My mom was arrested at 9mths pregnant (w me😊) while marching w MLK in front of a restaurant in TN which didn’t allow Blacks to dine inside. This was her VERY favorite Elvis song, followed by In The Ghetto & then Walk A Mile In My Shoes. All 3 were played often and early in our home lol Not merely songs, but rather mantras… models by which my parents raised myself and my siblings in a too slowly evolving South. How incredibly blessed we were!!! Elvis had a few nerves that night- defying his creeper of a ‘manager’ to perform the song, a social justice song. He flips a couple of the final lines which in the studio are ‘And while I can think, while I can talk While I can stand, while I can walk…’ And what a beautiful jumble it was- bc we know it was indeed LIVE! No lip synching going on here! The consummate performer, Elvis ‘left it all on the field’ that night. If you listen to the *very* end, you’ll hear a winded Elvis manage ‘Thank you… and good night.’ The song was truly incredibly important to him. The man and his voice were both painfully beautiful- & silenced far far too soon😔 Thank you for reacting to this💚 If you check out Walk A Mile In My Shoes… look for the live with story version! Stay safe & love much💖
This song was written for Elvis as a tribute to Martin Luther King. Elvis was CRUSHED when MLK was assasinated. He walked off the stage after the prerformance and cried like a baby.
This performance left Elvis so drained, he barely made it back stage before he collapsed on the floor, in the fetal position, and cried himself dry.....
I've read that during the performance his long time backup singers were Weeping, because they knew how much he meant every word. I've also read that after the performance, after he walked off stage/set he collapsed, crying. Considering he never performed this song again, I believe both stories. RIP Mr. Presley, you are missed.
Man I've been a fan of his for all my life on 60 years old now and I'm in tears because this is Elvis I really love the man he had a unique gift man his presence his soul is performance is talent you know his heart was deep he was flawed every human is but God made a special creature out of this man
1968 was a pivotal year in U.S. history. Elvis is expressing the soul of the nation in this song. We'd lost MLK & Bobby Kennedy to assassination; it was one of the deadliest years in Vietnam; there were protests & violence across the country; it felt like all was lost.
This was written specifically for Elvis to convey his thoughts and feelings at that time in America. People really need to stop ending the videos before they actually end.
The suit: immaculate The hair: flawless The swag: legendary The lyrics: relevant 50 years later The vocals: unreplicated The stage presence: people stunned into silence 50 years later. A perfect original performance that could not have been improved in any way. A true 10 out of 10.
It also encompassed Robert Kennedy's assassination & everything going on @ time; producer-director Steve Binder & Elvis had a long discussion about all of this & Binder asked Walter Earl Brown to compose something referencing the times & Elvis' thoughts, basing it loosely on King's speech. The red tie was for the blood shed in Vietnam.
This was the final song and scene of Elvis' TV Christmas Special which was presented LIVE to the TV audience. This is the song that Elvis wanted to close the show with. His manager yelled, cursed and threatened to fine Elvis if he dared sing this song. Elvis sang this song just like he wanted to. The network Fined his manager!
Elvis is one of the best singers that has ever lived. He was also a fabulous entertainer. There is a reason he is called "The King". He had a great voice & could sing anything whether it was ballads, gospel or rock. This song "If I Can Dream" was a tribute to Martin Luther King after his assassination.
This song was written especially for Elvis's Comeback Special. YES, the song was written about Martin Luther King Jr, also the assassination of Robert Kennedy and the Vietnam War and all the blood that was shed. The lives lost.
Elvis was born and raised in Tupelo Mississippi in the hood, he's daddy went to prison for making an 8 dollar check into an 18 dollar check. And Elvis really loved his momma.
After my mama died when I was 5 years old, I would hang out in my uncle’s room playing the 45 rpm record of this song for hours. I would sing along with Elvis with all the energy and passion as he did. This was one of two songs that helped me deal with the emotions that a very young child doesn’t know how to cope with, but music has been my coping method for the rest of my life. I really enjoyed your reaction to this song @ABtheKreator. ❤️ Thank you for doing it.
