- Tomorrow the new HBO Max adaptation of the Gossip Girl is gonna be released, and for this reason, I am reviewing the show's fashion. Does it hold up compared to the original? Is it going to deliver on the iconic characters and looks?

It’s so weird that shows and movies nowadays have so much trouble styling for this generation. Like it feels like the stylists they hire haven’t gotten the memo that the 2010s are over and what’s trendy has changed . It’s also just upsetting because there are so many great trends and styles now that they could utilize ,especially with a lot of these reboots

The fashion for this show is good but not great. The original show had a wider variety of styles which is what made all the characters unique. Chuck Bass had this very dandy/ Lord Disick kind of style. It was very dapper, but the colors were so bright and out there that it felt modern. Nate had this school boy charm look which really worked for him. Dan had a hipster style. Serena was boho. Georgina was a darker boho. She dressed like Serena except her outfits were much more edgy. Jenny was a very luxe take on the punk style. Vanessa was if boho took a very street wear approach. Blair’s style was very classic. She was inspired by the likes of Audrey Hepburn. She wore a lot of color and prints which modernized her looks. The style in the reboot doesn’t feel definite yet because everyone dresses pretty similar. I think I’ll really have to watch to see if there are any standouts.
Yeah I feel exactly the same so far, I hope they differentiate them more, but we’ll see where they go with it in the future, they have tons of time since the show was already renewed
Chuck’s style went from atrocious to boring. Let’s not romanticise the original GG.
@Michael Obiabumuo The point of the comment is that his outfits were distinctly “Chuck Bass”, from the first time we saw him in the pilot. I think he looks good in the later seasons too! Really shows the growing maturity of his character.

Yesss, I feel like if you took an outfit from the show and asked anyone who watched it to tell who it belongs to, they’d be able to. For better or worse, each character had a very distinct style. A Blair outfit is very different from a Serena, Vanessa or Jenny outfit. From the pics, I’m not sure they managed that with the reboot. But who knows, maybe as the episodes go on, that will get better
After watching the first episode, I feel liek the critics exaggerated their reviews. It’s definitely not a 1/5 or a 2/5 like I’ve seen a lot. I think people are forgetting Josh safran said it’s not gonna be like the original at all. I really liked the visuals of teh shwo, it’s very pretty to look at. Other than that’s i was pleasantly surprised
Yeah I thought the visuals were good even in the trailer, I’m curious to see how accurate their assessment will be, especially after more episodes come out

Yeah I’m not hating or anything haha both the original and this show have questionable styling here and there, and this show seems to have a higher budget for the first season so I’m hopeful that they’ll have more pieces to style with and experiment

Exactly so many people are hating on the show like wtf it’s actually good they’re judging it over one episode when it’s actually fantastic
I completely agree about the OG cast doing a great job in photo shoots- I always remember the Rolling Stone (I think it was rolling stone) photoshoot with Blake and Leighton eating ice cream cones and it was sexy and funny and outrageous and really drew you in to the actors as well as the characters. This new cast just seems so bland compared to the OGs. Maybe they’ll start standing out as time goes on.
The show knew what it was and what it was going to be for the next couple of seasons. Outrageous, raunchy, extra, and a great act of escapism, so the marketing was exactly like this. Also, the OG cast were some of the best casting choices I have seen. The characters and their actors were so distinctive and well fitted. Plus, they truly found some gems, the charisma the cast had was out of this world. Really unfortunate most of them didn’t have a successful acting career after that, but it’s a common thing with iconic tv shows. Taylor, leighton, Blake, Sebastian.
honestly the original gossip girl fashion was questionable at that time and they were bold and tried new stuff, i think that’s what they’re trying to do now so i’ll support them and i like the new style

I don’t think that they try to look “lower class”, they just wear casual clothes
I’m not talking about casual clothes, there are some ways that some ppl definitely try to look like they are not super privileged and I’m hoping they’re not gonna go this route for their wardrobes

I saw a tweet that said people's nostalgia really distorts their perception of thinking that the original gg was classy instead of really accepting it for what it was; a cheap CW show with bad 2010s fashion here and there (not that the og was horrible). There are people who've already seen the first episode and are saying that it's not bad, so I wish people would just give this a chance because the budget seems like it might even give us something more.
It's rated so low because it's coming from older critics giving their opinions on a show that's not meant for them so ofc they're not going to like it. And it being a "woke" show (may or may not be) false because one of the actors spoke out against that certain article or post and said it wasn't true.
these "bad" reviews from critics are giving the same energy as the og gg posters that had risqué pictures of the characters with bad reviews written on them too, if yk what im talking about
Oh I’m still willing to give it a chance and I don’t think that the fashion is drastically worse or better, but it’s not good(at least not yet). we’ll see how they go about everything in this season and the next one

