@@LOLAP95 Well the point when people say that is that he isn't a powerlifter, and even if he has done it before, it is very rare and a very long time ago, it is pretty much the same thing as if it were his 1st time.
he has nerve damage on one of his hands and thats why his deadlift performance was limited. in strongman competitions straps are allowed, and he can lift 450+ on a regular bar.
he could improve 100 lbs just in his bench, the squat looked easy but not deep enough and his grip needs more work. He does actually have the WR in a couple years.
It is interesting how different peoples powers are - magnues samuelsson weighed 150kg but benched 270kg x 2 with bad technique(zero bridge), but hafthor is 40kg heavier(on 5cm more height only), benches less but his other lifts are much stronger(only grip and arms magnus was stronger)
habs 76 Actually he probably would. Increasing your body weight does increase strength especially when strength training is added. The strength gained through increased body weight is not linear though. But you don’t see many 200 lb world strongest man competitors for this reason. To be that strong you have to be big. Why do you think everyone who has one worlds strongest man for the past 5 or 6 years has been over 400lbs?
I also wanted to add his extreme ROM on the bench makes those lifts even more impressive....no curled up inchworm 2" ROM presses here. It takes savage strength to press as far he does to lock out.
James Strickland has the closest grip i’ve seen on bench and he benches a near 700lbs at sub 300lbs dude. That guy is probably the most impressive raw bench presser out there
Consider the fact he had done the other lifts before. His max deadlift must have been much higher than 430 at the time. Still the progress he made is incredible
No he didn't. His 501 was with 8-straps and suit which helped a lot. He added maybe 10kgs to 20kgs consider how far his 501 Arnold attempt went. Still insane
Thor didn't get the world record today but he was extremely close. There were 2 *tiny* failures that made him miss it. 1. He needed about 1 more inch of depth on his 3rd squat, this is not a strength issue, he pressed it with speed and ease, if he did 1 inch lower it wouldn't have changed his performance on the lift, but would have gotten him the white lights. 2. He was 3/4 up the deadlift on his 3rd attempt and still going, it was not grinding at all. The back strength and all is there EXCEPT his grip. Get his grip up by 5% and it would have been a go. If those 2 tiny mistakes didn't occur we would have seen a new all time world record today.
Solutions are getting stronger squat and learning hook grip. Still it's possible there is higher (than his 3rd) white lighted squats in history of untested federation.
He could try and hit his best as his 2nd attempts and just fail or break it. It seems he just got tired. His probably has that dead usually but not after a full meet in the same day.
@@19Kamau79 Stronger squat will of course help but he doesn't need a stronger squat to beat the atwr though. Did you see how fast 1014 went up? He could have went an inch or 2 deeper and still completed it just fine. He can currently do 1014 just fine.
I doubt he'll do it as more than a hobby to be honest, there's no money in powerlifting. He'll probably focus on strongman for as long as he can stay on top and then live off his supplement company or something.
Center judge white lighted the 1st squat, all three white lighted the 2nd, and one of the side judges white lighted the 3rd and yet his squat looked identical all three times. I don't think the problem is his squat, but rather consistency from the judges.
@Strength Central - I’m sorry but that’s B.S. Thor third Squat attempt at 460 KG was a good lift in my opinion. He squatted a little bellow parallel. If not that then, he definitely squatted at parallel. Can you please explain to me why his third squat attempt didn’t count as a good lift?
@@Slashbag69 actually it seems that it slipped, which isn't because of grip strength,so i would more say chalks issues.but ye in the 501 he had straps AND a suit,he could have done more anyway when you see how easy 501 was to him.so i would say 440 maybe 450 in powerlifting meet with enugh training because the way to deadlift in powerlifting isn't the same as in strongman also.same squat i think, but a better bench press not that mych, maybe 260-265.so in his prime i think he woudl have done 1160-1175kgs which is better than manalychev!!!
You do know Thor was 230 at age 21 right? You’ve seen the transformation. Don’t get me wrong, his strength and size are impressive even juiced out of his mind....but he is juiced out of his mind
10 kg over Ray Williams. Granted he had knee wraps instead of sleeves which gives a bit more to your squat but if he entered the IPF 120 kg+ class his only competition would literally be Ray.
Rich Lee At this class of weight I can believe it, but the sleeves give you some too. Even if he couldn’t beat Ray, he’s the only one he couldn’t beat since Ray is more than 40 kg over second place. They’re almost dead even on the bench, Ray’s got maybe a 50-75 lb advantage on the squat and Thor has almost the same with the deadlift. Thor would walk away with the Gold Medal for Deadlift, Silver for Squat and Silver Overall at worst if he entered the IPF. I’d really like to see it. He and Ray are the same age so they’re at similar stages. It would up Ray’s game too. He’s so comfortably ahead of his competition that he never fails a lift (except once or twice in squat depth, not because it was too heavy). He’s not forced to max out on any of his lifts.
Mai A I tend to believe Ray would do a good deal better untested. We all know drug tested is not the same as drug free but you have to cycle off, cant take the same things, etc.
