2021 Model 3 Long Range vs. Standard Range Plus (RWD) - Is the LR Worth the Upgrade?

    Scan every Tesla forum and you'll find several threads about "Model 3 LR or SR+" with prospective owners deliberating this difficult decision. If they cost the same, the Long Range is probably a no brainer, but they don't cost the same. So, the question is: Is the Model 3 Long Range worth the upgrade? I'm here to compare the two and make the decision easier for you. FYI, both cars used in this test were 2021 model vehicles, and as we know Tesla prices and features change every week, so hopefully this video stays relevant through 2022!
    Acceleration:
    - Long Range does 0-60 in 4.2 seconds vs. Standard Range Plus in 5.3 seconds. And NOW all we get is the Model 3 RWD which does 0-60 in 5.8 seconds, a big power gap there
    Range
    - SR+ is 267 miles (with 19" wheels) vs. LR at 334 miles. Again, no contest here
    All-Weather Driving
    - Long Range AWD for the win!
    Handling
    - Sure, the Long Range has AWD for better grip and driving in rain/snow, BUT that adds 400 pounds to the weight. Yes, you read that right! The extra motor plus larger battery weighs OVER 400 pounds more than the Standard Range Plus model
    - Given this, I give the SR+ (RWD) model the edge in handling, it simply feels nimbler and more responsive
    - Let me put it another way: The Model 3 SR+/RWD is a rear engine, RWD car. Sound familiar? (hint: Porsche 911/Carrera)
    Weight (source: Tesla website)
    - Standard Range Plus (RWD): 3,600 pounds
    - RWD: 3,880 pounds
    - Long Range, Dual Motor (AWD): 4,065 pounds
    Regenerative Braking
    - The Long Range model has more aggressive regen than the SR+/RWD model/ Why?
    - You've got TWO motors doing the regen = more regen
    - SR+/RWD model has limited regen capability, not just because there is one motor, but because the single motor can't be tuned for maximum regen, otherwise the strong decelerative forces could upset the handling balance/stability of the car
    Audio
    - Long Range has premium audio, which sounds much better (though not amazing)
    Other stuff
    - Long Range charges faster - charges up to 250 KW (SR+/RWD charges up to 175KW)
    - Heated steering wheel standard on LR; not even offered on the SR+/RWD
    - Heated rear seats included on LR; a $300 upgrade on the SR+/RWD
    - Long Range comes with floormats (SR+/RWD does not!)
    - Long Range has additional LED interior lighting
    - In the Long Range model you hear more "whirring" from the electric motors, because you have one right in front of you. The SR+/RWD model, with its motor located far in the rear, you can only hear on hard acceleration. The car is otherwise totally silent
    Cost
    - With just a $6,000 difference between the two models (as of December 23rd, 2021), I think the choice is clear: Upgrade to the Long Range! So worth it, even though I've decided to keep my SR+ (I love the handling too much to give it up - best handling Tesla ever!)

    I’d be willing to bet that nobody in the entire world ever got the LR and had buyer’s remorse because they didn’t get the SR instead.

      Give it a few years and they will...when the RWD will exceed the range of the LR due to LR's NCA battery degradation.

      @@blueeyes75115 Tesla's advertisement is false. M3 LR and Performance both degrade rapidly on the 1st year. After that, you won't see the range really decreasing. So true ranges of LR and Performance are 300 and 270 miles respectively at full charge. M3 Performance has only 270miles because of 20 inch wheels.

      I ordered a rwd, its be ready im 2 to 3 months. Then found a used awd 2022 , 3k miles. I am sure I would never want to own a rwd...

      I have driven both. not that much but both a few hundred miles each. RWD is not slow by any means, but how he described the LR power being there all the time with the slightest tap of the pedal is very accurate.

    I believe the weight difference now with the latest RWD is about 150lbs due to the newer/bigger LFP battery. With that said, I decided to change my order to LR. Definitely not because of the weight difference. It was mainly for the performance, AWD, premium sounds, fog lights, additional interior light, faster charging capability, and last but not least, the floor mats (LOL!). Oh, and the option to improve acceleration down the road through the boost option. I would’ve kept the RWD if it had the upgraded sound system along with some of the other missing features…

      You make some great points. Weight difference between LR and RWD is 172 pounds per Tesla website. Not a big difference, BUT that 172 pounds is over the front wheels, all in the nose of the car. But like you said, thats probably not a compelling reason to not buy the LR, it’s the cost. You do get so much more for the extra money. Like you, I think the ability to get acceleration boost is important, and the extra range, power and better audio are fantastic upgrades as well.

