How much yarn will I need? This is a very tricky question to answer as there are so many variables! How much yarn you need will depend on which yarn you choose, the thickness of that yarn, your tension and how large you want your finished project to be. I suggest making a small sample first so you can gauge how much yarn you'll need. If making a crochet square, you can weigh your finished square to work out how much yarn it used!
How many squares do I need for a blanket? That all depends on the size of the square you are making and how big you want your finished blanket to be! I always advise making one square first then measuring the size of it. From there you can work out how many squares you will need to get the blanket size you want 😀
Do you have the written pattern? Yes! I have written patterns to accompany my video tutorials on my website here: www.hookedbyrobin.com The written pattern is generally released a week or so after the video tutorial to ensure there are no errors in the video itself and to make amendments in the written version if any are found. Wow thats a great way to use up odd bits of wool.x
What weight is the yarns you are using? If I use different weighted yarn do I need to change hook size and if so then what hook should I do UP or DOWN?? Thanks
🧶"No strand left behind"🧶
Yes, I love using 2 strands for a blanket, because it's always a mystery of how it's going to look.
I hope you're doing well, Robin🤗
😂😂😂 no strand left behind ...... brilliant! 🤣 I'm making that my motto LOL
@@HookedbyRobin Sounds good to me! Glad I could make you laugh, Robin😊
I used this idea a couple of years ago and made a giant granny square blanket...it's one of my favorite blankets I've crocheted.
I just wanted to tell you I love your channel so much! Whenever I’m stressed or can’t sleep, I love to watch crochet videos... especially yours. Your videos always help me relax!
Aw thank you so much!
Absolutely gorgeous don't think they are ugly at all, scrap busting projects can be so unique amazing and fit in any home.
Very true Mary, thank you for watching.😃
I bought a HUGE bag of random yarn from the thrift store a couple months ago and havent been able to come up with what to do with it all, so this is perfect!!
Sounds ideal for this!!
I love these types of blankets, I’ve made 3 lol 😂. I have a whole room packed with yarn. Good seeing you sweet lady 😘
I have so many of them 😂 I love them!
I've made these for a longtime and give them as gifts. My tiny great nieces play on one and it's been spotted in various photos of the children, mum and dad pinch it in the evenings so I'm making the girls a new one. Also just finished one for a friend for Christmas. They last ages and wash well, lovely and warm. Great to make whilst watching TV.
Scrap blankets are the best aren't they?
Definitely and I have just started another one. Love them. Your tutorials are lovely. Thank you.
What?! Omg. I didn’t even think this was possible!!! I will definitely make use of my leftover yarn from now on.
Oh my, I need this. I have so much yarn and yarn scraps that I need to do something with. Thank you for this!
It is a genious way of using leftover yarn.made numerous huge blankets like this in late 1980 when I was at the peak of crochet .that reminds me i could definetly make another one this weekend. Thanks alot ma'am for a exellent tutorial 😊❤
My pleasure Einar, enjoy your blanket making.😃🧶
@@HookedbyRobin thank you.
Yeaaah for stash busting throws!
I am working on one now but joining the yarns together? Never crossed my mind. I am going to incorporate this in my crochet. Thank You!
You made my day...using them as rugs! Great idea!
And yes, I fully agree...less perfect is perfect!!!
Thanks... making scrap baskets is great too. And you’ll finish in one sitting. And yes, with those super knots, these scrap blankets are so warm, they wash over and over well, become softer with each wash and dry so they become everyone’s favorite!
I completely agree! I've literally just finished this beast of a blanket - I always seem to finish scrap blankets as I don't get bored! Most other blankets are destined to become forever WIPs 😀 This blanket will be gifted to a friend of mine so hopefully she will love it too! X
I have always loved scrap blankets because they are all unique and its the not knowing how it will look once finished, often much nicer than if a pattern had been used!
I definitely agree Mary! 😃🧶
i have so much yarn and I had no idea what to do with it until i can across this video! i am currently working on a scrap yarn blanket to get rid most of my yarn so I can get new yarn! i love this idea! this is going to be the third blanket I’ve crocheted and i’m excited to see how it turns out!
