Dear Sydney…thank you for sharing this…I am a strong believer that things happen for a reason and I am happy to say that the reason was that one year later you are one of my pediatric residents and all the experiences that you gained made you the extraordinary resident you are!
I am attending LECOM this year, and I've been watching your videos for the last year. I want to thank you for everything you've been able to provide to us, the content and the amazing yet difficult journey that is medical school. You are extremely brave and humble for sharing this video, as there are so many of us that have concerns of not matching on match day. You have been able to professionally and legitimately educate us on the whole process while going through it, and I applaud you on that. You are an incredibly smart, talented, and well rounded individual, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I am so happy to hear that you eventually got in, it must be an incredible feeling! Congratulations Dr. Sydney Shearer, you're going to be an incredible physician. Keep us updated!! We're all suppportive of you!
Hi Christopher! I will likely be attending Lecom Bradenton next year and was wondering if I could ask a little bit about your experience as an OMS-1. Is there an Instagram or some place I could contact you? It would be awesome to have the contact of an upper-class student. Thank you.
wow thank you so so so so so much!!!! you have no idea how much this means to me! You all have been so kind and so supportive!!! I will keep you updated!!
dont be scared!! it is an intense process but honestly having the right people around youwill get you through it when that day comes. I am here if you have ANY questions
Thank you for being so honest, open, and vulnerable in making and posting this video about your matching experience. You are a true inspiration of continued determination and never wavering your perseverance even as the clock still continues to tick so THANK YOU!!!!
What a lovely video! I mean, so difficult to watch, and so brave and courageous of you to go through and publish. You'll make such a great doctor! Congratulations!
Oh Sydney!! I had no idea that the match process was so....brutal! I admire you for your faith, strength and perseverance. Good things come to good people! The program is lucky to have you. Go get 'em, girl!
You will get through this. My friend and I didn’t match last year( me ortho she OB) I did a research year and she did a TY and we both matched this year! You will grow and become stronger and match next year! Good luck!
Thank you so much!!! If you dont mind- would you ask your friend if I can reach out and talk to them about what the best way to attack re entering the match as from a TY? I would so appreciate it!!
you will probably work 30 plus years in one field..... being able to make an informed decision is not bad, it is actually vital. i have been an ER doc for 20 years. enjoy this year and give everything a chance.
one more note, never give up. you are valuable and vital and take confidence into your program. lean on your family, just my two cents from years of practice.
Congrats on matching into a transitional year program! The best is yet to come! Your faithfulness and gratitude will be rewarded. You will reap what you sow! It’s not over. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Thank you for sharing your story I think is also important to also share not matching stories to know that this is a marathon and not a sprint. It takes a lot of courage to share this and I thank you for this!
I am so happy that you did finally Match with Transitional year. Thank God!! Well, better late than never... your on your way. Congrats. Are you provided any feedback from programs, not enough research, not enough publications, not enough volunteering? I read somewhere so many people went Matchless this cycle. Best of luck to you. And i agree with your other comment...Any specialty will be lucky to have you.
Thank you so much wow this was so kind! A lot of my professors and deans of my school called to talk to me and nobody understood why I truly fell through the cracks but of course my board scores could always be higher but I met minimums. The process is so confusing and nobody truly knows which makes it more frustrating
Congratulations on matching! My son just went through this year's match and SOAP, matching also into a transitional year in FL (just north of Tampa). Watching your video was a vivid replay of the entire emotional week. He's thrilled for having matched and like you will embrace it for all it is worth and try for his specialty in next year's match. It's a brutal process. What I found startling was to appreciate that without matching into a residency program, one cannot do ANYTHING medical, not temporarily, not anything at all! And, there are thousands more applying for the match each year than residency positions - that math is particularly brutal. Most who don't match seem to do a research year and try again. But, it is one bite of the apple a year with no way to practice any kind of medicine, at any level, while the process works out. Because the number of residencies are limited in many specialties, there can be quite a number of very good students who have to site idle (or do a research year) for a full-year at a time, possibly more than once. Compare that to how nursing is handled. One can start with as little as 12 weeks of training as a Nurse Assistant (often on the job training). LNP nurse, 1 year of education. RN, 2 year degree. RN/BSN is a 4 year college degree, but if you already have a 2-year RN, there are 2 year RN-to-BSN programs available. Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Nurse Anesthetist (NA) is a master's college degree, a 2 year program. A NP in most states can see patients independently and write prescriptions. A Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is a 4 year doctorate, or in some programs, a NP can do it in just 2 more years. All along the way in nursing there are 1 year or 2 year programs that can take one to the next level - most while working in the field - and nurses at all levels are always in demand. But on the MD/DO side, it is all or nothing, do or die, and only one match process per year! Best of luck on your residency. The good news is that with your 1-year program, and after passing Step 3, you are qualified to become a licensed physician and to be able to practice medicine in most states. Though it is still beneficial to get a full residency and board certification, but after 1 year one is no longer in the dead zone. BTW, where in FL are you going? My son is going to USF Morsani-Bayonet Pt in FL.
