When we were in Bavaria in May we took a day trip down to Füssen and then through Austria to Garmisch where I took my family to one my favorite childhood memories, the Partnachklamm. They said it was the highlight of the day. Thanks for another great video. Still can't wait for that Starnberg-Andechs-Ammersee video! ;)
@@tanck09 we rented a car and drove so that we could explore and stop where we pleased. There is a regional train from Innsbruck that goes this way (we crossed the tracks to have a picnic), but I'm not sure if it interfaces with the Bavarian regional trains in either Fussen or Garmisch. I do know that you can take a train from Innsbruck to München though.
Y'all are far and away the best travel videos I've watched. To be fair, I guess, I haven't watched that many, but it's because I tend to find them moderately insufferable! (The really personal ones are less so, but also not the most useful or easy to watch. I have nothing against a couple of happy people showing off their great trip to [where ever], but also it's not that useful or the most fun to watch.) In contrast, your videos ended up essentially being the backbone to the plan I have for the trip I'm taking next April, and you're making me want to start planning another trip already to go to places that I can't fit into a single 2-week vacation! BTW the details about HOW to get to places are something that almost no one seems to do; thank you! Edit: I just saw someone else's comment about suggestions for clothing for different seasons, and I echo that. We're from Texas and all of our clothes are basically, "Okay so is it 80 degrees and humid or 105 degrees and humid?"
Wow thank you so much! This really REALLY means a lot. You basically reiterated exactly how we feel about the current state of travel RUclips. Most of the popular travel channels seem to be lifestyle or family vlogs, and not actually guides (as many of them claim to be). I also agree, that that's fine, but their trips usually seem kinda low quality/poorly planned. We have gone on vacation so many times, and realised how poorly represented so many vacation destinations are by YT travel vlogs. You can't rely on them. Travel blogs are still the way to go. Anyway, thanks for the really nice comment. Will consider talking more about clothing for traveling in Germany. I think we have taken that information for granted.
Hi, I enjoy your channel a lot. I was stationed for 6 months in Garmisch in 1976 in the US Army at their Rec Center. I didn't know about the Werdenfels castle ruins, I' m sorry that I missed it. One of my favorite places was the Reissersee near Hausberg. I like how it's feather shape is pointed right toward the Zugspitze. Your channel brings back some great memories , Thanks

I've visited GaPa many times back in 1963 & 1964. I climbed the Zwolferkopf via the Zwolferkante with well known alpine guide Helmut Pfanzelt, and we then descended through Partnachklamm. I came out soaked to the skin but was a very happy person. My friend and guide had suggested bringing a Regenschirm (umbrella) in my pack, but I braved it without one. One of my "trips of a lifetime" that I recall with great joy.
Ben & Camille - your videos have been so helpful as I plan for next week's trip to Munich, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Oberammergau. Really took the overwhelm out of trying to pinpoint priorities in the whole of Germany. As an urbanist, my bf loves when you shit on cars and your tips for public transport have been spot on. Hey guys, cracking video of my favorite Bavarian place, we are going back again in June for 7 nights at Ferienhaus Heimhof, right at the base for the Keuzeckbahn, we stayed there in May this year, well recommended, an interesting point is as a guest there it includes a free local bus pass for your stay, how cool is that especially as the bus stops right out side the apartment's at the ski lift every half hour, obviously a day trip to your home town of Munich will be on the cards as i want to vist the war museum on the out skirts.( and have some beer.) keep up the good work.
Due to your recommendation we just did Mount Wank. Absolutely phenomenal hike, though definifely were exhausted at the end. We had a baby on our back so we really enjoyed the beer on top and the gondola ride back down. Hoping to do Walchensee or Tegernsee soon!
