be a better option if I'm using it for studio portraits and kids outdoor moving around, not sport's.
I was wondering about the t6i Vs the 7d when using the canon 400mm fixed lens for wildlife photography? I'm new to photography and want to know which would be good for a beginner but at the same time don't want to have to buy the 7d later if it's not comparable. Thanks for taking time to read this and love watching you and Chelsea.
Dear Tony, do you think the rumoredD9300 will compare more to the 7D mark II for sports and wildlife photography, Nikon is due to release a more "Premium DX camera soon
I use to be a fan of Nikon about 10 years and switched to Canon. I have had the 7D for about 5 years and still love that camera. I also purchased the 5D mark III recently and its a great camera as well. I was hoping to see a better comparison between 7D and 7D Mark II rather than promotion for lenses or comparing brands. I have used and tested many off brand lenses and their performance lacks in focusing specially when shooting high speed. What good is a lens when u take 10 shots and 2 are out of focus.
Please help! Im confused. I looking for a cam for professional photography and video. It will be mainly for reporting. Need something for low light like concerts, conferences, or Dtheater. Nikon D750, 7D2 ou Sony A7s... I cannot choose!
With all the people complaining of focus issues with the 7D ii, I'd like to see how one properly tests a camera for front & rear focus issues. BTW: Great review!
Hi, thanks for this. I found it really useful. I like taking wildlife and sports photos (not video yet). I was waiting for the 7D mk2 but bought the 70D earlier this year. I was wondering if I had made a poor decision until I saw this preview. I am glad that I went for the 70D because for me, the wifi and flipscreen are really important - though I would like the improved frame-rate and focusing ability of the 7D mk2 - perhaps I will wait for the 7D mk3: it may have it all!
I wonder if the compass is smart enough to adjust the metering... ie if it knows the time and location from GPS, and knows the direction you are looking, it will know where the sun is relative to the frame. It could use that info to adjust for hard back or front lighting... Maybe I'm over-thinking it, but I can't think of many other uses for it!
The autofocus system, dual card slots, build quality, and FPS are impressive. Is this a camera that would excel in wedding photography, or would you still recommend the 6D for that? I am looking for a second body to my 5D3 and could go either way on this. Obviously I love the full frame IQ, but there are a lot of things that I consider "better" on this camera then on the 6D, the AF system and dual cards slots being the most important. Thanks!
Hello, I am planning to get the 7d Mark ii , I need you recommendation for which lens should I get. I am comparing between : " Sigma 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM " & "Tamron 16-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD MACRO Zoom Lens " I choose them because I need all use lens . thank you
Nice review as always. The 10 fps is interesting as are the focus points. I have the 70D but I will be holding on to it. I wouldn't give up articulating touch screen and wifi for this at a higher price. I shoot a lot of wildlife but I think the 7fps will be sufficient for now. I also have the 6D and really miss the touch screen when using that camera.
I am just getting into photography and have a Nikon 3000 and plan on buying the Canon 7D mk2 but The Nikon 750 also is for sports and wildlife from what I have seen.
Tony, I own the Nikon D7100, and I can tell you that the RAW buffer is 6 shots, not 15. It's on the Nikon specs sheet too. If I wasn't upgrading to the Nikon D750 I would strongly consider picking this up.
Dunno how you conclude the sensor is so great. Doesn't matter if you used raw, the image is still processed and it looks like the software did a lot so smoothing. Also the shadows looked more blocked up compared to the sony.
The 5d MKIII destroys the 7d in all areas as far as picture quality. The full frame sensor will always be better than a cropped sensor in detail. In low light the 5d MKIII is far better. I CANNOT even use my 7d on an overcast day for nature or birds in flight as there is so much noise and grain it's terrible. I am sure that the new 7d MKII has a better autofocus and ISO than the prior version but there is no way that a smaller sensor and lower ISO will ever come close to 5d MKIII. I own the 7d and 5d MKIII and the proof is in the pudding.
One advantage of the 7D Mark II is that it can dual record to both SD and CF Card for VIDEO. Previous Canon DSLR's had two slots but could not dual record for video, only for photo. So glad Canon added this feature for video. The first DSLR to do this was the Sony A99.