Hey Michael! Thank you so much for watching and for commenting! It’s so important to shed light on the process and I am so so sorry for your son having to go through this as well. That is actually where I will be going as well!
This is my first time seeing this channel and im only a first year med student. I am so happy you were able to ultamently match. Congratulations for you and wow you have a supportive partner and you also do amazing to support him too. Looking forward to following your story moving forward Doc (;
This video taught me so much. I’m an entering M1 going to a DO school this fall and while I heard about matching and soaping, I didn’t know about TYs and prelim years. Thanks for teaching me something, doc. You’re going to be an amazing OB 💕
Thank you for being so candid and genuine about this experience! I know it’s hard to think this way now but everything happens for a reason. I wish you and Dom all the best in the upcoming year!
At first, I was in tears but my husband matched in the SOAP so I knew all was not lost. A transitional year is a great opportunity to learn information and have experiences you would otherwise not have. You are going to make a great OB and look for all the lessons in this transitional year that will help you going forward. Peace, love, and light.
Hi Sydney! My name is Bridget and I am a 4th year medical student who is literally in the same position you were a year ago. I SOAPed in FM but I'm determined to match OBGYN next year as that is where my passion is. I would love to talk you you about your experience re-applying this past year after your done celebrating your match today of course! Thank you so much for sharing your story. It's always nice to know that we aren't alone in our struggles (:
hi Bridget!! I am so sorry i am just now going through these comments but I am still here if you need to chat or have any questions. you can always reach out to me on my instagram in a DM and i can give you my number for any questions you may have still!
I remember feeling so down too when I went through the match the first time in 2019. Thought I was going to be an OBGYN since I was 10 and then matched into IM. At first I was devastated but I knew I was in a better position than most how didn’t match. My best advice is to keep an open mind in this upcoming year. Because now three years later I matched into anesthesia and have never been happier!
You have been blessed with so many things so dont let this hiccup derail you. Everything will work out the way it needs to. I can't imagine how you feel but just know that there are strangers out here rooting for you and you have a purpose! Good luck, Girly! Sending prayers and lots of love!
Thank you for sharing this and being just so honest. Its so great to see you have a support system that could be there for you. Hope you are there ready to match OBGYN this year. May the force be with you. :)
Sydney! Your video here was inspiring!! I am a critical care nurse at a teaching hospital that has seen her fair share of students and residents come through...if it didn't require an entire chapter of a book to type out what I have to say, I'd tell you that I'd far rather have someone with your dedication and passion come through a transition year in the ICU than several of the entitled snobs I've had to interact with. I look forward to hearing more of your story and hope so much that you get OB!!!
Ok, this comment is more than one year late but I wanted to make it (Sept 2023). This is one of the most honest videos on match day/medical school I've seen. Thank you for opening yourself up to and explaining the soap process so thoroughly. I am a postbacc pre med aspiring to go into OBGYN. This whole process seems frightful. How are you doing right now? Have you matched into an OBGYN program?
hi!!! thank you so much for reaching out and I am so sorry i am just now getting back to you! how are YOU doing?? your determination for what you want to do can never be taken from you and just remember that as you continue along your journey. I just posted a new video today on updates about my life today but i am currently in pediatric residency! Please let me know if there is anything you need at all along the way, i am an open book when it comes to medical school and residency (clearly lol).
yes! I am sure you already figured this out by the time i am just now seeing this comment but so preliminary year is basically a year in the specialty you are trying to do and not all specialties offer this so for example i applied to some ob gyn pre lim years where i am basically an OB resident but you have to re apply still the next year, and a transitional year can be a year of whatever that program makes it but mostly its like internal medicine year with a bunch of electives so you can do the specialty you are trying to re apply for ... so both the pre lim and transitional year programs are just one year and you still have to go back into the match
Thank you so much for sharing 🥹 I’m so glad it all worked out for you! Please don’t give up on becoming an OBGYN , your story will help so many ❤❤ I’m so glad Dom was there for you! Support system during times like these are so critical
My fiancee did not have to soap but she feared the possibility of it. getting the news and looking into that email for match is one of the most dreadful moments in a person's life. Im sorry you had to experience this and i am extremely happy for you that managed to match after this scary experience. I've always thought it was unfair for med students to have to deal with this... 4 years of grueling and expensive education for a chance to not match because there aren't enough residency programs for everyone.