We loved our day trip from Munich to the Zugspitze. I wish we had more time to explore Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Hopefully, we can do some of these beautiful hikes next time! 😊

What a jewel I've found on Garmisch Partenkirchen while planning a summer trip... thanks a lot! Great channel! Keep traveling and sharing beautiful and useful things! :)
Great video, i have been to all of the places mentioned. I have not been to Garmisch since 1997. Forgot how beautiful it was. I worked at the Von Steuben hotel. Once again, great video.
thank you so much! It will be crowded in July, so be sure to get to the trains at least 20 minutes before they leave. Be sure to make reservations for restaurants as well!
Thank you. Very well done, lots of info. Preparing my trip to the Dolomites, munich and St-Moritz, your videos are very helpful. Keep up the great work.👍🏼
I’m the only one talking about like 90% of the stuff on this channel ;) it feels like every other video we include a bunch of stuff most people are skipping past.
@@NearFromHome Agreed. I love your style of travel. My parents have to have their whole day filled. My wife and I will be showing our daughter both ways, and I can't wait to show her all the fun, sehr alt und schon places in Europe.
The Partnachklamm was one of the best hikes in my life, absolutely gorgeous. To make it easier, take the gondola UP the mountain and hike down. It's at the little hotel on the right side of the trail.
Love your videos and the channel. My wife and I are visiting Munich in late October, and are planning on taking a few of the day trips you've featured on this channel. We're from a very warm, humid climate in the USA, so we're not 100% clear on how heavy our coats should be. Have you considered making a video about recommended clothing or gear for different seasons?
It'll be somewhere between 35f and 53f around late October during the day and humidity should be close to 70-80% average. Though not entirely sure (haven't yet experienced it myself), but it is mentioned that on average there is a lot of rainfall here as well. In general, consider: it's a high mountain climate, with Germany's highest mountain right next to it.
We are going in august to Farchant for a week . Its our first holiday to the mountains . You have great tips to do , love your video's . we are gonna do some of tips and now gonna watch some more of your videos
Wow we loved this! Watched it on the TV last night and you’ve inspired so many more trips! We’d heard of a fair bit, but not that ice hotel on the zugspitze! That looks amazing. Thanks for this great video cheers 🍻
Great video! I'm putting another biking and hiking trip to Germany/Austria and Switzerland next September with the lads and you make a strong case for spending a few days here. Thanks for posting this video. All the best from California
Love this video! My family and I will be visiting in a few weeks! How realistic do you think it would be to do the Zugspitze cable car, take a quick pic in front of the Eibsee lake, and do the Partnachklamm hike in one day? 😅
I am not sure that would be very fun. I think if you took the first cable car up, it would be possible, but you would be very rushed. have a nice vacation!
Awesome video, Garmisch is always fun and beautiful. We already did a lot of your recommendations from you guys. Luxembourgh (the latest), Seceda, Ehrenberg and most things around Garmisch. Next on the list are the lakes, we havent been there yet. Ever considered klettersteigen/via ferrata (love to see you do that, although it can be a little scary)? There is an awesome klettersteig trail to the top of the Alpspitze.
Thanks so much! Glad to hear that you’ve been getting out there. This really is a a beautiful part of the world. I (Camille) have been wanting to do a beginners’ klettersteige, but Ben is very afraid of heights 😭
Really nice video! In May we did a little roadtrip Sonthofen - Mittenwald - Garmisch-Partenkirchen. We ate breakfast in a little castle ruin near Sonthofen. It was an amazing experience. We did the Leutasch klamm near Mittenwald. Started hiking early in the morning, we had the place to ourselves :D We also went to Eibsee, what a beautiful lake! They were working on the cable car to Zugspitze, we did not do that, but we can always go back!
Sounds like the perfect trip! We stayed in Sonthofen 2 years ago before hiking to Germany’s highest lake. (Of course we have 2 vids in it 😅) If you guys ate lunch in Burg Fluhenstein, then we also visited there too 😎. Really cool!
What was the weather like in May? Was there snow in the town, at lake Eibsee or was it melted by then? I worry it may be too cold for us coming 2nd week in May. Thank you for any input you can provide.