Nice camera.. Until yesterday I was determinated to buy a 5d MIII, but now I didn't know. The 5d is full frame, what higher ISOs means. But the 7d is perfect for video (60fps and the new AF). And I want a camera for taking photos and videos. Maybe I should wait on the 5d MIV, and hope that Canon put that good stuff form the 7d into a 5d..
What is the ultimate camera for macro photography ? I currently have the 7D and i really like it but i have been saving for an upgrade. Because i have Canon lenses so my only option is Canon. So i think my choice is between 5D Mark III and 7D Mark II.
good video. Wow. Liking the flat screen in the background. New studio. New flat screen. New bangs. :D Thanks for the info. Waiting eagerly for the next 5d, or next FF to compete with the d810.
Hi Tony, I have a Canon 70D, however I would like to ask you, if really worth making the change to Canon 7D Mark II ? P/D. I bought your book and this really help me to improve my knowledge and abilities
Luis Humberto Garcia Oh, not for most. But if you're a serious or pro sports or wildlife photographer, those upgrades will definitely get you better shots.
Amazing in-depth live coverage, using public information only but also all this knowledge accumulated :) I'm curious to hear more about the Samsung NX-1 as well, however the samples available to date are very limited, and 4K video shared on RUclips too heavily processed to tell anything.
Would the 7DII + EF 100-400mm + 2x extender be a good combination? I have the lens already, but I am not satisfied with the reach. I hear you can get into AF-trouble with a 2x extender. Would I be able to take any usable pictures in other lighting than high noon with this combo?
Stian Sæther You don't get any extra sharpness by adding an extender to the 100-400. If you get the 400mm f/5.6 prime, you'll definitely get sharper images... I sold my 100-400 after 11 years for the less expensive prime, and I'm SO happy with it. This is relevant: Tamron 150-600 f/5-f/6.3 Review: The ultimate wildlife lens for $1,000?
I would say that is a terrible combination. To my knowledge the EF 100-400mm lens is at f/5.6 on the 400mm end. extenders steals light. 1 f-stop for the 1.4x and 2 f-stop for the 2x extender. Auto focus will only work with 1.4x extender wich will make that lens combo an f/8 and limited to only the center AF point. We need to see some test pictures of the noise level of the new 7D but the increased ISO range suggest a better noise level on the new camera. I'm pretty sure you will be able to produce higher useable ISO pictures than the old 7D. I would say like Tony that you proberly will be happier with a longer lense rather than a new camera. If it is more important to be able to crank up the ISO or lower light capable AF a new camera might be the way.
How can you get 15 RAW from Nikon D7100? I can only get 10 frames even I've turned every automatic correction functions off, such as distortion control, shoot at 12 bits compressed raw in 1.3 crop mode. If you have turned everything on and shoot 14 bits uncompressed raw, then you should only get THREE frames before the buffer fills.
Hello, Im planning to buy a new camera to take sports photography, in fact tennis photography, I was thinking about the Canon 7dmk2 or sony a77 mk2, can anybody help me to decide?.. I think that canon has a better AF system, but sony has some interesting features like electronic view finder, steady inside, etc.
Love you two, keep it up. The headphone jack is def a big perk for video peeps if you're shooting video with a decent mic recording the audio through the camera and need to hear and watch the levels.
As is the case with your books and videos, this video is well thought out with great detail. Thank you so much for this in depth objective analysis. One suggestion though - the audio on Chelsea's mike seemed to have lower volume than Tony's making it hard to hear her important comments clearly. Thank you!
Great show as allways. Have been waiting for the past year for Canon to break new ground and I am very disappointed and agree 100% with your sentiments regarding this camera. I have been waiting for more that 18 months to buy a new system after having sold all my Nikon stuff and was really keen on jumping on the Canon wagon..... but not so sure anymore. Have just looked at all the news from Photokina and the Samsung NX1 really surprised me. It actually ticks ALL the boxes you say you are missing on the 7D M2, and as far as I can tell with a better sensor. This combined with the 16-50mm f2-f2.8 and the 50-150mm f2.8 whats not to like. I would have sworn that I would ever consider going for Samsung for my serious camera, but now I am not so sure anymore. Would love to hear your take on the matter. Thank you for a great show every week from a humble guy in Denmark best regards Michael
Tony you should do a comparison review of 7D mk II and Sony A77 II 10 fps. vs. 12 fps 65 AF points (all cross) vs. 79 AF points (15 cross) 20.2 MP vs. 24 MP
I read about the Samsung NX1 review request in the comments here a few days ago... and being the snob that I am, dismissed it as it is from Samsung... but just chanced upon the promo video and the specs for this camera and WOW! If it's as good as advertised then this camera blows everything else away. It's a photographer's dream camera... with all the things you'd write on a wishlist... if it lives up to its specs...
