Another magnificent instructional video from Christian. So informative. Check it out you bass players. So much valuable information here and it's presented so very well in such a clear, precise and entertaining manner. Remembering Christian's tour to Australia (down under) 2013, with his fantastic trio will always be remembered so very fondly.!
If you want to develop jazz phrasing with the bow, you can't do better than the famous Kreutzer etude (No. 1 in the International Music edition of 18 Kreutzer Studies for String Bass. All of the bowings supplied are beneficial, but my favorite and the one that helped me most is one I added: down bow one, slur two, down-up, slur two, up-down, slur two, etc. If you don't know the etude, then learn it with all separate bows first. Then tackle additional bowings.
If he could give a lesson on how he's playing Lover would be awesome! He is swinging even in his telling us of his exhaustion of playing. Brilliant! Great swing, Christian...Masterful!
It's funny he mentioned the bow, in 1975 I tried a playing violin a coworker had for sale, I am a bass player, I tried playing it and it was so bad I gave up, it was worse than sawing through a tooth. I have since learned much more. Still play my fretless bass and fretted bass.
Hmmmm. This could be my solution to the synth bass sound l hear in my head. A sound l can not find on any pedal. I'll try setting up one of my five strings for some bow action🤔. Uprights are scary for me but the tone is magical and with a bow! Wow. Thanks Mr. McBride! Instructional and entertaining!
tempo 330 ?, 45 mn ?? I can't do that even 5 mn ! Thank you for the explanations ! The bow as a solution in jazz, I would never have thought that !.... I've set the bar high now ! What you do with the bow, even your "tat da da, da da !", how amazing ! Thanks
Your wrist is locked with the German. String crossings with the Butcher bow are the killer when trying to bop with the stick, endurance with the French. I started with the German and switched over, for the tone and nimbleness of the French. German is a better artillery weapon, though, hands-down.
use enough so that it doesn't cake on crystals onto the hairs. pops is infamous for that. pay attention the pressure you're putting on the strings and the grip as well.
What's the point of trying to play a French bow German style? Might as well get a German bow, learn how to play it. French bow is easier and in my opinion feels a lot more comfortable with that overhand style grip. Paul Chambers was an excellent German bow bassist.
@@larryking1489 My point is, it makes more sense to learn how to play a German bow if you primarily play French and vice versa. Yes, he was demonstrating German style with a French bow. But his point was he doesn't like German bow...period. That's fine for him, but it takes me back to my original point. Arco styles are individual and primarily used different ways in different genres of music. Good instruction should not limit the observer to only what is desirable to the instructor...Really!
@@larryking1489 Perhaps, but then, that's the way the world works. Some of us are deeper thinkers than others, on any given topic. It generally falls under the philosophical rubric of Free Will...no "shit!"
This is supposed to be a teaser for an instructional video. Watching Chris McBride telling stories and showing off his (prodigious) chops is highly entertaining, but the educational value is really zero. The potential viewer of the instructional video should get some feeling the he/she is likely to learn something, but if the content of the video is similar to the teaser, this does not look promising. If I want to be entertained by Chris McBride, I'd rather go to one of his concerts. If I want to learn about jazz bowing, I'd rather check a top notch pedagogue like John Clayton or John Goldsby.
Christian's the G! spitting fire with the bow even after walking 30 choruses at the tempo, probably the best Jazz Bassist of Modern times.
Christian is my absolute favorit-amazing player, witty, unreal improviser
I have never felt anything more relatable than “NO I DON’T WANT ONE!” Great lesson!
I'm not even a bass player, this is just really entertaining.
You are loved and appreciated in the jazz community
Mr McBride is swinging like hell just the way he talks already! Truly amazing guy!
I would vote Mr. McBride the coolest man on planet Earth right now. By far. Not only a genius of the BASS but a super cool and friendly soul.

Nice! Mr.McBride
That's hysterical - I don't know anyone else who has that physical capability.
Mr. PC was also Mr. Unconventional. One of the very best, that's for sure. And NHOP would have loved how you did Lover.
Chris got the swag
Thank you, Maestro. I really appreciate your humility while lightin that bass up. I’m just working up the bow and this was really insightful
Damn! Didn't expect to hear scheherazade from mr mcbride. Nice!

I'd love to see Christian make a new Arco video now that's done that album with Edgar. That had't've been transformative. Talk about the GOATs
Glen Moore told me this same thing. He played crazy fast tempos working with Ted Curson, and picking up the stick for solos was a survival tool.
Dude is awesome
Skills.... wow.... amazing
Thanks Christian!!!
Thanks for the video!
Been teaching since CCP and All-City!! Thanks for teaching me my first improve! GHS231!

Thanks for posting.
Paul would be proud of you dude.
Just great! Thank you Christian!

Man, you are a cool cat!! ❤👏🏻🙏🏻
I play piano, but this was so interesting for some reason
This is going to be the bowing equivalent of Victor Wooten’s double thumb tutorial
Many Stars
I wanna like it twice
Still sounds great when you hold the French bow like a German bow!
incroyable. Mr. Bride
man that walking on Lover is insane....
and then the bowing started
The German bow is more common in the United States, but the French bow is more common in the UK.
Really?
@@taiping2995 Yes, *really*, and not merely metaphorically, symbolically or hypothetically.
He plays that French comme Il est née en France ou en suisse, what a skillful cat, just joking, he is incredible, so much respect !
En effet 🙃
Beast
thank's !
The way you play have you tried an 18th c snakewood violone or viola bastarda bow? That might suit your demand on elegant dexterity.
I was wondering, Which mic is that big big diaphragm ?
Looks like a U47 FET

Boss!
Im lucky enough to be playing on slam Stewart’s bass now in my jazz band at BU. I still can’t bow for shit hahaha
Which strings is he using?

Deo gratias
Hey guys, that song Lover, who's the author?
Ive never seen anyone in my state play German bow hold.
How much rosin do you use..I have Pops on Spiros and it the bow never really bites into the strings...
use enough so that it doesn't cake on crystals onto the hairs. pops is infamous for that. pay attention the pressure you're putting on the strings and the grip as well.
Try some Nyman Harts, it's a harder compound that gets into the bow hairs better

Bruh, really?. It was a demonstration how he feels about playing G bow. It's a different approach.
lol