The outfits aren’t 2010 style at all. They don’t even look out together. The style is what people wear these days but it’s distasteful. I watched it and it’s straight up trash. The outfits are poorly put together, the cast look way older then their ages, the story line is boring and the camera lense color is dull. The 2010s show atleast made everything tasteful and interesting

Honestly, Gossip Girl is so much more fun when you can enjoy these evil and privileged characters’ pain, I don’t understand why they’re trying to make them sympathetic
Yeah the whole point is that people in that privilege can’t really understand what it’s like to be on your own
Cancel Culture wasn't a thing during the OG Gossip Girl's run so you could have an entire cast of characters that would be considered villains today and fans still loved them and rooted for them. I think this new show is trying to be cautious because if they make these characters half as messy, villainous and problematic as the original characters, the new target audience might stop watching or attack the show for promoting bad behaviour. I mean Chuck attempted to rape two girls in the pilot of the original show and he still became a fan favourite. That would never fly now and they're trying to be careful. Unfortunately it feels too careful and the show comes off as safe and dull so far. Gossip Girl is supposed to exist as a omnipresent overseer who punishes heinous behaviour of people who are rich enough to be eaten and their awfulness is why GG exists. If they're self aware and good, then GG serves no purpose and that's what the reboot fails to see.

The OG Gossip Girl was a little bit before my time so I watched it some years after (and really enjoyed it), but I´m not that emotionally attached to it like many people are with the intense hate they have for this reboot.
What was really annoying was seeing people´s critisism for the main cast when it first came out, a lot of people had really racist and micro aggressive undertones, such as people saying that they dont look rich like the OG´s etc. I´m personally really exited to see a WAY more diverse main cast and I´m looking forward to seeing everyones parents (since they also had a bit part in the original).
The fashion in ep1 was a bit meh, but there´s still many more episodes to come (and a second season). All in all i think some people are just mad about the reboot witch happens whenever a reboot is announced and some are just hating or overly criticizing to just do it, but eventually turn out to actually like it.
Omg yes I definitely agree, I noticed it in my comments too under the gg videos, there’s definitely a lot of people who are unhappy about the diversity, but just like I said in my fashion review vid of this show, I think it’s more representative of what New York actually looks like. The original cast was way too white.
Yeah I think they’re probably going to have better looks later on. My impression so far is in the middle, they can go anywhere from here haha
I watched the original and watched first two episodes of the new one.
And even im not crazy about the fashion im enjoying the plot very much.

Yes Its a show about Rich kids but maybe this time the producer said lets give this time more focus to a good plot.

I do not care for the og show at all but I’m actually excited for the reboot! basicgorl’s yt video about the show made me excited for it. As for the fashion, I really hope we get iconic outfits or maybe even start hair trends?? The buzz cuts in this show are to die for. Anyways, I don’t think a show has had iconic fashion lately except for euphoria so I hope this show has a few memorable outfits. basicgorl made a comment that since the new girl is an influencer then she’s wearing biker shorts to seem more relatable although the fanny pack still reminds them of her wealth. I think it may be hard for the production team to balance the rich and preppy aesthetic with experimental and trendy fashion but I really hope they figure it out, they have the budget to

It's funny to me this feeling that this reboot is too soon. I feel it too! But then with iCarly, let's say, (not exactly a reboot but it'll do) I don't feel the same. With iCarly, it seems like the right time for them to come back and with GG it just seems a bit rushed idk

I just watched the first episode and I have really high hopes for the reboots. I honestly did enjoy the episode however I did find some of the dialogue weird. It lacked the drama the original had but it is only the first episode. I did get nostalgic listening to gossip girls voice. Overall I’m so excited for it.
Yeah I think the lack of mystery(not just “who is gossip girl” but also a mystery like why did Serena leave, why is Blair mad etc) is kind of making it less exciting so far

that's the same here in canada, so usually it's not ppl who grew up in wealth, so i don't see it as appropriate for these super rich characters
Something about how they wear their uniforms fit looks frumpy. It's not "I'm drowing in my clothes but I'm comfortable and it's nothing" it's "I'm probably wearing the wrong size so my clothes are eating me 👁👄👁help lol" 😭😭 and it's stressful because I often like the baggy look. I hope the show is shot and assembled in a way that takes away from that (through angles and lighting and whatnot).
I also think the fannypack agenda is to do with flaunting money (I think the first shot was an LV fannypack?). Which if I have a fair idea of the show, I think it adds up; it's a noticeable accessory (vs if she wore brand name glasses which would only be noticeable upclose)and shows that the character is money. But trends move so fast, the sight of a fanny pack might age the show😅 It'll probably make money though (the show) despite the fashions because of the name it's carrying.

