SPOTTED: Mina seems to have fashioned up a costume review. Will the designs get the re-boot? Or will she give a little Le-way to a new take on a cult classic? Watch and see for yourself… xoxo Gossip Girl
if Julien is such a trendsetter, why is literally no one copying her style? like that doesn't make any sense, compared to how everyone copied Blair in the og loll
@Mike M Not really. People are still copying celebrities. Maybe in their own style. It's not copying. It's called inspired. People are still getting inspiration from Cher and Fran Fine.
@Mike M deviate from trends altogether…? are we in the same gen or am i trippin. arent we the gen who’s obsessed with having a certain aesthetic, the ones that made 10+ types to categorize one into? like being an egirl, dark academia, coconut girls, soft girl, cottagecore (not saying it’s a bad thing cause im guilty of this as well)… bruh, we’re also in the era where fast fashions brands are booming (thnx to online shopping) which literally rip-off each other’s design. yes, there’s a lot of aesthetics to choose from w/c makes us diverse but at the end of the day we’re still following a certain trend, that’s still lowkey copying
@Mike M remember when quarantine happened and people were dying their hair strands in the front? is that not following a trend? curtain bangs??? wolf cut??? fox eye makeup??? remember that strawberry dress that everyone’s raving about, almost everyone who can afford it bought it when it became popular??? yeah. still a thing boo
I kind of just feel like they’re trying to hard to push how iconic Julien is but there’s nothing about her character that stands out to me. Her fashion is meh, she’s not problematic or heroic, we’re just supposed to believe that she’s incredibly famous and influential. I don’t know if it’s the shortcomings in the wardrobe, the acting, or the writing. I can’t decide
Gonna be honest I buy that Monet and Luna would have been the influencers moreso then Julien I feel like the chose Julien because she has a famous dad so it was easier for her to gain a following
@@susanalopez5052 actually this is such a good point…since when are 75% of influencers interesting people? Like most influencers gain a following cause people like looking at them even if they aren’t particularly interesting or unique people…. Plus amounting large followings isn’t as terrible hard as it use to be especially cause Julien isn’t portrayed as someone who has millions of followers
@@k1k0000 oh shit I didn’t even notice that thank you! I thought they were trying to say she had like. Few hundred thousand…. At the most I would buy a couple million but 12m nah unless her dad is like Beyoncé level famous in this world
I also think what made Serena van Der woodsen work as a character, is that she had the good girl - rich girl persona down pat. I know quite a few rich girls that remind me of Serena. Their fluttering kindness to everyone as well as their slightly out of touch relationship with reality. I watched the OG gossip girl while reading a study on rich kids in American prep school for my sociology class. and there were so many practices and similarities between the behaviors of the OG show characters and the rich kids in the study. I don't see those same behaviors reflected in the reboot. its why the show doesn't seem believable to me. They seem more like actors in expensive costumes than actual rich kids.
Yeah, I totally get you, I would have liked if some of the characters would be socially and politically conscious, like how they set obie up to be the one most in touch with reality. But I totally agree that it feels like they began trying to convince us they were all rich assholes, but then have a million storylines having us empathise with each character. They’ll no doubt attempt to backpedal and have future storylines where they become out of touch of reality since that could create alot of drama within itself. Wish they could have blurred the line between good and bad characters without making them all so empathetic, couldn’t they have the same struggles but still be rich idiots that are out of touch with reality.
yeah i totally agree, the original show felt way more realistic in its portrayal of rich kid prep school culture, and this one feels a bit clunky and contrived.
“The problems i had with the show didn’t go away, i just got used to it” is exactly how i feel 😂 i keep watching to see if it’ll get better but it doesn’t
I don’t think these “teen” shows are actually made for teens. The way they’re sooo sexualised and have unrealistic portrayals of teenagers is very weird…
Exactly, i believe very little portion of teenagers have had this unrealistic escenarios lol. She actually has a video about it. About how this shows aren’t even realistic when your 14/17 meanwhile theres “sex education” for example, where they do look like teens and its more realistic
I feel like teen dramas are shows for millennials/gen x who in a way fetishize being a teenager but are targeted to teens because the characters are supposed to be teenagers
@Zo Leka I think you are totally right! My evidence for this opinion will completely out me as an old, old lady but whatever: I was in grad school in the early 90s and we were all *obsessed* by Beverly Hills 90210 (r.i.p. Luke Perry-Dylan 4ever). Meanwhile my younger siblings who were actual teenagers had no interest in the show. A huge part of the fan base was Gen Xers in their 20s! (And my grandma in her 70s, always a woman who scorned convention). So teen shows have been marketed at an older demographic for a long time. Similarly, everyone I knew was *mesmerized* by Claire Danes in “My So-Called Life”-but the show didn’t develop a huge teen audience and was cancelled. That was a show, unlike 90210, in which the characters dressed and acted like genuine teenagers (Danes herself was about 15 yo). Good call Zo Leka! Let’s check back in 20 years from now and see if the principle still holds!
what i've seen virtually no one mentioning is that we finally got a black girl wearing protective hair styles,, it gives her this modern look since we've seen everything from wigs to natural hair but no protective hair styles lately
@@forgetmenot277 protective hair styles are generally braids, bantu knots, corn rows etc. just anything braided or tied into the scalp! so yes the girl wearing braids
The whole thing about the teachers being behind gossip girl just made me not watch the show. In the age of social media there were so many interesting ways they could have done it but chose the most garbage way to do so.
