Thanks for tuning in to this loadout! Let us know what you'd like to see next in the comments below!
If you ever went fishing with my uncle and he asked for a panfish bug you'd ask him " what color do you want?" "Any color" he'd reply "as long as it's yellow". Everyone on that lake called him Mr. Bluegill. My rule is chartreuse by day, yellow during Sunset, and black after Sun is down starting to get dark and moon is bright.
Good advice! Thanks for watching.
I have been telling everyone who will listen how fun it is to catch panfish on a small 3wt fiberglass rod and after watching this I feel validated.
@@TheChocolateDad Glad we could help and thanks for spreading the word!
It's funny you showed that chartreuse popper as your to to bug. A little yellow popper just about like that saved many day of fishing with my dad when I was younger. We'd finish my paper route in the morning and then head to our favorite lake about 40 miles away. We'd fish for bass/northerns until mid morning then go to the gill beds with little yellow poppers just about like you showed. My dads been gone for 30 years now so thanks for the memories. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
Thanks for being here!
Brian thank you Sir. Man that was a ton of great advice. Totally loved the tour of your panfish boxes. That was like a handheld shopping trip through Mad River Outfitters. Thank you for your time and patience. You are an incredible individual. God bless.
Thanks for being here!
Brian, totally enjoyed the video. After watching and commenting, I went back and watched it the second time. I really like the looks of the 16 compartment fly boxes. So much that I just ordered 2 of them. Thanks again. God bless.
Thanks so much for the support!
A small popper or foam spider have never let me down in the spring/summer.
Pretty easy! Thanks for watching.
Your videos are fantastic, I really enjoy watching them.
Thanks for being here.
Great video. I fish for panfish almost every evening off the dock in the summer. It’s just a blast!
Thanks for watching.
Panfish are a growing obsession for me. I've been spinner fishing for them for 7 years now and like many, I'm also branching out to cast a fly at them. Looking forward to seeing those panfish fly patterns, particularly that wax worm thingy you showed. If you can, do a vid on it early on so we can spend some time on those long winter nights tying a few! I'll bet that wax worm pattern might also go good under the ice.
Thanks for watching. He’s working on the videos now! Stay tuned.
I love catching panfish on the fly. Was exclusively a bass fisherman on traditional gear. Now I almost exclusively fish for blue gills on the fly
Flyfishing for bluegill is more fun than a human being should be allowed to have.
Thanks for the vid. Good info for fishing pan fish.Theyre the first fish i caught with a fly rod since i live here in the az desert.
@@tracythomas3565 Thanks for watching.
Panfish are fun, and a great way to get kids into fly fishing as well. My favorite pattern that always catches something is a green weenie in worm green, Caddis green, or chartreuse.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the educational and professional Panfish Fly Fishing video.
Thanks for watching.
Having spent time in the Southeast I became fond of the cane poles. Pretty much tenkara fishing with bait. Absolute blast.
Thanks for watching.
Great video, thinking I am going to get back into fly fishing in my early 70’s after a many year hiatus. I am thinking pan fishing might be be an easy transition back into the hobby
Thanks for watching!
Brian, you are amazing And I got to spend some time with Kelly at his place when we were out west he is a awesome guy😉
I got a few this evening 🤣
Awesome! Thanks for being here.
Tied one in brown and caught a bluegill within 15min of trying it out! Great fly ✊🏼🫡.
@@BustaNAugusta Thanks for watching!
Thanks for such great videos . Those old Betts foam spiders rigged to sink or float in black or white bring them in like piranhas .
Thanks for watching.
Yellow Perch are a blast to catch on the fly
@@edwardlee3571 Agreed! Thanks for watching.
I have had huge success with the standard players in trout dry fly fishing. My favorite to fish is a 14 or 16 x stimulator. Smaller bass even takebit on a slow strip.
Agreed! Standard dries work well at times.
ONE of the great things about panfish is that they are always ready for a fight. Morning, noon and right up to dark. Muddy water, clear water their always ready to dish out a nice fight. My fav is 4 wtw/7' fiberglass (OLD Eagle Claw rod) with the one of the old Martin single action reels I have stashed back.
Fav bug is the old time green sponge spider. I used to buy the Betts (when I could find them) and eventually learned to tie my own but green bodies are impossible to find.....
Thanks for watching!
Fishing for 'gills at Lake Snowden, Oh. is where I learned to cast a fly rod. Love 'gill gettin'. chuckle
Thanks for watching.
Great video! One of my go to panfish flies is a Gartside Sparrow in sizes 10 to 14. Try olive or natural pheasant.
Thanks for watching and sharing.
Panfish are really fun on the fly
We agree!
Fantastic vid
Thanks for watching. Much appreciated.
@@Madriveroutfitters can’t find the big eyed bluegill killer vid. Search engine can’t find it. Thanks. Bob
8:11 8:26 those are my all time favorite flies to use for panfish
Thanks for watching!