      Appreciate the comment Rich! Tesla fan boys indeed get defensive if you criticize anything about their car! And they themselves don't want to admit certain things aren't perfect. I'm a realist. Teslas are amazing but there are many things I don't like, and no one car does it all. But Tesla comes the closest IMO.

      Sure 6k for the extra is negligible but for me in Canada after 60 k I lose my 8,000 dollar incentive from the government. So that extra for the LR is actually way more. I'm dancing from foot to foot waiting for my 2022 SR. With the LFP batteries in 6 years I will have more range than the LR due to 4 % annual battery degradation on the LR. The 3 plus wins in overtime.

    One of the best videos I have seen comparing the two models 3.
    Makes me happy that I have chosen the LR, for all the reasons you have talked in your video. I was more interested on the range and the all wheel drive, plus the regen was on my mind too.
    And with the price difference, it was a no brainer.
    I should be getting mine this month, can't wait.
    How far is your drive to LA? From where are you driving, it looks like a beautiful drive.

    The SR+ is MIC supplying the UK market currently , has the new DPF battery and can be charged to 100% everyday if needed improving the range to 220 miles real world. The LR is only about 50 miles better . The DPF battery is claimed to be good for 3000 charge cycles & 1m miles. battery life. The premium price between the SR+ and the LR in the UK is £7k ($9500 US) [ Feb 2022 ]. For my needs the SR+ is more than I need. I can get the colour I prefer , get a tow hitch and PPF to protect the paintwork. I’m going for my second test drive on Tuesday, to make the final decision.
    I only drive about 8k miles a year, 95% within 50 miles of home. Great video, very honest. Thank you

    I have a BMW with a Harman Kardon system and it’s great but the LR is WAY better, like leaps and bounds better when it comes to sound quality.
    I’ve also had other cars with Harman Kardon sound systems that sound better than my BMW but none of the compared to the sound system in the LR Tesla. 👍🏻

    I have heard one other video that covers that added weight up front. i'm glad you mention it too. So you are still set with the M3SR? i just wish they'd improve it's range. its the only one thats remotely affordable for us.

      Yep 6 months later and I’m still loving my Model 3 SR+. I’ve adjusted to the range and charging frequently. Best handling balance of any Tesla, it’s fantastic.

    I wanted the LR but after factoring in taxes and fees and the red paint, it was nearly 60k. I prefer the SR+ for now since I work from home and figure I'll trade up in four years once the battery tech advances.

      You are absolutely correct. Destination charge, tax, title, fees puts the LR at $60K, assuming custom paint and/or 19” wheel upgrade. Sadly, SR+ still totals nearly $54K, but $6K is $6K. I’m with you; if the only reason a person wants to upgrade to LR is range (that’s the situation I’m in), wait a few years for a higher range RWD model to come out.
      I’m foolishly holding out hope that in 4 years Tesla will say “Pay us $5K and we’ll install a 400 mile range battery in your SR+”. That’s really all I’m after. Then the SR+ would be perfection.

      BTW, when I took delivery of my SR+ in August 2021 my total price paid was $46,700. That included a $1500 California EV rebate. I feel like I won the lottery at that price. At that price, the difference between the SR+ and LR+ was over $10K, it was an easy decision for me. It’s crazy to me that the same car I bought 6 months ago is now half a second slower 0-60 and costs over $7K more than I paid! But the car market in general is crazy, so it’s not that unusual really.

      latest update SR has 60kwh battery which is a nice 10% bump in usable capacity. Likely gets you over 200 miles at motorway/highway speeds which my current (2020) SR+ doesn’t quite. From my experience I do only a few trips that need that range, but with the slightly larger battery they wouldn’t need stops. So I think the new SR is great value for money. In the UK its £6k more for the LR

      @@MrKlawUK That's a great point! My 2021 SR+ gets 180 miles actual highway range and that's if you charge to 100% and run it to 1%. 200+ miles actual range is a big improvement, didn't realize the new battery had so much "real world" range improvement.