No one will ever come close to this man’s greatness 💕💕Elvis had everything and more and just saying how beautiful was he oh my goodness 💕💕 Brilliant reaction, hello from Australia.
All those times of replaying the ending and you never let it go to the very end!! The part you missed was Elvis saying “Thank you. Good night”. He is totally breathless because he put everything he had into that delivery. 😊😊
That always annoys me as well lol. After Elvis has just given everyone the performance of a life time, how courtious he is just saying "Thank you. Goodnight" is the cherry on top. I wish everyone stayed for that bit.
I have always marveled at that and I do always mention it in the comments afterwards. I would say about one in every four reactors has that itchy trigger finger and just can't give it that extra 3 seconds, laugh. To me, it's kind of the original mic drop moment!
I love this song. It was written as a tribute to both MLK and Robert Kennedy after they were assassinated. When it was presented to Elvis he wanted to do it on the Special as the closing song. Colonel Parker said it wasn't his kind of song. Thank God that Elvis did not listen to him. It is one of his most powerful performances! ❤️
You mentioned the Christmas show so I’m going to assume you’ve seen the movie. Austin Butler did an amazing job but nobody can capture his passion regardless of the song. The impressionists have turned him into a caricature it and I really enjoy watching people discover the real thing.
It's one of my absolute favorites of his. I love his passion and the reasons behind why he did it. His manager didn't want him to do this, and still, he did it to honor MLK. ❤
If I can dream is my most favorite song of Elvis. Elvis had many many great songs, but in my honest opnion this song was the greatest song, the best, the most moving one, the most beautiful and emotional one.
Everything in this performance has a purpose. The song itself was written by Earl Brown, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech I Have a Dream. The song was written with Elvis in mind & it’s a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Brown was aware of Elvis love for Dr. King. He also knew that Elvis was devastated by the news of Dr. King’s assassination (just 9 miles away from Graceland, Elvis‘s home). The white suit was also worn to accompany the song’s dream for better days. At the time, the conflict in Vietnam was heart wrenching. In remembrance, of the lives lost during the Vietnam war. The burgundy colored scarf Elvis wore around his neck was for them.
I've watched pretty much every Elvis RUclips reaction the past 4 yrs but this reaction was by far the best. hilarious, emotional, entertaining, groovy etc it had it all. You weren't bad yourself sir.
I love watching people's reaction to this video, all these decades later. This song was written for Elvis to perform at the '68 comeback special, in response to the recent assassination of MLK, Jr. and his I Have a Dream speech during the march on Washington. I wish they would explain that fact before or after your first exposure to this heartfelt performance! It was the final song, recorded earlier but played at the end of the comeback special. (I know people wonder what he was coming back from. Well, he was drafted into the army and rather than letting someone get him "out of it" he said it was his duty to serve, that he is no better than anyone else. Also, his murderer, oh I mean manager (who took 50% and had a huge gambling problem) had him under contract to make x # of movies, which Elvis detested doing. He had to finally record it by himself with no one else around late at night, after many attempts with the others. It was written right after Bobby Kennedy died, and the country was left hopeless. MLK had just died too. It was in memory of them both. I remember that sad year like yesterday. He never did it in concert. It was a song that remained in '68.

There has never been a more emotional performance with that much passion. There has never been a song performed more timely given that year-1968-the most turbulent year in the most turbulent decade.

@@douglasainsworth2448 Thx for your reply. Parker was opposed to everything if it didn't mean bringing in more money. Both hope and heartbreak in one song, I made my son listen to this when he was studying the civil rights movement in history.

I came across this video again and I have to say; Elvis would love seeing this reaction. Hope he can. It would be everything.
Elvis did this song behind his managers back basically... Parker didn't want this done... Elvis did.. Thank you Elvis.
