- In this video I walk you through my process on how I make a herringbone back for a custom farmhouse sign. All of this is done using my OMtech laser.
The technique that I use to make the thick lines for the herringbone is called defocusing and I have a video in my channel dedicated to the technique.

I may be buying my first ever laser.... and this info is priceless. Thank you sir !
You’re welcome! What laser are you looking at?
Thanks for posting this! Looks great and you explain everything so well!
My 80w CO2 will be here in 2 days so I've watched all of your videos. Will be doing a lot of the upgrades (already bought more stuff for that). I already have 2 CNC machines but excited about what can be done with laser. I like this technique of the sign. I make plenty of signs on CNC, but stuff like this is difficult ... until now. Great design and video! - Marshall CNC & Woodworking (also on RUclips).
What font did you use? if you dont mind me asking. Awesome videos man, keep up the great work.
Elegant work!
Thank you!
Awesome man! Thank you.
great video.. thank you for the tutorials...
Did you design the back from scratch or did you have a cut file loaded in lightburn?
Hey @Bearded Build Co,
thats a very usefull footage and the end result looks awesome! But, can you tell me, what's the name of the font you actually use for the sign??
Greetings from germany
great!
What thickness MDF are you using ?
Thanks.
You’re welcome!
Did you do the frame on the laser too? ❤❤
So! I want to start, which of the machine would be appropriate? I’m overwhelmed, I have knowledge about craft and working with wood! But looking to see what it’s my best option it’s kinda confusing
What are you making?
@@BeardedBuildsCo My plan is to do personal sign! I don’t have clear what will do my top priority! But I make a lots resin gift and I use wood for it! Plus I have my natural soap that I don’t know YET how to I will be combining it, and the most important project Bc it’s a personal long term project im doing a tiny house in the mountains soo I have been accumulating things I want to do and a lots of them (“for what I have been seeing “ on my research of lasers printer)can help me to simplify it so as you can see it’s a lots of unclear project 🤣😂 but I want to buy something isn’t too simple that I will grow out of it or something will be too advanced like this sweet baby Jesus machine
What lense are you using? I believe they come standard with 1.5”. Did you leave it stock or upgrade to a different one. Also, did you add a different air assist?
The lens coming stock on almost all the omtech machines now is a 2” lens. That is what I am using.
hi great video are you sharing the files ??? as would like to give it a go on my laser did you just buy the frame or did you make that as well ??
I love it! Im interested in the CO2 laser & lightburn. Enjoying the content. Did you make that spray paint can wall holder?
Thanks! I am an omtech affiliate, so let me know how I can help in your laser selection. I did not make the spray paint holder it from a file on Etsy:

Enjoy watching your channel and learning. Do you sell files?
Thanks! I have been toying with the idea of selling files but haven’t yet. Most of my stuff is custom for the customer. Are there specific things you are looking for?
@@BeardedBuildsCo I like the template for the herringbone you made and the way you use negative material to line up cuts on sign. I’m still learning the ins and out of lightburn and unfortunately my LB camera is not working as advertised so I’ve been waisting lots of material trying to make cuts and line things up for a sign I’m trying to make for you kids. So seeing how you set up everything in LB would a big help for me moving forward.
Hey man love your channel. Which laser machine are you using?
Personally I have three omtech lasers. 60w and 100w Co2 and a 30w fiber.
How thick was the material you used for the letters?
1/8” Baltic birch
@@BeardedBuildsCo ok 2nd question how think can you cut with the 60w. Like mdf or pine. Im going to order one soon
@@CJICreations 1/4” or less is the expectation you should have.
What’s the process for your frames?
Sometimes I will use rabbits and 45 joints gluing it all together with the help of pin nails. Other times I’ll just butt joint everything with glue and brad nails right to the backer. Here is a video where I butt everything together.

I recommend checking out these plans. I am a woodglut customer and I am very happy with the plans they offer