@@fourjohnstons hi! We did not have any snow in the towns. We did bring a warmer fleece jacket, sometimes it can get cold. But we also had sunny days that a sweater was not needed! Only you can have snow if you go a bit higher up when hiking
Thanks ! I love your videos. So much information. Anyone think the Partnachklamm gorge is possible to do if you have difficulties walking more than 4 miles?
It’s probably the easiest thing you can do. I believe there are carriages that go from the ski jump got the gorge entrance. I wouldn’t walk from the town either. It would be a long way there and back.
Like others have said, thank you for including the transportation to these areas! We just moved to Germany a few months ago so you help take some of the guesswork out of how to get to some of these places. I look forward to using your suggestions ❤❤
We're headed to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in early August, and your video has us excited to get there. Like you, we want to e-bike our way around the countryside on the days we're not doing the "tour bus" thing, so if you have a bike rental facility and recommended bike trails, please let me know. Again, thanks for a great video.
I’d recommend checking the videos linked from this videos for more details. In particular the Eibsee video, and since you are in the area I’d recommend checking out our Linderhof video as that’s got some great, if not the best, e-biking in the area. Honestly the area is so easy the tour bus is barely worth it, I’ve never needed it.
I've watched 2 of your videos now and enjoyed both of them very much. I have put Bavaria high on my to do list because of seeing these. I wonder if you will get to the Salzkammergut Lakes District in Austria someday. I want to visit that region as well.
We actually have a whole series in the Salzkammergut! Though we’ve been meaning to go back for a long time. The videos are a little old, but I hope they hold up :)
I am in a wheelchair designed for outdoor travel. I am wondering if i could manage in the Partenkirchen gorge? I see some steps to the bridges that my partner can help with.
Hi there! I love your videos!!! We are planning to do a day trip from Munich to there following your tips but do you think we would be able to do it on Christmas eve? Thank you!!
Straight foward question (but maybe not so easy answer?): Eibsee or Tegernsee? 🙏 Originally planned the former but now conflicted after watching another video of yours 😅🤗
It really depends! Bike riding to Eibsee so you can walk or swim is defiantly more of an outdoorsy day. You can hike near Tegernsee, but it is more of a relaxed lake day.

YES definitely. The Zugspitze gondola and lake are next to each other. I don't know if there is a bike rental next to the Zugspitze. We rented ours in GP.
I liked the video but it was blurry during the whole time. Not sure why. I went to Garmisch in 2000. I was in different parts of Germany for a total of 14 days. It was awesome. My mom and her whole family is from Northern Germany. I definitely have to go back. Look forward to more of your videos.
Did you check your RUclips video settings? As it should be possible to display at 4K. Perhaps your internet connection wasn’t strong enough and so you received a lower quality version?
Awesome video! Will take the ti..s to my trip to Garmish this month... Question: I see many nature sites, may I take my dog along? I saw they are allowed at Zugspitze, but I'm not sure about the other places..
I am really not sure, but I see dogs in restaurants and cable cars all the time. As long as the dog is chill and well trained, I think it's ok. I would look into the specific rules more though.
Eibsee is definitely on my list for next month's trip, as it is indeed highly praised for photography. Definitely doing that hike around the lake you mention in your vid! Though I'll be starting from a different mountain town that is perhaps a bit less known, but also comes very highly recommended: Oberstdorf (with mount Nebelhorn right next to it and Rubihorn and the Unterer Geisalpsee very close to it). Think it's about the same distance from Munich as it would be to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but a bit less touristy.
You can buy the Bayern ticket. It allows you to use any public transportation in Bavaria (except for ICE) for the day. You could also buy a Deutschland ticket. It is 49 euros for the month. It allows you to use any public transport in Germany (except ICE) for the month. It is really only for locals, so there are a few hurdles you ave to pass, but also some work arounds. I would check it out!
