Kudos to you, Jesse! That was totally cool...your ruck, the Plash Palatka half shelter in the plow point configuration and your modified Ranger bedroll all lend to a minimalist adventure. It was very satisfying to watch you enjoy yourself without all of the gadgets, toys and fancy gear a lot of us tend to take with us, including myself. As a young kid growing up in in Ohio, I began hiking and camping solo with an old backpack, a Boy Scout mess kit, a Spanish bota or wine bag, one of those folding knife sets with the spoon and fork, a cheap painter's drop cloth and an old Army blanket my dad kept from his tour in Korea during the conflict. Most of my gear was found in the military base thrift shop. I was the proudest and happiest kid on my block and I would wander in the woods, fish and swim in the local creek and cook whatever I could gather at home (including green tomatoes from mom's garden). Now, some 60+ years later I've forgotten how much fun I had when all I possessed were the simple things.
Thank you, Alexander! Your camping adventures growing up sound awesome. There really is a lot of joy to be found in simplicity. I like gear and checking out different toys, but I really got enamored by minimalism, old school gear and learning different skills to improve my time in the woods. Thanks for watching and sharing. All the best
As a discerning milsurp investor, i must say, it warms the cockles to see that poncho (incredible condition) in use. Godspeed sir, always nice to admire another mans surplus
I particularly enjoyed this cause I love throw together vintage military gear and accessories, I have plenty of tactical type gear but I find myself resorting back to my vintage gear. Alan Rice.
Good video. I really like the practical use of military surplus. I especially like surplus from Europe. I like to collect the different types of camo. I wear my East German pouch on a belt. I keep some necessities in it to have close to me.
thanks, Jason. Same here on the practical. The European gear certainly has character. The East German gear has been really exceptional from what I have seen.
@@EnduranceRoom do you have a po box? I have a Korean war surplus wool sleep system with the bivy. I can no longer use it. Do to health issues. As you are a huge fan of surplus gear. Thought of you,it needs a new home.
@@jamessix60 Oh wow, that sounds incredible. I will definitely feature it in some videos. Thank you very much. Send me an email to enduranceroom@gmail.com and I can send you address.
Nice video! When I was in active duty, the "ranger roll" was a way to wear your patrol cap. Probably because the modern standard issue sleep system after 1999 implemented the modular concept, so your sleep system could be as light as a gore tex bivy, or a full, -50 F rated insulated bag.
Excellent brother ! Sure hated seeing you suffer and have to choke that back strap down . Got mini me and a old classmate making the weekend on the south end of Toledo Bend. Have a great evening
Excellent video, thanks a lot. After i've changed my (high tech ) gear to simply onces, Gorka 3 from BARS, Plash Palatka and Veshmoshok i am so happy because this gear just works. Often people laugh but when it came to harsh situations the simple gear always wins. And thanks a lot for the Charcoal "trick". All the best and stay safe - greetings from austria
thank you, Reinhard! It truly does work very well. The gear would not have remained in service for as long as it did otherwise. This old gear maybe simple and a little heavier than the new stuff, but it has its benefits. I can’t imagine sitting under a modern tarp next to a fire the way I do with the Plash Palatka. All the best Jess
awesome video once again. Love the backpack, it was like watching a magician pull stuff out of a hat- the gear just kept flowing out hahaha. You weren't kidding when you said it holds a surprising amount of gear.
Fun video.Glad I found your site. 1 plash palatka isn't much of a shelter, but you managed it. If the weather was supposed to be dicey would you have taken another? I keep 1 in my truck at all times----just in case. I
thank you! Yeah, if weather had been bad, it wouldn’t have been my first choice. If it had started raining, I probably would have changed position sideways to be further inside shelter.
Heres DIY tip I am inspired to share after seeing yer pack. I buy BDU shirt from thrift store that does not fit me. From that I take the shirt apart and right away I get 15 top grade buttons for sewing kit. I cut and remove back of shirt as bandanna. The pockets I cut out of shirt keeping about 4 inches of material above each pocket that I loop over and sew and now have belt loops. I can use as belt pouch or pouch to hang around the neck. Add blanket pin and the pouch goes anywhere for permanent or temporary use like on inside of coat or anywhere on pack etc. This is real good for keeping essentials like battery operated gear close at hand and close to body heat while in sleep system in cold weather. As you know sleeping with things in pants pockets can be troublesome for comfort.
Excellent, enjoyed the simplicity, and that old surplus gear is great.....I fully expected you to light up a Gandalf style pipe when sitting by the fire ......that’s the first of your videos I’ve seen , and you’ve got another subscriber, from Devon, England 🙏🤙
I had the same result using a poncho over me. Even with tyvek. The US army bivy bag is the bomb for this. I used it with a 32 degree light down bag and it was awesome.
Yes indeed. I really like it for the area. Red is quite interesting in a camo. It was unexpected how effective it could be. I would be interested in seeing more of the Czech gear that was produced when this poncho was made (1950s), but haven’t come across anything other than the ponchos using this pattern.
@@EnduranceRoom .... At a distance of 20-30m reds appear as browns in camo patterns, next time you wear your swiss smock lay it in some leaves and walk away to see how the pattern works. As to the czech camo, a very small number of jackets were made, but these are rare collectors items these days.
It was kind of shocking how much it collected. I like the idea of a canvas bivvy. What is your main ground sheet, Glenn? My space blanket (ground sheet) has seen better days.
@@EnduranceRoom I use a small harbor f...... camo tarp .it so cheap I just use it till it worn out. Rocks and sticks kill most ground plastic ground sheets. Enjoyed the video! I think it's cool that you dedicate a video to a shelter setup and then a followup where you put it into practice. If it rained, would you end up adding another plash palatka for better coverage? Or do you think it would be enough to keep you fairly dry?
thanks Leen! I think I would just change sleeping position from side to side, rather than how I was setup. It would afford better cover that way, just a little less room.
