In all fairness you don't see too many multi millionaires or billionaires putting their life at risk by doing some of the things Vince has. It's probably the thing that keeps me from hating him to his core. Like Vince will let you kick him in the nuts and vomit on him and just utterly humiliate him if he thought it was good TV
The trouble is Vince has NO SHAME and kinda set the standard by the doing the most outrageous things on TV. Vince also stated that this is Wrestling ENTERTAINMENT and soap operas and sitcoms dominated the 90s (i.e. F.R.I.E.N.D.S.) so the drama was a big part of the storylines. Vince putting his family out there as this dysfunctional family was a big move for him since most people respect their privacy, also Vince openly having an affair and making real life situations into a plot in a story showed this man had no lines drawn. He even used Macho Man's troubled relationship with Miss Elizabeth to fuel the feud with Hulk Hogan which turned into a real fight (life imitating art and art imitating life). Socially engineering situations for wrestlers to be in for "authenticity" he's by no means a saint and there's a reason why JR calls him the Devil. He'll do anything to get to the top even sell his soul but without this man...we wouldn't have had a childhood xD Crazy to think.
There will never be a wrestling villain like Vince McMahon. Say all you want about his creative in recent years, but when he was at the peak over 20 years ago, it was must watch TV.
I honestly think.. he just let the wrestlers do what they wanted... DX... hardy Boyz etc... now and days they can't do anything to crazy because of the tv deals and stuff... but I loved the attitude era where they did anything.. men hit women... heck they even blew Vince up in a car on tv lol can't do that today

*Love him or hate him, Vince always made such a great bad guy. He was just way too entertaining the hate. Even despite his character being a horrible dictator, he was always willing to receive his comeuppance and had no problem making a fool out of himself for the fans entertainment unlike his daughter Stephanie McMahon during god-awful The Authority era.*

Not just WWE but mainstream professional wrestling or even sports entertainment in general. I'm willing to bet a lot of folks here won't even know jack s**t about wrestling if it wasn't for Vince.
I think one reason why the "Mr McMahon" character resonates so much with the audiences is easy: it's somewhat rooted in reality. Almost anyone has had a power tripping superior that they would want to vent their frustrations on, which is exactly why the audience rallied behind Austin's rebel character. Mr McMahon embodies all the worst traits of the bad boss trope, and ran with it. The irony is that the Stone Cold character is actually closer to Vince's own real life persona than the Mr McMahon character he plays on TV. No joke, McMahon was not afraid to challenge the norms, and if anyone has a problem with that, he will just tell them to deal with it (the middle finger gesture embodies this attitude), with has both good and bad consequences. It's part of the reason why Vince's legacy is so complicated even till today.
Watching this I remember watching Monday night raw late 90s until mid 2000. It always amazed me how it never got boring . It wasn't censored like todays raw. Vince was a big part on that. Two reasons 1-They pushed him. He was always doing something to try to get more heat 2-They didn't kill his heat by having him face justice too many times.
