I retired almost 2 years ago from a profoundly stressful job. I was 80 pounds overweight with uncontrollable hypertension which damaged my kidneys and severe fatigue. I was unable to lose weight because of my high cortisol levels, addiction to food and feelings of inadequacy and loneliness to the point of suicidal thinking. Huge bumps started appearing all over my abdomen. I saw a surgeon and he said that my abdominal wall had completely disincarnated due to a huge buildup of visceral fat and he could not repair it until I lost 80 pounds. This motivated me to I started walking 60 minutes per day and very soon after I started feeling so much better. I rediscovered happiness and joy. Then I made the decision to give up all processed foods. I would only shop in the peripheral areas of the grocery stores, fresh vegetables, lean meats and dairy, nuts and seeds and at least one serving of fermented food per day and eating only during a 8-hour window. Present day, I have lost 80 pounds and wearing a size 6 jeans. I no longer have hypertension or depression and I had my complete abdominal wall repaired. I am off all medications and my energy level is through the roof. I believe that you need to feel some happiness before you can find success with permanent weight loss. Walking daily was my first action which led me out of my depression. No longer depressed I was able to give up the processed foods especially sugar and flour that were killing me. Last week I nailed a dream job, and my social life has really blossomed. The wisdom in this lecture is priceless and a true path to the solution for obesity, chronic diseases and depression.

Hi-I went through this during pre- menopause. From age 49-54 I gained about 12 pounds on my 5 ft frame - and it was on my belly , arms, chest and arms- places where I had never carried excess weight. My waist used to be 25 inches and it went to 29. I went through menopause officially at 54. Covid hit the world and walking curbed the boredom. I was working from home so it also got me of the house. I don't know if it has been the walking , but I lost 14 pounds, feel better than ever and play tennis and pickleball 5-6 days a week. My body looks better than when I was 45. - before all this stuff started.

I'm a year late to this video, but I've been doing intermittent fasting since this past Feb 2023, using the 18/6 formula "most of the time", and without changing what I eat, just changing when I eat, I'm down 30 lbs (and counting). I already do more protein, I don't do fast food, I grow my own sprouts and use them daily, and I'm fairly active (hiking, biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, skiing) in Colorado. Still dealing with loose bellyfat, and dealing with hair loss/thinning, but otherwise healthier than when I started the intermittent fasting at end of Feb 2023, no "sugar shakes", less bloating/cramping, sleep better. Still dealing with hot flashes and with dry crepey skin. I was plunged into menopause thanks to my hysterectomy 11 years ago, still dealing with it today.

I do it all the time, and only put noodles in it occasionally, like buckwheat, which is really good for you and high in fiber. I use cabbage, bok choy (be sure to cook it fully. It's sweet when cooked and taste like raw mustard and bitter if not), onion, broccoli, mung bean sprouts, mushrooms, cilantro, green onion and sometimes mint. Sometimes I use fresh water chestnuts, and other greens I find at my local pan Asian store.

All of your points are things I already know but it's so good to be reminded of especially as a unit, thank you! I had my last period at 49 and do not do any sort of hormone replacement other than over-the-counter progesterone and estriol cream. I'm not sure how good they are but I do know if I stop taking them I start having hot flashes again. I have aged a tremendous amount in these five years since menopause. I know my diet has not been as clean as it should be, and I have really faltered in the exercise arena after many years of being consistent so this has been such a good reminder for me. I began intermittent fasting, and eating clean, a few days ago and went back to the gym, and lifted, just today. And have been walking daily. Off to a very slow start. The older I get the longer it takes to regain what I have lost. Big bellies run in my mom's side of the family. I always had to work to keep mine flat but after menopause it's almost impossible. Personally I am just as concerned about my accelerated aging as I am my belly 😩 Can hormone replacement reverse the aging/sagging on my face? Also I have ZERO libido. My poor husband 💔 Since I'm already five years post-menopause does it make sense for me to try prescription hormone replacement at this point?

I make them different every time, but caraway seeds are my favorite. I then heat up my 4/Dash waffle maker and put 2-3 T cheddar cheese down then add just shy of a 1/4 cup of batter, then top with more cheese and then cook until done. So delicious. This recipe makes 8 chaffles. I reserve the batter in my fridge and make them over the coming days. Great on their own or for sandwiches! I'm addicted!
I also add psyllium husks to my morning "bulletproof" coffee and blend it in.