The style on this series is great, w great selection of cool brands like Sies Marjan and Christopher John Rogers, but where’s the individuality? Where’s the statement? Blair’s style is almost instantly recognisable, the headband is iconic. I haven’t seen the show do something like that as of yet,
Yeah me neither but I think I’ll have a more well rounded assessment when the entire season is out, since it would be a bit more than just a few looks. So far I can’t really say that there are any iconic looks
Yep, all the characters have a very specific aesthetic, plenty inspired by different type periods which is why I guess it stood out among the 2000’s lifestyle fashion even tho it focused on maximalist traits as well.

I feel like the fashion in this new reboot is like this generation. It’s ALL OVER THE PLACE! The reason why the OG GG was amazing including the first season writing, but also how well the outfits were put together, and they also took risks in colors. Plus the og GG had timeless classic looks that could still be worn today. I loved your video review.

I like the new reboot . I think the fashion is grate very of the times very New York chic , I like the “street style uniform ” . The only part I don’t like is that they tell us who gossip girl right in the first 20 mins . The boy never really did anything to the uniform in the OG gossip girl they wouldn’t try as hard like the girls did So I’m not really expecting much for the boys uniform in this reboot

@@LisaFevral I know they preferred to develop the personality of the sisters and queen b's boyfriend more than the other characters and that it's a little early buuuuut ; He seems to be a bit passive in the relationship his girlfriend seems to be more dominant, and she's super into Chuck 2.0 so I think they're going to do a 3way and it's going to end up in some mistake. Especially standing next to old money royalty like Serena and Nate were. They were essentially American aristocrats.
i used to live in nyc and went to school on the upper east side (i lived in the west village) and the outfits on gossip girl are wayyyyy better than irl. like at my school girls basically just wear aviator nation, princess polly, and golden goose, and the boys just wear vineyard vines, supreme, and fake gold chains

I actually think the reboot will be good. the styling is slightly questionable but also the styling in the original was never my cup of tea minus some of Jenny’s on point outfits. It’s the same stylist from the original and the items are still designer. I would know because my boyfriend works for a high end website and worked with the costume department on some exchanges. I believe the main queen bee is who brought back gossip girl I think she might be over being queen bee or the concept of queen bee which is why she seems to have so much interest in the new girl. I think the Fanny pack could have worked with proper styling like put it over her chest not around the waste.
Also why they did our good trans sis like that putti no her in all these boxy sweaters and big clothes like you can dress trans people in form fitting clothes people. 🙄
Yeah there were questionable outfits in the original too, and what made it memorable was the way that styling worked with the characters so I hope that it’s the same with the new show. I’m hoping they’ll find a way to incorporate more experimental fashion through characters that are into fashion. The camerawork looks good too. The fannypack that I have an issue with is the lv pack, I don’t really like it but mostly I don’t like the way it’s styled, I totally agree that it would look better over the chest instead of the waist, especially since the way it’s been styled when it came back in the late 2010s was over the chest.
Oh I didn’t know she’s trans! That outfit she wears when they’re sitting on the stairs is cute, but I didn’t have a good pic of it, you can see it briefly in the trailer, and that’s it, all the other outfits are not well fit to her and I hope they fix that soon

Yeah and especially since they have the budget. They also don’t have to dress everyone to the max all the time but they should be able to give us some really good looks, so let’s hope that it’s gonna be a lot better in the episodes (when we see all the looks)

I've seen the first episode & it honestly isn't terrible...like the reboot of Charmed the CW made it into trash. The reboot is ok, though I wish they kept Gossip Girl 2.0 a secret but whatever haha. It was pretty tame & the original had all this stuff in it that this reboot is lacking...Idk something is missing...

My issue with Julian is that she did nothing to hint at how she earned or maintains her status. I was sitting there wondering why there girl with braids wasn't the Queen B. I just don't see Julian as commanding power.

Fr and I don't see the "Wow factor" in her clothing style like in my opinion her clothing looks just like something everyone could wear like it doesn't have something that is really special about it. I hope she will get other clothes to wear for the next season because these clothes (expecally the ones she wore in school) weren't it. (My opinion)
My guess on the belt bags is because the wardrobe department was on a budget and belt bag/Fanny packs aren’t incredibly expensive. Also a lot of the designer pieces they had on set were not recent collections… so they probably got them from outlets and resell…

16:15 the photoshoot is more editorial (or trying to) than pure marketing of the show. Old GG photos were more enticing… the one they were all in the bed…. I remember To this day!
I’ll keep watching, for sure. I was in high school when GG first came out and it has a good place in my heart (except Dan being GG, stupid).

