Zoinks! I just realized Adam and Fiona weren't on the list !!
ADAM -- I love Adam :( He's such a funny and sweet guy, and I thought Jordan Todosey did a fabulous job bringing him to life. As the conversation around trans folks in the media has evolved, so too have attitudes about cis actors portraying trans characters, so while I enjoyed her performance, I'll always prefer the job go to a trans actor. Adam for his own sake is incredibly kind, warm, and fun to watch, and he always brings a certain levity to scenes that helps immerse you into the episode. I thought his death was horrendous -- there were any number of ways they could have written him out of the show, so while I know that Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn have regrets about the way it was handled and turned into a texting-while-driving PSA, I'm not letting them off the hook for that. I'm still mad about his death, because it reframes the scenes he has in 11 and 12 when you know there's a ticking clock over his character at all times. It makes it hard, upon rewatch, to get invested in his relationship with Becky, something that should otherwise be a show highlight.
FIONA -- My heart and soul !! Annie Clark said it best when she said "Is there anything more wonderful than 'Fimogen'?" Fiona and Imogen have one of the best relationships on the show, and Fiona is a genuine delight from start to finish. Her struggles with addiction and opening up to people I know are extremely relatable to so many, and Clark brings such a kindness and warmth to her portrayal that it's hard not to smile whenever Fiona's on screen. For a character who was involved in as much drama as she was, the friendships she formed were enduring. What makes Fiona work is kinda like what makes Willow work. It's not just a delightful actress with great comedic timing, good representation or sharp dialogue. It's heart. Making her kiss Declan during Manhattan was beyond weird though. Points off for that.

Johnny was not black holed. He graduated. With honors. He also had a cameo later on in an Allie storyline as a college student. By that time he'd cut his hair and developed a cleaner look. It had been in the background of a lot of plot lines ever since he was introduced that Johnny was actually really smart. The writers didn't do enough with this but he wasn't black holed.
Darcy is a character i don't find likeable at all but i think she's verryyyyy well written

They did Adam so dirty. But I love his character. I remember being 10 watching it and I was confused because they kept calling Adam Gracie and I later found out Gracie was his dead name and that he was trans.
It was definitely weird in the beginning, but I was glad I was exposed to it at an early age because it lead me to be compassionate and accepting. I legit cried during his graduation memorial at the end of season 14.
My body is a cage will go down in history as important media for trans youth and his death will always make me shed a tear.

As a Muslim, I cannot STAND Goldie and her storylines. Everything was about religion and being hate crimed and being mean to her gay cousin who isn’t her cousin??? I just feel like they could have done so much more than just make her a hijabi side character

I always think it’s weird that Jake didn’t come to see Clare in the hospital either. Like at that point Darcy was a distant memory lol but I feel like in season 12 they finally had a nice sibling-like relationship and it would have been cool to see him visit her

Manny's dad never found out about her abortion, her mom took her to get it but she didn't tell him. Her dad kicked her out for wanting to be an ACTOR lmao. Also Emma does suck but I think she was justified in speaking out against that right wing programming the school was showing to kids in exchange for computers(a real thing that happened in Canadian schools apparently). They act like there's no other way for the school to get computers besides taking money from this shady corporation... but they live in the incredibly wealthy city of Toronto! The city should be giving the schools adequate funding so they can cover their student's needs.....

If I had to rank Degrassi friendships, Jimmy and Marco would be top-tier. Jake and Mo would probably be second best tier because while they were cute they just didn't feel as bonded as Jimmy and Marco

48:51 I've always wondered if they could/might use Liberty's son as the framing device. He's roughly the right age (Tyson , Jenna's son would be a bit young yet) and I think you could do a lot with him finding out about his family and reconnecting with Liberty.

I TRULY believe he has some of the biggest character development and growth that is most realistic to real people in real life!! Spinner has ALOT of flaws, jist like real people, and through the show its shown him being educcated, maturing, And growing!!
Agreed! He said that Holly J had the best character development, but I thought Spinner's was better. Yeah, Spinner started off as a shitty person, but we watched him truly change for the better throughout seasons 5-9.
I completely agree! On each of my Degrassi rewatches, I fall in love with Spinner’s character every time!

I don’t like spinner either, but definitely don’t hate him. I just REALLY didn’t care for the fact that jimmy got shot due to his lies. I know he was a kid but still I have never had that bad of a day where I I blamed something so horrible on my friend. I did feel for him when he found out about Jane though. And I was happy to see him on NC.

omg yes finally someone who agrees that Zane was bad - the way he kept pressuring Riley to come out but then saying "yoU DoNt HAve To" to try and make himself seem like the better person was infuriating!! Riley deserved so much better. Him and Peter would've been so cute and it would've helped Peter's redemption so much! also more bisexuals would've been great!

