I am 64 and hadn't any familiarity with the band until a year ago when I heard this recording. I have spent the last year looking up everything I could find. They are truly extraordinary and as good if not better then some of the great groups of my generation. It's kind of sad that they aren't held in higher regard and don't have more recognition.
sadly that tends to apply to so many bands.
Damn you old
It’s awesome that you recognize their (Doug’s) brilliance. I started listening to them around 2002 thanks to my roomate in college. Been a die hard fan since the first listen. Seen them about 7 or 8 times . Every show was as good as the studio recordings sounded. However, with the new 3 piece lineup change this year, the performance sounds “thin” from what I’ve seen on RUclips. Going to see them in September this year anyway. But I really hope Doug adds 1 or 2 supporting guitarists to fill out the layers for future tours. If you haven’t seen them, definitely go and enjoy the show. If you ever get to see them as a full 5 piece, your mind will be absolutely blown. Cheers!
You're correct that BtS is overlooked, underestimated, etc. Always have been. The listener has to be flexible, the vocals are never really expressive or in a hurry. There's not a lot of simple "hooks" for the average listener. And most listeners treat music superficially if they consider it at all -- they want pleasant noise for the background. With these factors in play, a band like BtS will always dwell on the fringes.
A band influenced by BtS, but which was more eager to make money and therefore made their music more Average Listener Friendly, is Modest Mouse. Not surprisingly, they became uninteresting to me around the same time they courted fame. Their songs became something written for children or teenagers, and for Soccer Moms to sing along to while driving their expensive pavement-restricted SUV.
The average listener likes average (if not worse) music.
@@seanoneil277 All good points, and it’s a damn shame.
Me and my buddy ate pizza with him in Raleigh before his gig, We were talking about some 70s soft rock tune playing on the radio and he seemed intrigued and asked if we minded him butting in our conversation and he sat with us. We are giddy like little school girls cause we knew we were in the presence of brilliance. I don't think he really knew or cared that we were there to see him. He was just being a normal guy interested in talking music and he was the coolest. Love me some Doug!
Hours before the show in Seattle 99' he and his wife ate dinner with my girlfriend and I. Great people, one of my fondest memories.
A friend of mine was in Boise for work a few years ago, and he ran into him at a bar and ended up chatting for hours about music. He said he was a super cool guy.
this is their best lineup!
Doug is a fucking monster. If he were playing in the 60s or 70s instead of now, he'd be recognized as a guitar god
Especially considering he never loops his guitar cable around his strap and still slams that foot!
@@MasterohCrimp is there a reason he stomps his foot like that? Is it akin to Neil Young having back problems and that's why he goes all cattywonkus vill when he solos?
Also I consider Doug a guitar god indefinitely
@@jugginator2.068 I will have to re-watch and see what I think...
Thanks for giving me a reason to make a drink and say fuck work, I'm watching a concert!
@@jugginator2.068 I think a lot of it has to deal with 3 guitarists and off beat timing while singing however.
@@MasterohCrimp he really gets into it. I dont mind it at all I was just curious. thank you
What Doug says around the 20:00 mark is hilarious
Doug is asking the venue staff how much time they have left to play, since that would factor in to their decision of what to play next. After a short exchange with the venue staff, the band concludes that there is 'plenty of time' left for them to play their set. . .
Doug casually announces to the crowd they have 'one more' . . .
They start into a beautiful 17 min version of Broken Chairs.
I saw Built to Spill at Bumbershoot in Seattle a few weeks ago. It ways waay to short, but I loved the show!
Maybe I should listen to more Neil Young. BtS's cover of Cortez the Killer has always been a favorite.
+Caleb Hotchkiss look up the built to spill cover of Cowgirl in the Sand, another neil young song. its pretty great.
+dirtmerchant1980 I loved this cover, I watched the Michelle Records Reeperbahn Festival Hamburg 2013 version. What are the best BtS websites for fans? Where do you find the best live recordings online besides YT?
i mean...plenty of time for "Goin against your mind."
