Hi! Thank you for the information. I am a US-IMG and am really interested to go into Diagnostic Radiology. My question is that if I want to do a transitional year first and then go for DR, Should I apply for only Transitional year programs in match 2024 and DR Programs in match 2025?
So, if you match into a transitional year and haven't simoltaneously matched in an advanced program for next year, you would have to apply for match next year again?
Yes, you're correct! In the following year you can either apply for Advanced or Physician R programs (which start in the year of the Match), or you can apply for a categorical specialty and repeat your PGY1.
great video. i was wondering if doing a transitional year residency this year boosts the chance of matching in to residency of my choice on the next match year.....*planing to enter the match again next year and already secured a transitional year residency* thanks in advance
What about clinical genetics, they ask 1 or 2 years before entering the 2 years advanced program. Or clinical genetics is considered a fellowship? I think not.
Medical Genetics and Genomics is a fellowship: services.aamc.org/eras/erasstats/par/display.cfm?NAV_ROW=PAR&SPEC_CD=130 While Internal Medicine/Medical Genetics and Pediatrics/Medical Genetics are residency training tracks: services.aamc.org/eras/erasstats/par/index.cfm
Thanks for the informative video. I'm interested in neurology. Can I apply to both preliminary and transitional year to increase my chances of matching? In case I match into a transitional year, will I be able to join an advanced neurology programs? The reason I'm asking is because I'm not sure if there are requirements for the number of weeks spent in internal medicine during internship for neurology residency. Thanks
You can apply to categorical neurology programs as well as preliminary IM programs combined with applications to Advanced neurology programs. We suggest contacting the ACGME regarding whether or not Transitional Year programs offer a path to Advanced Neurology tracks: accreditation@acgme.org
Since EM is not an Advanced Training program that requires a PGY1 before beginning, it is very likely that you would need to repeat the PGY1 unless somehow you are able to Match directly into a PGY2 position. You may wish to call EM programs to find out how they would deal with situations like this.
Hi! Thank you for the information. I am a NON-US IMG, I have completed my bachelors degree in medicine and surgery and Masters of surgery in orthopaedics from India. I am currently a 3rd year senior resident at department of orthopedics. I have one research publication. Step1- pass, step 2- 243. Which programs should i go for? Would applying to orthopedic residency be foolish?
I want to match into general surgery and then afterwards i want to go to cardiothoracic surgery. So in my case, should i plan to join a preliminary general surgery residency or a categorical general surgery residency?
Preliminary Surgery is not enough to then begin CTS. You have to match into general surgery first. For more detailed pathways, you can visit: tsda.org/the-tsda/ct-residency-programs/ct-surgery-training-pathways/
Hi, thanks for the informative video. Can people who are applying for a Categorical IM program apply for preliminary programs as back up? I'd rather do a prelim IM program than go unmatched. Please let me know what you think.
First of all thank you madam for making such informative video .. Madam may u rply in your free time 😊 that Is resident in preliminary or transition year get paid??if yes then how much?? & If someone did completed their internal medicine from foreign country & they want to persue cardiology fellowship in usa, will they have to repeat the residency again???
Yes, you do get paid for these residency positions. You can look up individual programs for that information! Yes, you do have to do residency training in the US in order to practice medicine, regardless of your previous overseas experience.
Im a non us img, I have 2 questions. Although I'm extremely interested in neurosurgery. Im targeting Gen. Surgery(as i know its impossible to match) & from that can i get into NS program? Also what exactly one has to do to become a trauma surgeon? Im just starting medical school so if you can help me clear the facts it will be extremely helpful:) Also great vid❤️
It is possible to get from GS to NS. However, this is best accomplished if you Match into a program which offers both training. That way, you may be able to easily switch to the other residency track based on your elite performance in GS. However, switching to an entirely different hospital from GS to NS as a non-US IMG may be very difficult. For trauma surgery, "Trauma surgeons generally complete residency training in General Surgery and often fellowship training in trauma or surgical critical care." If you are applying to advanced programs, you can apply to both your prelim/TY program and advanced program during the same Match.

Are transitional year residencies as demanding in terms of hours worked per week as categorical programs? Thanks
Generally speaking, yes, transitional years tend to be less demanding in terms of hours per week on average compared to other categorical programs.
This helpeddd
Wonderful!!

Yes, it is common for applicants to apply for both in the same year. We hope you Match into your Categorical of choice!
Non US IMG applying for categorical Neurosurgery program should apply for preliminary general surgery year ??
You can definitely do that to strengthen your chances of Matching and getting started on your residency journey!

Is it a good idea to apply to both categorical and prelim internal medicine in the same program? thanks
It is okay to apply to both. However, applying to only categorical - if that is your goal - may be preferable for those with both tracks.
is doing a transitional year good to get a PGY-2 in psychiatry?
I believe psychiatry is mostly categorical programs, so you'll have to see if getting a PGY-2 position is possible.
@@matcharesident sometimes Pgy2 spots are advertised