Hi Maddie, I am so glad my video helped - it is the perfect stash buster and always exciting to go shopping for new yarn! 😃🧶
Love this idea I have done this before, I've even made a big enough baby blanket with it too and an amigurumi to go with it!! And the tiny scrap pieces make great stuffing as well. If they're too stringy I just shred it with my dog brush
Thank you so much for posting this. I started mine on the weekend from a couch full of yarn I was going to giveaway and absolutely love it! It is one of the best things I've made in a long time - I love it!
Thanks so much for this one Robin...almost finished using up my combo of scrap yarn and have to say , am pretty impressed with how it turned out!
What a brilliant idea! Love this! I am in desperate need of making a scrap blanket and this would be perfect xx
Had a stressful day at work and am starting mine now for stress therapy! With a glass of wine of course!!
Sounds like the perfect combo to combat stress! 🧶🍷
Love this! This is exactly what I do with my leftovers. A big hook and three or four strands at a time and just throwing all the colors in no particular order. It’s so much fun to make stashbuster afghans and they are so nice and warm and cuddly for cold weather. Yours is beautiful!
This is a beautiful blanket!!!! I am excited to make one 🥰🙏🏻 thank you for sharing
I started one looking great and using white yarn with all my scrap yarn. Great idea thx
I never thought of doing that before, what a great idea.
Yup getting ready to start my scrap blanket. I'm down to scraps with my yarn so I am going to work on this this week. I need to get out and get yarn for my next scarf, but for now this will keep me busy. Great idea working with three strands.
I am fairly newish to crocheting, thank you, pandemic. What a unique concept, I had never heard of it. I think your blanket is beautiful.
Could you please make a tutorial on how to start the blanket? 😍😍
I love these scrap blankets Robin yours looks fabulous , I made mine into a bedroom rug and it's so strong and hard wearing , it's been down a couple of years now and always washes well and looks so colourful , you've inspired me to do another thank you 😊Amanda xx💕
Love three strands!!! I'll bet it's nice and cushy soft!
beautiful blanket and super idea! thank you for your videos - always learn from them! 🌺
I got a boatload of different yarns. This is a great idea for lap blankets for the elderly. Thanks!
Ooh yes great idea!
Great Video....Your personality is so fun, and a wonderfully inspiring way to create with the left over yarns!!! Cheers!
I never thought of doing it this way I am starting it today ,Thank You you inspired be to give it try!!!!
I have soooooo many scrap bundles. Now I know what I'm going to do with them! Yay!
I love this idea. I love all the colours too
That's what I did with bags of scraps someone gave me. I was new and after practicing I dug out all the autumn colors and very light colors. Used 2 strands autumn with one light, switch after few rows with 2 light/one autumn. Made a very nice (even with some newbie mistakes) and warm blanket for my son, who just moved into his first place.
I'm making one of these right now. It's getting quite large and hope to make it big enough to fit my king size bed!
Love your idea...I have so many odd skeins....I started a sample using a different pattern. Thank you for sharing.
I also love them and give them away. Kids love them because they're warm and so do seniors.
doing a scraps blanket doing the Cluster V Stitch! Such a great way to use up scraps! Can pick it and put it down when you have loads of scraps - which I have after making the unicorn blanket!!
I already made my blanket. It's at a club for children. It's used to calm down some kids that are having a hard day. Thank you for your video
Robin you are just lovely to listen to! Your patterns are so fun and my son loves his snuggly jellyfish at bedtime and his jellyfish keychain. I started a scrap blanket years ago but it's seemed to disappear in all our moves (military). I'm going to start another one soon, so thanks! 😊
The blanket is gorgeous! I am making a granny with 5 strands. Love your idea!
Great idea; I have lots of spare yarn and so I will try this and give to the grandchildren or their pets. Xx
Beautiful afghan. I love the yarn you used.