Hi. Love your videos. Contemplating an outdoorsy trip to Bavaria, and, as an older person, I have to ask the Gilligan's Island question. What's bathroom availability like on the Mt. Wank hike? Eibsee? Other lakes? Also, is there cell service?
There generally aren't bathrooms in the mountains. There are restaurants all throughout with bathrooms though. I think cell service is good in these locations, it's really not as remote as you would think.
Hey guys, I really love your videos. I'm bringing my family of 3 to Munich on the first leg of a three country European trip at the end of May. We will only be in Munich for most of 3 days. With the second leg of our trip being to Interlaken, Switzerland and the Swiss Alps, would you recommend heading down to Garmisch Partenkirchen for a day trip, or is our short time better served exploring the city of Munich?
It really depends on what you like! If you are a city traveler, you could probably find enough stuff to do in Munich in three days. I personally don't love city traveling, so I would recommend taking a day trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Luckily we have a while playlist of activity in the town if you decide to visit!
About 19 years ago, in 2003, I took a train from Munich to a train station which I could not remember which one now, and then walked for some time like maybe 30 mins to an hour which I could not remember how long too, and then came to this mountain which I could not recall the name for many years and took the gondola up to its peak. I vaguely remember it's name is short. When your video mentioned Mount Wank, I instantly recall this was it! Lol. What is the name of the train station close to this area? I really could not remember.
Hahahah glad to have been of service. The closest train station is the Garmisch-Partenkirchen station. Mt Wank is a 40 min walk or ten minute bus ride from there
Can you please expand on your bike ride to Ebisee Lake? I am intereseted. On they note I would love your honest opinion on the Romantic Road, cycling it. Your opinion and/or video experience would be beneficial.
I have no idea about cycling the Romantic road, unfortunately. I'm sure its great though. All the towns on the road are beautiful, and Germans take cycling and cycle infrastructure very seriously.
Beautiful video, we are planning to go there on Easter weekend, 9th of April. Any idea how the weather would be?? Also because of Easter can one expect certain restriction in service???
please please please stay overnight at the igloo and share the experience so we can know if it's worth it 🤣 I might want to try it in the future, but it's definitely easier to make a decision after seeing your videos! 💕
Amazing playlist, I am off to Garmisch this weekend and your video helped a lot. Just wanted to get an idea of the range of e-bikes, I have lots of places marked down for a 3 day stay, was wondering if e-bikes would help to cover them all. Eibsee, Geroldsee etc etc. Not in a single day, but still wanted to get an idea of the range. Also, do they allow to keep bicycles overnight?
2:32 Factcheck: The cablecar is NOT german, but austrian engineering. The manufacturer is Doppelmayr, the world leader in cablecar construction, based in Wolfurt, Austria.
But apart from the last one these are the tourist spots everybody knows ;-). If you want to go to spots that usually only locals go you might have to go to the Isar river before it goes into Sylvenstein lake which is also beautiful apart from the car bridge. Or you go to Walchensee, a lake usually only locals go to. Or visit the monastery in Ettal where the monks still wear traditional robes. Also if you want to go skiing the Alpspitze and Hausberg are way better than Zugspitze. The Alpspitze is also beautiful in the summer.
Yeah, this video is really just to introduce beginners specifically to Garmisch itself. We get these questions all the time from people making their first trip to Germany, and this is a reasonable place to start. Though your suggestions are good, they definitely aren’t in Garmisch, they are just a little too far for me to put them in a video like this, nor would I broadly recommend them to every single person. That being said we have covered Walchensee and Ettal. So I hope you stick around, watch some of our deeper videos and share us with your friends!
I would say this would be fine for a 10-13 year old. It takes about an hour. There is a very steep ascent at the very end, so I really recommend renting an ebike. We have a video about Eibsee that really dives into the details. You should check it out!
