I could relate to Izzy on the guitar so many times during this set. His face of pure bliss and joy at certain moments was just so relatable. It must have felt amazing, to be part of this. ❤ and they all did an absolutely amazing job
something she embodies that I was always taught in vocal lessons in a classical sense is that the voice is part of the ensemble. You as the vocalist aren't always the centerpiece of the sound. Rather a part of the overall sound that is being expressed. I feel she has a great sense of that and blends well. Even better the ladies harmonizing blend SOOO well. cheers ladies true professionals
I was confused at first trying to figure out whether or not her vocals were being synthesized in certain parts but they are all natural from what I've seen and heard and I'm so in awe. NEW FAVORITE ARTIST.
She’s been this in control of her instrument since her time in chairlift. And she’s only blossomed since going solo. Hers was the last concert I saw before the covid lockdown in February 2020 and she was ill with either a terrible cold or covid and while she was clearly not feeling well she still slayed. I’ll never forget that show.
@@geoms6263With as prominent as it is you'd think you could understand what she's singing... Instead it sounds like galimatias. She obviously has not had training in vocal enunciation. Before hearing her speak I thought maybe she was foreign and had a really harsh accent. Nope.
Listening to this artist feels like an immersive experience, where their music becomes a sensory cascade akin to raindrops on your face. In each note, there's a profound connection, a sense of divinity encapsulated within the rain. It transcends mere sound, making it feel like an ethereal encounter with something greater than oneself - as if the very essence of God is present in the music, and each listener is a part of this divine rain, collectively experiencing the beauty and depth of the artist's creation.

This brought me to tears lol. Caroline’s voice is so captivating and the keyboardist made me emotional with the bunny is a rider insert. Also the backup singers name being Melody is so cool, the fact she has a beautiful voice makes sense
Never seen anyone play with their voice like this with that control. This is almost like a different way of singing. This will be one of the best albums of the decade. Aesthetic Influences of the european antique, traditional folk sounds and 00s spirkles of production. I can only imagine how many hour she was singing by herself to discover and master those vocal tricks.
I don't know what NPR did with the audio-recording for this episode, but it sounded absolutely fantastic! Some of the best acoustics I've ever heard on RUclips.
You are right, but to me all tiny desk concerts sound amazing. They really know what they're doing sound wise, I guess that's one of the reasons this channel is so popular.
the way she closes her hands while modulates her voice...heavenly to see how both guitarists are vibing with the symphony...breathtaking performance, plenty of details to get lost in
other than maybe Bobby McFerrin I can't think of anyone that can jump from note to note being an octave away from each other with such accuracy. I thought before seeing her perform live that she had a mixer to produce her voice to sound like that. How impressive!!!
Check out Autumn Leaves performed by Rachelle Ferrell circa 1989. One of the greatest live vocal performances I've ever heard. She does a lot of similar things to Bobby McFerrin. I also find the way she moves her body during the performance to be quite fascinating - Caroline is also similarly an artist who employs her physicality in service to her vocals to great effect.
like nothing I have ever heard before ! ❤️ It’s so hard to hear something different that’s so good! Thank you all ! I love the music, writing, singing - You all have unique style- please keep your deep soul sound. I don’t understand it (as a basic pop-rock musician) but I love them. They play and sing every note with such passion. Large kudos to all! 🙏👍❤️ This is the first music in a long time I would love to support and buy.
These new arrangements are so so good. I would die for an album or EP of stripped down/reworked arrangements from Caroline. Also Blood And Butter and Sunset are so Zeldacoded. I can’t unhear Gerudo Valley when listening to them.

