Why did they cut out the breakdown in the middle of the song? I notice when I'm shopping and hear music in the background they frequently cut out guitar solos too. What's up with all that? Isn't it all music? Nobody really notices these things except the music enthusiasts, who are disappointed that their favorite part was cut out. What's the point.?
i notice the synth break was missing. this was a "promo video" from the 70's - not intended for tv audiences, but for showing to record company executives to sell the band
I have seen STYX live in concert 24 times! These guys are amazing and Tommy Shaw one of the guitarist has had hits in the 80s with a band named Damn Yankees. Would luv ya to do Renegade by Styx
@stevengifford7457 Yes, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass (TJB) were very popular back in the day. Oh and for the (ahem 😅) record, Jerry Moss was the "M" of A&M Records
Great rock band from the 70's-80's. They had so many great songs such as "Lorelei", "Suite Madame Blue", "Lady", "Renegade", "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)", "Babe", "The Best Of Times", "Mr. Roboto", "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Show Me The Way", "Don't Let It End", "Why Me", "Borrowed Time", "Rockin' The Paradise" etc.
I used to go to every concert Styx did if it was in driving distance, I didn't count how many times I saw them. They put on a fantastic show. Definitely watch their live stuff. I loved every song on every album they put out. Great musicianship.
I LOVE Styx!! They had massive airplay on the radio when I was growing up in the 70's. I wanted to be Mrs. Tommy Shaw!!! LOL... I had all of their albums and cherished them and I love their music even more today!! Thanks for a great reaction! I hope you will do more Styx reactions!!
I saw Styx is concert at least 5 times. One of my favorite bands growing up. They have many songs that mix ballads & rock. This is a rabbit hole you must go down! I'd suggest "Renegade", "Suite Madam Blue", "Lady", "Babe", "Crystal Ball".... Shoot I could go on all day! They never disappoint.
favorite show story.... Dennis DeYoung, played outdoors, partially covered stage....about ?5 years ago in a small town in Texas. Waited a long time to hear him and it rained 20 minutes before they were to start, and a lot of their equipment needed to be covered and they were worried and they didn't want to play, but we all waited there, in the rain, waited for the rain to stop, and they asked us... will you stay and wait for the stage to dry a bit, we'll only play 30 minutes.... the crowd shouted and cheered, pretty much begged them to play. HE SOUNDED 👏🏿 FREAKIN' AMAZING, voice practically completely preserved after 50 years in the industry.... incredible
I've never seen this video but definitely this is the studio track that was the huge hit on the radio and that we heard all the time. Must be a music video, either by Styx or by a fan.
The group is not just Dennis and Tommy. JY is my favorite. He rocks that strat. You have to react to Suite Madame Blue the live version. Also Miss America, Snowblind, Renegade, and Mudnight Ride. You need to react tothe longer version of Come Sail Away. This video cuts the middle section out.
“Suite Madam Blue” is one of my favorites of theirs. It was written for the United States Bi-Centennial in 1976. It was about the things that we were dealing with in the country at that time. It is even more relevant today. With the election coming up, it would be a great time to play it. 🇺🇸 Link to “Suite Madam Blue”. ruclips.net/video/CkkQPxoxJJY/видео.htmlsi=1Wd9GlVnJPyU5jlK
Im trained vocalist when go out karaoke i get standing ovations this is song i do alot because it rocks out second half of song these guys sound this way live trust me seen live 2 times
As already mentioned this is a shortened video version put together years after its release for MTV. It is live performance visuals with the studio audio. Missing is the instrumental break. Check out their live performance 19 years after release on their "Return To Paradise" tour in 1996. Styx has a wide variety of song styles - something for everyone with prog rock, jazz, heavy metal, classic rock, and other elements. They have multiple songwriters/lead singers, so check out Tommy Shaw("Man In The Wilderness" or "Blue Collar Man") and James "JY" Young("Young Man") songs also (and before Tommy there was John Curulewski and his song "A Day"). Another Dennis DeYoung song to check out would be "Prelude12/Suite: Madame Blue". With the intro. track and multiple movements it has a lot of different things, including heavy metal".
There's a whole brilliant psychedelic middle section that is unfortunately missing from this short video cut. It gives a different feel to the ending twist reveal about the angels being starship entities.
A lot of 70s bands made videos playing to their studio tracks. This was before MTV so I think they were maybe promotional videos. Anyway, Styx didn't just do power ballads, they were arguably the creators of the genre. Their hit single "Lady" from 1973 is generally considered to be the first power ballad. The Carpenters released a ballad a year earlier with an electric guitar solo, which was unheard of at the time and mocked, but may have been the stepping stone that led to power ballads.