Same for me, I actually just got into the original series because my friend is obsessed with it and was a bit excited about the reboot until I heard about that plot point. It's just so stupid, most of my teachers wouldn't even agree to my friend request on social media until I graduated high school and I'm expected to believe these teachers who live in the city that never sleeps have nothing better to do with their time than stalk and bully their students?
I only watched the first episode and immediately did not like it bc the teachers are the gossip girl, which is weird for me. I couldn’t even get myself to finish the second episode. And honestly i did not bother to finish or try to watch the other episodes
What really turned me off this show was the fact that the teachers, fully grown adults, spread racy pictures of their underage students around the Internet, and they're framed as the heroes. Wait, WHAT?!
Honestly the only teacher that I like is the brown haired lady because she doesn’t give a damn and she’s fully OK with her decision. Nobody cares about these teachers “should I or shouldn’t I” mentality if you’re going to make a decision like being gossip girl stick with it and make it entertaining
I disagree about the social justice elements in the show not being used for woke points, to me it all felt very performative, like when Obie was at the protest. That whole protest ended up just being used as a backdrop for their stupid love triangle drama, and it ended with Obie and Julien kissing while people were running around getting tear-gassed. I don't think this show tackles any of the actual issues in a meaningful way.
I think they know that though. Obie’s been criticized multiple times for being a performative activist, and people can see through his act (like we did Dan’s). I definitely agree with your point that it’s more empty politics than real ones, but I think they’re tackling the guilty rich persona okay. Obie doesn’t recognize his own privilege staring him in the face, and (I think) that’s the point.
Preach, they creep me out more than anything, but at least both this show and "Cruel Summer" explicitly pointed out that the teacher was grooming their student from the get go, and were blatantly using their position to take advantage of a minor.
@@trinaq cruel summer I haven’t seen anyone talk about to and there is so many important things in there! Like when Katy was telling her parents that them telling her to always accept attention from adults allowed her to be groomed without noticing was a huge one because a lot of parents do crap like that and don’t allow their children to set boundaries which makes them easier to prey on Also no matter how you spin it Katy was a victim and Janet has issues
@@kennyb1588 i feel like Janet was groomed a bit also. Janet was a victim in her own way. Her life got ruined over a misconception, she lost her mother and friends.
The old GG’s costuming mentioned characters having certain pieces that felt very old or might come off as dated but are actually passed down from family and I think that’s a cool touch especially for the old money characters
youre the reason i'm so interested fully in fashion history thank you so much for introducing me to this :)) i have always loved fashion but your channel just exponentially expanded my views and I can't thank you enough sweet angel
Hi, two years late to the party but THANK YOU. Rafa should be in PRISON, and the worst part is that within the two seasons of the show, Max got taken advantage of at LEAST TWICE…my boy deserved a break
@@No1PlutoSupporter I watched the reboot a few months ago (without watching the OG- I don’t have that kind of time) and fell in love with Max immediately (definitely helps that Thomas Doherty played a massive role in my childhood but I digress) and like…why wasn’t Max allowed to be happy? Just let my boy have a moment!
I feel like Bridgerton should have shown producers that we like camp. we want to see colors and campiness and outrageousness. the entire 2010 decade was dedicated to dark edgy shows and I feel like we're over this period. The outrage people had over fate the Winx saga, and the rise of costume commentary youtube in general should be a hint to producers that we want something new. My question is why are they not seeing it, and why do they keep playing it safe, ultimately resulting in meh TV shows no one cares about?
heads up - fate the wix saga has changed a bit of its production team and are working on stuff the fans wanted to see s2 is actually looking hopeful now
THIS!!! I do have my issues with Bridgerton, but oh my gosh, it was such a breath of fresh air to see color and patterns! I'm sick of squinting or messing with my TV brightness and contrast settings to see stuff.
I think it's because when people are making and producing shows they are way behind with what the actual culture or moment is. Winx came out this year but would have been made in 2019 or early 2020. People forget that productions take a long time and what would have been trendy then would have changed now. Like Julien's fanny pack, if they were popular at the time of production or filming of the show and then fell out of fashion by the time the show aired that's no fault of the show.
@@randombrokeperson exactly!! i talked abt this with my sister while i was watching it, did no one in this seemingly "woke" production crew realize that the implications of two white ppl getting the only woc fired to save their own skin is bad?? or did they just not care abt it?