She really knows how to improvise and give to the song that “something” that'll make you feel everything she's feeling
Never heard of her before. This is why I adore Tiny Desk. NPR lets me discover this kind of gem.
Never heard of them? Getting John Lennon to do your drums should be a pretty quick way to get known to the general public.
@@marnixvanboetzelaer631lol he does look like Lennon😂
her old band chairlift is pretty fun, too.
def see her live if you get the chance. She is pretty amazing.
Same for me - never heard of Caroline before seeing this - now I adore her music.
"I believe" is one of my favorites from the album with the burst-sounding effects in the album and is amazing in this acoustic version!!
The control she has in her voice is wild
the Hey Big Eyes melody thrown into the Blood and Butter outro thingy at 7:22 is so cool
besides hey big they they interpolated bunny is a rider in i believe and in sunset 💞
The clarity and tightness of Caroline AND band is exceptional. One of the brightest talents in music right now.
This is my first time hearing her... how somebody possesses this much raw talent truly is beyond words. Amazing job to the band, prod and everyone else involved.
Sounds like a dying whale
Born with raw talent - no doubt highly polished over a lifetime to this level of mastery. Truly incredible.
The way she interpolates riffs from other songs into these arrangements is so inspiring. I didn’t even know you were allowed to do that
It’s so cool!! She uses the riff from Hey Big Eyes at the end of Blood and Butter and it works sooooo well
and the riff that the bagpipes/keyboardist plays at the end of Blood and Butter is actually Grimes' vocal line from I Fly To You @@mattbeaven1847
YUP and she did that for me!@@mattbeaven1847
"Allowed to fo that"? Why on earth would she not be allowed? These literally are her songs lol
Lol you might be new to music, but this happens a lot.
I just found this trying to find a voice production breakdown. She IS every plug in she ever needed 😮 love this
I’m a 👴 . An old hip hop and Jamaican / British reggae head…desire I want to is one of my all time favourites classic albums. if not a cure to any malaise at least a healing balm imho
The hand shake vibrato thing she does during sunset is so iconic
I can’t get enough of it 😭😭
can't get over it
Is it vibrato? It's so 'fluttery' that is feels almost like it's tremolo.
period
@@dahalofreeek idk im not a doctor
This is by far the greatest acoustic performance I’ve ever heard
Of course she’s drinking water from a chalice, I adore her.
i think that’s more of a goblet shape, but either way it’s sick. where are the drinking vessel experts at
She was is so next level perfect. “I Believe” has always been my favorite track from “Desire, I want to turn into you, “ but this version is just sublime.
That’s her voice magic juice
Yeah about right🤣

It is so insane that her live singing actually sounds like that. The control is used so impressively and interestingly. Also so fitting for a sophie tribute song 🥲