@@Madriveroutfitters no problem love to watch your videos and I’m a big coustomer on your online store
@@Iflyfish_12 We really appreciate the support!
@@Madriveroutfitters no problem. I am an intermediate fly fisherman my dad thought me and I’m 12 years old do you have any suggestions
I had a Cabela’s fly rod and reel for many years but never really got into fly fishing although every once in a while I’d break it out and catch a bass or two. Then I stumbled onto a FB page called “Panfish on the Fly” which rekindled my interest! I’ve also learned much from your videos and have a question. When fishing a panfish popper with a dropper nymph setup, does this change the size of the leader/tippet you would use compared to only using a popper or single fly? Hope my question makes sense! Thanks.
Thanks for watching. Please send your questions directly to the folks at the shop and they will be happy to help. You can email them or call them but the do not monitor the comments section here.
Right up my alley!
Thanks for being here.
Pan fishing with fly rod is a blast
When the summer gets too hot for trout and the kids are home from school, putting them on panfish is great. A catch every cast without fail.
We agree! Tons of fun!!
My best luck for bluegills come from tiny poppers, and tiny foam hoppers, spiders, or beetles. Sometimes I'll use a pure "dry fly", or wooly buggers, too. If they're there, it's not hard to get them to strike! There are lots of small, shallow, ponds in my area full of scum and vegetation, so I don't need (or really want!) to go too deep.
Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching.
Excellent video...thanks
Thanks for watching.
Any success with flies for perch? My limited experience is bright attractors work better than imitative patterns. Add a stinger hook since they often nip at the fly and fish deep and slow with a sink tip line.
My best pattern for BIG bluegill is an olive dragon fly nymph, maybe size 8.
Please send any and all questions directly to Brian at the shop and he'll be happy to help/answer. You can e-mail him or call him. Thanks!
Would love a tutorial on your red, white and chartreuse bug you showed.
Stay tuned.....coming!!!
@@Madriveroutfitters by the way, I just bought some scientific anglers mastery fly line and a like butter t-shirt from you guys. I ordered it online and y'all shipped it all the way in North Carolina in just a few days. Well done!
@@scots2129 Thanks for the support.
The boxes are the best!
Thanks for watching.
Are the hook sizes similar to trout hooks? Started tying a couple of months ago. Old Chief, Texas
He said most are size 8-12? Feel free to call him if any further questions.
For that wooly worm jig, how did you do the tag end? Ive tried it out but i cant get it right on my flies.
Please contact Brian directly through the shop and he’ll be happy to help! You can email him or call him. Thanks.
@@Madriveroutfitters ill do just that, thanks!

The San Juan Worm will change your life for panfishing. I have never had a lure get attacked like it does.
As well as other types of fish! Never leave home without a San Juan Worm!
Why would panfish not eat flies when they are known to eat aquatic/terrestrial insects?
Well....this is a video about catching panfish on flies.
I feel special bc I never see anyone with an automatic fly reel. Mine is a very old Shakespeare
Thanks for watching!
How do you tie the tandem flies sir?
Please send any and all questions over to Brian at the shop and he’ll be happy to help! Thanks.
No bream killers?
Pretty sure he had some in the box there?
How are you doing the 15 lb butt to flyline?
Most likely a snell? Feel free to call or e-mail Brian at the shop to be sure though. He's always happy to help!
Place my order last night.
Thanks for the support!
IMPORTANT QUESTION! How did Brian say, "You can see why they call it the Boobie" and keep a straight face? 🤣😂🤣
You’ll have to check with him on that? Maybe medication?
I keep catching Bluegill on a 12 or 14 jig nymph under a chubby Chernobyl. They’ve also hit on just a tungsten surveyor and rainbow warrior. Seems like they’ll eat anything.
Thanks for watching!
come on down to south carolina let's catch some bluegills
We'll be righ there! Send a pin!
This is the dumbest thing I’ve ran into in a while. $500 for a rod to catch bluegill? That’s a bit ridiculous. You can spend less than $100 for EVERYTHING you need to catch bluegill with a fly rod and be much better off. This is just silly.
Or......you can spend whatever you want to! Much better off? He uses this for other stuff as well. His main Bluegill rod is $1200!!!!
@@MadriveroutfittersI guess if you’ve got the cheese, just seems frivolous though. You really aren’t gaining anything with the extra $ spent other than feeding your ego…
@@352508 You haven’t watched many of his videos have you? If so, you would know that he is almost always promoting lesser priced and practical gear. He wasn’t telling you that you had to have an expensive fiberglass rod to catch bluegill. He was just telling you what he was using that day. Pay attention to context before you make rude comments?
It looks like a grub. Call it a grubtail
Thanks for watching and for the suggestion. Will pass along to Brian.