@@jasmim9194 Right! The show tries (way too hard) to be woke, but between that and the protest turned police brutality #moment that involved Julien and Obie making out and humping in an alley while everyone else was screaming and running for their lives... this show can be really tone deaf. I think their wokeness is just another example of Hollywood posturing.
I think what bothers me about the show is that it doesn't meaningfully engage with class, which is a topic I think a lot of this generation are conscious about. Rather than portray the main characters as being clueless rich kids, they make them aware of social issues like gentrification, police brutality, and worker's rights but doesn't analyze how their financial position intersects with their beliefs.
yeah exactly like zoya is still a rich girl at the end of the day she does contribute to gentrification indirectly she should actually acknowledge her privileges
@@stefanmakara373 no so- in the show, Zoya is a scholarship student. The scholarship is funded by Julien’s dad and Julien just paid to make sure Zoya got a scholarship rather than anybody else
As a person who experienced a polyamorous relationship I absolutely H A T E how overly sexualized and romantisized these relationships are portrayed in most Hollywood productions. They take a lot of responsability, commitment and, most of all, love and emotional intimacy
i would love to see a poly asexual qpr and see how they would handle that lol media treats everything as "its cant be interesting without being sexually!!!" its so annoying
It rubs me the wrong way that the poly relationship has a bi man, a pan man, and a straight women. to me it makes to rep feel weird… almost sexualizing not just these identities but tying the sexualization into the poly relationships. ( i’m not poly so if i’m overstepping please let me know) but it makes it seem like these relationships are something sexy and hot when the characters have weak communication imo and aren’t as responsible as it seems needed in these kind of relationships. Overall i agree it just seems so sexualized but hopefully they focus more on accurate and genuine portrayal in the future
@@gabrielleporter553 you're so right, I mean, it's disturbing how ignorant it is to assume that a stable polyamorous relationship is just "going with the flow" and "let's have sex pretty much everywhere". There are MANY verbal agreements and awkward conversations which were NEVER conveyed in the series.
Who wears a loose fanny pack, around the lower waist, over an oversized blazer!! I don't remember that ever being a trend!! It flatters no one!! I'm still upset about this look srly
Shoulder bags/baguette bags or knee high boots definitely could've been her thing. I remembered her from the first pics when they were filming (her with the red fendi baguette and croc print boots) cause I thought she was a baddie and wanted to know who she was. Julien could have that "influence" everyone in new gg claims she's got if they do it RIGHT.
I was waiting for someone to review the outfits! I never grew up watching gossip girl but I know it had a lot of impact on pop culture. I haven't heard much about the new gossip girl so its lack of pizazz says a lot.
The show feels like it's trying too hard. The og was trashy cw show at its best. It didn't take itself too seriously and was way over the top. I feel like the new show is just trying to play it more of the euphoria route of trying to mix darker and serious stuff along with the fun dumb stuff, but is just not pulling it off. It feels too polished and sterile. It needs to have more fun with itself and do some cringey and fun stuff.
I agree. That's what turned me off of the show. Plus none of these characters feel memorable or enjoyable to watch to me in the way that Euphoria cast does. The tone may be dark, but the characters are still colorful. Even say Riverdale. Terrible show lol. But the cast sticks out. They each have a distinct style and vibe that sticks. All these teens just feel...bland
@@tvddamonlovernina I know right. Like they are trying hard to make the dialogue 'iconic' but it comes across as just cringey. Since the setting and tone is going for a subdued and not crazy over the top portrayal unlike the og, the 'badass' one liners just feel out of place.
@@tvddamonlovernina I mean, Monet and Luna have some iconic one liners. Their role just isn’t emphasized enough to hold through. But they are the saving grace of the show: unabashedly filthy rich mean girls.
Fashion-wise, the reboot feels like the "Amber" to the OG Gossip Girl"s "Cher." The OG gossip girl set trends while the reboot tries to copy trends, but is falling just a step behind.
i liked that they made actual Instagram accounts for the characters . even tho the show was so unrealistic it was kinda good that they did something real.
I don’t feel the reboot is less campy than the original, either the same level or even more so, actually. Definitely feels more awkward, maybe with the acting: Leighton Meester nailed Blair since the beginning and her charisma drew me in. And Julien, who was supposed to be this group’s queen bee, is quite bland (reminds me of a Serena type in personality than Blair), other character like Monet, Max or Audrey could be the leader instead. I was a fan of the original and it doesn’t bother me at all they added more politics into it: the original show also had it, but toned it down, like most shows of that era. The way they deal with it, that’s the thing. Something I would like to see is Zoya talk about her own privileges too and go deeper into financial inequality since they’re already touching on it. But it was indeed a disappointment because they marked it like a “new generation of Gossip Girl with all new approach” and it didn’t felt like it. It feels rather stiff.
The biggest problem with the fashion is that the original gossip girl didn’t seek to look like anything that “normal” average income students wear but this one is just that, it’s nothing we don’t see often and it’s not iconic.
