    Spent 20 years as a nuke machinist mate on submarines (retired in 2000). Reactors are fascinating, but I think helicopters are way more fun. When I was in, if you were a nuke and you got out of the Navy, they would not let you back in any branch of the service except the Navy as a nuke. You were lucky to get to do what you did.

    • @babyhewie
      @babyhewie 2 месяца назад

      That’s crazy! I guess I could understand that for the Navy, but it sounds strange that you wouldn’t be able to join another branch.

    This is very interesting for me because I currently have one son in the enlisted Army reserves while he pursues his education and the ROTC program and Tuesday, I go to sign the waiver to allow my youngest son to join the Navy via the nuke program. Very interesting stuff and thank you for sharing!

      As a student in Nuke school, he will have the opportunity to apply for STA-21 (a commissioning program) that has a quota reserved exclusively for nuke students. I would strongly recommend he put in his officer packet and try to knock out a few college courses between now and when he ships to Great Lakes

    • @azules9780
      @azules9780 2 месяца назад

      @@babyhewie its definitely a thought and I will bring it up to him this evening because he already has a lot of college courses completed from highschool. None of them are the GenEd classes you mentioned so maybe he can get those knocked out now before he leaves. We will investigate. Thank you for your reply.

      @@babyhewie quick follow up question with hindsight being 20/20. Would you have preferred you did that with minimal enlisted time to become a nuke officer or are you very happy with your enlisted experience which brought you to becoming an Army aviator? Basically, would you prefer to be an Army aviator or a nuclear propulsion officer?

    • @babyhewie
      @babyhewie 2 месяца назад +1

      @@azules9780 I would have pursued an officer’s commission earlier in my career as a nuke. Getting into the nuclear power program is more of a guarantee than becoming a pilot.
