Maximum occupancy is the sim operator and 4 others strapped in to the sim (when the motion is activated).
Divide the cost of the sim time by 4 guests, and it is a very reasonable, shared adventure.
Please note: The museum is not set up as a training facility and the sim, while expertly maintained, is no longer FAA certified to log official flight training.

FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.
This is the only video I have seen that explains how a Level D sim makes you feel acceleration.
Very fun/entertaining video! Don't feel bad for anything you lacked in the sim. If you don't fly that airplane on a daily basis we would all struggle to keep up with it.
+steveo1kinevo Thanks Steveo! and I need to watch your latest one about "Pilot Swag" :P
+steveo1kinevo Steveo I think you need to add interjections of you rocketing across the screen on the Boosted Board in the same fashion as Steve leaps in and out.
+Sahel Production subscriptions are earned my friend; If you'd like to subscribe to our channels, that is awesome. I'll check out your channel, and Steveo might as well, But please don't simply expect a sub for sub.
+Sahel Production Me too
I'm in school right now and I start my flight training next semester to learn to fly commercially. I've been watching your videos and I'm glad that there are people like you out there that are willing to share their experience and provide tales of inspiration and caution to current and future pilots.
Thank you...and keep up the great work Steve!
P.S. I am rather jealous that you had the opportunity to fly that sim.
Noticed the Bose headset right away... even before you leapt in with the pitch. I use Bose noise-cancelling headphones every day, and love them! As for the sim... wow... put that on the bucket list.
+goatflieg right on!
(For the public) - "Stalling speed" is misleading; stalling happens at an angle of attack, not a particular speed. An aeroplane may fly at zero airspeed, or stall at VNE. The lift generated at a given speed will depend on the angle of attack. It will increase as the angle increases, up to a point, then fall off. In a light aeroplane, the variation in weight from empty to overloaded is too small to make a noticeable difference, while an airliner may vary dramatically. E.g the 737-200's full payload is roughly the weight of the empty machine.
+avro549B Thanks for the added insight!
+FlightChops You're welcome. I assume you knew that already but left it out for simplicity. My sidebar had a great illustration of the topic How to Prevent Aircraft Stalls & Spins: "Quit Stalling--or Spin In" 1945 US Navy Pilot" - worth watching.
Also if you are in a turn, you do not have all of the lift available for staying in the air, a percentage of the lift your wings generate (depends on your bank angle) gets used to make that change in direction. So you actually have a higher angle of attack in a turn than when you are flying a straight line at the same speed.
Hey Chops, for what its worth, the sim is a lot harder to fly than the real thing! Nice job!
haha - thanks! :)
I have spent quite some time in Level-D sims and I also couldn't believe how realistic it is. Once u fly for 10 mins, you think it's real. I am glad someone on YT finally showed how real it feels! Great video!!!
+Kaipeternicolas Thanks so much for that feedback! We really tried to capture the feeling - I'm happy to hear you thought we succeeded!
***** You absolutely did succeed :) Keep up the fantastic work! Thanks :)
FANTASTIC !!!! Thank you Mr Chps. Really good. Will head over to the site and enter the comp :-)
I am pushing 65 and just re-certified after a 20 year hiatus. I am so glad to be back flying again! I just wanted to thank you for the great videos! Very inspirational and cool.
BTW I am really close to you. I am out of CYSN. Might see you around!
+Ingvar Grimsmo awesome! Thanks!
FlightChops Nice mutton Chop Beard
How awesome is that?! Finished up the simulator portion of my multi-IFR training about a month ago... The Redbird is cool, but this?! This is on a whole new level. Looking forward to watching the landing ;)
Your video's are always so high quality and so much fun to watch them. At the moment i am studying to become a comercial pilot and you are one of the people that convinced me to just go for it.
+pachaleke wow - awesome! It is Super rewarding to hear that! Happy training and let me know how you're doing throughout - remember - there will be tough days, but if you stay tenacious and focused, you'll get through it.
Nice vid! When I fist got my job with Delta, I got to fly a 727 full motion sim in Atlanta, Delta Training Center. Took off and landed it, and I had barely over 20 hours logged at the time. That was one of the best days of my life. :)
there is a B737-800 simulator in Holland for the public. its really cool i did fly in it :D
Fantastic video. The quality in your work is awesome. I've been videoing my flying lately all because I was struggling with landings and remembered that's why you first started, showing steep versus shallow landings. Love your videos.
+Rustin Reese Thanks!
