    Nice one. Those canvas French army tents are getting hard to get now. I left mine out for 2weeks in the rain to weather it and now the only rain that gets in comes through the zips. A tarp over the top sorts it out. Atb Ian.

    This is the first video of yours I have seen, by searching for an F2 video. I love canvas goodies, but the F2 seems like it will work out better for me. I intend on doing a ton of motorcycle camping this year, so I am looking for a smaller tent than our normal 8 man tent. These look like they fit the bill! May I suggest an alternative tent for motorcycling. Try either the USGI ICS or the TCOP military tent. I have all three but the advantages of the USGI tents is that they are free standing and need no stakes. You can set it up on any surface. they may be a bit lighter too

  • @johnstevenson9429

    I have the Nylon F2 version of this tent and I really like it. It does seem to be more waterproof than the canvass version. There is also a separate rainfly for this tent. It seems to be really hard to find. It took me forever to locate one in England. It makes the tent completely water tight and adds dead air space for insulation and warmth

    Jess, you are spot-on about having to condition, or season your canvas. On warm, dry days, I take my canvas gear out, set it up, and then hose it down. Once dry, I will repeat it 2-4 more times, weather permitting. It seems to do exactly as you hypothesize, and tighten up the fibers making it much more waterproof. I have been meaning to pass on some info on keeping your shotgun fed. I generally carry a side by side coach gun, where permitted. Recently, I tried some of the 1-1/2" shorty shotgun shells, and I'm sold. Not for any repeating shotguns, but for singles and doubles. The slug will take black bear, the #4 buckshot is ideal for "camp defense" on wolves, coyotes, big cats, etc, and the bird shot does well on grouse and smaller game. The real benefit for me is for the same amount of space, I can carry double the shells, or carry the same number but greatly reduce the volume and weight. For example, one shell loop will hold two short shells fairly easily. One up and one down. If they seem loose, insert them rim first into the shell loop. I do still carry one 3" slug, and two 2-3/4" 00 buck, but that may change soon as I get more familiar with the short shells. So far, I only carry the shorts for protection, out of hunting season, but for hunting in woods and brush, I think they are ideal. I can't speak for upland hunting, wild turkey, or hitting geese at any altitude, but they don't seem to be anywhere near as wimpy as they first would seem. I figured it might be of some interest to you and your Funderbuss. What is it they say? "Another tool for the toolbox" or some such thing... Anyhow, nuff said. Good to see you out again my friend!

    • @EnduranceRoom
      @EnduranceRoom  4 года назад +1

      Hey Sean! Nice idea on the weathering. I may have to give that a go. Good call on the minis. I have used the slugs and love em. Haven’t tried any of the others yet, but will keep an eye out. Blunderbuss has always been a word that makes me smile. Cheers my friend. Hope you are having a good one

    Great video. I recently found one of the unissued F2 tents in the UK. Just wanted something that would be used occasionally - kept in the back of a vehicle without becoming too mouldy. Tested it for a week of wet weather, a few days sleeping in it, then a few days leaving the tent on its own. My conclusions were that it will develop condensation whether you sleep in it or not. The damp air (same in/out) condenses due to the slightly warmer air trapped inside. Opening the vents helps but, then chills the inside for sleeping. I tend to leave all flaps open, relying on my sleep system to keep me warm. Use it like a bivvy with bug nets ! Keep on with the vids, given me some great ideas. Cheers

    I got the canvas one too (hard to find in UK). I had the nylon version , but gave it to the kids to play with as I’ve never had such a nightmare tent for condensation (in rained inside). Treated the canvas one with the water resistant stuff which helps and use an old fly sheet which works well, the canvas is more human and comfortable but water is heavy and weight weight weight.

    How are you liking the French tent? I was thinking of getting one myself. Great video as always!

      I really like it. Its a bit small for me at 6’2, but for what it is, it is very good. If you can find an F1, they are getting rare, so even if you buy and try it, decide you don’t like it, you could most likely resell it easily.

    Have yiu used the F 2? If so, is the water leaking a big issue as I have heard?

      I haven’t used the F2, but you could spray it with some silicone water repellent or seam seal. Another option would be to run a lightweight tarp over it. I think they are nice tents, especially for one person and gear.

      @@EnduranceRoom Thanks, you read my mind. I got some clear Gorilla spray sealer and a 7x5 tarp. I heard of the issues the F 2 have but it was only on the seams leaking. I figure it is only $69.00 at Colemans and with additional sealer I think it will be ok.

    What’s the weight difference between the F1 and 4 Palatkas set up in a pup configuration? Would you rather the palatkas over the F1 in an identical configuration even though they result in only half the ground cover of an F1?

    • @EnduranceRoom

      the F1 with the tent alone is 6lbs, I think it it about 8 or 9 with the poles and stakes. The palatka is 2.8lbs, so the tent weighs about what 3 palatkas do. There is more room with 3 plash palatka and even more with 4. I like the tent, but really appreciate the palatkas for the versatility.
