The dark days when different developers would develop different games for the same publisher and be released under the same name on different formats. This is not the EA Sports F1 2000 I had on my Playstation.

I played this game a lot when it came out. I remember some quirks this game had. 1. In Spa if you came out of pits you could start your fast lap immediately and it was basically 5 seconds faster of that if you started your fast lap after warm up lap. 2. In Monza the S turns sometimes gave you warning for corner cutting, even if you were on the track(you had to drive exactly middle of the S turns). 3. In Spa Eau Rouge corner, a lot of drivers spinned out in the race. 4. And as you mentioned a lot of the time Jaguar was the fastest car.

Looking at this game makes you appreciate the amazing effort of Geoff Crammond's GP3 even more. Car settings (already very sophisticated in GP2), tracks and car models looked so much better on GP3, it's almost not comparable to this one.
It's just a shame the project didn't last longer.

I remember enjoying this when it came out, but it certainly was a bit of a mess. The physics were... interesting. The tiny helmets and huge wheels, the tracks that only barely resembled the real thing, the damage model, etc. However, I will say this... I saw something happen in this game that I don't think I have ever seen happen since. I was doing a practice session at Hockenheim, and I got a notification on that display at the top of the screen saying Fisichella had a stuck throttle. I popped over into the replay and saw Fisichella going into the braking zone at the end of the straight before the stadium section, he locked the front wheels while the rears kept spinning, and flew off track and hit the tire barrier so hard it flipped the car over. Wild!

F1 Championship Season 2000 is what F1 2000 should have been.
No rain, you could put all the assists on and essentially slot car it around. The graphics were underwhelming, really with the modeling, which...coming from SCGT that was baffling because SCGT always to me looked much much much better than this. Somehow...F1 CS 2000 didn't really do the rain well, think mirrors with spray on it.

I missed a bit and when I came back I couldn't tell it was Monaco until the tunnel. I'll bet to increase playability and keep the AI from getting clogged up, they had to make the track wider, longer and less curvy. Those lines in the sky and around the clouds might have been a desperate move to reduce polygons or amount of faces rendered.

Back in those days, Geoff Crammond's games were the gold standard for F1 sims and this fell quite a bit short of matching their feel, even though visually it was quite a bit better than those. In fact, not until Grand Prix 4 did I find the newer games did things significantly better than by that time the venerable Grand Prix 2.

This game was such a bodged rush job that they had to release a 2nd F1 game later in 2000 (F1 Championship Season 2000), which was actually quite good. If they'd just held off and released that as the original F1 2000 I think the EA F1 series would have had a lot more credibility in the sim community.
People remember the EA F1 games fondly, but at the time a lot of the sim community looked down on these games. The tribalism was really bad back then. Geoff Crammond and Papyrus were the giants; ISI was still a newcomer (Sports Car GT was a tiny niche within sim racing). Saying you liked the EA games was a surefire way to get ridiculed by the GP3 or GPL diehards. It wasn't until around F1 2002 that the community really started taking the EA games and ISI seriously.

I had the Playstation 1 version called F1 Championship season 2000. It was more simcade but still had things such as fuel and tire strategy, black and sector yellows, along with hella fun rain racing. As well as my favorite Pit message, "There's been a retirement, It's Jos Verstappen". It also had a challenge mode based on the season. Very similar to the Thunder challenges from Nascar thunder where you were put in a situation from each race of the season from the actual race.

I do remember this game fondly, not as a sim though, that was GP2 for me at the time. At some point I simply accepted its flaws and inferior physics model, turned traction control and anti-skid on and played it like a 90s arcade racer, via keyboard and in third-person view. It was actually good fun that way. Also, every menu screen showed pictures of different grid girls, and 12-year-old me liked that. 😀