YES! Finally someone who understands my gripes with this show! It seemed like everyone online was enjoying it but me (and my friends). I found this show sooo hard to get through which is honestly sad because I was really looking forward to it at first
I must say I was rather underwhelmed with the male fashion in show. Even though Max and Aki were definitely the best dressed, I still though a lot of the outfits were outdated. Yes, I thought they were realistic, but I would love to see some more experimentation. More jewelry, more accessories, diversified silhouettes, less 2018 and more 2021. In saying that, I admit my style is 100% like Aki's, but that's why I would like to see something difference, something I can't pull off IRL...
For the men, I kind of expected a kpop vibe. Just really extra, really expensive. Lots of lace, glitter, jewelry or just really simple but well-cut stuff with maybe one or two eye-catchers. Cause no one does male fashion better than kpop.
mina i just wanted to say thank you for always putting captions on your videos, i’m not exactly hard of hearing but i find it hard to follow along when listening to people speak so i’m always glad when i see subtitles in a video
I think we should remember that they filmed the first part of this season like over a year ago. The trend cycle moves a lot fast than it did back in the original Gossip Girl days. It makes sense that their outfits wouldn't align perfectly with the current popular instagram trends. I personally really liked the costuming on the show.
That is true but still ,a lot of the fashion trends they used were popular years ago ,and there were plenty of trends that they could have utilized that were popular when it was being filmed . It just doesn’t make sense for these supposed trend setters to be outdated in 2020 or 2019 whenever it was filmed
@@pixiedust0003 yeah I know what you mean. None of the outfits felt new and inventive. But, I liked how each character had a distinct style that showed their personality. Hopefully they can build off of those styles but add more modern/experimental pieces in the future episodes *fingers crossed*
That's not the only issue. It's not just that the outfits felt dated, they just didn't look great! I honestly, couldn't ever see myself copying Julien's style, it looked frumpy. And the other girls styles weren't awfully but just weren't anything new. They weren't great visually and even basic simple elegant outfits would've been better than this. There is really a visual aesthetic (and I don't mean aesthetic tropes like cottagecore etc. I mean aesthetic in its natural visual meaning).
But at the same time gossip girl was a true trendsetter and it influenced high fashion for a couple of years in its prime. It had a very interesting take on older fashion trends mixed with the modern age and still to this day feel different and very well thought out compared to most tv shoes who want to reach the same goal but fail in the process.
Most of these “teen” shows are aimed at adults for them to fantasize about when they had no responsibilities but, in order to be relatable, they project adult situations onto teens. I find it distasteful and kind of pathetic but it would make sense.
I'm an adult (a younger one at 23), but either my life is too bland and boring, or producers think teens and young adults are too reckless and racy as they portray them in these kind of shows.
I felt like they channeled Glee rather than GG with the teachers there. And I agree with you, those scenes are unnecessary to the plot and not to be called "hot", its just weird.
You know what I don't like? When they make POC activists for the entirety of the series. Like yea, POC does fight for rights, but to make it the whole character and make someone like that for woke points just doesn't rub me the right way.
Oh I totally agree about the characters being dressed older than their years but also I think that’s a concious choice on the designer’s part to make them all seem ~sophisticated~ to their audience. And yeah I didn’t like the weird shapes being made by their clothes/silhouettes :/. Wonderul vid as always 🥰🥰🥰
I didn’t like maxi’s character he fit right into the mold of hyper sexual bisexual. I thought after the teach situation the writers would let him take more time on being a good friend and process it more that threesome scene and cp video so gross that i skipped over both🤢
Samee! As a bisexual I was so offended. They had the perfect opportunity to show that bisexual people (and polyamorous too) are literally just normal people. Also didn't appreciate how he was kinda predatory to others bc it fits another sterotype that bisexual people are all abusers
i also hated the fact that they made the teachers gossip girl. i was hoping when kate said they would end it, that at the end, the gossip girl instagram would be back, but not by the teachers. that would have been interesting, and the whole mystery of who is gossip girl is what made the original more interesting.
@@kingkris6877 Oh OK thanks that makes sense. Probably I should clarify that this is mostly just a trend with old money people, less so with new money.
As someone who actually had to wear school uniform, it always makes me giggle to see these high-fashion-looking outfits these kids apparently get away with wearing. I looked like a potato sack every day age 4 to 18 and i think we need better representation of potato sack girls who aren’t allowed jewellery, loose hair or visible makeup 😤
Same... I mean, my school was pretty lenient, and my uniform actually resembled Constance's uniform (white short or long sleeved shirt, with a dark blue pleated skirt), but no one could really "accesorize" it besides hair accesories, earrings, sweaters or shoes (when I started there, these could be any size and color, by the time I ended they only allowed 2 colors for each, black and white). No makeup was allowed nor fake nails.
