You are correct but the GC is rated on a scale of 1-10. It's confusing to most and it needs updating for clarification. As a former GC guide, I personally think it's the outfitters that are just trying to hype the river more to make it more impressive. Not knocking the Canyon any, but there's bigger stuff in Cataract Canyon which you can find here on YT.
@@Michael65429 Interesting. Thanks for the info. I'd imagine it does involves some marketing. We portaged around a class 6 this weekend on the Payette and it was way gnarlier than what they are showing as a class 6. In my eyes, it should mean you are risking life, if you run it. .I.e. it's impassable, unless your are stupid and lucky, or professional and still lucky (rafts not kayaks). Seems like there would be some benefit to having a consistent system like they do in rock climbing routes or similar.
Great video, especially without music, just the sound of that wild wonderful river.
What are class 7 and 8 rapids? I thought 5 were the most adventurous and then class 6 meant to portage around them.

Western rivers use a scale to 10
@@oldboater Not any of the western rivers I’ve floated. Payette, Snake, Salmon, Lochsa, Yellowstone, Selway and Rogue. Must be a Colorado thing.