Okay, now this is what I'm talking about!!! Awesome video! Now let's stick you in an A380 sim, I mean, it's only 495 times heavier than the 172
+Nigel Mac 747
+Nigel Mac Yep. That's why all the A380 captains have huge muscles.
Have flown the a380 sim and it was super responsive, though I sure did sweat as it felt so real lol
Dude! Unbelievable the doors that have opened up for you with from Flight Chops! Way Cool Steve! Thanks for taking all of us along!!!
+Sean Mulligan It's definitely pretty awesome - but let's be clear - it is entirely because of guys like you supporting the channel, watching and actively commenting, that we're getting to do cool stuff - so I am super happy to share it!
I once recorded video in a 737-800 sim as two randomly selected mechanics acted out proper cockpit procedures for a training course for taxi and runup qualification at a major airline. An FAA Flight Safety Inspector observed. We had sim time left over after completing the scenes, so the mech in the left seat asked to fly around the pattern, with motion. Sim supervisor approved, he took it off, flew the pattern, night VMC, and landed smoothly. Turns out he had gathered some sim time in the past while working midnights. I turned to the FAA inspector and said, "You should see how our pilots fly." Priceless moment, I thought.
Good job again! Your production talents really shine through. I'm not a pilot but I love to fly in small aircraft. It's been far too long since I was in the air so these videos offer a great vicarious thrill of flying. I've heard you say that you worry about some videos running long. Nonsense! At least some of us will eat up every minute of them. Keep up the good work as long as you can. And thanks to your crew too!
Wow, that looks like a lot of fun man! Thanks for another great video!
+Josh McCorquodale Thanks! And sorry you had to see it limited to 360P resolution.... After uploading, I never press the "Publish" button, until RUclips says "Processing done" and it has always been good to go in full HD - but this time it is still only 360P - hopefully it resolves itself soon - this one looks great in HD
Sounds good!
What a fantastic video Steve, it was really in informative for someone that wants to sit front seats of an airliner.
I like how your videos make flying seem possible for anyone
Awesome thanks! That’s the goal :)
This brings back some childhood memories, lots of hours in that jumpseat pre-9/11. My Dad was a 200 series captain with over 30,000 hours on it. I remember a little more than a decade ago we went out to the Canadian Airlines training facility in Toronto and they let us fly the full motion simulator very similar to this one.
Next time: BARREL ROLL!
AWESOME. Been wanting to use some air miles to fly somewhere and buy time in one of these sims, but now you've REALLY given me a reason.
+zakooldude awesome! And yes, for sure - if you can get to ATL, this is well worth it!
A wing always stalls when the critical angle of attack is exceeded. Coefficient of lift is a direct function of angle of attack. keeping that in mind, you will need different angle of attack configuration for airspeed, altitude, weight, etc. Hence it is difficult to keep up with stall speeds in a jet and in modern jets, it is indicated on the airspeed tape :)
So jealous you got to do this Steve! I have always wanted to fly in a 737 sim ever since I heard WestJet had a few in Calgary, it's too bad they aren't open to the public! Keep up the good work!
stalls not only depend on weight but density altitude as well. Higher altitudes in warmer air will be a higher speed stall.
That was cool, thanks.
Full flight simulators are awesome. I once had the priviledge of being in one for an A320 that was actively being used for pilot training, but unfortunately we had to turn off the motion because we were more people than there were seats. At one time I was standing beside the F/O seat during a hard landing, and it was quite strange to see these very realistic graphics, and hear the thump, but not feel anything. I almost lost balance.
Very interesting - and I really liked the two occasions, when you jumped into the video to talk about the headset. Very well done effect, so much fun! 👍😎
Great video! I had the opportunity to fly this sim with a couple of members from our flying club almost a year ago. I highly recommend this to ANY pilot if you can make it down to ATL. It is a ton of fun.
Just did a double session in this last weekend - worth every penny! The double session is also worth it as a single session will only get you 45-60 mins of flying because of setup, brief, debrief, etc. but a double session will get you around 2.5 hours of actual flying. I thought about adding a third session but depending on what you're dong, it can get exhausting!
How much was it?
Current rate is $425/session. If you book a single session, you'll get about 45 mins of flying; a double will get you probably 2 hours. I had the option to take the third session since it wasn't booked but I was pretty tired after two sessions.
+Philip Hawtrey a definite must try. Thanks for the quick reply man
Awesome!
I did you one better. I was invited last year to the Airbus training facility in Miami. They have 6 of those, all new, all glass cockpits - full motion. This is where they train international pilots in everything from A320 to A340. I flew left seat in the A320 simulator, takeoff and landing. Did all (except the stall exercise). That was cool!