    • @haylslouise8428
      @haylslouise8428 6 месяцев назад +1

Eating a lot of fruit can lead to visceral fat accumulation, depending on your levels of testosterone. I'll explain...
Visceral fat is actually an energy source that men can gain easily thanks to testosterone. The reason why the body created this energy source is because males used to hunt, and a lot of the time, they were very long hunts so they'd have to go without food during this time. Because of men's higher testosterone levels and muscle mass, they have high metabolic rates so burn through calories a lot faster than women. Because of that, they couldn't gain subcutaneous fat, so the body created Visceral fat as an alternative, and it can only be burned after a certain period of time of no food, WHEN insulin levels drop low enough, it is resistant to calorie restriction, so cutting calories has little to no effect, it depends entirely on insulin! To gain this fat, men would eat a lot of fruit to increase their insulin levels. Sugar of any kind will increase your insulin levels, but fruit was the only option in those times. Women's bodies didn't need this fat because thanks to estrogen, we can gain subcutaneous fat, we can gain as much as we want and while men were on hunts, women would live off their body fat while they waited for food. Estrogen stops our insulin levels from spiking and that's why women with higher estrogen levels than testosterone have smaller waists, relatively flat bellies and fat on the hips, buttocks and thighs instead. A lot of women have more testosterone than estrogen due to genetics, poor ovarian function unrelated to menopause (some women's ovaries just naturally perform poorly for whatever reason), overproduction by the ovaries or adrenal glands (PCOS) etc... for this reason, women with higher testosterone levels have to eat like men used to (minus the fruit because you won't be hunting and do not need visceral fat). Men would eat more fats and protein, and less carbohydrates. You can still eat fruit, just not high quantities of it. You want to keep your sugar intake low, your carbohydrate intake low and your fat and protein intake high. This will prevent visceral fat accumulation, and fasting frequently for at least 18 hours will burn the visceral fat you already have!

I'm 42, pretty certain I'm perimenopausal, and can't shift the belly fat (or ANY fat, for that matter!).
I walk every day, don't do high intensity workouts, lift weights.
I'm eating between 100-150 grams protein every day, 25-45 grams of fibre, make and eat my own Greek yoghurt, eating more berries and vegetables.
I drink at least 2 litres of water every day.
I don't drink any sugary cold drinks.
I do have the occasional hot chocolate but have made the switch from shop-sold powders to a home-made mix of pure cocoa and stevia or monkfruit.
I feel like I'm doing all the right things but getting nowhere.
I experience debilitating migraines due to hormonal fluctuations and in the last year or so have been getting far worse symptoms with my period: nausea, painful cramps, heavy HEAVY bleeding (I can't leave the house because of it), shorter periods and shorter cycles. My period might be 3 days, and currently, my cycle has dropped from 3 weeks + 3-4 days to 3 weeks 1 day now. I've had 2 missed periods in less than 12 months.
I'm experiencing night sweats, nightmares, heart palpitations during physical activity leading up to my period, increased weakness and breathlessness during that time also, increased headaches, low mood more often, feelings of purposelessness.
I cry more and more easily, I feel like my moods are more unstable. It's like depression in my emotions, but it's not depression...
The drs have been telling me I'm perfectly fine even though I've had heavy bleeding and migraines since I was 16 years old - that's 26 years now!
One dr said, "Don't worry - you will grow out of them. You don't see 70 year old women walking around with migraines, do you?" He laughed it off flippantly! It made me hate doctors....
I feel so powerless to do anything about my own health anymore 😢 it feels like no one is listening to me.

I actually found a doctor who listened to me! She ran lots of blood tests and discovered my ferritin level is the only thing wrong. And seriously wrong!
I was deficient about 6 years ago with a count of 15. After all those years of high dose iron supplement, my ferritin was 21 this year. It should be around 100 to 150!!
She was shocked that this was my bloodwork ON the supplement and asked if I'd go for an iron infusion, and I jumped at it! I got it done and a lot of my symptoms have cleared up 🎉
I think I'll need another one because I'm starting to feel tired and a bit meh again, but I'm hopeful that things will improve even more.
I listened to another nutrition and medical expert who was saying that when our body is given what it needs to produce hormones appropriately itself, it will. Without enough iron, the thyroid doesn't function properly, which has a cascade effect on all sorts of hormonal issues!
      Here's hoping I keep improving, hey 😍

Dr Haver. I've just binged watched 5hours of interviews with you. So glad to have found you as I'm learning all about everything perimenopause and you are the bomb! You most likely read about the latest studies of the 30g protein rule. A new study (can't remember where I saw it recently on a channel similar to yours!) that it's now proven the protein continues to be moved into cells. They proved you can eat as much as you like and your body continues to gobble it up over the 30g mark, continuously until its all used up. :) Great news hey?! I've just ordered your book and I am so looking forward to reading it. Watching from London UK.

I remember reading a nutrition book in the 70's that was geared towards teenage girls and in the back of the book it had foods to eat if you want to snack. the first five foods were, eggs, chicken, hamburger, steak and tuna/fish. at the end of the list was cookie/cake. it had about twenty or more foods you had to go through to get to the cookie/cake.

Thank you so much for informing us and advocating for women’s health as it is such a very neglected area of medicine. Now please don’t pay attention to negative comments. Some women are so insecure in who they are they like to put other women down who seemingly have it better than them. Continue to spread this awareness because there are a lot of us who need your help!

