I'm from the UK and was on holiday in New York in 2014. My sister and I got split up by mistake on the Underground. The ONLY person who helped me, was a wonderful elderly Jewish man. He even used his day ticket for me to board the correct train to get back to my sister. He was so kind. The brain is very much a question of "use it or lose" it and some days the younger generation (yawn yawn, yes I know) show me that they have already lost it. I am so grateful for the quality education (state education all the way, not private) that taught me how to concentrate for longer than 30 seconds, to learn so much Shakespeare and other poetry by heart (not to mention the X tables and history dates and capital cities LOL), to analyse and debate without screaming at the adversary and last but not least to entertain myself and develop my imagination and creativity without endless hours of television. She said, what do you expect from a curriculum that only demands three years of history classes and two of them are only US history. In her junior year she had a class called world cultures and regions, that means world history and geography squeezed into one year. I guess the teacher didn't have "time" to go over the horrendous atrocities of the 20th century. To me that would have been more important than learning the names of the six wives of Henry VIII for example. When it came to the Holocaust she educated herself by reading many books. @vanessagray8604 It IS disgusting and as an ex teacher who got out long before the rise of wokeism, I think part of this complex problem of dumbing down is due to the wrong use of internet and smart phone which can reduce many to the concentration span of a gnat. The brain is very much a question of "use it or lose" it and some days the younger generation (yawn yawn, yes I know) show me that they have already lost it. I am so grateful for the quality education (state education all the way, not private) that taught me how to concentrate for longer than 30 seconds, to learn so much Shakespeare and other poetry by heart (not to mention the X tables and history dates and capital cities LOL), to analyse and debate without screaming at the adversary and last but not least to entertain myself and develop my imagination and creativity without endless hours of television. our daughter who is in her thirties told us the other day that she had never heard of Mao Tse Tung in any history class in her school days. We were both shocked! She said, what do you expect from a curriculum that only demands three years of history classes and two of them are only US history. In her junior year she had a class called world cultures and regions, that means world history and geography squeezed into one year. I guess the teacher didn't have "time" to go over the horrendous atrocities of the 20th century. To me that would have been more important than learning the names of the six wives of Henry VIII for example. When it came to the Holocaust she educated herself by reading many books. So it's not like the young people forgot what they learned - they never learned it to begin with. Deplorable!
