I worked in I.T. for about 25 years, and there's so much in this show that rings true. I once had a phone call from a new office that had just gotten several new PCs. The office manager told me that the new PC wouldn't start up. I asked him to make sure that it was turned on and plugged in. I then asked him to double check to see that the plug was firmly in the socket. He told me that he couldn't tell because it was too dark. So I asked him to turn on the lights. He said he couldn't because there was a blackout.
I once worked internet support. When I asked one customer to try resetting their modem and router they asked "The box with the lights on it? I need a ladder: I nailed it to the outside of the house." Once when I was working cell phone support I got a customer complaining that they couldn't make a call; they just kept getting a fast busy signal. I asked them to try another number and they said that worked fine, so I said it was likely an issue on the other person's end. They said they were the person: they were trying to call their own phone.
One time working cell phone support, I got someone complaining that they couldn't turn their phone off. I asked them to try it again. The call dropped.
I was in the audience for quite a few episodes of The IT Crowd. It was filmed at Pinewood Studios in England which has sadly just announced they are closing down their TV facilities but just to be clear it was 100% filmed in front of a live studio audience. All studio sitcoms have canned laughter in them. The simple truth is that an audience can still be laughing into another actors line so they shorten the laugh so this isn't the case. Wherever possible they take the audience laugh from the record night though
That's really interesting, thanks for your insight! One thing I've always wondered, is how do they get the crowd reactions for the few scenes shot on the street?
@@shadowcatreacts They filmed those scenes in advanced and screened them for the studio audience and recorded the laughter. Back in the days of DVDs it was in the DVD commentary.
@shadowcatreacts Great question & it's not fancy tbh, they just wheel in monitors/TVs & ask the audience to respond to the pre-recorded footage a few times. There is a significant portion of S2 EP1 for example that was done this way, I was present for that was shot outside. A sitcom audience record can take 3-4 hours with all the multiple takes, (set-ups between takes) & you are asked to laugh as if you've seen it for the 1st time every time usually by a warm-up comedian who interacts inbetween takes. Oh & just to be clear Pinewood Studios is just falling back on its movie making in future, they just don't see any money in continuing to providing space for TV companies to film anymore. That's still a real shame though
This show is so accurate when it comes to IT work. When I did my time at the IT service desk, I had a call from a user saying their monitor wasn't working. I ran through the usual steps, is it on, do you see the power light, is it plugged in, both into the monitor and into the surge protector, is the surge protector on, etc. I finally walked across campus to their desk and the monitor was turned off
@@nicks.5552 My GF got a steam vacuum cleaner from the bar she used to work at because the owners (who also worked there) thought it sucked, no pun intended, and insisted on buying a new one. Turns out they just never cared to empty the dust container, I'm still using it daily since 2018.
The A-Team theme was such a nice touch. "Do you know one woman who isn't ?" "Well no, but I only know one woman, and she just left the room shouting "THE SHOES!!"."
Oh, this is excellent that you're watching this. There was a style of play or performance that was called "Theater of the absurd", and that's kind of what I feel this show is like. They take a situation that seems like it looks normal at first but then go in a totally weird direction you wouldn't expect with it.
"I came in with practically zero expectations, somehow this first episode still fell outside of what my expectations were." is honestly one of the best descriptions of the IT Crowd!
My wife and I stumbled across this show a few years ago and were instantly hooked with the style of comedy. You'll have fun with this. To this today we say "Did you try turning off and back on" to fix nearly any problem, electrical or not.
There's one episode that is just a masterpiece of writing and I hope everyone involved on the writing staff are doing wonderful things now. I agree with others though, this show just climbs the more you watch and doesn't overstay its welcome.
It's one of my all time favourites, but I have to say, more people need to watch Phoneshop. It was an acquired taste for many in my life but eventually they got it and it's become a firm favourite too. It is somewhat localised in its humour though, but if you've ever lived in or around the M25 it makes it all that better.
There was a diabolical US pilot version of The IT Crowd & it is a carbon copy of "Yesterday's Jam" & Moss was the same actor & only actor from the original series played by Richard Ayoade
Joel McHale played Roy in The IT Crowd's US pilot. It was truly awful. Thankfully it wasn't picked up and McHale was then available to be cast as Jeff Winger in Community. The rest, as they say...
so good used to be on netflix. Roy, Chris ODowd was on the show Girls for a few episodes and hes had a few shows of his own, Richard Acolade is a director and had a travel show and is on some English panel shows, he's really attractive irl. I love his chareter
I know the jokes per second is pretty high in this series... but in the second episode. Mr Reynholm noticing the stress machine the instant he walks into Jens office is one of the best. Then there is the Theater Episode.
In terms of a jokes per second rate, I would estimate that Police Squad! might be just a little higher than IT Crowd, but very few shows are this high.
I've been to a few recordings of UK comedy and quiz shows and have not once seen canned laughter used, they sounded exactly as they did when i was there.
Moss is the GOAT... seriously... as someone who's worked in IT, the worst of me is Roy, and the best of me is Moss.. I wish I was more like Moss, but that's okay.
You seem to like sci fi and fantasy judging by the fact you've watched things like Lost, Buffy and Firefly and if you're watching this you like comedy so I would like to suggest one of the greatest British Sci Comedies of all time. It goes by the name of *Red Dwarf* . You should defo give it a try. First aired in 1988 and despite some breaks here and there for several years is still going on now. The episodes are only short (about 25 mins each) and a season only has 6 to 8 episodes so you'd get caught up to the present day in no time at all.
Oh boy, some of this hasn't aged well but it still has some of the funniest episodes of TV ever (in particular season 2 has my favourite episode of a sitcom ever - The Work Outing). Enjoy! Hope the humour translates - here from your Firefly reaction series.
It's aged just fine if you're not celebrating political correctness. "Oh no, Roy is wearing lipstick and someone thinks he's a cross dresser! The horror!"

"I bet you think this is a picture of my family, don't you?... It's the A-TEAM" has lived in my head since this came out 😂It's incredibly funny
"The jewelry man..." 🤣

One of my favorite shows! Black Books is great too.
I just noticed that during the party planning montage Moss put his bigger glasses back on.
Richard Ayoade is brilliant..You'll love this series..

This is my 2nd fav series next to Parks & Rec, excited to watch it all again with yas. Your lovely smile is infectious btw!
They have so much cool stuff in their office. I could spend hours just nerding out on all the retro kit they have lying around.
I still remember Peter File and laugh every time I meet a Peter

I'm so glad you're watching this! A fav.
Heck yeahh 🖤 love this show!! So underrated