I'm surprised you didn't talk about Aki's style. I'm really confused why they would let Aki have pink hair and wear earrings. It feels to me, they liked Evan Mock's style without questionning if it fitted the character's personality. Aki is supposed to be reserved, calm, a sort of peacemaker. He don't seem to like to stand out. The most striking moment is, when in the first episode, Max proposed to Aki a blue and pink shirt, which he refused saying "i don't like to stick out". He could have said i don't like it or it's not my style, but he didn't and that's important. Si how are we supposed to believe him when he has pink hair? They are still teenagers, it's not that easy to dare that type of hairstyle, especially for a guy ! I would have liked to see him evolved into someone more confident throughout the season, trying new things like earrings, pink hair, etc. But having that style for him already seems too soon.
I'm a millennial but I watched the original Gossip Girl quite a few years after it initially aired and it came across like self-aware satire that enjoyed making fun of itself and playing around with soap opera tropes. I don't feel like it took itself very seriously and was honest about how ridiculous and artificial everything in the show was and I loved that about it. I like that the characters are self absorbed and completely out of touch and I don't think it's important for them to be likeable or relatable. The new GG doesn't come across as playful or self-aware in the same way and just seems like any other teen drama.
i wanted to see an academically strong character in the reboot (basically somebody similar to blair) but probably the closest character to that is only audrey :/
Audrey said that school sucks in Dumbo Hall when Zoya said to focus on that when trying to convince her mom not to leave the city. Monet might be the most academically strong since she mentioned doing the entire pr thing for Julien to get an elite marketing internship the next summer.
Yeah I would liked something about academics, but there’s no academic stakes or talk about school or college. Maybe it’s because the kids are rich and don’t have to worry? I think even mentioning academic pressure would have been nice
I do want to add onto the “teens dressing like adults” concept we’ve seen in TV shows and movies. And why it’s actually not that unrealistic. While it’s true that some teens dress age appropriately and have a more childish sense of style, it’s also not uncommon for teenagers to try and act “grown up”. My sister and all her friends, and peers, dressed a lot more maturely than what you’d imagine a 14-18 teenager to look like. So it doesn’t surprise me that, especially in this scenario, they would try to emulate a more mature style since being “done up” ages you a bit.. and that’s a “good” thing when you’re trying to pass as an adult at the club 😂
I agree with this but as a high schooler the outfits in this show were not “trendy” at all and I’m confused how they were trying to design the fashion this show..
I was in high school when the original Gossip girl came out and I was OBSESSED and have watched it numerous times...so I still haven't watched the new one lol. I've seen photos and watched the trailer but it seems very try hard? That could just be a biased opinion because I love the original, but the fashion in the new one isn't quite on the same level in my opinion. Like you said a lot of the silhouettes don't make sense to me, and you don't really get that "Old Money" vibe from the original. However I will say a lot of the non-uniform clothes worn on the original gossip girl weren't youthful either! They could've been worn by college kids (Or older) especially the night looks... but it somehow worked? The actors were in the early 20s tho so maybe that also helped. Low key sad you made fun of the "grandma brooch" I LOVE those lmao 😂
Your mental organization and the way this video is executed brings me peace, the way you speak & the way you display your ideas with the viewers is amazing
Apparently, I heard through instagram grapevine that all of HBO's costume budget went to gossip girl and not the SATC reboot (the SATC reboot paparazzi pics of the show are getting a lot of attention because some think Carrie's outfits are less than inspiring). Just thought it was interesting that HBO would decide to give more money to a show centered around teenagers vs. grown women that are WAY more established and thus could more afford designer clothes
In OG GG every frame looked like a breathtaking fashion editorial. Based on what we've seen so far, I cannot say I find it likely to get such moments But substance is more important than visual, and let's be real, it's not like OG GG makes a lot of sense after s1
i think they should've had some emma chamberlain inspo, and maybe have other characters in the background wear styles that julian had worn before (to show that she is setting trends)
I was really excited for the fashion and the show because Gossip Girl basically raised me. The OG Gossip Girl slayed the event costumes and the uniforms but this new one is so bland in every way possible. The plot, the costumes, the characters just everything
Yea it was a total flop. And I bet you that you can blame all of these people who crying about gossip girl being too raunchy. Gossip girl was always advertised as crazy dramatic steaming parents worst nightmare. But all of these prudy sensitive people getting offended by a fiction series is why they had make the reboot as bland as Karens dinner spaghetti. Like what is up with these people, just don't watch if you don't like it. Especially if something is advertised as being bad it's going to be bad, not good with a shining halo.
I think that they would've been better off going with the old format. But especially USA citizens (not to offend anyone) had so many complaints, I really didn't see any other countries having problems with the show. I wish they'd done US version and normal version, like so many other shows and movies and music have done. That way we could have gotten a great show. But to be fair it's American show so I guess it has to suit American style.