Awesome! I saw that very same DC-3 being restored from the ground up, when I worked for Delta in the mid 90's and took photos of the early flights at an air show, I guess it was in Columbus, GA. Can't wait for the Approach & Landing video in the simulator... thanks!
Kinda puts the Frasca to shame lol. Trim switches are wired in series which requires you to press both. If one of the switches were to fail in the on position, the trim wouldn't change because the second switch is still off. As usual nice flying!
Well, you were in my neck of the woods. I'm an AMT at the Delta Technical Operations Center on the other side of the field. Nice video! A full motion sim flight is something all pilots should get to experience.
i have been awaiting this video haha nice work man
A few older jets were very intolerant of being stalled, and were very difficult to recover from the stall. Some not only had stick shakers, but also a stick pusher.
But you only get to experience the stick once, as that terminates your flight training or flight check or whatever else you're doing.
Hey guys my i'm from panama i really love aviation but at this moment feel kind a sad because one copa airline pilot tells to me i dont gone pilot one plane never in my life because i'm a truck driver and donde get mi high school complete because my family was so poorly when i was a young guy dont get some money for send to me to the school i learn english seeing videos here on youtube and i underdstand so much words can read and speak ...my respect for all persons who make real his dreams while i continue learning more about this beauty aviation world god bless you all hope one day make this true
I did this for 1.5 hours at UA in 1991 and it was fantastic. It cost about 300,000 miles but was worth. Highlights: uzzing SFO and doing the Potomac approach to DCA If you fly Alitalia out of Rome, you can a short flight without motion but a full cockpit in the first class lounge. You can pay about $60 for a one time use. (This was two years ago)
Nice video! I'll have to get to ATL and try out the 737 sim. I've gotten to fly the CRJ-700 and EMB-145 sims. Awesome time! One of the perks to being a mechanic I guess after run taxi training 😀. New subscriber, keep up the nice work.
+Sparxx_513 Thanks! and welcome - enjoy the back catalog - I think there are about 75 videos now!
Great video. I was surprised too that it flies just as a small airplane. Really hope to win the Bose headset. I desperately need a new one.
Awesome Video Flight Chops Cant wait to see more!
Looks like you had a blast. Be fun to try that sim one day.
I came across this Atlanta based sim a couple years ago through another youtuber...I believe he was considerably younger. Definitely another dream on my prayer list. Wonder if they have on here in the Houston area?
Man! I have to fly down and check out that sim. It's a dream of mine.... ;) Thanks!
+Don Kendrick For sure! bring some friends and it quickly becomes very affordable!
Hi there, I'm the one who install that simulator at Delta training center in December 1998. IF you need more information let me know :)
Thanks for sharing this! It's on my bucket list, as soon as I can find time to get to Atlanta:)
Super cool! Now I want to go to Atlanta and play in the Sim!
High end sims are great fun, the motion is totally involving. No landing? FYI you can rent the BA and Lufthansa sims too, not cheap, but mostly under 4 figures. Want to try a 747 or an A380 next time?
+cageordie Landings come in the next episode (both mine, and Brock's (although I'm not sure Brock's can be described as a "landing" :) And yes, where do I sign up for a 747 and/or A380?
+FlightChops Landings have always seemed like the essential and difficult skill to me, if you can land it then everything else is easy. BA has 747, 757, 767 and 777 and you can book at www.britishairways.com/en-fr/baft/fly-a-simulator/fly-a-simulator-public/fly-a-simulator-public 400-450 GBP per hour. Lufthansa has many alternatives and prices range from around 300 to over 1000 Euros depending on what you fly and what package you choose. A310, A320, A330, A340, A380, 737, 747, 747-8, 757, 767, 777. Sadly no A350 or 787s. www.proflight.com/en/buchung/konfigurator/index.php If the links get blocked I'll find another way.
Great stuff - I once had a go in an Avro AJ86 Simulator in a Lufthansa simulator in Berlin/Ger That was real fun ,too.
Just like a J-3 Cub! Almost... Thank you again for posting that video. Great! KYFCS!!Seeya ATB
Hi Flightchops, I don't suppose you use FSX flight simulation with add on aircraft scenery? You could have practiced on CaptainSim 737-200 before trying the real simulator and that way you'd have been familiar with the classic cockpit. If you intend on trying 737-NGX - glass cockpit types - PMDG 737 NGX is highly recommended. Then work your way up to 747-400. I also enjoy flying GA aircraft and A2A Cessna and Pipers are the best on the market. I've learnt my way around most classic aircraft now, DC8, 707, 727, DC10 and Tristar - and the simulation software is getting so realistic - 3D cockpits and study level simulations. FSLabs Concorde is one hell of a learning experience. Just google FSX and the aircraft you're interested in.
