*"What happened to fun?"* is the best way to summarise this generation. Like, most characters are either annoying, bigots, boderline criminals or just have tragic shit happen to them. And yeah, Degrassi has always been dramatic but at least the more serious topics used to be better handled. Even that whole Lola tells Shay that she likes Tiny too wasn't really giving "Paige gets Terri drunk before the dance bc she was jealous of her going with Spinner" realness. 😅
The ironic part about this comment is that's basically how Gen Z is, not trying to say we're a monolith, but we are consistently exposed to cynicism due to social media it's hard to not let that affect personal lives. A bunch of Gen Z and even Gen Alpha are going backwards in progress and are bigots due to being influenced and not having other people like their parents to mediate. Granted for a TV show its a bit much to have these topics in every episode, but that's the unfortunate aspect of having 13 episodes a season compared to 30-40 (along with them not being as well written) like the previous degrassi seasons.
@@Tasty_Tango45 I don't think I get what you're trying to say here. Claiming that many gen z/alpha are bigots bc they don't have parents to "mediate" them it's a choice considering it's known that those behaviours are most often indoctrinated by parenting figures and overall related to an individual's upbringing. Even in the show, we had many examples of characters who are like these because of their own parents beliefs, but some were able to change their ways because of their peers. Also current generations are generally WAY more tolerant and sensitive than previous ones, so much that we're often labelled "too woke" or "snowflakes". But regardless of that, my comment was about how sometimes the writers are so focused on having these serious topics on the show that they create characters with such extreme (often unredeemable) traits and forget that the show still needs to be light-hearted. Like, these latest kids barely had fun or storylines just focusing on building genuine/positive relationships.

Degrassi next class or the entire franchise could’ve benefited from having black writers during season 2. As diverse as degrassi is it’s still a pwi (predominantly white institution) and they could’ve done so many stories that season with Shay experiencing micro aggressions from her white classmates or Tiny being racially profiled because of his appearance. They completely dropped the ball when they handled BLM. Instead of Shay and Tiny being in the center of the story it was Lola.
As an adult rewatching this series I could relate to the emotions and secondhand embarrassment of the stuff happening. This new series feels like it's unabashedly for kids. You really hit it on the head when you commented on how unrelatable TNC plots were. They had a few great ideas that were not executed the way it should have. So many recycled plots that added very little new ideas to the discussions they were going for.
for me the reason why next class is so bad is due to so many different factors. the inconsistent writing choices (which is due to the cancellation & then reviving the series for netflix), the costuming, set dressing (they apparently switched to a soundstage instead of filming in a real school around this time), storylines, the decision to go with 10 episodes a season just fucking awful. and that's saying something considering the 40 episode seasons, the stepcest storyline, & clare dressing like a teacher.
i love that me deciding to rewatch degrassi and you uploading this degrassi content both conveniently happened at the same time. also you mentioning the "social disease" got me ngl lol
i used to have a degrassi podcast that i had to abandon with my friend since it just wasn't working with our schedules, but i always rewatch the show on my own and love consuming degrassi podcast, and your takes are so funny
Degrassi: Next Class wasn't "REALLY" a continuation series. It was basically still TNG but with a new title, like how Seasons 10-14 was simply "Degrassi" without "The Next Generation" subtitle, but still part of the show's run. If you notice in the end credits of these episodes, it lists "Based off Degrassi Junior High & Degrassi High" like in the regular TNG series and not "Based off DJH & DH & Degrassi: The Next Generation". The entire "Next Class" was actually Season 15 already in the bag before the network cancelled it and I guess when Netflix took over the show they retitled it to make it something "new" for their brand. But the "Next Class" title made no sense because we're following most of the same characters we left off with! Also, the show constantly has characters coming and going each year. If the show continued more after the current clan graduation, what would they do then, call it "The Next NEXT Class"? Netflix should have left it as "Degrassi" for obvious reasons. There was no need to put in another "Next" anything when the whole reason "TNG" was taken off the title was due to the revolving classes once the original cast members were officially out of the show. -_-
Omg yes girl please turn into a Degrassi podcast and just reach out to every single cast member to see which ones will take a guest spot and the more you get the more will come 😍
OG who grew up with the og Degrassi characters grew up and didn't want to watch highschoolers anymore. Next Class was cute but by the time it got there you could tell that the writers were just trying to throw anything at the wall seeing if it'll stick. All the stories were told in The Next Generation. Sure we had smartphones and edgy hair, but nothing was fresh or done differently. I miss Degrassi, but it didn't know when to quit, so it just... ended.
So if you know that they wouldn't be voting for Trump or Biden or whatever why bring it up, because you don't like those characters Trump isn't an equivalent to racism like that needs to stop he's just a presidential candidate whether you agree with him or not. That's weird to compare characters from a Canadian show to oh yeah they're racist so they'll vote for Trump know that's not how that works
Ik it gets not only annoying but one more. This past year if people have been paying attention it has been shown that both Republicans and Democrats (which really are not too dissimilar nowadays) are capable of insanely racist things. A good example is that guy Stuart Seldowitz who was harassing and threatening the Egyptian Halal Cart Vendor. It’s also just dumb because these characters are Canadian they not only would not vote for either but actually have the choice of multiple distinct parties.
the way you are thinking about what characters would be a trump supporter is taking me out. since yesterday the guy that plays Dallas made a post saying he was. 😭
finally someone who sees declan the way i do! also yeah, should have never happened, like degrassi was already soapy and this gen pushed it over the top
Becky at the beginning of S12 could've very well been a Trumpie, but I feel like after that she became more open-minded & wouldn't support someone like him. Her brother Luke, on the other hand...🤮
tommy you did a “degrassi plot lines that made me sick (?)” video but it must have been deleted. i have been looking for it because you made a beautiful edit at the beginning of the video and i was wondering if you still had it anywhere?

Hi love, I know there's a bit of confusion on your part, but "catching a stray" means “to be unexpectedly and casually insulted in a seemingly unrelated discussion or argument,” which I did for absolutely no reason at all (this video was about Degrassi not my hot bod 😭) ♥️. From a fellow hater I respect your hater ways! ☺️❤️
the ONE thing i like about next class is that it introduces the show’s first Native character, Grace Cardinal. i’m Native and i rarely saw Native characters in shows unless it was shows created by us, and it made me feel “othered”. it kinda pisses me off that it took until the show got bad to do it, but at least it’s something 🤷♀️
Leave VJ alone💀😭 from what I remember he was one of the only good ones in the the next class. I agree everyone did a u turn or they honed in on one of their little flaws and made it their personality. I lost interest in degrassi once Clare, Allie, Imogen , and all them left. I loved Adam and I was sooooo fucking pissed with his ending like don’t make me come to the studio rn. The plots started slipping and I liked Tristan, Lola and a few other characters in next class but not like the other seasons.
luke’s cameo intro was so cute 😭
perfection
Maya’s mental health arc was done really good, it showed how Cam’s death really affected her. Hunter’s and Esme’s mental health storylines however…
*"Thank god for Maya's depression"* 😭😭
Certain storylines in Next Class were great like Maya’s mental health but others were boring asf!

Hunter’s pew pew storyline was so glossed over and in the time it aired, that was a horrible message to send
You know what he did after his storyline to show that he “changed”… he called Muslims terrorists.