    Placed an order for the lr model 3 but after some thinking I realized the biggest features the lr offers like awd, faster 0-60 and longer distance are things I don’t really need for my type of driving , so I switched to the rwd. Hopefully down the road I don’t regret not going with the long range model.

      Well Andy, maybe this will help you feel better. As of today, the cost difference between the RWD and LR is now $7,500; with tax figured in its $8K+. At the time I shot my video the difference was only $6K. So, you saved a good amount of money going with the RWD.
      Also, the RWD has an LFP battery, new technology. You can charge it to 100% every day and get the full 272 miles of range. The LR is still recommended to charge to 80% daily, or 267 miles. So, the RWD model basically has the same functional range, day to day. In the rare case you road trip the LR and charge it to 100%, obviously it will go farther.

    Great review I think the current RWD comes with LFP batteries and it allows charging to 100% daily. However the LR it's still recommended to charge to 80% or 90%. So the range becomes less comparing the two. And in the long term it looks like LFP degradation is much lower than LR batteries. Also Tesla added the heated steering and back seats standard to the RWD. Unfortunately here in Canada the difference is around $10,000 which makes it really expensive.

      Agree 100%, the LFP battery pack is a game changer as far as usable range, as well as battery degradation over time. The minuses are slower 0-60 and 200 extra pounds of weight, which most people probably don’t care about. The RWD is a compelling buy at $10,000 savings, absolutely.

      It is now a $15K CAD difference. I just don't think that the LR Dual Motor is a good value anymore in Canada. Acceleration is the only thing that worries me when comparing the two, but many people that I have spoken to have said that the difference is minor. I guess that I will have to see for myself when I test drive the RWD.

      Wow, didn’t even notice they raised LR price again, twice within 30 days! At a $9K difference I think I’d have to go RWD, if I were a buyer right now. When I bought my SR+ the difference was $10K and I chose the SR+ easily. The RWD with the LFP battery addresses my main concern with the SR+, range, with 272 miles and the ability to charge to 100% daily.

    I would stick to the SR+ to retain the advantage of the LFP battery chemistry. (Safer, longer battery life, flexible charging without battery degradation)

    I have had all models, a 2019 LR awd, a 2020 performance and i now have a 21 sr+ from china with LFP. The sr+ is the way to go if you dont drive that much. And the fact that you can charge the LFP to 100% makes it even better!

      @@marclovescars true, but i care more about the fact that the effective range is closer to the Long Range, as i used to charge the Long Range to 80% daily, so i don't really feel a difference in range. All teslas are great, but they really improved the 2021 model 3 🚀👍

    I don't know if you mentioned this in the video, but is there a difference in the charge time between the long range and the standard range?

      Long range charges at a much higher speed (up to 250KW vs SR+ max of 175KW). But, LR has a bigger battery to charge so I think the elapsed time to charge each from empty to full is similar. But if you charged them both for 10 mins the LR would add significantly more miles.

    I’m conflicted because the sr+ fits my needs, but I REALLY want the premium audio. The sr+ audio is still good enough right?

      You described the SR+ audio well. "Good enough". I've lived with it for almost a year now, and I'm fine with it. I'm never thinking to myself "Man, the sound is terrible". I think you'll be OK with it. I have no major complaints.
      Having said that, if you immediately jump into a LR you'll notice that it's much better sound quality. But how often will you be jumping between models in real-time? 🙂

      @@marclovescars you’re right. The problem is I test drove the LR first so now I know how great it is. I never should’ve done that 😂. I’ve heard of people upstaging their sr audios too, but I wouldn’t want to mess with the car too much to not affect the warranty.

      @@dopestchannelever Yes, I know many people who have had their SR+ stereo upgraded. Apparently it's easy to do, some speaker covers (according to them) don't even have speakers behind them. I've been told it costs about $1,200 to get close to the LR audio system. Will let you know if I do it, but like you I don't really want someone ripping my new car apart!

      @@dopestchannelever I’m in the exact situation as you. It only takes a simple wiring harness to unlock 4 extra speakers in front. Unfortunately you will be missing 2 rear speakers, a subwoofer, and an extra amp. It is possible to install but most likely more modification than you would like. I can’t decide!

