- This is a spotlight on the Keyhole Cichlid (Cleithracara Maronii). We walk through the background on these cichlids, as well as a care guide.
Temperament and size is what primarily sets this species aside from other cichlids. They are relatively peaceful and timid (at times), but they are a great option for most fish keepers.

Thanks again for watching! Животные
I have bought my pair of Keyholes almost as an after thought when I was getting something else and after a few months, they have become my absolute favourite fish. They aren't shy at all. They swim all over the tank, lazily grazing on bits of food on plants and the substrate. Super docile. I might just dedicate the whole tank to them. 10/10 for fishness! 😁👍🏻
Awesome, sounds great! They’re an underrated cichlid, especially if you prefer the more peaceful species!
Awesome fish. Currently keeping 6 on my 75 gallon aquarium 👍🏼‼️
Awesome
Keyhole Cichlids are the heartiest fish I've ever kept. I had a disease hit my community tank and tried raising heat and multiple medications but EVERYTHING died, everything.... Bolivian Rams, Congo Tetra's, Endlers, Headlight & Lemon Tetra's, Emperor Tetra's... EVERYTHING except for my Keyhole Cichlid, he was the sole survivor out of some 40 fish. Came out totally unscathed and for a couple weeks I didn't even see him they're so good at hiding I figured I'd start tearing down the tank then I found him alive and healthy.
Very helpful and informative. Good photography!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the info and really pretty fish
Cichlid Guru of course, and thank you!
Discovered your channel and I’m lovin it!
Fishdreamz thanks so much!
great video
Great video & info as usual! I have 3 Keyholes with a Severum, Angel, and bristlenose pleco. The Keyholes buddied-up with the Severum and the four of them hang pretty tight. By far the most peaceful grouping/tank of cichlids I've ever kept...
J S thank you! And very nice, love that stocking and setup
I love when different varieties of fish become friends! It’s awesome!
What size is your tank please.
Well done!
Tom Lee thanks!
very cool cichlid for sure !!
David's Fish Tanks agreed!
I miss mine yours look awesome great job your doing with these thumbs up👍🏿👍🏿
Appreciate it!
Interesting video.
I have a Dwarf Cichlid aquarium (with other small Cichlids that are not classed as Dwarf), one is a Convict, I only got it yesterday but so far it seems to get along with everything. 🇬🇧
Very nice
Nice dude
I have a pair and I love them more than any others in my tank. They are very skittish though.
My 75 had angelfish and keyholes. It was very awesome
Great setup!
I have the same in my 45
I Keep keyhole ciklids together with blue acaras and i am so pleased. It works very well.🐟
Very nice!
Cool cichlids

Very cool fish! Rams can be testy.
Agreed!
Cool little dudes bros .....our fish and turtles have never been so happy with us being locked up with them hahahaha.....they are getting so much more attention and loving it....thanks for sharing and be well guys....
Jack and Dan thanks guys! The fish are making things much easier to be home so much
Great fish...! I loved mine.
They have the typical cichlid habits - always investigating everything: give them things to enrich that nature: pieces of rock, wood, etc. Create caves, overhangs... as much variety as possible. You will be rewarded with a happy, active, and ever-curious fish. Without these elements, this fishes slightly shy nature can make them a bit reclusive?
There certainly are more flashy cichlids out there: but few match the laid-back nature and relative hardiness of the keyhole (and the keyhole is still an attractive fish: just a bit more subtle)...
As a centrepiece alongside a shoal of tetras, etc... very pleasing...
They are seriously docile, in cichlid terms. Even spawning aggression should not be a problem - unless the tank is too small or too crowded.
Tankmates: nothing to big and boisterous because the keyhole won't fare well with such competition...
...and nothing so small that it will fit in its mouth. It isn't that the keyhole is aggressive: it is simply a fact that ALL fish will we'll try and eat anything they can fit in their mouth (One of my own disasters from decades ago was putting a large shoal of Cardinal Tetras in a large tank with an established group of Boeseman's Rainbows. The Rainbows were barely big enough to get a cardinal in their mouth without a struggle... But they did!!! The introduction was just treated as a live food treat 😢 (lesson learnt)
Keyholes aren't big substate diggers, and are largely plant friendly, so you can have a pretty, well planted tank if you want...
Oh... and they live for a long time! 10 years is not uncommon: They certainly have the potential to outlive a pedigree dog 😮
A great little fish 🙂
Great info! I have been eyeballing these for awhile now. I was looking for a less aggressive cichlid for my fish cave the search is over. You and your brothers stay safe. Wipe everything down coming from the outside world before taking it in doors and I mean everything!! The mail, food from the store, pack of smokes, soup can, cell phone, money from the bank, case of beer and even frozen peas. You get the point. Wipe the shit out of your cars to, steering wheel, gear shift, all the surfaces every time you bring something new into the car. The wife and I have set up a small table on front porch everything gets cleaned or thrown away before taking items into our house. Luck favors the prepared! It's not the hand shake that gets ya. It's the door handle at the gas station or your favorite cereal box you just dragged in the house.
