Your sound is your signature. Lot of things you can do to get a good sound.
I'll tell you a few things you don't need to do. You don't need to raise you strings way high off the fingerboard. You don't have to pull the strings so far back like you're about to shoot off an arrow. You don't need to do any of that.
Keep your strings at a nice height, maybe .9, one whole centimeter off the fingerboard. Play without an amp, especially when you practice. Don't move your right hand around too much while you play. You don't wanna... See the guys doing the bird when they play? Start flapping their hands, almost like a chicken. They think somehow physically it makes them swing harder. It just makes you tired, that's all. You don't need all that movement, just right in there. And keep your thumb locked. See my right thumb? Whoops! It's not going all in here. Keep it locked.

Listen to his arrangement of "Tangerine". He's got the fastest pizzicato technique. I transcribed his solo after slowing it down, and hope to play it one day at his tempo. He is the dictionary definition of what a jazz bass player should be. Chops, bass lines, phrasing, and rhythmic stability all rolled into one.

" A most pussaintly dainted 'tall animal holder, ' lecture from the oratically prominent Mr. Mcbride, one of my highly benightied double stringed prospectors, I have many more, many before him. I simply don't choose to fatuously aperture detailing such records. His fundamental approach I found very portenous for those out there whom are "seekers," such as myself.

Okay, giving brother, thank you. But at times I flap my right hand around like whatever, because that's how I play it best for that moment. The wish for the note inside me sends my body there. And I love it. I don't think it makes me "swing harder". I don't think at all about it. And I don't "rake" the strings as you and many amazing jazz upright players do, and a person that you revere (now passed) said for me to go ahead with what works. All that being said, your advice might help some, so thank you. Just don't dictate. Fabrics of sounds evolve through human dancing.

"start flapping their hands, almost like a chicken" - too dismissive told to accept it.
If he don't use that movement, it does not mean that it's not necessary to others
This movement is recommended by many great masters for create a big acoustic sound and good swing feel. He is a big man and he have very strong hands, therefore he spend less energy to do it. If you is average human then you need to compensate a create big sound some way. Therefore many people playing with the help a chicken wing movement which Is the sum of little a different movements, like a cross in a boxing.