      @@Ashhong1 ughhh I hate that they do not let you upgrade it! I think I’ve decided to stay with the SR+. Because when I looked at the LR it came out to an extra 12k! I don’t think that’s worth it just for the audio upgrade 😩

    If you have the money for the LR sure, however now with the LR being almost 10,000 more, the SR+ is a way better option for what you get and now being able to charge to 100% unlike the LR that still can only be charged up to 80%

      Agree 100%, the RWD is a great value now given that it comes with the LFP battery. On a daily usable range basis it's almost the same as the LR.

    Can anyone tell me the differences of battery degradation over time

      I’ve done some testing, looks roughly like this. Healthy battery, 12.6 volts. After sitting for a week, 12.5 volts. Sitting 2-3 weeks, 12.4 volts, and so on. After a month of sitting my car is at 12.28 volts. It will still start at that voltage. You generally want to keep it above 12.4 or else the battery will degrade and shorten its lifespan. Solution, take it on an extended drive every week or two.

    Thanks for the review!! I'm trading in my 2019 BMW 330i and I'm also conflicted between Model 3s, but the price difference between RWD and AWD is now $7,500. Do you think the AWD is still worth it at that new price gap? Also, do you know how the RWD (SR+) audio compares to stock BMW? The RWD fits 95%, if not more, of my driving needs.

      I owned four 3-series in a row, and the SR+/RWD audio is comparable to the BMW audio, meaning good enough but not great.
      With the $7500 price gap, and given the RWD lets you charge to 100%, getting 272 miles whenever you want it, that's a big benefit of the RWD model. But 0-60 in 5.8 isn't that great. Depends on what is the bigger priority for you. RWD has more neutral handling and comparable day-to-day driving range, AWD is much faster, AWD, much more total range (334 miles if charged to 100%, with the Aero wheels), upgraded stereo, fog lights, interior lighting, heated rear seats, etc. If I had to buy one right now, I would probably go LR, personally. I'm doing long trips in my SR+ and the frequent supercharging is getting really annoying. If you never drive more than 50-100 miles per day though, the RWD is all you need. Hope that helps!

      ​@@marclovescars thank you!! I am driving about 110 one way to the office once a week and could probably make one round trip to the office with a 5 minute charge with the RWD. I do find myself sometimes wishing I would have gotten the harmon/kardon so I might spring for the AWD

      @@juanduran8173 Ah, that's quite a drive. Yes, you could make it in the RWD with a brief supercharger stop, or no stop at all with the LR. If you'll regret not getting the premium audio in your BMW, you might have your decision! It's a much richer audio experience, the premium system, especially if you like bass.

      @@marclovescars In the few minutse between my reply and now I realized I was going to switch my order from RWD to AWD but editing my design is no longer a choice. I'll call them tomorrow to see if I can change it over the phone! If not, losing out on the $250 fee is a small price to pay for longevity of happiness!

    Here's some fun with EU pricing: LR is over 11k EUR more expensive - SR is also only one getting 2k EUR goverment sub, bringing the difference to 13k EUR. Also new LFP models can always Be charged to 100%, range difference is not that much anymore then, vs 80% charge on LR. SR is just awesome value compared to any electric car...

      @@marclovescars Waiting on my (black) SR delivery next month :) Gonna be my first brand new car after 20 years of junk cars! Also here's something with to consider with range: As living in cold nordics, blows my mind that teslabjorn managed to get real world range of 404km (251 miles ~) in norwegian winter with new LFP model! Apparently LFP is much more consistent in cold weather, although might get little bit less range in extreme cold. However, this winter range is just crazy compared to other available EV's. I understand in the US where distances between cities are bigger, extra range might matter, but with 400km range you can drive literally anywhere in southern finland (and probably back too) with single charge, also public charger situation is so good nowadays that charging is truly solved problem. ability to always charge to 100% is a game changer

    Agree the SR+ is so nimble and handles nicely. Lease on my 2019 is up soon….problem is the LFP car replacing it is about 3800 lbs so nearly as heavy as Long Range car.

      You nailed it Nick! LFP car is 200 lbs heavier AND 0-60 is half a second slower. No thanks. At least the RWD LFP car doesn't have a second motor, that's where you really feel the weight, 200 extra pounds on the nose. If I had to buy a Model 3 right now, I'd have to go LR. Which way are you leaning?