Piling on here I know. But, after listening to this Broken Chairs performance many times over the last 6 years, I'll say it: it is so, so, so, so, so gooooood! I love rediscovering this fact over and over. 20 minutes of sheer radness.
there's never a bad time to listen to built to spill, they'll change your entire mood -- one of the best bands we've ever been gifted
Very depressed before I chose to listen to this, feel like living still.
Eager to see them in October!
@@MasterohCrimp keep it going on my friend 🖤
Their music means a lot to me
There's a lot of meaning in these comments.
scaredypicker I take it you love the pixies!
The Holy Father. The fact that the comment means a lot to you means a lot to me!
0509killer one must work the 12 steps to know!
@@danielgreen8483 I love the Pixies! Black Francis is a hero! Can you actually trust someone who doesn’t like the Pixies? In addition I love Built to Spill. The lyrics, the music, it is just all around great.
Doug looks like that best friend's cool dad whom you would never guess is as cool as he really is upon first meeting him.
Jem S Saw them a few years ago at a small venue in Boston. Out of the whole band, Doug waited after the show on stage and took pictures with and talked to people. I was not disapointed :)
PPFaceification That's wicked! Not surprised, he seems like a friendly guy.
I am jealous though!
Jem S this is a very accurate description actually. he's a mailbox holder at my job (ups store) and totally didnt even recognize him the first time i met him, he just seemed like a normal dude. then i looked at the mail i was putting away a few days later and saw his name and built to spill records as the adressee.
Mastatduck he just seemed like a normal dude ...what do you mean by that ? ... :p
Jem S And I hear his stepfather looks just like David Bowie.
Doug's combination of humility and talent is off the charts.
This entire set sounds great. There is a point in Broken Chairs where all 3 guitarists are soloing simultaneously. It sounds so fucking good.
37:49? Solos I mean 😁
Yep. When I speak about BTS I always ask, have u heard the sxsw stage on 6th show closer broken chairs??? This is as good as BTS gets. Never be another. Hope Dug Ultimately decides to bring Bret and Jerms back in.....
I wish I could "like" this every time I watch it.
9:26 The Intro to time trap is literally the best thing I have ever heard, beyond badass.
It's quite common in metal fo sure still bad azzz
Its like they put the crescendo of the song at the start, shouldnt work, but it dose.
@@Brain-Wormed that's what I've always loved about it - it seems like a simple concept, inverting the structure of a song, but not many bands that I've heard have done it in this particular way
Love Built To Spill. Doug's so mellow and unassuming, doesn't seem to have an ego at all. I've seen these guys play 20 times, they never disappoint. (Except one show in DC where Doug was getting shocked by the mic and was afraid to sing. Not really his fault.) In all those concerts... I've never heard Doug say more than a few words on stage, it's always "Thanks" or "Thanks a lot" after each song. Sometimes I wish he had a little more banter on stage, I'd like to know more about him, hear a story every now and then. Maybe he's not comfortable chatting on stage, or perhaps he just wants to get on to the music and entertain us.
He is just a nice quiet person. We saw him in a very small club a few years ago and he was just chilling in front of the stage watching the opening band. My wife and I talked to him for a few minutes. Very nice and polite, but I wouldn't call him chatty.
Most Idahoans in the 20th Century apart from Sun Valley/Hailey, and in the 21st Century apart from those towns & Boise, are unassuming people. Those exceptions listed are towns which are mostly un-Idahoan now, thanks to yuppie transplants lording their wealth and demands over the local govts and changing those towns to something more like greater Los Angeles, or Aspen.
I think that is why J Mascis uses an sm57 live, it has a plastic barrier
I saw them open for Dinosaur Jr. There were a lot of "thanks a lot" that night.
I love Built to Spill Ill always see them when they come to Massachusetts they always give you a hell of a show no matter what, but its a real damn shame Brett and Scott left. This is the best line up for Built to Spill they all gel really nice together on stage and always play very tight
i saw them recently as a trio and it just felt so empty. still had a good time but damn i miss this BtS :(
As I’ve gotten older and being a BTS fan for 25 years, I have really grown to love Dug as a singer and his voice. He can really hit the notes vocally to match his guitar playing.
