  • Learn how to play the conga drum in this video lesson for beginners. Known in Cuba as the tumbadora, this South American instrument can be heard in all types of Latin music including salsa, rumba, merengue and reggae, as well as other forms of popular music.
Latin Percussion LP City Wood Congas 10" & 11" Set: amzn.to/1Uz3kQK
Students will practice the seven sounds of the Conga Drum including the open tone (played with the four fingers near the rim of the head), the bass tone or tono bajo (played with the full palm on the head that produces a low muted sound), various slaps or tonos secos (a difficult technique producing a loud clear "popping" sound), and muff tones.
Beginner players will also learn all sorts of practical tips and movements such as "heel toe" finishing with a basic Guaguancó rhythm. Visit dancepapi.com for more free conga tutorials.

Thank you so much. You are an incredible teacher. I am a real rookie and this was so instructive. I haven't even got my conga yet. They will be delivered on the 10th of 12th of June. But I was practicing by hitting on a table. You might be interested to know that I am 77 years old. I have always loved latin music and especially the wonderful sounds and beat of the congas. I probably won't ever to be great, but I will sure have fun trying. Thank you again.

If you're buying new, I suggest the Matador line. They're a little cheaper than LP top-line drums, but they're still excellent quality and tone!

Edgardo Cambon: It is two years since I posted on your site. I got my congas and love them. I play them very often and have played them with a group I am in for public appearances. I absolutely love the drums. I am nothing close to a professional as I started playing without lessons except for some that I saw here on RUclips. Your video was especially helpful. I wish I knew how to post videos on RUclips, I would download a video of my playing so you could see what your teaching did for me. At 79 years of age, I am still playing the drums regularly and loving them. Thank you Edgardo!!

Palm/finger is the proper anatomical words to use.
Heel/toe if we play with our feet.
You are the first teacher to even mention that you don’t like the Heel /toe instruction because it can confuse the student.

So delighted to have found a brilliant teacher. I have played Bongo's for years relying on my sense of rhythm alone. Both my dad and my brother were professional drummers. I just seemed to inherit to sound. I could never afford a tumbadora but out of the blue yesterday on our local flea market I saw a pair along with chrome stand for £60 GPD. and it's not even Christmas! I am now hooked on learning to play them correctly, but I do tend to improvise a lot which I need to get out of. My hands can move very fast. Thank you once again for passing on your skill. I have subscribed to the channel and look forward to more lessons.

🥀 Thank you for your videos. I'm not sure how thorough I'm thinking I want to be with this, if I decide to purchase congas. But I really like the sounds you're creating here. -- I guess I'm a little different from most other commenters, being that I'm a woman, and have been beating on walls, hollow couch arms, etc., most of my life. But I'm in the same age range. Ha My "Latin" blood happens to be Sicilian. lol .
It's funny how many of us in our 50's and up are beginning to explore an old passion for creating these drum sounds !! Peace & love !! 🌹🙋🏻‍♀️

Fantastic! I’ve decided your videos will be my conga lessons! As a drummer on the kit for many years, I’ve recently bought my first conga drums. I’ve been trying to get the sounds and it hasn’t taken me long to realise that conga playing is an amazing art and no way as easy as it looks! This is going to take patience and consistent practice, but I’m determined to learn! Thanks for this video, great demonstrations and teaching style. Thanks 😀

Thank bro ,my family ,(parents, siblings, cousins are very musical with various instr.as well as singing. & percussion intrs. Or toys as we call them.) But for the congas which we always had around ,no formal teaching. Kinda just went by feel. & I prob think I'm 1 of the better (players ,only because I feel I'm playing the "proper or more fitting rhythm that works or compliments the song) but after your awesome getting back to basic fundamental tutorial , I'm going to be On It! With the correct positioning ,and "attack" as well as all instruction you shared , my advice to All is Take this teaching & apply & have fun but practice consistently , im just bummed i wasn't doing it correctly for the past 25yrs but doesn't matter its still a very good feeling when it works , Thank for Sharing your Manao (Hawaii word hard to describe but would be like your " deep, inner, spiritual ,thoughts or wisdom, teachings that you share for good...) yeah so much Mahalo & Aloha✌🤙

As a music lover of India I used to play with the triple congo (maybe an indian derivative), not professionally, to our hindi songs of the 70"s and 80's composed by our great composer RAHUL DEV BURMAN in our school days, which I think every percussionist of Indian film songs do. This man, Rahul dev barman introduced ourselves to the international music, I would rather say opened a new avenue of modern music to India and every one became his fan at once. So this is the brief background of now so called modern indian music and also my interest of learning the actual conga.
Now I am 42 yrs. and again wanted to learn the actual lessons. I searched over the internet and also seen lots of videos of conga lessons, but to my opinion you are the best teacher to learn from and you make it very easy for me because our habits were to play with the fingers of the right hand (middle and right part of the three) and the base (left part of the three)with the left hand (something like the open tone ).
So Sir carry on with your teachings and upload them, so beginners like us will be able to know at least something of Latin music.
    Thank you so much.
    God bless you.

+Axel Presas , muchas gracias. Definitivamente, Obatalá ha estado siempre conmigo desde el 92, y bueno, en realidad desde que nací. Bendiciones a ti y que los tambores te den alegría y fuerza para vivir y seguir adelante. Saludos musicales desde Oakland.

Sami, one of the most memorable performances in my entire career, was many years ago (83-84?) in Tunisia, at a Roman historical site city called "Dougga" as a part of a cultural exchange between France and Tunisia. We played in an old Roman small amphitheater, outdoors at night in the brightest start filled sky I have ever seen. At arrival on site earlier, we thought nobody was going to make it there (audience) but much to our surprise, people start arriving riding bicycles, and real "horse powered" vehicles (LOL)... We play Latin Jazz to a full house of very engaging and responsive audience. I still have the booklet program with some dried tinny white flowers the audience at one point threw at the stage. Was actually an amazing night. I LOVED Tunisia! Keep your drumming OK?