@Tony& Chelsea: Thank you very much for your preview. Once again: Really amazing presentation skills - always a pleasure to watch you both. There's a point I still can't agree: It's about the sensor. I have several infos showing that there has been significant improvements done compared with the 70d. Specifically in the area of noise. If I can shoot at about 400-800 ISO resulting in the noise of the 70D at 100-200 ISO, it's probably a buy for me. I really find some conservatism of canon very sad what results in a NON-touch display and also fixed display.
Tony Northrup Thank you for your answer and therefore for your time. Actually they were jpg's without (they say) noise reduction. But also when we don't have the definitive proof for the noise amount, it's still too early to say: "Same noise-story like 70D / 700D", specially because Canon states (I know there's always marketing involved): "Thanks to its improved, higher sensitivity photodiode construction, CMOS circuitry, and color filters with higher light transmittance, the EOS 7D Mark II records both still and moving images at higher ISO speeds with remarkably low noise, making excellent low-light photography and moviemaking possible." After such a statement it would be a joke to deliver a 2000$ cam with more or less the same noise amount as a 700D / 70D. I'll look for the link tomorrow, it was on a polish website I found over an forum.
Oliver Liu Here a little add on: RAW comparison showed less noise in dark areas when you don't have enough light. Actually the noise in bright areas was comparable with the 70d. In the mentioned dark areas the less noise let's you at the most have one ISO level up to reach about the same noise level as a 70d. I think the actual improvement is about 2/3 of a stop. Not that much, but also we shouldn't expect a 7d MII having 5d MIII noise ratings. No touchscreen is disappointing and also not very cool that we won't be able to move the screen.
ANSAR BASHEER With the center AF point only, yes. You'll see just slightly more detail than you would without the TC, so it might not be worth it. I generally don't use a TC with that lens and a crop body.
Hey Chelsea and Tony! Just started watching your stuff and love it. I have a question... for you. I have been shooting with only a 3 year old T3I and collecting glass (24mm-105, 55-250mm, 10-18, 50mm, 18-55mm) I mostly shoot sports in low level light, canyoneering with wet conditions, and nature and landscape). Until now I have only been using iphoto, but when recently make some magazine submissions and had trouble manipulated my file to the correct size so I changed to Picasa. All I really need to do it re-size, crop, water-mark, and transfer to Facebook etc. 90% of the time. I don't really wanna spend money on a subscription to LR every month. I just don't like the idea of being locked into a payment plan that never ends. Do think I'm good with Picasa or do you have another suggestion? And oh yes....I just bought myself a 7D MKII and got a bonus battery grip!!! What are the best batteries for it? Thank-you so much, Clay D
hello! you are awesome Mr. Northrup. I like your unbias reviews on many cameras that I've seen. I am buying a camera, my first professional camera, i like to add that i have worked on film many times just not behind the camera, regarding indie film style as well. After buying a sony camcorder and returning it since the Sony guy had me think it was perfect for my needs and better vs dslr options, i bought a canon 6D. So my question over all is, is this a good buy, and for my needs as well? I am mainly interested in cine style filming, so not to do much with sports or wild life, unless a pick up b-ball game will be in a film or a cat dog mouse chase. I will be recording audio separately, of course, and managing lights externally so internal flash is also optional. I was suggested the 70D, who had advised me of the week out release of the 7D at the time, but said 70D would be best option. i almost bought it but went with 6D since i thought 7D was also FF. Wasn't tho so I went with 6D. Now after watching this review of 70D I am curious if this will be good, because of your mention about the center focusing and i guess focusing in general.. Thank you for your education over all, you are a great addition to the 'google it' university..
Wondering with more people using video and pulling stills from 4K are these stills cameras relevant, canon needs to have an answer to the Sony A7s,i really hope canon does as i have alot of Canon glass, great review, thankyou.