8:16 on is such a unique Built To Spill sound. Love it.
"how much time do we have left. we kinda need to know to decide what songs we want to play". *turns an 8 minute song into a 17 minute song*
Well, they do tend to play it ~19 minutes live usually...
That's the beauty of them live. Every song is extended and fucking brilliant.
i knew them in a gig where they played 'broken chairs' and neil young's 'cortez the killer', each 20 minutes long. i was so high that all i can remember is this and the impact that wall of sound made in me. i guess there was more on the setlist (the plan? car?), but i really can't recall...
there is just something so interesting about them.....even if people aren't jumping around you can just feel that they are captivated.
Funny; I was on "Three Years Ago Today" when I realized that this show was filmed, literally, three years ago today.
and this comment was made three years ago! hurray for meaningless coincidences!
This is the fucking greatest thing on RUclips! Period.
Amen to that.
It's always nice to hear Three Years Ago Today.
I always watch the whole thing when I come back round to this vid. What a set.
Brings me back to earlier days. Buzzing chills that almost brings me to tears... truly amazing music. Thank you!
Found this a year later... love it!
The greatest. Wish new shows would have the three guitars like this show. Please.
Actually, i prefer the current power trio, those ladies inject great energy!!!
I also love the current trio! Would love to hear this sort of expansive sound from the band again, but both shows I saw last year were incredible
Fucking epic! I've been a long time fan. I saw them a couple years ago at First Ave in Minneapolis. Doug's so unassuming. They set up their own gear and shot the shit with the early arrivers, then did the same after the show. I do wish they'd tour again with the full band.
The sound quality on this is perfect... Catches the band in all their awesomeness!! Can't wait until the London gig in November 2015!!! :)
One of the best live recordings I’ve heard. Broken Chairs is off the chains. Insane performance. I mean, at multiple times in that song my jaw just dropped. Holy crap, this is fire.
I’ll be forever in Doug’s ethereal time trap. So beautiful 👍🌹💤
These guys can really give you a tone bone, wow, killer guitar work 0:32:40 !!
I was at this show and saw them at least 3 times during SXSW 2012. I've probably seen BTS 5 or 6 times in addition. Even though this set was only 40 minutes, it is easily the best set I've ever seen them perform and the best lineup I've ever seen. It was God damn magical during those 40 minutes. One of the best SXSW moments ever.
The audio quality on this is truly magnificent. Would love to know more about how it was recorded, and why more live videos don't sound this good!
Not the first live video from Built to Spill that sounds this way
Either they've got really good Mic placement or they're doing a line out to some sort of console.
@@bandname hmm I'd reckon for sure there's a console mix involved here. It sounds way better than most, I'm wondering if there was post-production mixing or somethin'
@@garrywindshield1 sure there are many great BTS live videos on RUclips, but I'd be curious to hear others you think sound this good, in terms of the audio production. Its always subjective!
Just a lot of incompetence, really.
Been watching this for months! :) Never getting tired of it!
Listening right now! :)
i love this band with my heart and soul
This never gets old.
how fucking GREAT is this band...extraordinarily talented!
Thanks for uploading this!
This is so Brilliant!!!!!!! I love the sounds these guys make. One of a kind!
Still sends chills up my spine , rock on
Love this band. Saw them live around this time and they were sublime. Can't wait for the new album and hope they tour it in Europe
Amazing Awesome twin soloing in places near the end . a real tightly played set from a band a little new to me .... In now
...... Cheers
beautiful
Still my favorite band
29 people are nuts. I listened to it on my monitors and yes the audio quality is great.
I have one question...why doesn't this video have 30 million views??
Because most people don't have a clue how what good music actually is
2112iscoming cringe man
indie say something to you?
these guys for decades just always seem to play shows and events (A LOT of them) because the genuinely enjoy it
Fave band and this video / sound is really great!
Thanks!
WOW! Saw 'em last night, such a trip!
my favourite performance 💙
This sound is so clear and amazing. Fortunately no broken strings all guitars are alive
if there was ever a time to light your guitar on fire, its at the end of Broken Chairs.