Absolutely in alignment with everything you are sharing/teaching here. At the 39 min mark you pass a comment about needing to teach other doctors what you do … I’m not a doctor but a holistic nutritionist .. I like to think I’m a culinary nutritionist lol … is there any plan to consider bringing on nutritionists like myself ? I’m 46 and have naturally reached menopause officially 2 months ago ( I’m 14 months now since last period) I feel I manoeuvred through perimenopause decently but definitely not without some challenges. It’s so important to me to help other women navigate through this with soooo much self love and understanding what’s happening and what to do. I’d love to hear if there’s a way to incorporate what you’re teaching with my own clients and friends . Thank you 🙏🏻 ❤

There are SO FREAKING MANY ways to get protein as a vegan without relying on powders or pounds of lentils. Just to name a few: tofu made from soybeans, seitan (not for people with gluten intolerance), tofu made from fava beans (it is 100% protein, zero carbs or fat!), tofu made from hemp, nondairy yogurts (made from almond or coconut) and there are several good unsweetened ones including Greek style with more protein, TVP crumbles. I get over 100g daily without effort.

Don’t drink milk , wine , anti-acids anything makes you bloated😂 walk everyday if you can , count calories ‘calories in calories out’, drink water to flash hormones, less donuts ,pastry, potatoes, if you eat the cookie , eat the best looking one not a box , fibre figs , dates, etc. Anyway one orange is healthy 10 oranges is not , all yogurts suck , drink kefir. Apple cider vinegar cinnamon and a bit of lemon squeeze in a morning . Moderation is a key. Love❤

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU SO MUCH for calling out the 1 to 1.5g of protein per KILOGRAM and not POUNDS of weight. SOO many influencers on YT, even doctors on YT are mistakenly promoting 1-1.5g/lb which is almost double the true target. I challenged a doctor promoting g/lb AND intermittent fasting (2 meals a day) by pointing out that a 140lb person would need to consume nearly SIX 5oz cans of albacore tuna per day, or 3.5 FULL chicken breasts per day, in only 2 meals.

    • @barbarafairbanks4578
      @barbarafairbanks4578 Год назад +4

@littleninja71 - Unfortunately, this is the doc who seems to be misquoting protein needs.
The real deal is 1g to 1.1g high quality protein per lb of your body weight. (Or your ideal body weight, in such case that there is alot of weight to come off and you need to eat at a caloric deficit for awhile).
1.5g per lb body weight? No. Idk who is suggesting that, but there is no need for a 1.5g protein per lb body weight. (Unless you are an elite athlete training intensely 2-3x a day.)
Also, the protein s/b a complete ESAA profile protein - e.g., animal protein = 'high quality protein' per pound of body weight (or ideal body weight)
If you are doing IF, let your fast be the evening hours post dinner and overnight during sleep. Break your fast in the a.m. the next day and don't push out the fast into the afternoon - which is counter productive.
Too many people do this (fast into the afternoon hours) and it's a mistake. The body utilizes protein (& calories , overall) more efficiently in the a.m. bc of the way our Circadian Rhythm is structured - recent studies by Dr. Satchin Panda of The Salk Institute supports this finding.
So, fast overnight and start your day with a protein forward breakfast by 10am or earlier.
Forget about a 20g protein breakfast (as this dr. suggests). That will not do anything for muscle protein synthesis, which is what you need to build muscle. And you want to build muscle because muscle is a metabolic organ, and muscle signals the body to burn fat. So the more muscle we have the more fat we burn, overall. Strive for at least 30g protein breakfast.
The high protein intake is not easily attainable - especially eating at a caloric deficit - bc eating that much quality protein is calorie dense - so it's a balancing act.
Also, you will, along with fat, also lose lean body tissue. About 25% of the weight lost will be lean body tissue. It's just a fact. But, overall, you will lose more fat than lean tissue by increasing your protein intake, and exercising - zone 2 cardio, weighted resistance training, and zone 5 (high intensity) training.
Supplementing with a complete protein supplement like a good quality whey protein will help to get you where you need to be protein wise. And if you need to eat at a calorie deficit, strive for at least 1g protein per pound of your ideal (not your actual) body weight.
Frankly, imo, the best professional source we women can tap into is Dr. Stacy Sims, PhD.- her doctorate is in exercise physiology. She specializes in women's health, diet and fitness. Interestingly, she is either vegan or vegetarian - and she definitely 'walks the talk' - so the protein intake can be accomplished plant-based, ir at leastcshe has done it tgst way.
You can Google her, and/or find her YT interviews by keying in her name in YT search bar. Katie Couric recently interviewed Dr. Sims, so you can search for that interview and learn more about women's fitness. She's also written 2 books in women's fitness, 'Roar' and 'Next Level' , which is her most recent and is geared toward peri- and menopausal health/diet/fitness issues - based on female (not male) fitness studies.