Yervand Papazyan We did get a contact at Samsung, however, they don't have any loaner NX1s available. If you can find a way to get us a kit, we'd love to review it! :D
For the prices they charge, they should be able to put a larger buffer. what is so hard about putting 4GB of DDR3 memory on it, (4GB only cost like $30, but can offer a buffer of like 170+ raw images before anything even needs to be dumped to the CF card.)
Hey Tony Northrup ! I shoot street photography and need a camera who can take some weather and have a good AF system because you shoot really fast. Do you think this is a camera good for this kind of photography, because background blur isn't something you strive to achieve in street photography because you want to have a higher f.stop to get the background sharp. What's your opinion? Just want to cheer you on because love you and Chelsea's channel. Really informative and no bullshit! Cheers from Sweden!
Hi guys and thanks for the review Two quick points, We have no idea yet how the mk2 will cope with low light noise which is hugely important for wild life and the F8 is a real deal breaker I have a 7d 70d and a 5dmk3 , been waiting for the 7d mk2 for a couple of years as the 5dmk 3 with a 500, even a prime is to short for anything smaller than a buzzard at 40 meters or over, if I swap out to either of the crop bodies the noise kills the shots, if I use a converter on the 5d I loose res, so we were all hoping for a crop that can take noise free shots from 1600 to 2500 iso or better still a crop that we could slap the 1.4 converter on and work at F8 so the majority of the frame would be filled by the subject to avoid further loss of detail when cropping England like many other countries has dark and dismal weather a lot of the year, and the lack of light has been the main issue from the start, Long lens = high shutter peed = high iso = long sigh as you find your shot ruined 10fps means squat if the pics are unusable, super cross linked AF is great, especially for birds in flight which the 5dmk3 is soooo bad on, but again al of it means nothing if the end result sucks due to noise or is killing your shot So the question is when will you fine folk be given a nice shiny MK2 to go and field test?? and when you do get one would you please try some shots in poor light for us all?
jynw29059 Note that it does f/8 AF with the center AF point--an error we corrected at the end of the video. And yes, we'll definitely be testing this for sports & wildlife :).
Dissapointed... Really am! Was so much waiting for it though.. Guess, I'll go for a 70D, which has got both wifi and touch tilt screen which is easier to focus without moving the camera much on a tripod or video shooting! I agree that it has better features compared to 70D, but I'm not that much into sport as well.. So....
Hi chelsea and tony .thanks for this detailed preview.the canon 7d mark ii is sure to be a ferrari in the dslr world and my canon 60d a tiny fiat punto :) but i really want canon to make a canon 6d mark ii with just 11 all cross type af points.Do you think canon will make this camera this year or we will have to wait the next photokina event ?:))))))))
According to Canon features, there is one F8 focus point. Also, when you compare full-frame cameras in cropped mode for megapixel density, you have to divide the full-frame pixel cont by the SQUARE of the crop factor, since you are talking about a 2-dimensional measurement. The venerable Canon 5D Mark III (full frame 22MP) would put less then 9 MP in a 1.6x cropped frame.
Another awesome presentation Tony and thank you for spending the time to bring us all the latest news. I find it such a disappointment that this new camera does not have tilt touch screen and wifi..what were they thinking when the just left it out. For me the tilt touch screen is essential. Some of my best images couldn't have been achieved without it. To this end, its left me on the fense so its a toss up between the 70d and the 7dmkii..I'll probably go with the 7dmkii but this mean I'll have to drag my 60d around now for the tilt screen capabilities. A little underwhelmed and slightly disappointed I have to say.
PIXYBASHER Thanks! And thanks for supporting touch screens--so many people act like I'm crazy for liking them, but once you use them, you don't want to go back to those stupid thumb-joysticks...
Tony Northrup I think touch screen comes down to preference and they should have an option to turn it on or off. I never used one on a camera but I could smash my phone or tablet because they're so touchy and end up touching something you din't want to and having to back up, restart or lost. Plus I really, really hate fingerprints on there GRRRRRR ;) LOL
Its funny how everyone has a touch screen phone nowadays but they don't want it on their camera..!!..I suppose some people are cautious about the unknown when in reality they use them everyday. I have no doubts though that the next generation 7dmkiii will have wifi, flip touch screen and 4k video as well. Why put all your eggs in one basket right from the start, they need to think about future sales don't they..;-) Or maybe they might release one in the very near future called the 7dmkii T (for Touch screen..) maybe I should apply for a job there..lol
Marc Bernard I agree . i know you like it Tony, but i hate the touch screen on my phone. too sensitive. it might be faster some times but i hope Nikon never adds them on there cameras.