@@Pinkpinkybear oh I totally agree. It’s soo bland. Was only there for the fashion because NO gossip girl spin-off show can ever be as good as the og Imo. But even the fashion wasn’t realllllyyyyy inspiring. Like og gg, campy but glamorously campy. And I think they could’ve gone the same route. But it’s okay. Maybe they’ll change it won’t but it’s not bad at all. Just can’t help to think about og gg. So that’s why I feel like this.
@@anyone1111 Yea. Og gg was so big trend setter! It was that time when brands didn't do TV, but gossip girl got fashion back to TV! I knew before the reboot started that they toned it down a lot. But when the fashion isn't even it, there's nothing left in the show. They really removed everything, all the things that made gg the gg was taken out. I think they really should've just make completely another but similar show because gg format without the ingredients of gg is just not gonna work. Yea it's not bad show! but it's a bad gg show.
@@Pinkpinkybear YES everything I absolutely agree with. Gossip girl has its own tier in tv that just can’t be released as another tv show- well that’s fresh in its own way- nowadays it seems sadly. But thank goodness it was made as it was because my fashion loving self (and I’m sure you are a fashion aficionado too) just couldn’t be without this show and how lovely it is no matter how many times I rewatch it lol. But yes they removed everything that I like about the show. It seems like that’s kind of the trend nowadays. Like any spin-off or new tv show from a book is just not it. It doesn’t measure up in the way that it could have which is so sad because I’m sure it can get better. But the question is will it? And will people who may have never seen gg like it anyways? (Which they’re missing out if they haven’t seen it omg!!)
You’re right of course, about them being styled older. But I must say, when I was in my teens in NYC I would definitely go thrifting for fits that aged me up so I could go to bars, so in this case I think it’s true to life.
I think most teen dramas entered specifically around Gen Z can't seem to get the lingo right either, the scripts come off really corny and superficial and gen z isn't as superficial or stupidly regurgitating moot points as they seem... the costuming + language is deffo missing what gen z has been bringing to the table on tiktok and insta - I needed to see a lil more mentions of the brands they were wearing in the show, because people do talk about that stuff irl - like "I copped the tellers before they sold out" or "these limited edition Off White Jordans are passing the fit check right?" - references to trending twitter topics both political and apolitical would make the whole thing more believable...they need gen z writers in the writer's rooms!!
Lol "just got used to it" is the most accurate description for why I watched it as well. Every week I thought maybe I was just remembering it wrong and it would be better
I just feel like shows these days are trying so desperately hard to have their Clueless, the nanny, mean girls iconic fashion moments and are failing miserably. This show and the looks just seem so uninspired and predictable. Not even a throuple with fine ass Evan Mock can keep me interested in this show 🥱 Elite season 1 wants it storyline back.
I haven't watched elite so idk if the plot line is a threesome or a poly relationship? I think (hope) that GG is going for a poly relationship which is honestly the only plotline I care for
i looove these costume reviews videos! there's a spanish show on netflix called valeria and i think you'd have fun reviewing the styling choices aswell
I look forward to all your style review videos!! I never realized how much the clothing in a show/movie helps tell a story until I started watching your videos! Especially in regards to Zoya in this instance with the revolution books store bag and the reusing of items. it shows the stylists really went above and beyond to make this characters really represent where they come from.
I think my biggest issue isn't even the fashion choices because I did NOT see what they were wearing!!! In the original the clothes were in the shot all the time, lighting was good and I could see what everyone is wearing!! Here it's either dark or the camera didn't focus on clothes much
As someone with hearing impairment and not a native, I wanted to drop by and say thank you for keeping the subtitles going in most videos, I know words but but most complex ones I never get to hear so I have no idea how they're pronounced so yeah... lots of love ♡
whenever I watch the show I try not to think they’re in the 14 - 17 age range because it feels so weird seeing the sexual scenes, they don’t even look or feel like teens… I also wish we’d see more of Monet and Luna because they seem to have the fashion down (being the best dressed) and (at this point) the most interesting as they haven’t utilized their characters
Can we talk about how it’s impossible to accurately portray teens in mainstream media because all writers/producers/directors are working adults ????i feel bad for EVERYONE involved here
I just wanna stop and say THANK YOU FOR SUBTITLES!!! I know it must take so much work to go through and write out everything you say again, but it makes such a big difference in comparison to the auto generated ones. Xoxoxo, your adoring fans
i honestly don't have a big interest in fashion but i really love your channel! i think it's probably because of the way you captivate me and your prestance. just wanted to say i enjoy your content and i like you a lot!
