@Gomey World Then they maybe weren't honey bees? A lot of insects "look" like honey bees with the yellow and black, but honey bees really don't attack unless you're seriously trying to hurt them. They aren't aggressive unless they feel a need to protect the hive. So if you get swarmed out and about instead of where there are hundreds buzzing, it's probably not a honey bee. Today I Found Out, a creator here, has a great video explaining some of the differences

Beekeeper here! This is generally a very informative video. But I have to chime in and say that there is a reason why the original plans for hive parts do not use glue. Wood glues and some super glues have compounds that the bees do not like, and may be toxic. Please consider using only nails and screws when constructing your hives, future viewer! And don't worry about keeping the hive air tight, the bees will cover any small openings with sap. Also, do not paint or stain the interior of the hive, or any of the frames. Bees only like to walk on raw wood!

Beekeeper here! As Bob mentioned, your local beekeeping organization will be the place to go, because regional variation is surprisingly high.
For example, many places need to paint the hives white to keep them cooler: otherwise the bees have to line up at the entrance and use their wings to circulate air as a sort of natural AC, which means the hive is less productive. Conversely, some climates paint the hives black to warm them up, and in some places the hives are painted differently on different sides, to warm them in the morning and cool them in the evening. Check with your locals to find out what works best in your area!

It's probably worth noting that a riving knife is meant to help avoid binding and kickback as a piece is split by the sawblade. The riving knife allows the material to STAY separated after it passes the length of the sawblade. If you're just cutting a dado without splitting the piece into two, it shouldn't be an issue to remove it for that cut.

    • @YunaDragneel
      @YunaDragneel 5 лет назад +8

technically yes; though the saw blade can get stuck in the dado and then the piece could get thrown back and such; Where I work the riving knife is about 2 millimeters beneath the highest point on the sawblade. Something to consider when making another hive... when rabbiting the parts to hang the frame, either do it before assembly to avoid cutting into the side's of the box frame, or fill in the parts that had to be cut out... Or be careful and use hand tools to finish the cuts...
The reason why? Bee's will fill in those holes with wax that you'll have to remove when it comes time to clean the hives some day. I used to help my father extract honey and those bee's pretty much pack every hole and void they don't need with Propalis. It's hard to remove without the right tools so save yourself some effort down the road and make every edge and corner exact. Separating the boxes with the corners packed with extra Propalis means the corner's of the bottom frame will essentially be glued to the one above it. Even with a hive tool to separate them, it can be difficult. So a well built box that has the minimum of removed material to avoid extra voids will pay off for the keeper when it comes to maintenance and later in it's lifecycle, cleaning.

Thanks for taking the time to show how to make a bee hive. I heard about this video on the Making It Podcast and have been waiting to see how you would make yours. I have been researching bee hives a lot since I have 10 acres and need to do something with it. I can totally see you making more bee hives and putting them out on the farm. Locally raised honey is great for those who suffer from allergies. I can see in now, ILTMS Local Honey. Well done

I‘ll never understand, how people can be totally relaxed and confident around those suckers.
I‘m leaning slightly back from the screen, just watching. And yes, I know, they’re not very much prone to stinging, but still. Tell that to my hippocampus. 😆
Hope, they like their new home, though!

the bees are not hard to work with if you understand what you are doing, the key things are not to agitate them and you should be fine, also the smoker helps calm the bees

honestly bees are very predictable if you understand them, note the use of the smoker, the smoke gets the bees to gorge themselves on honey and tends to make them more docile

@@TheDarkalkymist I'm really not interested in the whole operation. Just interested in knowing the results of this endeavour.
Bob could have really have offered those bees to anyone more experienced, but he decided to go the distance and keep them.
And there have been countless skills he has previously claimed to be a bigger on and taken us along for the ride (the welding cart video come to mind).
If he is willing and able, I don't see why not - he even said that at the end "maybe I'll do it, maybe I won't". And I'm here saying there might be an audience for that kind of video if he decides to do it

    • @TheDarkalkymist

@@Dudae_ ah, so you want a process video not a result video, the key thing in beekeeping is finding an experienced mentor to guide you along the process, beekeeping is like any farming venture it has it's ups and down, and a whole hosts of issues that come with it, including regular inspections by the local agriculture department

I love having bees. They’re great when you get a docile bunch, but be careful as you can sometimes get grumpy bees that are more inclined to sting and wouldn’t let you sit that close. Enjoy them though! They’re wonderful little creatures to watch and to work with ☺️ don’t forget to fill the other frames with beeswax sonits easier for them to start the new hive