Hmm I wonder how this will compare to the old 1d mark iv? Obviously the 7d has more reach and bells/whistles but I'm sure the 1d mark iv has probably better low light performance, better build, and perhaps larger buffer? And I'm sure the price of 1d iv should drop on the used market now the 7d ii is out.....

Thanks Tony. Nothing gets into my arsenal without going through your reviews. You guys rock!
I really enjoyed this , the 7D MkII is something I have been looking forward to since I got my used 7D and was blown away by it's superiority for wildlife and other fast action shooting when compared to my 5D MkII. I'm with you Tony. No tilt and no touch screen is a deal breaker. Glad I got the 70D last year and love it.
Tony you said around 7:00 that cf is faster than sd. i herd different. please explain. I saw a video that said that cf cards are more bcuse sd is the way to go because they are faster

Raju Gurung Raw video records raw data from the sensor, allowing lossless changes to exposure and white balance. All-I still records the camera's processed version of the raw data.
Tony Northrup Thank you for your quick reply. Would be nice to know which of the Canon cameras record such raw format videos.

Tony Northrup Your welcome!
You two do a great job, keep up the good work!
I feel a lot more confident about waiting until the 7D mII comes out to get it thanks to your video!
no comparo to sony a77ii thats pretty newly out and comparable?
i like the idea of talking about the samsung mentioned in comments as well
Aaaah, finally! Thanks for the review guys. Cool new hair Chelsea!
Thanks Tony, Great video...I`m wondering if you could do an explanation of Wireless transmiter to control speedlites (if ther`s one as old 7D)
Great video as always... And yes, please keep the "live breaking news" coming!
Dear Tony, do you think the rumoredD9300 will compare more to the 7D mark II for sports and wildlife photography, Nikon is due to release a more "Premium DX camera soon
If you're not a sports or wildlife photographer and like to capture portraits, landscapes and architecture would you recommend this over the Canon 6d?
Will this camera be good for indoir and outdoor fashion shows or fashion photography
With all the people complaining of focus issues with the 7D ii, I'd like to see how one properly tests a camera for front & rear focus issues. BTW: Great review!
can you , tell the camera , to record video on cf card and to save pictures on the sd card?
Enjoyed your show I own a 5D MK III and I was thinking of the 7D MK II, however. I'd like to know where I can find a used 5D MK III for 1,800.00.
Thanks!
Hello,
I am planning to get the 7d Mark ii , I need you recommendation for which lens should I get. I am comparing between :
" Sigma 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM " & "Tamron 16-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD MACRO Zoom Lens "
I choose them because I need all use lens .
thank you
Nice review as always.
Thanks for the review! It's really helped me in deciding what body to get next.
Tony, I own the Nikon D7100, and I can tell you that the RAW buffer is 6 shots, not 15. It's on the Nikon specs sheet too. If I wasn't upgrading to the Nikon D750 I would strongly consider picking this up.
Phathom Ah, crap, you're right. Sorry about that! We'll correct it.
sir I do wedding and fashion photograohy which camera is better
6d or 7d mark 2
Will the BG-E7 (battery grip) for the 7D work with the new 7D Mark II or does it only use the BG-E11?
Dunno how you conclude the sensor is so great. Doesn't matter if you used raw, the image is still processed and it looks like the software did a lot so smoothing. Also the shadows looked more blocked up compared to the sony.
Hi there, do you have a coupon so i can bundle both your buying guide and stunning digital photography ?
I've just purchased a 5d mark 3...was it a good purchase or should i have been better waiting for the 7d mark 2
If that was a serious question you don't deserve that 5d3. Mom and dad must love you
I'd say it depends on what kind of photos you take and what you need the camera for.
Is the 7D battery grip (Battery Grip BG-E7) compatible with the 7D2?
One advantage of the 7D Mark II is that it can dual record to both SD and CF Card for VIDEO. Previous Canon DSLR's had two slots but could not dual record for video, only for photo. So glad Canon added this feature for video. The first DSLR to do this was the Sony A99.
raredreamfootage Ah, good point, thanks.