Thanks so much! Our drone is under the requirements for a registered drone, so I'm pretty sure all of the shots are legal. lol. It is hard to find information on exactly where we are and aren't allowed to fly.
@@NearFromHome Actually I wanted to buy one, but given the kind of restrictions, €50000 fine, I decided not to. By the way, seeing your Linderhof video, we visited today and it was unforgettable. Heartfelt thanks to you both. Can't say enough, may be one day will invite you both.
@@NearFromHome Then pay attention to the weather conditions and opening hours. Rainwear and suitable mountain boots are recommended for the gorge in any case. The way into the Höllental via the Höllentalangerhütte is impressive with the surrounding mountains.
@@NearFromHome If the hut is crowded, just go a little further into the Höllental. A very beautiful alpine trail is the tour from Kreuzeck over the Hupfleitenjoch into the Höllental. Glad to have helped! It really does get overwhelming. Hope you have a nice time
That was a superb video, breathtaking views & exceptionally informational...thank you very much!
Thank you!!
What a jewel I've found on Garmisch Partenkirchen while planning a summer trip... thanks a lot! Great channel! Keep traveling and sharing beautiful and useful things! :)
Thanks so much!! :)
Great video, i have been to all of the places mentioned. I have not been to Garmisch since 1997. Forgot how beautiful it was. I worked at the Von Steuben hotel. Once again, great video.
Very cool! Kinda wish I worked for at a hotel in the mountains 🧐 Glad you have seen so much!
As always another fantastic video! Enjoyed watching the video with a fresh Spaten Oktoberfest! Cheers 🍻
Thanks so much! 🥰

We have been meaning to do that!
Hello! Traveling to the area end July ‘23. I’m a bit concerned about the crowds. This video provided fabulous tips. One of the best travel videos!
thank you so much! It will be crowded in July, so be sure to get to the trains at least 20 minutes before they leave. Be sure to make reservations for restaurants as well!
Eibsee is so amazing, thanks for sharing this vlog,I was in Germany in June and love it.
Thanks so much! I am glad you had a nice time! :)
Thank you. Very well done, lots of info. Preparing my trip to the Dolomites, munich and St-Moritz, your videos are very helpful. Keep up the great work.👍🏼
Glad to have helped!
GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!!! Thank You!!!!
thanks!
Thank you for this vidéo! Making preparations for my holidays!
Thanks! Glad to have helped!
I didn't know about the Igloo hotel or the castle. We'll be there in March, so I'll be sure to visit them. Thank you!
Thanks! Hope you have a nice time!
Oh man, my wife has wanted to stay in an igloo for YEARS. Can't believe you're the only one talking about this at the top of Zugspitze...
Yes absolutly!
Hye can u guide me what is the easier way to go to Partnachklamm from garmisch station? And how to get there (as in transport) Tq for the help
Hi in your experience is this pretty doable with a toddler? I don't think she'll sit in our baby carrier, so we'd be holding our hand/carrying her
@@karikaru I would not take a toddler on this hike, the slopes and conditions would be dangerous
@@magnificus8581 okay thanks 👍
Thank you for the lovely video, been to a few of the places, loved every minute.

I'm looking forward to spending at least one day in Garmisch-Partenkirchen during my upcoming trip. Thanks for the beautiful content!
It is definitely worth it :)
I was just there, and I'm going back in another season and visit those that I've missed. Thanks for the tip, please keep them coming! 😊😊😊
Thanks so much! Hope you have a great time!

Great travel suggestions!

No, we have, but that does seem like a good idea, as a lot of our recommendations are for outdoorsy people
Another good one
Thank you! 🥰
We are going in august to Farchant for a week . Its our first holiday to the mountains . You have great tips to do , love your video's . we are gonna do some of tips and now gonna watch some more of your videos
And tell all of your friends! ;)
Great vid, well made and informative.
Thanks!
