  • If like me, the Tesla Model 3 SR+ is really the only option in getting into the Tesla world, do I recommend this car after a year of ownership in Summer, fall, WINTER, and spring condition.

    Overview:
    1:44 - Performance:
    0-60mph in 5.3 seconds
    Passing cars is a breeze
    Great handling
    2:47 - Safety:
The Model 3 is the safest car ever tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
Front Frunk allows to take more of the impact and avoid pushing the engine into the cabin
The battery pack being at the bottom of the car makes it the center of gravity very low which make it very unlikely the car would rollover.
    5:18 - Software:
    Updates
Here is what was added in just the 1 year I own the car:
Sentry Mode Viewer with multiple updates
Acceleration boost… That’s right, my car got faster since I first own it
Range boots, again, yes it has more EPA range than when I first bought 354km to 402km
Self Driving Update, more on this later…
Text messages from your phone, yes this should have come with the car already but the point is if we want something, they can add it!
    RUclips
    Netflix
Left and Right pillar cameras when viewing back camera
    Games games and more game
    Mobile App Features
    Summon
    7:52 - Range:
402km enough in Canada where we have 4 seasons?
The short answer is most likely for most of you
If you can afford the long-range, well, first you would be watching this review, so now your asking can I live with a 402KM EPA range? The answer is most likely.
I love to travel to different cottages in the summer and I’ve had no issues ever reaching one.
    9:26 - Charging:
This is NO LONGER a reason NOT to buy a Tesla
Every single day new Supercharging station open
Road trips to almost anywhere south is a nonissue
    13:02 - Maintenance:
    Winter Tires
    Windshield Washer, that’s it
    15:24 - Full Self Driving:
Autopark: both parallel and perpendicular spaces.
Navigate on Autopilot: automatic driving from highway on-ramp to off-ramp including interchanges and overtaking slower cars.
Summon and smart summon: “Your parked car will come find you anywhere in a parking lot. Really.”
Recognize and respond to traffic lights and stop signs.
Coming later in 2020, Automatic driving on city streets.
    20:19 - Winter:
Now I am going to start by saying, I go from Garage to garage and I know not everyone is able to have that.
But for me this makes my range be significantly less affected. When your Tesla’s battery gets cold you range just goes down. It’s how it is so keeping the battery in a warm location will help a tone.
On average most people lose around 30% range on normal winter days and on extreme cold and snowy day (which if you think about is a really small amount a days a year) you could lose 40 to some have said 50%.
I’ve never had that much of a range loss, I pre-heat the battery before I leave by charging the last 5% (85% to 90%) right before I leave in the morning and that helps with both Regen and range loss.
On the worst days when I made a trip to Ogdensburg in the United state to get an Amazon package I was caught in a winter storm and ended up losing around 35% range. My car was parked in a garage before I left.
I don’t do a lot of road trips in the winter, so this is no where near a deal breaker for me. If you commute more then 200km per day on a regular basis then I would maybe start to think and wait and save up to be able to afford the Long Range model which has 518km. That extra 106km might be a must for you.
    25:01 - The Bad:
I am going to start that none of the following things make me not recommend this car to anyone. But there are a few things I would like Tesla to fix for any future customer.
A heat pump that is now coming with the Model Y to keep the battery warm in cold condition to help with both range and Regen breaking
As I said nothing major here and I just LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS CAR, THIS PRODUCT, THIS AMAZING PIECE OF MACHINE.
    27:12 - Final Thoughts:
This is not only the best car I’ve ever own it’s my favorite product I’ve ever own. I was never a real car guy. It all changed with my Model 3 Standard Range Plus!
Each referral now also gives me a chance to win a Founders Series Model Y or Roadster supercar.

I commute the same distance (Canada) with my 2020 model 3 sr and would suggest the LR. When the temp drops below -5c range is decreased by 1/2. I usually end up driving my petrol car during winter commutes and Tesla in the milder months (March - Nov)

Great review! So looking forward to taking delivery of my Model Y in November 2020. I also live in Southern Ontario and I hear what you're saying about "Range is king" because in Winter, I think your range is reduced by 30-40%. Also, there is no question I will be purchasing snow tires. Gotta have them. But like you, my Model Y would be parked inside a garage most of the time. So, hopefully, range loss won't be as bad. Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts on your Model 3 SR+.

    • @TeslaCanadianDad
      @TeslaCanadianDad  3 года назад +1

Stephen Rudberg thank you so much for the kind words. You must be so exited and time must feel so slow for you. I only had to wait 4 weeks for my M3 after I bought it so I can only image the long wait for your Y. Let me know you thought when you get it. Btw garage to garage you won’t come close to losing 40% range in the winters unless you go for a road trip.

    • @smr32061

@@TeslaCanadianDad , thanks. Yes. The waiting is very hard. I ordered the car in mid-July thinking it would take 6 weeks or longer but they had the car available in 2 weeks! Unfortunately inhad to decline as it was too early since i still have a Lease on another vehicle till December but came to an understanding with my wife I would get the car in November. this looks better! I did a route planner and it added 7 hours to my trip, just tried it now and only 2 hours 42 minutes… they need to improve the range but that is much better than I thought. One of the biggest issues is going to be the inconveniences, if you are taking the family on a long trip you want to go as far as you can without stopping. Having stops every 2-hours is not going to work, especially early in the day.
Get on the road get them to doze off and drive 5 hours, 30-minute stop then drive the rest of the way to your 1st hotel or whatever. If they get the range up to 800-1,000kms that would be much better…
My Honda CRV gets me through an 8-hour trip for about 3 minutes of stopping for gas, so the stops would also need to be close to other amenities that are walkable within 10 minutes but at least it is becoming more realistic

@@TeslaCanadianDad Many thanks Michel. Once a month I drive to Georgetown ON, a distance of 423km on Hwy 7 and 407 at an average speed of 94km/hr so I have been wondering what is your experience of driving on the 416 or Queensway at 120km/hr and energy usage. Say in Spring. Also do you experience a lot of heat through the glass roof.