Enjoyed the live broadcast - glad the f/8 autofocus info was corrected by the end of the presentation.
What is the ultimate camera for macro photography ? I currently have the 7D and i really like it but i have been saving for an upgrade. Because i have Canon lenses so my only option is Canon. So i think my choice is between 5D Mark III and 7D Mark II.
Matti Suutarinen I suppose it depends what your macro subject is. My macro setups are completely different for still life, moving insects, etc.
How about the Sony A77 II Tony? Awesome focus tracking and 12 fps!
good video. Wow. Liking the flat screen in the background. New studio. New flat screen. New bangs. :D Thanks for the info. Waiting eagerly for the next 5d, or next FF to compete with the d810.
Can't wait to see the full review!
Hi Tony,
I have a Canon 70D, however I would like to ask you, if really worth making the change to Canon 7D Mark II ?
P/D. I bought your book and this really help me to improve my knowledge and abilities
Luis Humberto Garcia Oh, not for most. But if you're a serious or pro sports or wildlife photographer, those upgrades will definitely get you better shots.
Amazing in-depth live coverage, using public information only but also all this knowledge accumulated :)
I'm curious to hear more about the Samsung NX-1 as well, however the samples available to date are very limited, and 4K video shared on RUclips too heavily processed to tell anything.
Great review! I'm about to bite the bullet here this fall/winter on a
camera and it was great insight. ty
Does it still retain the pop up flash though that the orig 7d had? I haven't seen the mention anywhere and pics "look" like it's not there.
Limestar.com Yep, does have popup.
Now that is out and the ISO results have been blowing away the nikon crop sensor bodies has your opinion changed any?
Brandon Hussey We're doing image quality testing now, and we'll review the results live at 5pm ET tomorrow.
Thank you!
Keep up the good hard works guys :) I appreciate it!!!
is the paper back version also updated , as you mentioned in video?
ਸ਼ੇਰ ਸਿੰਘ Well, we can't ship you a new paperback, but the paperback comes with the ebook for free, and we update that ebook for you.
Where are you finding 5d3 used going for $1800? Please direct me. I'll go buy right now. Everywhere I have seen and been following is $2400-2700
Please do the Samsung NX1, its got beastly specs and the test footages looks seriously impressive even at high ISO
Thank you for a great show every week from a humble guy in Denmark
best regards Michael
Tony you should do a comparison review of 7D mk II and Sony A77 II
10 fps. vs. 12 fps
65 AF points (all cross) vs. 79 AF points (15 cross)
20.2 MP vs. 24 MP
I read about the Samsung NX1 review request in the comments here a few days ago... and being the snob that I am, dismissed it as it is from Samsung... but just chanced upon the promo video and the specs for this camera and WOW! If it's as good as advertised then this camera blows everything else away. It's a photographer's dream camera... with all the things you'd write on a wishlist... if it lives up to its specs...
how would 7d mark2 do with the new tamron 16-300 would do?
GAVINO BARRERA It should work fine; though super zooms like the 16-300 are never especially sharp. Our 7D Mark II review is coming next week.
Will the 7D mkII still shoot only 3 frames for AEB? Or did they move it up to 5 or 7 frames like the higher end models?
Blaise Poitra I don't know for sure, but I assume they added 5 and 7 frame AEB.
Is there a benefit from a crop sensor in macro photography ?
Matti Suutarinen For still life, not really. It can help if you can't get close enough (for example, when shooting live insects).
Tony Northrup
Ok. Thanks for the answer. I really enjoy watching your videos.
Oliver Liu Where are these infos? Are you sure you're looking at raw files, and not jpgs? I've not found a raw comparison yet...
Tony Northrup Thank you for your answer and therefore for your time. Actually they were jpg's without (they say) noise reduction. But also when we don't have the definitive proof for the noise amount, it's still too early to say: "Same noise-story like 70D / 700D", specially because Canon states (I know there's always marketing involved): "Thanks to its improved, higher sensitivity photodiode construction, CMOS circuitry, and color filters
with higher light transmittance, the EOS 7D Mark II records both still and moving
images at higher ISO speeds with remarkably low noise, making excellent low-light
photography and moviemaking possible."