Wow we loved this! Watched it on the TV last night and you’ve inspired so many more trips! We’d heard of a fair bit, but not that ice hotel on the zugspitze! That looks amazing. Thanks for this great video cheers 🍻
Thanks so much! Now you can come visit ;)
Great video! I'm putting another biking and hiking trip to Germany/Austria and Switzerland next September with the lads and you make a strong case for spending a few days here. Thanks for posting this video. All the best from California
Thanks so much! Hope you can make use of the information in the video. A hiking and biking trip sounds like so. much fun!
Really great content! Your videos have been our favorite as we plan our trip to Bavaria.
We’ll be sure to look for you at Hoffbraukeller ;-)
Prost!!
Thanks so much!
Thank you so much 😊
Thanks so much! I am glad you are finding it helpful. Have a wonderful time!
each video you make, makes me want to come travel again in Bavaria (or even move there :D )
🥰 it’s really is a great place
Thank you!!
Thanks! Everything closes on Christmas eve. You can do the hikes and take the train though.
Straight foward question (but maybe not so easy answer?): Eibsee or Tegernsee? 🙏
Originally planned the former but now conflicted after watching another video of yours 😅🤗
It really depends! Bike riding to Eibsee so you can walk or swim is defiantly more of an outdoorsy day. You can hike near Tegernsee, but it is more of a relaxed lake day.
@@NearFromHome thank you so much! This definitely helps!
Great vid. Looking forward to visiting.!!
Yeah, it’s a free town. We seem to always end up back there.
This is awesome!! Do you recommend a hotel or place to stay?!
We like Werdenfelserei! Check us out on the website, Plannin, and you can book through there!

Is it possible to combine Zugspitze and Eibsee in one day? Can I rent a bike from the bottom of the Zugspitze peak tram and bike to the lake?
Hope you have fun. We have been meaning to go to Oberstdorf for a while now 😅
I am so confused on the train passes. What is the best options if we plan on going from munich to other towns on different days?
@@NearFromHome Something to ponder. Thanks so much for getting back to me.
Headed for GaPa in June! How long does it take to walk from Partenkirchen to the Partnachklamm?
maybe 30 minutes?
Do you recommend garmish in may ? Really would love to go next may
yes!
The weather will be warmish but not hot yet. They are closed Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday. On Saturday, stores are open until 1!

Hahah seems like we might have to. I actually met someone the other day who did the experience, and they said they weren't cold. haha
Nothing for Camille! ;-)
planning a trip during Christmas holidays. Will those attractions esply the gorge and lakeside be closed during Christmas?
The gorges will be closed! I think everything else will be open, but please do check first!
Nice cover, i recommend to add details or location below video
I have linked the videos for each of these activities, so you’ll just have to check them out 😉
2:32 Factcheck: The cablecar is NOT german, but austrian engineering.
Gotta stay in the igloo Camille 😝
Hahahahhaah
How long was the bike ride to the lake from Garmish? Would it be suitable for 10-13yr olds?
I would say this would be fine for a 10-13 year old. It takes about an hour. There is a very steep ascent at the very end, so I really recommend renting an ebike. We have a video about Eibsee that really dives into the details. You should check it out!
We plan to return again for the Christmas market. How's rhe snow and weather in November?
I don’t think there will be any snow in November, but it will be cold.
Thank you. Cold is ok.
@@ellenjimenez57 You can never tell. A few years back while staying in Mittenwald in early April, woke up to 5 inches of snow
Do you know how to get from Garmisch to Chur…without going back to Munich?.
thumbs up? without any doubt, very good videos! Could you use your drones?
Thanks so much! Our drone is under the requirements for a registered drone, so I'm pretty sure all of the shots are legal. lol. It is hard to find information on exactly where we are and aren't allowed to fly.

If the hut is crowded, just go a little further into the Höllental.
A very beautiful alpine trail is the tour from Kreuzeck over the Hupfleitenjoch into the Höllental.
However, alpine surefootedness and a head for heights are required here.