Thank you so much Anne! 😃🧶
I needed this!! Been thinking of what to do with my scrap yarn, and here we are!!! Lol love your content Robin!!!
Haha great timing then! 😂
So glad to see you again!! I’ve missed your happy “ talking hands”! Hope to see you again soon! 😘
😅🙌🧶
My first scrap yarn blanket fits over a xl twin size bed and then some. I did 2 strands...always one light color like a white, aran...off white and a color. A million kinds of yarns and the whole thing in a double crochet with an H hook. Took about 6 hours. Was just watching TV and stitching along on a rainy weekend. These are my favorite also!!
I’m currently making a blanket based on this and it’s turning out really good. Such a great way to use up all the scrap bits.
How did it go?😀
Lovely color combinations. Nice and cozy. 👍🤗
What a wonderful idea! I absolutely love it & it's turning out beautifully.
Thank you so much Michelle! 🥰🧶
thanks Robin! I'm making a small scrap for a baby! the different colors will make the baby smile 🙂
Definitely! 😍 Lovely idea.x
Your hands are gorgeous! You could be a hand model. I’m defs trying that blanket, too cute!
Great idea to use up left over yarn. And it’s not ugly at all 😊it’s actually pretty n chunky n will be nice n warm. Great TV blanket.
Thank you so much!😃🧶
I love to crochet scrap blankets also! only two strands not to be so heavy
Thank you for sharing
👋 Hope you and your family are well. 😊 Love making scrappy blankets! Yours is very pretty!
Scrappy blankets are the best!
What a fantastic idea !!
That’s such a dang good idea !!! I have a ton of left overs from all the Yule stuff I’ve been making. Oh thank you💕
A scrappy Yule blanket!
I absolutely love this idea. You mention it id huge so I was wondering how many chains did you choose for this awesome blanket? Thanks.
Anyone work out how many?
@@wendajones9040 I made mine about 130 chains and it is very wide. I would suggest starting with 100 chains and then adjusting it to your preference from there. Probably somewhere between 110 and 120 for a regular blanket, but it will also depend on your yarn, hook, and tension.
@@amyleonard5854 THANK YOU!! ✌🏻
@@amyleonard5854 thank you ❤ I was wondering about the multiples so thank you so much
Scrap blankets are my favourite too!
I’ve become hooked on crocheting double stranded baby blankets… I #3 yarn… Two strands makes a very soft, squishy blanket.. You can mix colors, or use one color as a constant… There are lots of options.
Your videos are very nice and very helpful A very big thanks for sharing
Your bubbly personality is the best! Love the bl;anket, too!
Thank you so much!🥰
So fun and beautiful! You just gave me an excuse for buying more yarn. 😂
The best type of shopping Danielle!😃🧶
Love this so much. I am using one neutral (cream or white) one pale and one darker strand… working my way through the rainbow ❤
That will look so lovely Karen.😃🧶
Probably going to do one of these once I get all my projects done and get my yarn organized
hahaha!! no offense, but when does THAT all happen?? 😸enjoy your projects!! 😊
@@topazpitt4619 when your moving soon and don't want to add to your yarn collection lol. I'm gonna try it's a lot of baby projects right now and finishing blankets.
Looks good proper and well organized 👌
I used to hate scrap blankets. I made one with two strands to yarn. A color and white and did a "from the middle" granny. When it was all done I loved it. In fact my daughter grabbed it when I was done and uses it all the time.Since then I've made about6 different scrap blankets. Some all different colors, one was squares of "beautiful Shells" in all shades of browns, beiges, tans and it came out very nice. The next one was all sizes of grannys fit together in all the shades of browns from earlier with a nice Eggshell border around groups of grannys and then around the entire blanket. I am working on a C2C moss stitch and just pulling colors out of my basket and using that one for a bit, then change again. No rhyme or reason to the color changes. I had a bunch of 1/2 skeins from other projects that weren't enough to make a whole blanket. In fact I was looking through my 4 Rubbermaid tubs where I store my yarn and I think I am going to start doing all scraps. Mixing and matching colors or shades of colors in order to use up a lot of the yarn I have (so I can buy more). I find scrap blankets are now among my favorites. In fact I might make a scrap of all baby colors since I have a bunch of leftovers from all the baby blankets I've made.
