- This past Monday, December 8th marked ten years since "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott from PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN was assassinated on stage while performing with Damageplan at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio. Dime was shot six times (four times in the head), which killed him instantly.
In commemoration of the tenth anniversary of Dimebag's passing, this past Monday, December 8th (day of the 10th anniversary of DIME's passing) we sat down with KIRK WINDSTEIN of CROWBAR and KINGDOM OF SORROW at St. Vitus Bar in Brooklyn, New York, to talk with him about the legacy of DIMEBAG.
During this very deep and personal interview, not only did Kirk share with us a bunch of heart warming stories about Dime but he also defended his former DOWN bandmate PHILIP H. ANSELMO from the accusations he faced around the time of Dime's passing.
Additionally, Kirk spoke about concert safety and how concerts changed forever after DIme was assassinated on stage.

I remember having a great day on the day Dime got shot. Was prancing around after getting a sweet pay packet, and I went to a friend's store and he had this look on his face and told me what had happened, fucking heartbroken isn't the word.
Life isn't perfect folks, this shit can come out of left field at any time. Get over grudges, never leave friends behind and all of that shit.

My two favorite New Orleans bands by far are Eyehategod and Crowbar. It's got to be the oppressive heat or something that can create such sludgy music. Time Heals nothing by Crowbar and Take as needed for pain by Eyehategod got me thru some dark ass times and still get play regularly to this day. Do yourself a favor buy them both!

Holly Janik you wouldn't want to be here in the summertime when it's 99° and 100% humidity. Haha! They're prolly on an east coast tour now or after the dates they're doing out your way. I'm only about 3 hrs from Nashville where almost any bands go thru if they don't come thru Knoxville. If for some reason they skip TN we're only 3hrs from Atlanta GA too.
+Nate Brenneman I'm a big Doom/sludge/stoner fan but I will never get the appeal of Eyehategod. People praise them up and down but it is complete and total garble to me, nothing at all interesting or good. Crowbar is my rock though! NONE HEAVIER

I saw Crowbar at one of their first gigs in Thibodaux Louisiana back in the early 90s. Was simply incredible.
It's Alrosa 15 years to the minute as I'm watching this. Saw Crowbar opening for Pantera in 1994 in Helsinki.

The show Kirk is talking about with the little snowflakes was at the American Theatre in St Louis Missouri I was at that show I had those little styrofoam snowflakes in my scalp, my shoes in my pockets, somehow that stuff even managed to get in my shorts I had on!

Worth an i was so yoing i set up atcthe bar an he pulled out a few shots of black tooth grin an it wasnt a Metal Show an my first shot ever was poured by Dimebag best memory i have of him. I met him last week in Providence RI. Crowbar played with Killswitch Engage and he was walking out of a bar with his wife. Called out his name and he stopped and walked over and talked like we knew eachother for years
I parked my XXL & JSX heads & went back to gigging with my 1998 Solid state Crate head. Simply less work & still get a great tone from it, and 20 years later its proved reliable & I can carry it almost with a pinky. 60 rms of Pure Power lol Sounds good,its all that matters

It's so true what he says about those vintage bands. I love music from past (Peter Greens Fleedwood, Lizzy, Priest and million other bands), but i don't feel anything when i'm hearig their songs. Just no soul....

Man he was not fucking shot 6 times... Vinnie did an interview about what happened... He even spoke to his brother before he died, they have a tattoo on the underside of the arm, they called it a reset button, if something was too bogus or fucked up they were to press it together to reset the situation
Vinnie said he came to darrell's side and his brother said to vinnie reset bro and then he died...
The online stories are mixing false information with here say, saying he was shot twice in the head then three in the chest and then again point blank third time in the head...... That would totally negate the reason for Bray coming on stage to assist in CPR...
I remember this horrible day like yesterday, was offered to go to the show in Ohio with my bud, and drive from Weatherford Tx to the venue, but i declined because of work the next day....a gut feeling told me to not go, i usually listen to this feeling...
I listened on the radio instead....
That was also a dreaded moment...hearing them Rip into the first song for only moments what it seemed like, before what sounded like just a couple firecrackers before the radio DJ dangerous darren going to a technical difficulty then silence.... Like no music, no advertisements or commercials, nothing nadda

6wm Yeah that's the same thing Vinnie has said in a few interviews that that was the last thing he said to him "van halen" which for them meant to rock the house and go nuts, or something like that. I know Vinnie did have a tattoo of a reset button but I never heard that story.

I didn’t know Kirk knew dimebag Darrell and used Randall amplifiers because of him! Everyone that went seperate routes in life found different projects. And now there’s news about the whole thing. My dad in 1981 was randomly shot 5 times in situation that he had nothing to do with luckily for me and my late mother my dad survived but, I swear to all of you it changed my dad so gun violence is something I have had to live with. Vinnie passed away around a year ago and I know deep down inside he died of a broken heart because of the loss of his brother....I truly hate it for Dime, Vince, and their family I sorta know how it hurts and it just don't make sense. while Kirk is right, it was Nathan Gale who killed dime not Phil. i cant help but think of when i saw Superjoint ritual at jaxx in springfield in 02 or 03 and inbetween songs some dude in the front said something about pantera to Phil and phil went on a rant about how dime and vinny were only in for the money and they were assholes. I'm here because i love to play music for you all. and after the show i went up to phil and said hey if dime and vinny are only in it for the money why are they sitting at home and you're here making money with superjoint? and he didnt say anything back he mumbled under his breath and walked away from me. So from that moment on i had lost respect for phil. all these younger kids who only knew dime and pantera after the fact will defend Phil, but Phil could have gotten his back fixed sooner and got off the dope but he chose not to because he wanted to run 3 and 4 projects at once. Pjil broke up pantera by himself. while i've gotten over phils arrogance over the years i still say if Phil had of gotten his act together that crazy asshole would never have shot dime because pantera could have gotten back together.

HoosierMF and if you read any interview at all you will hear dime and vinie both say Phil kept going out doing his own projects and didnt even record far beyond driven i think it was in the studio the whole band rex vinnie and dime recorded all of it and had to send it to phil in LA because phil wouldnt come to the studio...thats being arrogant. Phil knew he had back problems and needed surgery and kept drinking it away causing him to be that arrogant douchbag he once was. yes i understand they are human people get sick of each other but you gotta go take care of yourself and get better to keep the machine going. he did none of those things he kept doing these side projects to stay on the road and tour that is being arrogant. vinnie and dime were sitting at home waiting on phil to get his act together and never did so they made damageplan. Vinnie was never the arrogant one he was the nicest guy in the world when i met him around the same time i've met phil a few times over the years and everytime was a bad experience except the last time and that was after dimes death so maybe you had a different experience with them personally but i got the asshole phil and that has stuck in my mind for years and i remain solid on my point of if Phil had of done what he was suppose to do and got better i still feel like they would have gotten back together eventually. and maybe vinnie was and remains to be closed off cause he lost a brother and all the rumors swirled back to phil and i'm sure if you lost a brother or sister to murder because someone close to you talked enough shit to make a crazy asshole kill your family member you would hold a grudge against that person to.
@@Hallowedpoint85 Phil mentioned that after is overdose, he fell into depression and isolated himself for the fear that his band would judge him, it was his mistake that he made to not get that surgery and unfortunately the drug use to manage that pain caused it. What killed pantera was a combination of everyone. Can't place blame on only one person. Also what jump started the break up was the 9/11 attacks that killed their tour leading to the break up.