    • @TeslaCanadianDad
      @TeslaCanadianDad  3 года назад

I have to ask. Where did you get Michel? Lol. As for your question, the faster you go in an EV the more energy you use unlike gasoline cars. You won’t get there on one charge going 120km/hr unless you get the long range. But a quick stop in either Belleville or Kingston to top you up and get a coffee shouldn’t be longer than a 20 min stop.

    "North might be a problem"
As someone in northern Alberta... yes.
This is my concern. "range anxiety" is a major problem when there is literally nothing for many kms where you could run out... Not even cell coverage sometimes.
If I can pull off buying a house (so I can get a Tesla charger installed), then I might go ahead and lease a M3 as a daily/summer driver and keep my truck for long road trips/winter.
I "recharged" my truck last night, in less than 10 min I got nearly 800km range. Even in winter that's still between 725 and 750 per "charge".

The 19 and 20" wheels lower your range over the 18" wheels because of two reasons: (1) Tires are performance summer only and provide more traction and will wear out faster. (2) Larger wheels are heavier and likely slightly less aerodynamic in order to appear more asthetically pleasing.
If you get the performance model with 20" wheels, you will likely only be able to downsize to 19" for winter because of larger breaks.
It should also be noted that the 18" tires are all season and low rolling resistance for a quiet ride and better EV efficiency.

Good review and very insightful. Only thing I don't agree with is that FSD would be worth over $200 per month or $10k when bought outright. All the hardware is there. And the software should be scalable. Hardly anyone gets it now, whereas if it were $3,500, many more would get it. That would probably result in more total revenue and more cars contributing to the learning curve.

    First class video, thanks.
I have the LR, but this was a really useful bits of information in there, here are some of my thoughts to add.
    1) Range anxiety is not the problem, it is charging payment/charging facility problem. In the UK we don't have many Tesla superchargers, so a road trip requires you to use non-tesla chargers - and the payment system here is an utter shit-show - you require some 20 apps/key-fobs to use them all, you need 10 minutes to work out how to use them - then they don't work. Non-Tesla chargers are unreliable, not-maintained utter stupid payment systems and very expensive. Ionity here costs twice that of petrol (gas) per mile, compare that with my home electric which is just 10% of the cost of petrol (gas)/mile.
    2) Squeaks - not experience that, in fact my wife asked me about a small noise, I said it was the book on her lap rubbing on the dash board. Mine is really well put together, did I get lucky, don't know - but Tesla on the model 3 are getting it right on fit and finish - no sounds at all from the fit and finish.
    3) You did say, and I agree, if you don't like a Tesla or think it is not right for you - just drive it. I was going to get the e-Nero, but then I test drove the Tesla, and it broke me. What i would say is if you cannot afford it (yes it is expensive), don't drive one - it will destroy you.

@@TeslaCanadianDad Tesla is doing most of its expansion in China since this where its sales have taken off. There are some chargers being built at this time but the map is fairly static at this time. Like most EV drivers I charge at home except for a couple of trips a year (holiday). For example, in 3 weeks I will travel to the east of UK, and there are no super-chargers in the entire area and a small number of Tesla destination chargers that are restricted as patrons of the service provider.

Tks for the Cdn perspective. But Imho if you’re not going to spring for the higher models in a colder climate, I wouldn’t bother with a Tesla for a daily. The way I see it, Model 3 Performance is the same price as a BMW 340 but you get even better performance than an M3 and you save $5000 a year on gas… so it’s still a tremendous value. You also have to differentiate between Auto Pilot (a lot of manufacturers have that perfected) and Full Self Driving, which is extremely sketchy. Totally agree with the wheels though, I wish there was a smaller wheel choice for Performance models.

Mina Hanna from what I’ve heard your winters a more mild then us.can be pretty cold here on some days. Like -35 on some bad days. As for parking outside it will affect your range for sure. i only lose 20% range because i park inside both at work and home but some people lose close to 40% on really cold days because they park outside. Either way alway setup pre-heat for 15 minutes before you leave in the morning in winter season using an app like Stats (apple and android) helps a tone to reduce range loss.

Back to your question, would I buy the Y for extra storage for myself no, like you I like the 3 more. Do I intend to get the Y for my wife down the road yes, she wants more of an SUV, less for extra space and just be bigger on the road. She’s driving a tiny car right now and is tired of feeling small on the road. Silly reason I know but she hey. That’s her reason for wanting a bigger car. Or and her car is brutal in the winter so for her the more weight the better (more traction).

I personally have plans to keep it for as many years as I can and purchased FSD on it so leasing wouldn’t be a smart inversement IMO. However if you were thinking short term and no FSD it would make sense. Also leasing wasn’t even an option here in Canada when I purchased my M3. 👍

      Dang are they something else.
Probably going to get her in a 3SR+. I did the math on cost of ownership and it’s a no brainer. She can get hers for about $250 more per month than the paid off Mazda she’s burning a ton of gas in now.
Mostly thanks to our credit union (Vancity) that has a wicked EV loan. 3.45% for 10y, no penalties for early payments (though at that price, I’m better off investing than paying down early).
So excited for Friday when we pick up Luna the Electric Moonbeast ⚡️ (MSM + Inductions).

Quality is not all that . When you buy a new car and the paint is trash the only infotainment screen cuts out at 70 mph and it leaks in the trunk area. That says alot about quality control.