I talked about this I think In the video called rotations (I am by myself with braids and my iPad in the video) … I go through how we rank the rotation sites!!
just a general question. have you reflected on the reasons why you didnt get the match initially? was this common for people on lecom, etc. youve been very open and just wanted to know if there were some broad lessons speaking with other friends in the program. thank you for talking about lecom specifically
hi! yes i think its an uphill battle always when coming from any DO school and trying to apply to competitive specialties so i think that was hard (but i do not regret choosing lecom) and then i also wasnt the most competitive applicant when it came to my step one score, i think it needed to be much higher than it was and now of course they do not even have a score for USMLE step one... but things happen for a reason i guess
Hi Sydney! Thank you for sharing your experience. Although it had been tough for you to go through this experience but your experience told us that we are not alone in this and therefore, a big thank you for sharing this. I just matched into transition year residency but without getting into radiation oncology or Internal medicine ( both pathways lead to treating cancer through heme onc fellowship). I have a dumb question, being a Transition year resident, do you think if it’s possible to match into a PGY1 Internal Medicine spot? Thank you
ABSOLUTELY!!!!!! yes yes yes absolutely possible! i have many friends from my TY year that matched into their number 1 IM programs after not initially wanting IM. you can do this and I am praying for you this year in march!
Why was your school not helpful during this process? That really sucks. Thank you for sharing your story, I'm an M1 interested in OBGYN or IM. Best of luck with residency
I'm sorry you didn't match and had to SOAP. Just out of curiosity, were you at USF? If so, this seems to be a pretty consistent trend and problem with USF for the past several years since we're seeing tons of people having to SOAP each year. I just watched the match ceremony and it seems like about 10-15% of the class is SOAPing, which is ridiculous considering that the national average is 6% not matching.
Hi! I was not, I was at LECOM but this is so sad to hear about USF. The process is becoming harder and harder because they continue to open medical schools but not equivalent residency positions😑😑
When she applied to the program the start of soap she would of given them contact details they would of checked their list of people who applied to people still unmatched
Hi Sydney, I don't know why this showed up on my playlist. This seems like a strange way to apply to college. Sorry to hear you didn't get accepted. But why would you need to see a doctor because you didn't get accepted into college?
Dear Sydney…thank you for sharing this…I am a strong believer that things happen for a reason and I am happy to say that the reason was that one year later you are one of my pediatric residents and all the experiences that you gained made you the extraordinary resident you are!
You are SO KIND. We all are so grateful for you and I cannot say thank you enough for all of your continued support.❤️
Sorry you had to go through this. I’m sure a lot of people appreciate you sharing this time of importance and the process of SOAPing. Thank you.
No Thank you so much for your kind words 🙏🏼

I'm sorry you didn't match and had to SOAP. Just out of curiosity, were you at USF? If so, this seems to be a pretty consistent trend and problem with USF for the past several years since we're seeing tons of people having to SOAP each year. I just watched the match ceremony and it seems like about 10-15% of the class is SOAPing, which is ridiculous considering that the national average is 6% not matching.
Hi! I was not, I was at LECOM but this is so sad to hear about USF. The process is becoming harder and harder because they continue to open medical schools but not equivalent residency positions😑😑
Can you share your stats??? Like gpa, and test scores!?
how did they know to call you? or where to call you?
When she applied to the program the start of soap she would of given them contact details they would of checked their list of people who applied to people still unmatched
yes exactly!
Hi Sydney, I don't know why this showed up on my playlist.
This seems like a strange way to apply to college.
Sorry to hear you didn't get accepted.
But why would you need to see a doctor because you didn't get accepted into college?
Its not college. Its for Residency (post-medical school)
Omg congratulations
I love you so much 😭😭 i hope this won't happen to me
Have faith and work hard!! No matter what happens, it will all work out! Perspective is everything ❤️