Thanks so much! And that's some great advice. Stay safe and healthy out there!
Love these! Setting up a 40 gallon breeder tank with driftwood and live plants. Do you have stocking recommendations that would include the keyhole cichlids and other community fish? How many of each???
Guppies, tetras, some barbs, corys, peaceful stuff. The only cichlid I would keep with them is maybe a festum.
Great video! Quick question, what’s that yellow fish with black stripes in the background at 2:48? And that white fish at 3:10
The white one is a geophagus species
Did this combination work out well longer-term? Like the contrast between the Electric Blue Acara & the Harlequins but wasn’t sure if they’d be too small to keep with an EBA over time.
I'm done with agressive cichlids and am looking to go a calmer route. Would these go well with rainbow cichlids in a planted tank? I know that rainbows like harder water.
Finally getting my Keyhole aquarium together! Would 3 keyholes be ok. Just wonder what happens to the 3rd if a pair start to breed? I see you have harlequins with them in your vid. Do you think Cherry barbs would be ok. Similar size. Thanks for any info you are able to provide.
Very nice! I think they’ll do just fine in that setup. They’re very peaceful so I wouldn’t see any issues there
Great fish buddy !
Can a pair of rams coexist with them in a 65 gallon ? Very well hardscaped, including plants and some other peaceful dither fish.
Thank you!
Yes, I think they would go very well together
@@CichlidBros that is great ! I first saw that fish in your video, seems like it has a very interesting behavior
I would say if you have big keyholes you can basically have them with any Cichlid from south and Central America as long as they not can swallow the keyhole. I have mine with Vieja synapilum and oscars
Nike Nikesson yep, I think I can definitely be done, particularly with experienced fish keepers. Thanks for watching!
Hello, how do they get aong with electric blue acaras? i would like to keep them together.
Try pikes! Super personal!
congo tetra and cardinal tetra with some of this cichlide wil be great ? (in a 64 gallons)
That should work well!
Keyholes can go wel with discus, too.
Agreed!
Hi! I have two questions, the first being, can i keep them singular, or do they need a group? Im trying to prevent breeding aggression, since im keeping them in a community tank. However, im fully up to getting a pair if they arent that aggressive. The other issue however is getting the right sex. Which leads me to my second question, If i get two of the same gender will it be ok? Thanks!
Do you think they can be kept with nano animals such as shrimp or pygmy corys?
It might work in some cases, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Even though keyholes are peaceful they still might see them as snacks
Do keyholes pair up when they are still relatively young?
The earliest I have seen is around 1 year old, but I suppose it’s possible earlier
When I can find them, at least 2 will go into my 40 breeder community planted tank.
Very nice
What is the striped fish in the tank?
Fishdreamz it’s a cichlasoma bimaculatum (black acara)
Will they do well with Electric Blue Acara?
Guess maybe not.
Likely will do fine as tank mates
Could you keep a group of keyholes with a chocolate/emerald cichlid??
It can sometimes work, but depends on the chocolate which can be hit or miss with aggression. If you have an adult keyhole and a younger chocolate, you’ll have better chances of success
@@CichlidBros Thank you so much! I'll let my keyholes get comfortable and grow before adding the juvenile chocolate. ☺
@@leslierotter8109 Good strategy!
I’m holding off for at least another year before adding a chocolate cichlid (hard to do as it will be my centerpiece fish for obvious reasons) so my baby angles, keyholes, Acaras and Geos can grow!
Can only 1 keyhole be kept by it self or does it have to be in a group or pair?
It could be kept solo or in a community
@@CichlidBros can it be kept with blood parrot?
Keyholes are not aggressive, you can keep them with guppies, neons, all sorts of peaceful fish. Give them lots of places to hide because they will get stressed out even if people are just walking by the tank.
Yep, agree with all of this
Do you think I could keep a group of 4 or 3 in a 55 gallon
The current stock is 3 New Guinea rainbowfish, 3 boesmani rainbowfish, 3 yellow rainbowfish, 1 Australian rainbowfish, 8 corydoras, a panda garra, Bristlenose pleco and beta
Narrates below 5 ammonia 0 nitrites 0
I’m just worried about aggressive behavior
Can they go with rainbow cichlids
Yep
Is that white fish a geophagus?
Jason my Jack Dempsey he did not eat anything ???