      @@nicka2256 Nice! Can’t go wrong with either of those options! Performance model is something I always ponder. Same weight as LR but more power, lowered suspension, summer tires, better brakes, 20” wheels, track mode, etc. Makes 4,000 pounds as agile as it can be. Can’t argue against LR with accel boost though! More comfy and nearly as fast.

      @@nicka2256 Ah bummer, I’m not a fan of all the price increases. Still a solid value though, congrats! A great overall package for the money. While I prefer the toss-able handling of the RWD models, I curse myself at every supercharger stop. LR makes road trips so much easier. And the thought of the acceleration boost is very enticing too.

    Love everything about my Long Range Model 3. The standard plus didn’t suit my needs as the LR did. Love the extra “weight” and the handling is great to me. The speed and acceleration is great as well. Kept the 18 inch tires and the ride is great. Test drove the standard and it wasn’t for me

But the ride difference is. The LR is a better variant. I test drove the performance. That’s nice. But I like the LR as the both of both worlds

    Model 3 SR+ tires will last longer due to the weight and power, especially around corners. That's big for EVs which run through tires quicker than ICE vehicles.

    Also, there is almost NEVER a need to stop for even 30 minutes. if youre ever stopping for that long you are not planning out correctly. Get used to arriving to chargers with like 10%

      Yep I’ve learned this with experience. I arrive with 10% and sometimes bounce after I hit 40-50% charge, which is super quick.

      @@marclovescars Yes, but also the ability to charge to 100 percent with less degradation. If you can't charge Long Range to 100 percent you're only getting like 280 miles which is only 8 miles more than the 272 miles with the RWD...which actually seems to be 275 from my last few charges! Downside is the charging speed, but honestly it's not much slower. 0-60 doesn't bother me because I usually go from 30-80 and it feels much zippier 🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾

      @@iamjoehill Yep I agree, I’ve had a lot of time to think and process information since posting my last comment. The usable daily range on the RWD is amazing, same as LR at 80% + no degradation and you can charge to 100% daily. LFP battery technology is the future of EVs!

      Wow that’s quite a price difference! Definitely not worth it. Like you said, in many countries even the SR+ isn’t worth the price. Hopefully the global Tesla prices will come down in general, even in the US they rose nearly 20% this year.

    I understand the tech advances with the new lfp batteries on the SR but god damn I can’t get over the fact they’re making Tesla’s heavier and slower for the newer models… they’re already such heavy cars, hope they don’t make them heavier with the 4680’s!

      Couldn’t agree more! You and I seem to be the only people who care about the added weight of lfp batteries. 200 pounds (the gain from the LFP battery) is not a trivial weight gain for the Model 3 SR+. That’s a 6% increase. LR Model 3 already clocks in at 4,000+ pounds, hate to see it get to 4,200 or 4,300 over time. That’s SUV weight!

      Thanks John. Yes, I do prefer the SR+ and decided to keep mine. But, if I had to buy a Model 3 right now I’d go for the Long Range.
      As far as depreciation, both seem to hold their value incredibly well since they launched in 2017. Are you assuming the RWD will hold its value better because it’s more affordable and thus more accessible to buyers? If so that’s an interesting theory, and sometimes it does happen.

      @@marclovescars yes, I’m thinking someone new to Tesla who isn’t into it as much as we are watching and creating RUclips videos like we do, might simply choose the more affordable option, especially if Tesla will remain supply constrained for the future. That’s the theory I’m running with and resale data on standard range appears to show many of the vehicles have actually appreciated in value since Tesla also raised prices several times in 2021.

    I have owned a SR+ for a year now. I now have a Long Range on order. The SR+ works fine on longer trips between major cities in california. But when you go off the main highways, the range makes a huge difference. Some national parks I just can't comfortable go to because of the range.

      Agree with you, SR+ is not great for 300-500 mile drives especially when you go to remote areas. The new RWD solves it somewhat with 272 miles range and ability to always charge to 100%. But if you charge LR to 100% occasionally, much greater range, less anxiety. Congrats on your upcoming LR!