The fashion to me looks like a good update, to me it looks fresh and modern. But it’s not quite there yet, it’s getting there but it’s not there yet, I feel like they are still trying to recreate the original too much yet, like all the girls are dressing like watered down Blair’s. I’m still hopeful tho, having it start off with a Christopher John Rogers was pretty cool. Also from the pilot I don’t really think they are trying to make them woke at all. Like there is a “guilty rich” plus we had dan on the original who was supposed to be the “woke” chracter
Yeah this was made before the release based on promotional info and images, so the whole part was based on the released info haha
I agree tho, I don’t hate all the looks or something (I like the looks on the stairs a lot) but I was hoping for better than the og gg just bc it’s hbo producing it now and I was hoping they’ll get a massive budget for the clothes right off the bat, hopefully more brands are gonna invest their pieces when the show gets more popular

I have never watched gossip girl the original but definately their style was pretty iconic, I get that. This one I saw the trailer and it had literally no substance. It was too dim in the lighting and I don't think they gave enough context to get me excited. Also idk reboots in general are literally trash with the style. Like the Winx one and Powerpuffs, tragic in more ways than one. Love your videos, the heat is killing me too😂❤

The fashion in the show is a hit or miss same with the original but they also share the same stylist so it makes sense but going off the first episode the show seems like okay it’s just as messy and privileged rich people as the original so far and I enjoyed it so far but that was only the first episode it can go downhill from here also the show is really pretty filmed very well and going back to rotten tomato the critics hate it (but critics hate like almost everything) but the audience likes it it’s a 33% to 88% so hopefully the show does well
Yeah I think both have the same amount of hits and misses so far, that’s kind of my conclusion in this vid, we’ll see how it goes, it might get better and it might get worse, we’ll see hehe
It's interesting to hear critiques about gossip girl's on its "wokeness" and self-aware attitude because the last time gossip girl was on air, it was the 2008 recession, and the critique was that gossip girl was too out of touch in ignoring reality when everyone when entire economic sectors were collapsing.
I think what I'm looking for is self-awareness of the writers, not characters. in the original the characters were not self aware which is fine since they are spoiled rich kids, and the issue I think people had was not with the characters being not self-aware but with the writers. That's my guess anyway. In this new one idk yet, I kinda have mixed feeling about it.

I liked the high low dress. It's feminine and floaty
I really expected them to dress Audrey, Luna, and Monet like Heart Evangelista, Elle Fanning, and Blake Lively (her actual girly style) but I was pretty disappointed when they dressed them girly but in a sloppy kind of way.. Also, Monet's outfits were only campy and girly in season 2 but for season 1 it's kind of disappointing..
I really enjoyed Gossip girl reboot but I was kinda disappointed of Julie and her clothing style. Of course it is something that this Generation would wear but when I think of Gossip girl I think of glamor and vintage and Julie (as the Queen B) had none of it. It didn't felt like she was Queen of the school. At first I fr thought that Audrey was Queen B because of her glamorous clothing and the energy and power she showed with it. Julie's clothing is just something that I would wear if I go out to meet with friends or maybe to a public school but not to a private school as the daughter of an well known rich man. (My opinion)
4 episodes in. 1. They aced the generation z and todays refrences without trying to be too woke. 2. The fashion is legit. I would try to dress like Luna and Monet. Period.

i think the trama has a lot to do with the fashion choices for the show, there’s a reason why each character dresses the way he/she does

I liked this show more than original. I watched gg when it was ended and all outfits where already outdated for me. The new show is contemporary for me, i like most of outfits.

i think this is kinda weird as you havent even watched the first episode yet i personally dont like the og style don’t know why its hyped up that much as they only got a few memorable outfits don’t like those outfits either cause im personally not even american haha but i think rich kids nowadays wouldnt wear stuff like that at all i think everyone would be sm about being artsy and different and even looking poor just like you said but maybe teens like in the og gg and in the hbo actually exist idk euphoria or this is us is just way more reletable in generel for me and many others i guess just because of kinda similar experiences also the fashion is what the more average teenager would wear but just in like extremely gorgeous and i just think that rich kids especially in new york would dress more like that aswell but idk maybe they actually exist haha
I made this before the show came out, talking about the promo pictures, that’s why I didn’t watch the episode. I don’t think the og style needs to be in the new one bc it’s super outdated, and there’s nothing wrong with following the way some ppl are dressed now, but some of the styles they use in the new show are outdated as well, and I think that rich kids with nothing but time and money would be a bit ahead of the curve instead of being behind it haha