Maybe is me or the fashion trends in Europe, but the "they seem a little bit to old for being teenagers" is something that I see reflected in today's society...(?) The younger generations have access to all of this fast fashion clothes that make a 14 yo look like they are already in their 20's. And I'm saying this as someone who's in their 20's. It's kinda weird. It seems that there's no nuanced progression from "kids" clothes to "adult" ones, I don't know how to explain. It's probably just a trend, but it has gone on for a while now
I completely agree with everything. I thought the writing was pretty lazy at times. After 6 episodes I still don’t really know why this show exists because nothing really happened? All in all I thought it was quite shallow which is sad because there’s so much potential. But the dialogue was also tone deaf at times. 💔
Original Gossip Girl's costumes get a ton of well deserved praise but the props and sets teams deserve god damn nobel prizes for their contributions to our world. Blair's apartment with the checkerboard floors and the giant Marie Antionette mural??? the flower arragnements in every episode??? Lily VDW and Chuck's Richard Phillips paintings????? literally some of the most iconic sets like you cannot see spectrum by richard phillips and not think of the show.
SPOTTED: Mina seems to have fashioned up a costume review. Will the designs get the re-boot? Or will she give a little Le-way to a new take on a cult classic? Watch and see for yourself…

Good point!

Honestly it kinda felt realistic how some of the blandest nepo kids become influencers, I don’t think it was intentional though 😶
@@susanalopez5052 actually this is such a good point…since when are 75% of influencers interesting people?
What behaviors in particular do you mean?

Also sorry if I worded that wrong
Ikr like I can’t even watch the new season of elite its way too much

The whole thing about the teachers being behind gossip girl just made me not watch the show. In the age of social media there were so many interesting ways they could have done it but chose the most garbage way to do so.
Same for me, I actually just got into the original series because my friend is obsessed with it and was a bit excited about the reboot until I heard about that plot point. It's just so stupid, most of my teachers wouldn't even agree to my friend request on social media until I graduated high school and I'm expected to believe these teachers who live in the city that never sleeps have nothing better to do with their time than stalk and bully their students?

i don't think they're actually framed as hero's lol but yeah the teachers are gross :(
I disagree about the social justice elements in the show not being used for woke points, to me it all felt very performative, like when Obie was at the protest. That whole protest ended up just being used as a backdrop for their stupid love triangle drama, and it ended with Obie and Julien kissing while people were running around getting tear-gassed. I don't think this show tackles any of the actual issues in a meaningful way.
YES. THANK YOU that whole part did not sit right with me
I think they know that though.
YES THAT WAS SO UNNECESSARY
YES! there is no way for a show about rich ppl to actually be “socially conscious”

Teacher/ Student relationships in teen shows need to be abolished!
Absolutely! Especially the romanticism of them like in PLL with Aria
On the bright side the show isn’t portraying it as romantic that’s a huge step in terms of these types of relationships in teen shows
Preach, they creep me out more than anything, but at least both this show and "Cruel Summer" explicitly pointed out that the teacher was grooming their student from the get go, and were blatantly using their position to take advantage of a minor.
@@trinaq cruel summer I haven’t seen anyone talk about to and there is so many important things in there!

EXACTLY! I WANT COLOUR
heads up - fate the wix saga has changed a bit of its production team and are working on stuff the fans wanted to see
s2 is actually looking hopeful now
i think thats because they use older designers and dont take any inspiration from young celebrities
Like Julien's fanny pack, if they were popular at the time of production or filming of the show and then fell out of fashion by the time the show aired that's no fault of the show.
i’m pissed that they got thr other teacher fired because she was the nicest teacher to be honest

It bothered me as well that she was fired but knowing how karma works, being fired is better than what the teachers doing all this stuff will get.
I think what bothers me about the show is that it doesn't meaningfully engage with class, which is a topic I think a lot of this generation are conscious about. ( i’m not poly so if i’m overstepping please let me know) but it makes it seem like these relationships are something sexy and hot when the characters have weak communication imo and aren’t as responsible as it seems needed in these kind of relationships. I feel like the new show is just trying to play it more of the euphoria route of trying to mix darker and serious stuff along with the fun dumb stuff, but is just not pulling it off.
It feels too polished and sterile. It needs to have more fun with itself and do some cringey and fun stuff.

i liked that they made actual Instagram accounts for the characters . even tho the show was so unrealistic it was kinda good that they did something real.
I NEED Mina to make a costume review of It's Okay To Not Be Okay kdrama. Plssssss. I'm sure she would love every single Ko Moon Young outfit.

It just doesn’t make sense for these supposed trend setters to be outdated in 2020 or 2019 whenever it was filmed
it’s true !! but all the outfits are a crap :(
@@pixiedust0003 yeah I know what you mean.
Yes and in the OG they used mature style too, I feel like thats the point of Gossip Girl - teens acting like adults.

But having that style for him already seems too soon.
who else has been waiting for mina to do a vid on this?? she’s the best 🥺
IKR it was so nice to for a change have a bad guy nerd
Audrey said that school sucks in Dumbo Hall when Zoya said to focus on that when trying to convince her mom not to leave the city. Monet might be the most academically strong since she mentioned doing the entire pr thing for Julien to get an elite marketing internship the next summer.