Rich Lee This is true. It’s even more apparent in the women’s division. For example the strongest tested female raw bench of all time is Bonica Brown’s 150 kg bench. The tested record male bench is around double that. I realized even juiced there are extremely few women indeed who can clear 300 lbs or 135 kg on the bench, but a tested lifter? I can only think of 3 off hand that can clear that much and they all are the strongest in their weight classes even in total.
@Vinny Booboo the Olympics is full of people on peds tho. From boxing being corrupted af, shady anti doping policy between events and, people who get caught for taking shit coming back after their suspension even better and the hypocrisy of a few countries, the Olympics are one of the dirtiest form of sport
Should Hafthor Bjornsson decide to focus his attention to powerlifting he would be quite the force in RAW lifting competitions. Imagine, he practices the 1014 pound squat and nails it, gets his bench up to a conservative (for him) 625 pounds, and hits an 1100 pound deadlift, which I think he could legitimately do. His 1014 pound squat was outrageous.
Great squat and deadlift but bench not so much. Sarychev has done almost 200lbs more raw so if I was Thor that's what I would be working on most. His first deadlift looked like he could double it. Also something to be said for taller guys on the bench and squat in that they have to travel much longer distance in their movement. They may in fact even be stronger than someone who does the same weight but is shorter. But the deadlift they have an advantage.
The third squat was CLEAN!!! and EASY i might add. Thors dead stop bench was like in super slow mo. he has 575 in him, no doubt. Dead lift, grip failed but he can DEF get 940 dead, raw. Thor would go over 2500, NO DOUBT.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that 3rd squat, as picture perfect as the first two
Seriously though, seems set up to me!
Boris Sheiko was the head judge hence judging was strict, as it should be!!!
@@Chair991 how did you know he hit depth? Were you sitting alongside the side judge? The front angle can be deceptive. Only correct way is too judge from the side. Kirill posted some side vids on his instagram story and they all looked very close in terms of depth. None of the squats were buried.
Rules state convincingly hit depth if you doubt it slightly than its not convincing enough so red-light that shit
@@Chair991 More like a sensible judge who isn't afraid to red light Thor!
@@Chair991 "hits depth"....according to who...you? Were you there? What qualifications do you have in powerlifting officiating?
@@DforDelinquent According to one of the judges and pretty much anyone with a pair of eyes.
Almost broke the ATWR in his first meet in 7+ years, I can pretty much guarantee that he takes it next year. He was born for this.
The 3rd squat got red lighted. Was it for depth ?
Yes
@@OdinsKoch thanks
Looked like a good rep from the front what a shame
Yeah if you look closely he is just shy of parallel, great attempt tho
@@Hanuman_ yeah. It was close but I'm glad they didnt give it to him. Would have been suspect.
So sad that he retires for boxing. He just kept on getting stronger & stronger. If he continued I bet he would be able to squat over 500kg, bench 280-300 & deadlift 520.
Knew he wouldn't get the record but he honestly surprised me by going over 2400, insane strength!
Those fucking squat faces.... grimey, fuck yes! Great showing at this meet. More to come I hope.
Considering that Thor just did a double with 1003lbs IN TRAINING I would love to see him try this again.
That squat was poetry
Was that the Bugez voice at the end?!
IT´S A MINDSETTTTTTTTTTT
its on every video on this channel, weird lol
@@jacekwaasiewicz716 yeah it's really being overused tbh..

@@musicforhours4605 Cringe is a mindset, too, my unhappy friend.
between the bench and the deadlift, he left a world record total on the table.Fucking impressive!
Anyone not saying yet:"he went haf thor and not full thor"?
i see what you did thor
Damn Thor's bench form is so nice.
And your hands are small
@@overthebar I know
In ancient greece mans like him was on small panathineans and big Olympics races now im wander why this amazing strong man never be on Olympic games ? Hafthor you are real Viking much respect on you
The red lights on the squat confuse me...he looked deep enough.
It can be hard to judge from our view, that’s why they have three judges front and sides
No it was just a 90 ° squat
And remember this man is tall and long. That range of motion is real. He’s really moving the bar a good distance. Makes him even stronger.
This is his 1st powerlifting meet and his ONLY 40kg under the world record. He can definently break it and with his height amd still being able to do this is mind blowing a true viking bloodline BADASS
it's not though , he competed multiple times before
@@LOLAP95 Well the point when people say that is that he isn't a powerlifter, and even if he has done it before, it is very rare and a very long time ago, it is pretty much the same thing as if it were his 1st time.
I absolutely love Thor’s bench set up it’s so nice watch great bench form
he has nerve damage on one of his hands and thats why his deadlift performance was limited. in strongman competitions straps are allowed, and he can lift 450+ on a regular bar.
Thor...you are a beast! Great lifting!
I was hoping so badly that he would break the all-time total WR. Still pretty nice though :)!
Jasper vb hopefully soon
he could improve 100 lbs just in his bench, the squat looked easy but not deep enough and his grip needs more work. He does actually have the WR in a couple years.
I hope he's able to come back and compete again.