Renegade is still in my top 3 faves by them, they were never one of my very favorite bands but they did have a lot of good songs that I still know all the words to ha!
Styx live performances were always known for being just as precise and perfectly done as an album production............At least while under the leadership of Dennis DeYoung.
Unfortunately, you played the single edit version. The full version has a synthesizer solo. Tommy Shaw replaced John Curulewski after their first A & M record, and he is also a key writer. Deep dive into this group. Gotta play "Renegade" or you may already know it. The Pittsburgh Steelers football team use it at their home games. Catch it tonight when they face the Dallas Cowboys.
Styx is the name of the Greek mythological river of the underworld where the boatman Charon ferries souls across (not made up). But this band had some fire songs: try Renegade next.
I sat 5th row for Styx & Foghat (Foghat opened) 1979 Cleveland Coliseum. Fantastic show...However Styx had a pyrotech show at the end and sparks were landing on the 1st 10-rows or so. Everyone was getting hit and the band was freaking out watching it! I still have a visible burn scar on my wrist.
You should have reacted to the longer full-length studio album version to get the full effect of this song. This shortened version does not do this song justice at all. The full version is 6 minutes and 6 seconds long.
lol... I laughed when you said a power ballad. Completely understand why hearing it for the 1st time. This came off "The Grand Illusion" album, which is one of those whole albums I can listen to. Some songs were bigger hits, but the whole album is good music. Here's 2 of the bigger songs from it worth listening to; "The Grand Illusion" "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)"
Since I was a teenager in the 70s, I have gone down the Styx rabbit hole once every few years. Pick any of their hits. Every one of them is brilliant, IMO.
Actually, while watching this, my wife sat at the kitchen table doing crafts and started singing. It brought back memories of me belting out this song with her in the car. Thank you.
I love your reactions to the music that has been the soundtrack to my life and times 🤘. This was the "radio edit" laid over a concert video, the album version has a more extensive middle-eight. Grand Illusion is an amazing record all killer, no filler as we used to say 😊 Tioraidh an-drasta 🏴 First time I saw Styx was March 27, 1976 with Rush opening. Rush were touring to support the 2112 album and even though they were the "opening act", Rush stole the show. Actually there was a "special guest" that actually went on first. The Sutherland Brothers & Quiver and it doesn't surprise me at all if you have never heard of them 😊😊 But Rush became my favorite band that night.
I saw them in '77 and '22. Just a few years apart! Can you review their song Crystal Ball please? A lesser known but very cool song. They have a great song list. Many thanks!
Since it was mentioned that the "A" in A&M Records was bandleader Herb Alpert it would be fun to see you react to one of his songs with The Tijuana Brass. "A Taste of Honey", "Tijuana Taxi", "South of the Border" The "M" in A&M was producer Jerry Moss
I’m confused about why many people think that a live performance can’t sound good or even great. There are so many fantastic live albums out there. It’s not like the recording process was perfected just last year. I don’t even question weather this was live or not. If you had experienced this band live you might be convinced more easily. ✌🏼😎🇺🇸
They shortened a lot of long songs in the 70's because some radio stations wouldn't play songs over about 3 1/2 minutes. It really messed up the progression of this song especially. They did the same thing to Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann's Earth Band, so if you react to that (you should, it's awesome) look for the longer one.
I don’t know if you watched South Park, but this is the song Cartman has to sing all was way through if someone sings a few lyrics. Anyway, this is the short version of the song. Definitely do “Renegade” next. It rocks.
You missed the best part of the song, one of the best instrumental sections in history. This is the radio edit. Listen to man in the wilderness next. Tommy Shaw the guitar player sings, and makes the guitar sing in the solo.
Dennis DeYoung is one of the most tragically overlooked and underrated vocalists, as is Tommy Shaw.
Agree! and when the two of them sang together = MAGIC!
You have to do the full version this is the short version
Amen!
Yeah, disappointing without the breakdown section
I have seen STYX live in concert 24 times! These guys are amazing and Tommy Shaw one of the guitarist has had hits in the 80s with a band named Damn Yankees. Would luv ya to do Renegade by Styx
I also saw Styx in concert several times, and they were great. Loved them.
And I thought my seeing them twice was pretty good. 😂😂😂
Can't say how many times I saw them, nowhere near 24 but a handful. A few of them were with Kansas, great shows every time.
Renegade, Too Much Time On My Hands, Blue Collar Man, The Grand Illusion for a start.
YAY!!! LOVE IT!!! Styx 'Renegade' next PLEASE!!!

