  • In this episode of The Bush Bee Man, Mark is building bee hive frames. We don't like to take things too serious, so even with something like assembling bee frames, we have fun. Be sure to check out other DIY building projects videos here: • How to Build a Bee Vac...

I'm new to bee keeping. I bought a big four box hive which came disassembled. I almost chucked it all in the trash. Assembling it all was boring and tedious. I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I saw some videos where guys made it all from scratch and I thought they were nuts. So I'm glad I saw your video. Thanks for the tip about the three nails on the top bar.

You may have unintentionally created a new beekeeper.
Watching you handle literally millions of honey bees, something I come across daily in my six months of agriculture exploration, both completely broke my fear of bees and expanded my realization of my calling.
I can’t even put into words how thankful I am to have found this, Sir.

If you get to do some of the school presentations again you can have the kids assemble the frames which require all the additional fuss. :)

I think you will find that 'delicate' and 'precise' work is not what most kiddos are good at...

Nice one, I use a box in a box jig, 2 narrow staples in each end on the top bar and a wide staple on the bottom bar as I've found a narrow staple or nail sometimes collapes the groove in the bottom bar. Once assembled, I hook the frame over a slightly open bench vice and push the eyelets in. Easy as. Cheers

Crikey BBM, give me the jig every day. Having made a few thousand frames in a week, I recon this way is something to do while watching the footy. Never used a PVA or like for frames, though we use staples rather than nails to get better strength in the frames FWIW. Cheers for sharing, stay safe!

why exactly are eyelets even necessary?
I've noticed one thing all bee frames seem to have in common is the recesses cuts on the sides of the frame...whats the purpose of that feature?

How do you put the wire in and make it tight and heat the wires

Easiest way is to get a nail that fits inside the eyelet but with a flat head.. place nail into eyelet then into the hole.. a couple of bangs with the hammer and then pull the nail out.. just make sure the hole is not over the bench (I use the corner of my bench) easy as pie.. I have just made up 90 frames last weekend. Painting and finishing up next.

I have an idea on how to make the installation of those eyelets a touch easier, but I must admit I have never tried it myself. My idea is to use a drill bit (which will require you to find the index, easily the hardest part) and then find a drill bit that fits as close as you can get to the inside of the eyelet. You can drill the hole, and then just continue on and press the eyelet into the frame, and then move on to the next one. I think that the drill chuck might just be able to "press" the eyelet in. Maybe. I dunno!

Best thing is a rivet which you can pre-load a heap of eyelets on, then using a tack hammer, hammer each eyelet in and move on.

make sure your top bars fit in your boxes too.
I had one box I got from a different source that wouldn't fit my frames in.

Entertaining...but if you want to just see the assembly, go to 1:46 to see the eyelet...and then fast forward to the 7:13 mark to see it put together.

    I don't use eyelets anymore.
Put a staple in the wood just before the hole so the wire bends over it.

I would just use a press to add the eyelets

  • @roycarter6235

I recently did a hundred frames. I couldn't find the eyelets so.......................I went ahead anyway. The wire tightened up perfectly. I will check to see how they go in the hives. I made up a jig to assemble 20 frames at a time. Makes assembling 100 frames quick and easy.

  • @sentimentalbloke7586

Its all about the method mate, I assemble thousands of frames at a time and eyelets are the least of my issues, just line em up on a pin the right way around, and push them into the holes then one belt per eyelet with a tack hammer makes them snug and cozy, I spray the joints with glue and use a jig to hold then while I shoot in the staples, they come out lovely and square and tight as a drum onto the wiring jig and job done lol. Any way what else are you going to do through the cold months of winter? I just light up the pot belly in the shed, crack a stubbie and away I go happy as a proverbial pig. It is all about lifestyle and making do.