Your action-safe area was perfect on this one. (Figured you might be wondering)
+ZeroByteInFlight Cool thanks! Have you got the big screen set up at your new place yet?
+FlightChops - Yep! Only the storage shed and aquarium remain to be moved!
Whoa crazy number of video views! Great episode
+weatherandsky Glad you enjoyed it Kerry!
I went there last year. I enjoyed it!
Is the flight simulator free to use?
I wish. They charge over $300 for it.
You know all airplanes stall speed depends on loading and configuration. It isn't a speed. It is an angle of attack. We just get less variation in speed with our bug smashers vs a heavy.
+JLDoctorWho Yes, that part of the video is sort of unclear. maybe one of the experts can weigh in on this. Stand by...
Delta really should upgrade to the Tropos 6000XR visual with the 4K projectors. They won't regret it. :-D
+afxgrin I'm not sure what they are currently training on, but that sim was retired over 10 years ago - that's why it is in the museum now :)
Would be cool to get you into a home sim. I know that x-plane has a solid 737-200 and a nice DHC-2. Or even for a fun challenge a B407. Would live to help if you are interested in trying the x-plane sim (but I assume you could figure it out)!
+FlightPass Thanks! And yes, I need to get a set up going at home. I've just been too busy, but I know it will help me with IFR studying.
What about an engine failure, or a landing in rain and severe crosswind, or both! Haha I feel like I'd need to book a whole day in that thing, it would be impossible to get me out of it.
Great video, love it! Looks like a stall in the Piper Archer :)
+Matt Nightingale yes - I agree. I also fly a PA28 and it is a similarly benign stall.
Awesome video, maybe I'll go there one day :)
What fun, great video!
Cool and informative vid! Thanks
great flying...really impressed
awesome. bucket list.
Awesome! Thanks for this :)
I wonder how well you would have done in an Airbus, because in that airplane the controls are genuinely different.
dude, I think I love you
+Andrew Bryant haha awesome.
can you do the same flight and maneuvers in the Airbus A320 sim? to compare the differences? you will be surprised.. i was a Boeing man before, but an Airbus fan now. THE Boeing with its setup is a positive stable aircraft and trims the same as any other, but the Airbus is Neutral stability, and needs no trimming. and he differences between boeing soft limits and airbus hard limits.
That was cool! Funny that when we spend time talking out loud about holding altitude it doesn't!
I didn't know about the two trim switches. Only electric trim I've used was in a C172.
100th like! And all well deserved, do you plan on coming down to CYTZ anytime soon it'd be cool to meet you! Awesome video
+Aviator172 Thanks! And yes, I am SO due to get back to YTZ! I haven't even seen the new under water tunnel yet.
+FlightChops Its pretty convenient but there was something special about the ferry.
+Aviator172 Agreed - as much as missing the ferry sucked, it was also a great time to chill, and consciously leave my "every day life stress" behind on the shore. I was always certain to be in "flying mode" by the time the ferry docked at the other side.
+FlightChops Absolutely, I guess there's some sort of relaxation in the tunnel with the elevators and the moving walkways but I won't really compare to a boat ride before flying a plane!
Steve, There is nothing in your life that sucks. I wish we had more in common than the same first name and the fact that we are divers and pilots....Great video
+Steve Camden Haha - you're wearing a dry suit - we have more in common! I WILL be joining you for one of your crazy tropical dive trips one of these days!
Ya you better my friend....Albanyscuba.com for anyone who see's this thanks
And that was an awesome video
Awesome, awesome, awesome, thanks
OMB IVE BEEN THERE MANY TIMES I LIVE IN ATL GA
Awesome!!!
+Eric Lund Glad you enjoyed it Eric!
I wonder what that simulator does when you do a spin or a barrel roll. And what max pitch, dive, bank it can do.
It must be hard to resist no to do something stupid there .. oh, well, at least it would be for me ^..^
Thanks for posting, as always.
+martin i cool - and I think it is more about simulating the forces, not the "actual' pitch / roll and yaw. In fact, it actually uses pitch to simulate forward acceleration / deceleration. So, if you think about it, the only thing it is really limited in it's ability to simulate is sustained G load; but it can do a REALLY good job simulating momentary positive and negative G loads by suddenly raising or dropping several feet.
+FlightChops Yop, that sustained load is what I was interested in.