The underground River Styx that goes to the underworld in GREEK MYTHOLOGY.
Boat On The River is such a creative song for a rock band.
American education.
Plus, nobody READS!!
You must pay the ferryman.
“ charon‘s Obol” 👍
Hey someone besides me knows about that studied a lot of Greek mythology
Lets not forget guitarist/vocals by Tommy Shaw!

Like the river Styx lol...They sound that good live ... Saw them 3 times. 'Pieces of Eight,' 'Grand Illusion', and 'Paradise Theater 'tours...
The mythical River Styx. They do sound so good live. I saw them with Cheap Trick at Freedom Fest in Dallas back in the 90's. I was blown away.
The A&M record label was absolutely huge, and they turn out to be a pretty cool label overall, in terms of how they treat the performers and artists.
It was started by musicians. Herb Alpert is the "A" of A&M.
@stevengifford7457 Yes, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass (TJB) were very popular back in the day. Oh and for the (ahem 😅) record, Jerry Moss was the "M" of A&M Records
I've seen them 3 times since 1979, and they ALWAYS sound this good!1
When I was in high school we cut class to watch them practice before they were famous.
I had an experience like that with the band Heart. So I can totally relate! What a cool thing man.
That's my favorite Styx song! They DO sound that good live! I've seen them twice.
I have seen Styx live and they sound exactly the same live as they do on their albums. It was amazing.
they are better live
OH PLEASE...I hope you did the Long Play version
😢😢😢😢
no he didn't. Sad
Amen!
There is a long version of this song that you should have reacted to. Almost a different song.
Amen!
This was released when I was in 7th grade. Have always loved this song. I was playing air drums watching this.
You definitely need to listen to the full album version of this song!
The Grand Illusion album this came from all album fire every song was great
I used to go to every concert Styx did if it was in driving distance, I didn't count how many times I saw them.
Styx came to my small home town in 1975 before Tommy Shaw thanks for the music!
AAAAhhh you did the version that has the instrumental section cut out!
Love Styx! ❤ grand illusion is my favorite since high school !😅thanks
youtube.com/@tommyshawprivate?si=n95tzWakZTS4Z7-t
I've seen them so many times in concert and yes that's how they sound. Even back in the early years. Just Phenomenal 😊
Thanks to the South Park CD, I can't hear this song w/o hearing Cartman's voice singing it. 😊 This and the Chef singing Chocolate Salty Balls. 😂😂
Sing for the Day is my favorite. Also the combo of Crystal Ball/Snowblind
I totally grew up on Styx in the 70's. Both my parents played all the best of rock which was all rock! I'm 53 & still a major fan of the Styx😊
Renegade is my favorite song by them
Saw them in Michigan. They were awesome and very entertaining! They were all over the stage.
Styx is a river in Greek mythology that you cross at your time of passing into the Underworld which was ruled by Hades
You are correct. But it is also a small river in south Alabama, but no relation to the song.
favorite show story.... Dennis DeYoung, played outdoors, partially covered stage....about ?5 years ago in a small town in Texas. Great great great song! On my permanent playlist forever
Styx were an LP band who happen to have many hits. So underrated.
You got it. Original recording dubbed over concert footage. The best of two worlds.
You need to hear Cartman (Trey Parker) from South Park covering this. It’s amazing!

