    Thank you for the great video! Not to put anybody else down, but this is by far the best Kribensis video I've found on youtube. I would love to have a pair and watch them take their kids on a field trip around the tank like this, but the only thing holding me back is the fear that I wouldn't be able to re-home the fry once they've grown. Absolutely gorgeous fish, and I think they're gonna win out over an Apistogramma which I've also been eyeballing. Again, thanks for the nice footage AND the great info.

      Maybe if you talk to your local fish store you could as them if they'd be willing to take potential babies to give you confidence to give them a go. It certainly is very rewarding keeping these interesting guys.

    G'day Daniel, this is one of my all time favorite fish, I just got a new pair recently after not having kept them in about 10 years, and I'm in love again. They're on their second spawning attempt right now. I think the male effed up and ate the babies last time, and she tried to kill him for it. I made a few vids on them, and plan on doing a species profile as well...you should drop by and have squiz if you have some free time (sorry about the shameless self promotion, but you might enjoy these). This time all is going well, they haven't come out of the cave yet, but I have seen wiggly tails. Not long until the first batch from the new pair I think. Really awesome species profile, on a really awesome little African Cichlid 👍

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  2 года назад +1

      Honestly I doubt it. I've kept them together and had the Kribs breeding no problem. I don't find they bother Kribs or intimidate them to the point they are uncomfortable to breed.
      Assuming you definitely have one of each sex and water conditions around the preferred range feed them well and try providing a few different options for breeding sites; a cave, a flat rock and perhaps even a couple of broad leaves such as Indian Almond leaves if you can. Hopefully they'll breed for you soon. 🤞

  • @1domcouk
    @1domcouk 4 года назад +4

    Will a male and female Krib automatically pair up or do you need to get a group and then wait for a pair to form?

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  4 года назад +3

      No there is no guarantee that a single male and a single female will pair up. If you're wanting that to happen it is best to get a single female and several males for her to choose which of them will become her mate.

  • @1domcouk
    @1domcouk 3 года назад +1

    Just wondering, if Kribs are such prolific breeders what do you do with all the fry? Do you have a fish that naturally eats the fry and keeps numbers down? Cheers

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  3 года назад

      That's one solution. Otherwise you can five the offspring to fellow fish keepers nearby, sell them if you're able and willing to have strangers visit or to mail them or trade them in at a local fish store. 👍

  • @Fluffaloo
    @Fluffaloo 2 года назад +1

    I was wondering if you think these kribensis would do ok in my tank. I have a 125 gal with a planned set up of 1 blue gourami, 1 opaline gourami, 1 paradise gourami, 1 gold gourami, 1 african leaf fish/gourami, sailfin pleco, 3 juvenile clown loaches, and 1 pearl gourami. The gouramis I have currently are more semi-aggressive than peaceful but I was curious to see if I would be able to add a kribensis. That being said, are they ok alone or do they prefer pairs/community?

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  2 года назад +1

      You like your Gourami hey. No wonder too, they're wonderful fish.
      Kribensis are usually fine in planted community tanks. They tend to use the bottom of the tank more so wouldn't really bother your Gourami too much and I don't see your other fish minding them.
      The only problem is if they start trying to breed, they get very territorial. I've see all other fish trying to keep out of their way when that's happening including Gourami, Angelfish and just about everything else.
      You could keep a few of the same sex to avoid that or set them up with a spawning site at one end of the tank, hope they use it and let the other fish keep to the other end for a few days. They tend to chase other fish away rather than actually damage them but they can intimidate the other fish whilst trying to keep them away from their fry.

    • @Fluffaloo
      @Fluffaloo 2 года назад

      @@DanielKeepingFish Yes I do love my gourami and thank you that helps a lot! I appreciate the detailed reply :) In this case, I think I will try to add a couple female Kribensis. The majority of my tank is female anyway I guess I will stick with that pattern lol.

      Wow. I was just trying to get some video there to try to put a shrimp tank update that you asked about together.
      Do you mean the orange and green ones? It was Rust-oleum Peelable spray paint from B&Q. You can see the can at 2:28 in this video:
      ruclips.net/video/OEG0wVIZzm4/видео.html
      The green was lime green. I can't remember what the orange was called but I could take a trip up to find out if you really need to know the exact shade. I think there was only one orange though.

      @@highlandsgirl3920 I've never had any bother with it. I know folk in the US use Plasti-dip but not sure if that's even a thing over here.
      Acrylic paint is usually fine too. Just don't get any inside the tank.

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  3 года назад +1

      Honestly I think that's a myth about Kribensis being comfortable in brackish water so I'd say probably not. Also, I've never kept F8s but I understand they can be quite aggressive so I don't think they'd make idea tankmates.
      I'm sorry that's probably not what you were wanting to hear but I really don't think it's ideal.

    I got a pair of these alone in a 10g. The male seems to be bullying the female, and chasing her down when she is in site. Is this pre-courtship behaviour, or a problem

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  3 года назад

      Could be either bud, aggression or him wanting to engage in breeding behaviour and she's not interested. Make sure you have plants and/or scape to break the line of sight and if possible a couple of cave. They'll use them to relax in and hopefully as somewhere to breed eventually.

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  4 года назад +2

      You can keep a single Kribensis sure. Single Kribs are a great addition to community tanks.
      Whether you keep a male or female is generally down to personal choice. Females tend to be more colourful where males tend to be a bit larger than females with a bit more colour and pattern on their caudal fin.
      Either will be equal in terms of behaviour in the tank when kept singularly.
      They're a really nice fish. You'll enjoy whichever you choose I'm sure.

    would a apisto pair and a kribensis pair go togther in a 75

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  2 года назад +1

      Generally Kribs and Pistos don't get on too well together but there's always exceptions in our hobby and there's quite a bit of room in a 75 for each to have their territory. It may work but then there might be issues when ever pair starts breeding.
      If you have a back up plan for if it doesn't go well you could give it a go.

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  3 года назад

      Generally I find them great community fish. It's just when they start breeding they get super territorial. I don't know if yours have bred yet. If so and they have remained accepting of their tank mates that's really cool. They all have their own personalities and if you've found some super chill ones that is very lucky as you say, well done. If not you might find their change in behaviour sudden and interesting.
      I love the albinos by the way. They were very popular a few years back but you don't see them quite as much any more.

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  4 года назад +1

      It's true, they can be fiercely territorial when breeding but it's rewarding watching them too.
      Sometimes breeder hold out on one of the sexes but often big box stores are not quite as particular. I know some people prefer to avoid those stores but I think they are they same as independent businesses, some are good, some not so much. As long as you quarantine any fish you get properly...
      Also if you join local groups either in your community or online you'll soon get to know who has Kribs and might be able to help you out.