    I believe the SR+ (rwd) is THE most efficient EV available today. - period…. When I bought my 2020 it was a relative bargain at around $37k base. The battery pack is somewhere around 50kw/hr (I think)…. If you charge at home on a standard 120v outlet, the SR+ will charge faster, as I believe the LR battery is around 20% +/- larger. But if you have a Tesla 240 v wall charger, the SR+ maxes out at only 32 amps, while I believe the SR can charge at 40 amps (maybe more??), so the LR will charge faster.. My 2020 SR+ only has 14,000 miles and is only about.2 years old, but my range has dropped from 250 down to only 208 miles at 100% charge. And I blew through the original 18” Michelin Primacy MXM rear tires at only 12,000 miles. So my range is tight 4 sure. I don’t travel much but I do get anxiety when the range drops below 40%, even though I charge at home. It really doesn’t take much driving to give me range anxiety, but I can honestly say that in almost 2 years, I have literally only used superchargers twice and have never been anywhere close to getting stranded with no charge. For me, I really think the SR+ (rwd) is a smart way to get into a Tesla at the lowest cost possible. I live in Florida, so awd is not necessity. The lighter SR+ really does handle extremely well…. I really have no regrets…

      Your SR+ was quite the bargain back in 2020. Your battery degradation scares me though, wow. I believe Tesla will replace it if it degrades past a certain point. You’ve got 6 years battery warranty left, thankfully.

    Fast forward to today, the different is now at 9K. SR = 47K and LR = 56K. I think I waited too long to jump into the Tesla bandwagon, it's way out of my range now. Such a shame.

    The 2022 Standard Range is much heavier than the 2021. The Long Range which was initially 400 lbs heavier in 2021 is now only 170 lbs heavier. This is mainly due to the new LFP heavier batteries installed on the Standard Range which is also why the 0-60 time is much slower on the Standard Range in 2022 compared to 2021. Having said that does that negate the previous con regarding the weight for the Long Range?

      That is correct, RWD model now weighs 3,800 pounds, which somewhat negates the con I had about the Long Range being too heavy. Not entirely however, because the LR still has an extra 200 pounds *on the nose* of the car. The RWD model gained weight, but in the battery pack, which is distributed across the entire car, leaving a still relatively light front end. LR has 200 pounds more weight right over the front wheels, which I don't like.

      I wouldn’t say all of the extra weight is in the nose of the car, I understand there is an added motor there, but you’re not factoring in the battery size difference of 60 KWH SR+ vs 82 KWH pack on the LR. That weight is spread below the drivers feet and even throughout the car.

    but is healthier for you and your circulation to get out of the car more often on long trips. Stick with the Standard Range Plus! :) Also today's difference with California sales tax where I live is about $9700 more for the current long range...the base model 3 would be fine for me.

      I agree 100%. While stopping frequently on a road trip to charge is annoying, it gets your blood flowing and makes you feel 10x more alert. I can drive for 7 hours and I don’t feel it at all. That’s so valuable to me. And yes the RWD to LR price gap increased again!

    Absolutely disagree BMW Harmon Kardon is better...at least on the comparative 2/3/4 series. I have an M2 COMP and Model 3. Zero contest for audio. Also, we refer to it as "understeer" if you're feeling the car push in turns. Good analysis on the 18 vs 19" but that's not a when size issue, that's a tire compound. Try Michelin PS4. Sounds like what you need is Tesla to make the RWD long range again...And maybe so do I.

      Ooh, M2 Comp, the only car I'd own besides my Model 3 (I drove an M2 CS as well, fell in love).
      I didn't do a side-by-side comparison of the HK BMW system and the Model 3 LR, it was just using my recollection. Maybe the HK wasn't as good as I remember.
      I thought my 18" and 19" wheel comparo was fair because both had the same stock Continental ProContact rubber, literally the only difference was the tire size. When my 19" Contis are bald I'm going with my go-to Performance tire, Pirelli PZeros. I've tried every Michelin performance tire and really don't like them, I've had every set I bought removed. A matter of preference I guess.
      I know what understeer is, I've been a car guy since age 5, I often describe it as "push" for the many viewers who don't know what understeer vs. oversteer is. I'm holding out hope for the RWD LR, you guessed it! Honestly, just hoping in 3-5 years Tesla will be able to bolt on a battery pack to my SR+ that gets 350-400 miles range and no added weight. I can dream!

      No, I didn’t. I ordered one, then a few weeks later canceled it. I just can’t part with my SR+, I love it too much. The light weight and balanced handling is so wonderful, I enjoy every moment behind the wheel.