Great Show..Time trap especially
I love this band...the creativity is god-like
Perfection
Dude looking in at 15:00. (=
Doug, "one more song" = 20 minute mind shred!!!
i like it so much.
Broken Chairs is always epic but this one is a scorcher. cant believe I havent seen this. Dug in his prime.
Magical!
Those kids outside the window are feeling it. 28:28
AWESOME
love all around
We've got plenty of time...we've got one more!
This is the real shit
~ Journey to Paradise ~
I could watch the live there’s nothing wrong with love songs all day
The Broken Chairs performance at the end, Doug asks,"How much time we have?...we need to know so we'll know how many more songs to play."
Plenty of time! Doug says, "Plenty of time? Ok..we have one more" 🤣😂
These guys are a cross between Neil Young (especially during Arc/Weld phase), Nirvana, and Radiohead, with a little of the grungy Pearl Jam thrown in for measure. They kick ass. Serious fucking ass. Great sound, great look (the beards), great show. Look forward to seeing these guys live. Thank you to uploader and to youtube for helping the band expand its fan base. Rock on & kick ass.
All those bands wish they were as cool as BTS
+david letterman ive seen BTS live 3 times and i agree with what you said! they are AMAZING!
kerileigh4 -- That is good to hear! I'd love to check them out live. Need to check their tour schedule for NYC dates. How did yo find out about them?
ive been listening to them for the past 10 years. :)
david letterman
the solo for traces is far from one of their most complex but its one of my favorites
Greatest Guitar Band Ever
My God built to spill was way better then going to summer church camp!
just so so fcking great.
Niiiiiice!
Nice
BTS is the kind of band I have always waned to be in.
Could listen to the end of my days, rip Caustic ...??
Dig this
I hear a bit of a Pixies influence in that first song? Damn, these guys are soooo good!!!
I’ve always liked them better as a 5 piece. Still great either way!
Looks like they got sponsored by Orange amplifiers! Not sure how I feel about what that's done to their sound, but whatevah I still love the hell out of these guys. Doug's a bloody genius.
It looks like only their bassist is running thru an Orange. Sounds like Doug is still using his Bassman. Goddamn his rig is so distinct and amazing sounding.
Chills at 32:40, that part is so sick
Scott Plouf looks like Dave Grohl but has the enthusiasm of Charlie Watts
last 17 minutes......bLiss
That crowd is captivated! Even the bartenders 34:34
Goddamn it, Doug
!!!
17:50 old lady munching on her sandwich like "these guys are so hip!"
MERCY
my other favorite part about this set is if you play it back at 2x speed it has hidden messages from satan.
What kind of guitar is the one with single coil and p90 and fender headstock? The guitarist on the left is playing it
Brett Netson the guitarist? It may be Hamilton Guitar, they're out of Boise, Idaho making customs--if ya look v carefully Its not a neck through, then look at the pocket there's the quintessential Fender bolted joint shape, so yeah, prob. Fender headstock. And look at that sideways jack plate--maybe to let him have free range of the bigsby. ?? what do you think?
Gotta shut it down with Broken Chairs... Dug's killer!
Is that Mark the Bagger on Doug’s shirt?
Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Riccardo Montolivo on drums?
¡Stratocaster lovers, here is our guru!
Please, What is the name of the First song?
Traces
Is that Ricky from Trailer Park Boys on his shirt?
Lol, no. That’s Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
who's on his t-shirt?
Kurt Vonnegut
@@tedheshio thanks
looks like Kurt Vonnegut
Poor Doug. His voice broke during Time Trap. I always hate to see that happen live.
Hey, you're the guy that uploads all the Modest Mouse music! Thanks for your service, lol.
My pleasure. That was a prime at-home hobby for me for quite some time. I need to get back to uploading.
Dudley McBest I have. I'm sorry if your country of residence is restricted from the videos. However, I am not the only person to have uploaded the songs from that EP. Also you could just get spotify and listen to it to your heart's content.
It's whatever. Rock n' roll
Treepeople brought me here..
Who is on Doug’s shirt?