Yeah I would liked something about academics, but there’s no academic stakes or talk about school or college. Maybe it’s because the kids are rich and don’t have to worry? I think even mentioning academic pressure would have been nice
@@judey_moony Honestly teen dramas need to focus on that. It could honestly be a really good conflict.
@Sophie That’s very true!
I actually tried watching the show and I couldn't even get past the first episode... This kind of show doesn't slap the way they think it do...
Yeah like influencers in their 20s not like millenials/ middle aged women😭
Mina goes into detail about this in her “the problem about teen dramas” video!
It would have been more believable if they made the new gossip girl (the character) a student attempting to copycat the OG
Regina's son was just RIGHT THERE
Tbf the og characters were also styled older than the characters age compared to what the viewers were wearing.
Your mental organization and the way this video is executed brings me peace, the way you speak & the way you display your ideas with the viewers is amazing
Yeah every episode i had the thought ' they seem more like trend followers than setters' which seemed opposite for the original show!
The season isn’t over yet though, this was a mid season finale
omg tu también ves este canal? jajajaja hi bbgurl
In OG GG every frame looked like a breathtaking fashion editorial. Based on what we've seen so far, I cannot say I find it likely to get such moments
But substance is more important than visual, and let's be real, it's not like OG GG makes a lot of sense after s1
i think they should've had some emma chamberlain inspo, and maybe have other characters in the background wear styles that julian had worn before (to show that she is setting trends)
i love, love, LOVE watchin ur vids, its soo chill, i love ur style, ilyy fr
I think (hope) that GG is going for a poly relationship which is honestly the only plotline I care for
@@tvddamonlovernina They have a threesome storyline in Elite. The interesting thing about Elite though is the murder/mystery aspect of it
@@lightangel452 aaaahhh got it
@@tvddamonlovernina they have both actually with different ppl
right even mock so fine but even him being in the snow isn’t keeping me interested anymore
As a future teacher I can't express how uncomfortable I am with the romanticizing of the student- teacher relationship 😫😫😫
i looove these costume reviews videos! there's a spanish show on netflix called valeria and i think you'd have fun reviewing the styling choices aswell
mina looking all that pretty and glowing after a roadtrip with her friends is what i want in my life 💅
I look forward to all your style review videos!!
Loving the headband! Thank u for the video 💞
whenever I watch the show I try not to think they’re in the 14 - 17 age range because it feels so weird seeing the sexual scenes, they don’t even look or feel like teens… I also wish we’d see more of Monet and Luna because they seem to have the fashion down (being the best dressed) and (at this point) the most interesting as they haven’t utilized their characters
The 1D joke was so random I just started laughing out of nowhere
Can we talk about how it’s impossible to accurately portray teens in mainstream media because all writers/producers/directors are working adults ????i feel bad for EVERYONE involved here
Will forever love Blair´s style. ICONIC. 🖤
I just feel like the writers need to understand that teenagers do not speak the way they do on social media.
your videos and expertise are so amazing they fill the void of my soul thank you
so glad you uploaded today! i've been having a bad day so I really needed this
Hope you feel better ❤️
Aww well I hope your day gets better and whatever is going on it you’re going through, I hope it all works out. And I’m cheering for you!🥰
Take care love 💗
“new york pigeons” 😭
the pearl headband ✨
i really needed this video right now... thank u so much mina!! ur the best :(
Side note: Mina! This shirt is everything. I live for that sleeve!
I can’t tell u how much I needed this video right now ahjaja instant mood boost
it would be so cool if u reviewed the fashion from the original show!!!
Mina: I couldn’t get through the whole first season of the original.
Me: *Collects my things and exits the chat*
I just wanna stop and say THANK YOU FOR SUBTITLES!!! I know it must take so much work to go through and write out everything you say again, but it makes such a big difference in comparison to the auto generated ones. Xoxoxo, your adoring fans
Thank you Mina, for reminding me that I’m a ✨beautiful New York Pigeon ✨. I almost forgot
I personally really love Julian’s wardrobe that I went on eBay and bought a vintage Tommy Hilfiger varsity jacket. 😌
Ok but i don’t think you realize how influential 1st gossip G was in fashion. It was crazy
i honestly don't have a big interest in fashion but i really love your channel! i think it's probably because of the way you captivate me and your prestance. just wanted to say i enjoy your content and i like you a lot!
YOU LOOK SO GOODD OMG😍
Original Gossip Girl's costumes get a ton of well deserved praise but the props and sets teams deserve god damn nobel prizes for their contributions to our world. Blair's apartment with the checkerboard floors and the giant Marie Antionette mural??? the flower arragnements in every episode??? Lily VDW and Chuck's Richard Phillips paintings????? literally some of the most iconic sets like you cannot see spectrum by richard phillips and not think of the show.
ma'am i have been WAITING for this
i watch it for aki… and that’s absolutely it. evan mock saved this show for me because he’s 💖
there’s something very valid about watching shows for the pretty men that just stand there and look good