Caroline is in a league all her own. Not just her singing prowess and song writing, but her embodiment of music as a performer. Her backing band also cannot be overlooked. So happy to be inspired by such an incredible artist.
For those who haven't heard of Caroline, check out the band Chairlift. It's her earlier work, that's still some of my favorite music!
Thanks for the tip! I've been a fan of Caroline for a while but I've never heard of Chairlift. Looking forward to checking it out!
she's quite a few projects, Ramona Lisa and CEP are others@@lagunabxo
@@lagunabxo you might be disappointed :D . In my opinion her solo project is much more unique than her previous work in Chairlift which I never really connected to apart from the famous hits at the time (which I guess I liked because it was on TV all the time in iPod commercials)
Seriously, go all the way back to 2008 and listen to every recording she has done.
@@BrendanMacWade you can't make me
She is literally a fkn goddess. 10:40 the fact that she actually is doing the yodel during the falsetto is ridiculous 😮 I try so hard and don't even get close to her 😂 she's so special 😭
easily one of the best tiny desks i have ever seen
I have never heard a voice like hers. absolutely entrancing, one of the best pop stars out rn
Yes, her voice is sooo unique. She has used it in so many creative ways (with her solo projects as well as collaborating with other artists. Search for "Caroline Polachek set @ 7 by 7 | A. G. Cook". Or also the extended version of The Gate. Both are out of this world experiences).
Her control between falsetto and her head voice is craaaazyy
Had never heard of Caroline Polachek before but so glad I stopped on this video. Some music, and some voices, can just send you to another place! Incredible!
Caroline’s voice, jaw-on-the-floor, heart-achingly joyous, is only equal to the material she’s been writing her whole career. Terrific, deft accompaniment from the band, serving the songs well in their arrangement. Well done all👏
The year was 2012 I was a freshman in highschool BLARRING met before by chairlift and falling in love with SOMETHING. Now it's 2023 and I have a 2 year old and you're bigger than ever as a solo artist. I have never been more proud of an artist
Incredible. I felt awful today, this set lifted me out of that feeling. I danced in my chair. I danced around my kitchen. I needed this. Thank you. 🙏
I could relate to Izzy on the guitar so many times during this set. His face of pure bliss and joy at certain moments was just so relatable. It must have felt amazing, to be part of this. ❤ and they all did an absolutely amazing job
i loved her little mix with ‘hey big eyes’ towards the end of ‘blood and butter’ it was so satisfying to hear 🫶🏼
and there was a little ‘bunny is a rider’ instrumental in sunset oh shes such a genius
something she embodies that I was always taught in vocal lessons in a classical sense is that the voice is part of the ensemble. You as the vocalist aren't always the centerpiece of the sound. Rather a part of the overall sound that is being expressed. I feel she has a great sense of that and blends well. Even better the ladies harmonizing blend SOOO well. cheers ladies true professionals
she is otherworldly!!!!! an artist to be studied. thank you caroline
Potentially the best tiny desk...of all time. Every member locked in. I can't stop coming back.
Go watch tune yards - also fantastic
Usher was also fantastic!
I was confused at first trying to figure out whether or not her vocals were being synthesized in certain parts but they are all natural from what I've seen and heard and I'm so in awe. NEW FAVORITE ARTIST.
This is one of those albums where it's just blowing my mind more with every listen. Her voice is amazing.
1:16 she didn't believe in her vocal range in that moment, so smiled! So beautiful, love her!
i can confirm: this girl has made her place among the most beautiful and delicate voices of our generation.
That voice is something...👏👏👏
overrated😀
@@geoms6263With as prominent as it is you'd think you could understand what she's singing... Instead it sounds like galimatias. She obviously has not had training in vocal enunciation. Before hearing her speak I thought maybe she was foreign and had a really harsh accent. Nope.
^ look at these losers trying to claim everyone else’s ears must be fooled. Idgaf about training or technicalities. It sounds great to my ears
Who said what she's saying is important? I don't know most of her lyrics. The important thing is her voice.
So true actually bestie
The way she uses her whole body to modify the way she sounds to the mic is genuinely insane. It’s not dancing, it’s something else 😮
Yes, it's something else. It's singing
@@fcgravisimomoving your body isn’t singing though
@@metalyuncle sure it is. Lots of movements, posture, pelvic rotation, etc. are really important to sound. All art is whatever we want it to be. The boundaries are suggestions
@@obrey__ I agree! Movement isn’t singing tho. Singing is making sounds with your mouth. I responded to @fcgravisimo who seemed quite condescending for no reason
@@metalyuncle ooh, I didn’t even process their reply lol. Yeah I agree with you now that I think about it. The movement that affects sound is technically a different, unique thing
This is amazing! She's like yodeling almost to change pitches super fast. It sounds so clean and awesome.
Each member seems to have a different story to tell through their instruments. Really good attention to detail
I remember when I first listened to Caroline’s music I thought the vocal effects she used were really cool but then I saw her live and realized she can just sing like that
I find it unlistenable. But I generally also don't like Jacob Collier so who am I to say
Sorry, but I am on the "unlistenable" side too. Singing minor and major thirds is the only thing this music is about. But people with no knowledge about music consider this as remarkable "vocal effects".

I can only imagine how many hour she was singing by herself to discover and master those vocal tricks.

other than maybe Bobby McFerrin I can't think of anyone that can jump from note to note being an octave away from each other with such accuracy. I thought before seeing her perform live that she had a mixer to produce her voice to sound like that. How impressive!!!
Imogen Heap is the only other vocalist that I've heard like her. Extraordinary.
chelsea could you point out where you're saying she jumps an octave between notes? i'm only hearing thirds, fourths, fifths at the most.
Prime Mariah Carey
Check out Autumn Leaves performed by Rachelle Ferrell circa 1989. One of the greatest live vocal performances I've ever heard. She does a lot of similar things to Bobby McFerrin. I also find the way she moves her body during the performance to be quite fascinating - Caroline is also similarly an artist who employs her physicality in service to her vocals to great effect.
That hand shake, and vibrato in sunset just SHOOK me

I love the music, writing, singing - You all have unique style- please keep your deep soul sound. I don’t understand it (as a basic pop-rock musician) but I love them. They play and sing every note with such passion. Large kudos to all! 🙏👍❤️ This is the first music in a long time I would love to support and buy.
This is the most strikingly beautiful and unique music I've heard in years. Her voice is just incredible. What amazing control and tone!!
The "Bunny is a Rider" riff at 10:52 at the end of Sunset ! The details !!!
She is so ethereal and magical!! We are so lucky to have been given the opportunity to experience her presence in musical form! 💜💜💜
These new arrangements are so so good. I would die for an album or EP of stripped down/reworked arrangements from Caroline.
Also Blood And Butter and Sunset are so Zeldacoded. I can’t unhear Gerudo Valley when listening to them.

acoustic Blood and Butter is very Zelda coded
She works a lot with Danny Harle (he makes a cameo appearance on the cover of her album, holding his kid) who is a huge Zelda fan