They sounds amazing Jan and great idea on the yarn!😃🧶
This is really brilliant. I love how changing colors one at a time really adds to the muted color change.
I made a blanket with 2 strands and it turned out beautifully
Can you do a video about crochet and knitting terms?? I am 11 and I started in august so I am still new!
Thank you. Great idea!!
It’s beautiful Robin !
I was making a crop top but it was my first crochet project so the whole thing came out horribly. Now I'm adding more yarn to turn it into a desk blanket (not long enough for the bed but perfect length and width for sitting at my desk to work). I can treasure it as my first project, see all the mistakes (and improvements) while having it keep me cozy. I'm going to add more colours just for fun. It's not going to make ANY sense when I'm done with it but I will love it for what it is :)
I love three strand blankets. They are SO cozy.
They really are Cara!😃
This is my favorite blanket to make I use a 9 to 12 mm hook and use 2 to 3 strands depending on the weights. Its a good seller for me also...people love them they say they are warm.
They are so cosy Sandra!🥰🧶
@@HookedbyRobin and also very warm I have one queen sized like a comforter on my bed for those very cold nights.
Robin: if you're like me, and have a lot of yarn-...
me: YEP 100%
(edited...) also, i absolutely love the blanket!!!! lots of vibrant colours which makes it more pretty:))
😂😂🙈
Robin I absolutely LOVE your videos!! I just finished two blankets with this multiple thread half crochet after watching your video. I really like this easy stitch! I’ve never used it before. Thank you for sharing. I’ll keep watching
Awwh, thank you so much!🥰
Love this idea! ☺️
This is a great idea. Thank you so much. ❤🤗
I’m working with two #4 yarns, and an N hook... The main yarn is Lion Brand Ombré...colorwaybHAPPY, and various colors of LB Ice Cream, Cotton blend, plus some solid colored yarn.. . I’m usurping n HDC stitch. I love it.
Going to make this! Thank you! 💕
🙌
I love it! Thank you!
Thank you thank you thank you so much if it wasn't for you and your videos especially the stash buster blanket totally got me hooked. I finally finished my first large crochet project. And thank you so much for the advice in the videos.
I am so much the indecisive personality who can't pick what color they want to use or what colors go together. I did it exactly as you said, it used up my whole stash of yarn, I didn't get hung up on the color choices. I grabbed some yarn my hooks pulled up the video hit play and started crocheting along with your video and as I was crocheting I was like oh my gosh what she said is so true and the blanket does get really really freaking heavy it's the heaviest blanket I think I've ever owned huge heavy and I use three strands. It turned out absolutely beautiful!! Now I'm confident in my crocheting skills. And it totally took my crocheting to the next level as well as when you're making this blanket you're not thinking about the colors you're putting together you just I just grab random colors and as I was going along that's when I started realizing oh my gosh these colors look absolutely beautiful together oh I definitely don't like these colors together. love ya thx again
What size is your blanket, please?
@@yvonneetheridge9637 I made it a little bit bigger than a queen so it hangs down a little further on all sides cuz I have a tall bed and I also put a little bit extra in the length so I could cover up my pillows
I have seen a lot of stash buster or scrap yarn blankets, but I have never seen anyone else do exactly this... I have made 2 blankets so far exactly like this hook and all, except I use double crochet. I'm currently got 4 going for my kids to each have one. I call them fun funky crazy blankets. I ball all my yarn im not gonna use into small balls and randomly pick a ball when 1 rolls out so they are super funky.
I love it !
I loved this video! I am getting ready to use up all my scraps after seeing this. And side note: I love your nails. 😊such a fun video. Thanks for sharing your tips.
Thank you and the scrap blankets are so fun! I hope you enjoy it.😃🧶
