- Hundreds of French police reinforcements have arrived in New Caledonia amid ongoing riots in the Pacific Ocean territory which have left five people dead.
A state of emergency on the islands has now been triggered as the reinforcements look to "regain control", according to French High Commissioner Louis Le Franc.
The unrest erupted this week after lawmakers in Paris backed and approved changes to voting rolls that the indigenous population say will dilute their political influence.
Hundreds of people have been injured, and officials say around 200 people have been arrested so far.

The indigenous population were the permitted voters, so they had more political power over their homeland. Population from settlers/colonisers were not allowed to vote. Goverment is changing this, the indigenous population are protesting about loosing their political influence, power.

Give them what they want: give them full indepdence from France. But make it clear that they get no foreign aid from France, or Australia, or New Zealand, or anywhere else. Once they're under a corrupt Kanak government that casts them into poverty, just remind them that they wanted their independence.
Australia will have to, or the Chinese will move in. It won't be as much as France pays, though.

In order to be able to vote in the local government elections you now are required of having been a permanent resident of the island for a minimum of 10 years. Beforehand you were only able to vote if you were a permanent resident of the island since before 1998.

They've had a few referendums that have rejected independence. One in 2018 rejected it by 57%, another in 2020 rejected by 53%, and one in 2021 by 97% but this was only because the independence parties boycotted the vote.

'Escaping state control' I mean now the first time that has happened to French colonies when France hasn't accepted the days of colonies is gone.