That was the SHORT VERSION.... Missed the entire Synth-solo
Both legends together and alone❤

Be sure to pick the video that's the longest play time. 👍🏽😁
Renegade should be your next Styx song!❤

They have many many great hit songs.
There's a whole brilliant psychedelic middle section that is unfortunately missing from this short video cut. It gives a different feel to the ending twist reveal about the angels being starship entities.
The Grand Illusion this came from whole album awesome
You're right. It's the studio recording with live video clips.
Man you just hit the POWER part of the power ballad.
"Lady" is considered to be the very first power ballad, also released in 1973.
OK now you have to check out Renegade it's a freaking banger. Great reaction and Peace out 🙏 ✌️ ☮️

yes this is the AM radio version. You need to hear the album cut.
Right..did this all the time..show live performance with audio version to have the best of both worlds!😊😊😊😊😊
The 80s were the years when "music rubberhosed the air".
PLEASE react to Billy Thorpe -Children of the Sun
Yes, Great tune!
Styx was the river you crossed to get to the underworld in greek mythology
Play the song ,angry young man, live, and watch Come Sail Away,Live to see the band in true form.😊Lady is a great song also. Thanks Brett
Well now you have to listen, to The Babies! ❤
Styx is the name of the Greek mythological river of the underworld where the boatman Charon ferries souls across (not made up). But this band had some fire songs: try Renegade next.
Renegade next for sure
Dennis Deyoung Has Had A Successful Solo Career Also 😊
I sat 5th row for Styx & Foghat (Foghat opened) 1979 Cleveland Coliseum. Fantastic show...However Styx had a pyrotech show at the end and sparks were landing on the 1st 10-rows or so. Everyone was getting hit and the band was freaking out watching it! I still have a visible burn scar on my wrist.
Gotta check out Renegade and Blue Collar Man for their hard rocking. Also Suite Madame Blue which is a song about the birth and growing of the USA.

Their song Crystal Ball will blow you away 🤯
Maybe the band from Chicago that you were thinking of was Chicago?

Lot of great music out of Chicago and Central Illinois
Named After The Fictional River In Hades In Greek Mythology!
That was a shorter version.....theyres a great little riff the keyboardist knocks out
Yeah, Renegade next!
From tall ships to starship, make it so , number one
I saw them in '77 and '22. Just a few years apart! Can you review their song Crystal Ball please? A lesser known but very cool song. They have a great song list. Many thanks!

Since it was mentioned that the "A" in A&M Records was bandleader Herb Alpert it would be fun to see you react to one of his songs with The Tijuana Brass. "A Taste of Honey", "Tijuana Taxi", "South of the Border"
The "M" in A&M was producer Jerry Moss
I’m confused about why many people think that a live performance can’t sound good or even great. There are so many fantastic live albums out there. It’s not like the recording process was perfected just last year. I don’t even question weather this was live or not. If you had experienced this band live you might be convinced more easily. ✌🏼😎🇺🇸

As in the River of ....
Great song. I suggest another Styx song, "Renegade".
Different kind of sticks. It's referring to the River Styx from ancient mythology.
I don’t know if you watched South Park, but this is the song Cartman has to sing all was way through if someone sings a few lyrics. Anyway, this is the short version of the song. Definitely do “Renegade” next. It rocks.