I also hated how Zane constantly pressured Zane. Even after her knew his mother denied it. In a video NotAVampyre did a video about it (I haven't watched it yet just read the comments) and someone said that him and Riley were on different points in their journies and I agreed. It lead to inevitable clashing

I mean he could be a bully sometimes in the early seasons, and he was really unaccepting of Ashley not wanting to look like her old self....but with that second thing he did make some effort, he probably shouldn't have gotten back together with her in the first place...
And he redeems himself as a bully after the first couple seasons by being more of a protector almost. So don't take this to mean I don't love Jimmy, but he too had his flaws. Just less than most on the show

We have so many of the same opinions, thank you for the shout-out! I'm honored to have contributed to so many people's Degrassi eras. I'm not gonna lie I actually recorded this exact video concept at the same time I was making my original Degrassi vid, but since at the time I only had like 60 subs I thought "There's no way anyone will watch like 2-3 hours of me doing this" but at some point I might have to revisit it! Anyway I'm rooting for the Drew and Zig himbo buddy spinoff

Came here hoping for a Tristan defense and I got it 🌟 I feel exactly the same, I too have an "abstract" love for Triles that's mostly dependent on Thunderstruck lol. I remember watching that episode kind of in disbelief! Idk if I've ever seen another show allow a gay character to date a someone like Miles that wasn't previously established as LGBT (and had even been kind of the heartthrob of the show that season.) So often on teen shows they introduce a whole new character specifically to date the gay or bi person (Dylan to Marco, Zane to Riley, Jack to Imogen), and it always feels like a lame afterthought. There was something so triumphant about letting Tristan actually get the guy he wanted!! That nobody knew was bi! And then all of season 14 and NC happened. Also not to be that person but hating pre-s14 Tristan smells like homophobia to me. Obvi he eventually said some questionable stuff, I hate that they made him lowkey biphobic especially when the actor himself seemed to not agree with that, but before that he was just like... a high camp gay guy? People say they hate like season 12, season 13 Tristan and I can't help but think they just don't like unabashedly gay ppl lol

I just want you to know that you are responsible for my rethinking opinion of Tristian (I was originally introduced to him in Next Class so I do have a good excuse) but pre- shitty Tristen is alright
Tristan was too over the top flamboyant, which made him annoying, and a stereotype. Then later on he just showed himself to be untrustworthy. Marco, by contrast, was slightly effeminate but not stereotypically flamboyant.

when people bring up the poor treatment of people of color on the show I bring up how the two gay males of color Zane and Vijay were literally given nothing and in the case of Zane...had completely nothing going on outside of his white boyfriend. The only time Vijay got any screen time was when he dated Tristan.

@@LE-zy2od Degrassi has actually been a long running franchise. The first iteration was The Kids of Degrassi Street which aired from 1979 to 1982 but that isn't considered canon. Then from 1987 to 1992 the original Degrassi show aired which is where the characters of Archie, Spike and Joey first debuted so Degrassi is actually a sequel show

I hate when people get mad that Zig's actor wasn't Russian. It's called acting...one is supposed to play a character they aren't.
Sure but giving actors of a specific background (more so when it's actors of Color) more opportunities for roles is a good thing. Historically, actors of said specific backgrounds weren't ever really given roles to play said characters of same backgrounds and are usually played by actors from different backgrounds, so I think it's pretty easy to see why actors of a specific background (like for example Lakota Indigenous or Namibian or Romani) to play a character of the same background would be seen as progressive. Besides a Romani actor playing a Romani character for instance in a situation the actor has never been in is no different besides the actor being of said background

i think the reboot was cancelled. hbo was cancelling a lot of shows and pilots. they didn't officially announce the degrassi cancellation but, shooting was supposed to start in july and never did

What was your opinion on Lucas Valieri? Personally I thought he was admirable for *trying* to be dad but ultimately the asshole for his abandonment once things quickly got heavy, although later on in the show when we see his sister Jane dealing with discovery of their dad, you see his daughter with him so maybe off-screen he matured some and stepped up. I can understand him being frustrated with a sibling for refusing to allow their father in, and how heroic he was when he discovered the truth- Jane is so strong and takes everything on her self but he didnt even ask, just stood up as her knight.

Totally valid! My gripe with Shane's speaking voice isn't his speech patterns as much as it is his cadence and intonation, both of which could possibly be a product of a speech impediment, although it's also just something my ears are sensitive to lol. Didn't wanna harp on it too much because again it's very much not a thing he can control nor is it in any way a valid critique of mine, but it's definitely a thing when watching those early seasons for me y'know?