After such a statement it would be a joke to deliver a 2000$ cam with more or less the same noise amount as a 700D / 70D.
No touchscreen is disappointing and also not very cool that we won't be able to move the screen.
hi tony nortrup
what about 7d mk2 with 400 mm f5.6 +1.4x tc iii
does the af will work at f8
regards
ansar basheer
ANSAR BASHEER With the center AF point only, yes. You'll see just slightly more detail than you would without the TC, so it might not be worth it. I generally don't use a TC with that lens and a crop body.
appreciate for the fast replay
thank u sir
Hey tony, have you got any reviews on speedlights ?
The essence of beauty ! ( the camera seems decent as well ) :)
is the 7d extended grip same as 7d mr2 one,,,,??
Another question: Since it has two card slots, could one be used for a WIFI card?
That was what I was afraid of, rushing to get the 70D when the 7D mkii was just weeks away... bummed and gutted.
Whats the next canon body to be released?
I love my 7dmark2, it's great for action and wildlife, and feels sturdy
Is the picture quality much more similar to 1200d then a 5d mark III?
ming sun It's better than the 1200D and worse than the 5D Mark III
Thank-you so much, Clay D
will it have continues focusing like 70d
hello! you are awesome Mr. Thank you for your education over all, you are a great addition to the 'google it' university..
also to add, i saw on your Nikon vs Canon video, that for film best is Panasonic, Vixia gh4, i considered that with 70D but also, its not FF..
Wondering with more people using video and pulling stills from 4K are these stills cameras relevant, canon needs to have an answer to the Sony A7s,i really hope canon does as i have alot of Canon glass, great review, thankyou.
Thx for this comparison video. I completely agree with Tony about the lack of some features of the 7D MkII, but i guess no "body" is perfect. :)
Can you make a full review of samsung nx1. I think it will be very intersting
Yervand Papazyan We did get a contact at Samsung, however, they don't have any loaner NX1s available. If you can find a way to get us a kit, we'd love to review it! :D
It does have f/8 auto focus on the center point.
***** Yes, we've ammended the video.
Tony Northrup Great. Because it would indeed be a big disappointment to not have an f/8 focus point for wildlife.
It was covered at 32:54
When are the canon body prices gonna drop? Was planning on getting the 70D once the prices dropped
Mukund Pai I've never really seen a sudden drop. I'd just grab a used copy.
+LouieGrind Did you ever get an answer?
Hi guys and thanks for the review
Two quick points,
We have no idea yet how the mk2 will cope with low light noise which is hugely important for wild life and the F8 is a real deal breaker
I have a 7d 70d and a 5dmk3 , been waiting for the 7d mk2 for a couple of years as the 5dmk 3 with a 500, even a prime is to short for anything smaller than a buzzard at 40 meters or over, if I swap out to either of the crop bodies the noise kills the shots, if I use a converter on the 5d I loose res,
so we were all hoping for a crop that can take noise free shots from 1600 to 2500 iso or better still a crop that we could slap the 1.4 converter on and work at F8 so the majority of the frame would be filled by the subject to avoid further loss of detail when cropping
England like many other countries has dark and dismal weather a lot of the year, and the lack of light has been the main issue from the start, Long lens = high shutter peed = high iso = long sigh as you find your shot ruined
10fps means squat if the pics are unusable, super cross linked AF is great, especially for birds in flight which the 5dmk3 is soooo bad on, but again al of it means nothing if the end result sucks due to noise or is killing your shot
So the question is when will you fine folk be given a nice shiny MK2 to go and field test?? and when you do get one would you please try some shots in poor light for us all?
jynw29059 Note that it does f/8 AF with the center AF point--an error we corrected at the end of the video.
So....
Very informative preview.
What camera are you using for the broadcast?
The Nikon D7100 has a buffer of only 6 frames in raw, according to Nikon, not 15 (14 bit lossless compressed NEF).
Does the auto focus works while shooting the video?.....just like 5D mark iii. ...
jay prajapati It works like the 70D, which is way better than the 5D Mark III.
Why put all your eggs in one basket right from the start, they need to think about future sales don't they..;-)
Or maybe they might release one in the very near future called the 7dmkii T (for Touch screen..) maybe I should apply for a job there..lol
Gotta see this reviewed when paired up with the new 400mm f/4 DO