    Shame they don't make the LR RWD anymore. Probably the best mix of range and driving characteristics. I test drove a MYP and really was surprised how much a difference that weight over the front wheels makes. Feels completely numb

      Couldn't agree more! If they brought back the LR RWD that would be the perfect car, IMO. Power, range and handling balance. My SR+ is perfect in every way except range.
      And I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates the additional weight over the front wheels on the AWD models! People look at me like I'm crazy when I say it, but it's a dealbreaker for me. I'd love a performance model too but that extra weight on the front, no thanks, though I think M3P manages it slightly better than LR AWD due to sticker tires, lowered suspension, etc. At the end of the day though there is no masking weight, especially on the nose.

      @@marclovescarsI am use to driving front wheel drive cars. Maybe that is why the LR feels like it pulls way better and smoother. I like the traction, planted/ smooth feel. Rear wheel drive took some getting use to for me. I went in thinking the standard would be slow, but was proven wrong big time

      Where did you find this information? I’m looking at the Tesla website right now, difference is only 174 pounds between RWD vs LR. With the old SR+ the difference was roughly 400 pounds, but nowhere near 600.

    I drive 60 miles a day to get to work. Is buying a tesla a bad idea for this situation? obviously 60 miles to get home too

      Not at all Bobby, 120 miles a day should be no problem, it just means you'll be charging the car a lot. Even the RWD Model 3 (lowest available range) you could get a full day of driving per (full) charge with range to spare. Assuming you plug it in from 8pm to 8am every night you'll gain back 72 miles with the standard 110V charger, though I'd recommend you get a 240V charger which will charge from 0 to 100% in roughly 8-10 hours. If you have access to EV chargers at work, so much the better. Go for it!

    On the 2022 the difference between the SR+and the LR in terms on range are kinda the same now because the LR gives you 350 miles but its recommended to charge up to 80% witch is about 280 miles and the SR+ with the new LFP battery its ok to charge up to 100% with a range of 273 miles , so if you do the math is only 7 miles more on the LR for 6k more . So if you don't really care about acceleration and wanna save 6k and get a battery with less degradation get the SR+ .

    400 "extra" pounds would be just three passengers. Premium sound system, Faster and fewer charging stops away from home. Vegas is outside of my long range but I never had to get there by car fast. I stop to pee at the candy store with dozens of super chargers. The power with or without the acceleration boost download is worth the price difference all by itself to me. If you can afford it get it, if you can't get the short range and factor in the stops on road trips. My vote is for the long range as budget allows.

      Agreed, for 99% of people the LR is the one to get, if budget allows.
      Re: the extra weight, keep in mind that it’s not distributed the same way 3 passengers would be. 200 pounds of the extra weight is on the front axle, right on the nose. Believe me, you feel it. Drive a LR then SR back-to-back (as I did) and it’s very noticeable. It is the end of the world? Of course not, LR wins on every other front.

    Insurance is brutal on the long range and performance models. Moreover, I absolutely my 2022 RWD Model 3 that’s now a week and a half old. I have no problems with range nor charging speed. Just remember to precondition the car when you’re on long road trips to obtain the fastest charging speeds.

    On a lease it makes $200 difference, difficult to justify, 270 can be charged at 100% while LR should be charged at 90% so that range Gap is not that significant.

    Damn you are repetitive. On and on about the weight. We get it! You could of taken 5 minutes out of the repetition. Nice of you to make a video about the differences just needed some more editing so the same thing isn’t repeated over and over again.
    Like sometimes you repeat yourself a lot. I found that often you repeated yourself and that was annoying but just the repeating is what I find to be a bit off putting. The review had some repeating during the trip which is kind of repetitive. But as long as you don’t mind repetition and hearing the same thing repeated in a repetitive way it can be a good review of the same thing over and over in a repetitive way.
    Get it? Good on you for doing it. Work on the editing 👍

      Appreciate the feedback. "You are repetitive" would have sufficed, instead of 4 examples of repetition, we all know what repetition is. But your example showed how annoying it is, and I agree with you, I should have made the video more succinct. I obsessed about the weight because literally no other review talks about it and I wanted to really hammer the point home. Sounds like I went overboard. Next video will be much shorter!