It is interesting how different peoples powers are - magnues samuelsson weighed 150kg but benched 270kg x 2 with bad technique(zero bridge), but hafthor is 40kg heavier(on 5cm more height only), benches less but his other lifts are much stronger(only grip and arms magnus was stronger)
since when does being heavy makes you strong? i lift more than most people that weight more than me..
Magnus was famous for having insanely strong arms though which must have helped his bench be proportionally stronger than his other lifts
if you take 2 guys that never trained, one that weights 200 and the other one 300, the 300 wont lift more necessarily
habs 76 Actually he probably would.
Won*
Some REAL full ROM lifts. Beast mode.
That guy is probably the most impressive raw bench presser out there
Short ROM is overrated. Kirill Sarychev hold world record with long arms, Thor has the potential to bench a lot too
He added 70kg to his deadlift in a year.
This is never not crazy
Consider the fact he had done the other lifts before. His max deadlift must have been much higher than 430 at the time. Still the progress he made is incredible
No he didn't.
His 501 was with 8-straps and suit which helped a lot.
He added maybe 10kgs to 20kgs consider how far his 501 Arnold attempt went.
Still insane
If he can get that bench up a little he can definitely beat the record
and if they don't red light that excellent squat LOL.
That bench was surprisingly low, but he is a fucking BEAST. Holy shit. Made that 1015 look EASY
@@bobbyrau382 Higher squat fast for sure he's very tall and his weak point is clearly at the bottom. 440k didn't look too fast being slightly deeper.
of course he has the back strength, he has deadlifted over 470kg in WSM
What an unbelievable specimen thor is
was Kirill Sarychev on this meet aswell?
yes
Yep. Benched 300kg on his third
nice, not bad, he's slowly getting back into shape for another record
Not sure if he ever goes for another record.
.He seems busy with other stuff that benefits him financially more than competitive powerlifting
Sean G in one of his latest videos on his channel he said that he wants to go for 350 kg bench press in a year
Good job man omfg, this guy has so much potential!
Does anyone know whether or not he's going to continue to compete in powerlifting? If so he'll break the record very soon
I doubt he'll do it as more than a hobby to be honest, there's no money in powerlifting.
He'll probably focus on strongman for as long as he can stay on top and then live off his supplement company or something.
@@BigUriel
His participation could bring more money into the sport, possibly.
I am from the future and know that he wont
This is truely impressive. Perfect technique
He could challenge Ray Williams with better prep imo
My knees tore just watching that squat. Like actual physical pain.

1100 total - first powerlifting meet.. Holy fucking shit
Center judge white lighted the 1st squat, all three white lighted the 2nd, and one of the side judges white lighted the 3rd and yet his squat looked identical all three times. I don't think the problem is his squat, but rather consistency from the judges.
M. C. they say the head juge is boris sheko
you always see these big fancy cameras filming events like this but then you never get to see the footage or where you can buy it from
@Strength Central - I’m sorry but that’s B.S. Thor third Squat attempt at 460 KG was a good lift in my opinion. He squatted a little bellow parallel. If not that then, he definitely squatted at parallel.
Can you please explain to me why his third squat attempt didn’t count as a good lift?
3 attempts in squat, all 3 with same pace, this guy is a total badass
He failed 430kg deadlift
He did 501 now
He didn't have any straps for the 430 though. That was the only reason he failed.
The Mountain Squating like a Beast !!
Thor could break that 1080 squat easily
That was without wraps.
We are here after Thor's announcement! Let's do it Hafthor, you can break the ATWR! 100%
My favorite natty lifter
?
You do know Thor was 230 at age 21 right? You’ve seen the transformation. Don’t get me wrong, his strength and size are impressive even juiced out of his mind....but he is juiced out of his mind

Having Boris Sheiko give you commands at your meet is a dream come true
1:16 "Va perro":v
Could: deadlift = 420 kg, squat judges were wrong. In total, it could be 1130 kg.
10 kg over Ray Williams. Granted he had knee wraps instead of sleeves which gives a bit more to your squat but if he entered the IPF 120 kg+ class his only competition would literally be Ray.
Mai A it gives more than a bit. It can add 50 kg.
This guy is a real strength machine
Eddie hall fanboys incoming
That no strap deadlift was insane
..... nothing wrong with the 3rd squat!
This guy is a monster. For a tall guy he squats quite well. Nice and deep with not a ton of forward tilt. Excellent form. Wow impressive.
He is really THE MOUNTAIN.Never a roll fit so well.
He can squat more than my bench, squat and deadlift combined
The third squat was CLEAN!!! and EASY i might add. Thors dead stop bench was like in super slow mo. he has 575 in him, no doubt. Dead lift, grip failed but he can DEF get 940 dead, raw. Thor would go over 2500, NO DOUBT.
to be fair he would have the all time total SMASHED inside of 2 years. he’s incredible, and humble and a nice guy to boot!
He’s easily got the next world record in a couple meets
Brutally strong
Amazing stuff. I hope it encourages some of the other strongman competitors to have a crack and push each other to bigger lifts.