I haven't tried this kind of simulator yet. But it's in my TODO list .. definitely. It must have been one hell of the experience. Probably not as good as the acrobatics you did, but still. ;-)
Great video! But most importantly, Where did you get this shirt? Gotta have one.
Which shirt - this is an older episode and I don’t remember what I / Brock was wearing
Oh one was the play button and ER. Enjoy your videos man!
Weight always has an effect on stall speed that's piloting 101.
Awesome. Is the simulator part of the Delta museum as well or is it just restricted for training?
+Mohammad Yasir Serious question - did you watch the video? :P Because I need to know if I failed to communicate the answer to that question in the video.
+FlightChops Hahaha no man you did a pretty good job actually in making everything clear in the video. I just stopped in the beginning to watch it later but I put that comment in between. But really cool video nevertheless. I'm encouraged to go check it out myself.
Hi, great videos, very fun. Keep it up. I also wanted to ask if you know wich flight simulation are used. like FSX, X plane or something like that?
That simulator is cool. Next time I get to go to Georgia I have to try it going take some saving though at $400 not that cheap for the average joe. But still cool and looks like it is worth it. #BoseA20 hashtag.
Excellent production value. The bg music is a bit loud.
Loved your flying video.... :) how do i apply for those headsets :)
Thanks
So cool…
now now, aeroplanes don't stall at a speed. They stall past the critical angle of attack...
Will there be a video of you flying the mini cooper at 12:55??!
I was taught that no matter the weight, a stall happens at a certain angle of attack. Why in this case does it depend on configuration?
+Jaccoob233 You're correct - that part of the video is sort of unclear. maybe one of the experts can explain it better than I can. Stand by...
See wiki: Stall (fluid mechanics). Scroll down to Stall Speed. There is your best answer. Always apply the correct stall recovery technique for your aircraft at the first indication of a stall.
I.want to see your friends simulator attempt
+John Moorer Coming next! Watch for it Friday the 18th of Dec :)
That's cool, in all fairness, I've taxied so many jets in my life that I feel like a cab driver, really. All different jets of so many airlines as an A&P mechanic. I found my true calling as a drone RC pilot, is what I enjoy now, Thank God.........No more job security in the airlines anymore. Still love airplanes thou......
All planes fly the same, pitch to altitude, power to speed. Or is it vice versa?
+Lawrence Froehlich haha, yeah, we generally think of pitch for speed (if you point the nose down you'll get going pretty fast regardless of power setting :) ... it is all about energy management - but some planes are simply harder to manage because feedback to your inputs is slower.
i have a quick queston about the contest, where is the question of the contest? there is a form to awnser but no questoin xD
+Dennis van der Wijst Sorry if that's confusing. The question is on the site before you click the form (you can do it again if you've already done it) and the form simply says "give it your best shot" at the point when you're to answer the question. The reason it is set up that way, is that the question changes each month, but we don't update the form. I might consider rewording that part of the form so it is more clear though.
***** Thank you!! i didnt read quite well xD
sorry for that.
+Dennis van der Wijst All good - now, go win that A20!
***** :D
Happy New Year and Merry Christmas ! How to win tranin session at 737 - 200 at Delta ?
In the video you kept saying "It's really affordable if you share it with some friends" but you never once hinted to if it was $100 for 30 mins or closer to $600 per hour which is normal price for a level D sim. I have three type ratings with a lot of time in these type of sims and have always wanted to share this experience with my brother who is a private pilot. But at $600 per hour that is not going to happen. ;-)
+Danny Creech Well - this one doesn't cost $600 per hour. :) I try to make engaging and concise videos - spending time explaining the cost break down of this affordable sim (which includes pre and post flight briefings in the price) was not something I wanted to take screen time to convey... So instead, I simply made it clear you can share the cost with friends, and provided the link in the description where you can find the actual cost.
Yeh never getting on a plane with you at the helm . No offense but I can't take ppl saying let's do it what the hell regardless 😂😂😤
This thing is 400 bucks right?
High-tech stuff haha... 1970 high tech :P
They should update the cockpit to full glass at least.
+Sunburn2007 this comment matches the face on that dog in your avatar so well :P do you have any idea what it would cost to "update" the panel in this sim? I'm fairly certain "at least" does not apply to the monumentally expensive task that would be.
FlightChops BOOOOMMM!!! YOU GOD DAMN SAVAGE MATE!!! 😂😂🔞🔞
I want to do that so bad
but im 3 years too young :(
Good video, but in my view, pushing the competition so much is pretty annoying.
