Imagine it’s 1994, no one in Europe knew what an inverted coaster was and no one had the internet back then to spoil what awaited us. As you rode the monorail into the park you were greeted by a strange alien creature, masses of upside down twisted track, rivers of blood, dramatic music and the roar of the trains screaming in and out of the trenches. This is literally one of my most treasured memories of the 90s. Words cannot describe how monumental this ride was to us because we’d never seen anything like it. I agree it’s not the best inverted coaster out there but the front row ride is still brilliant and I still look forward to riding it more than any other ride at Alton towers.
Completely agree, I remember seeing it for the first time in 1995 via the monorail and initially looking the wrong way until I got my bearings. It was, and still is, this monstrous, compact masterpiece of engineering. It's difficult to describe that feeling as a 10 year old and I've never had it since with any other attraction. Then comes the noise and the music, which are like nothing anywhere else! To this day I maintain it is still the best designed coaster on the planet. There is literally nothing wrong with it.

100% - the nostalgia factor adds a lot, but we'd never seen a marketing campaign like it. TV ads, merch, a bloody soft drink that they were selling in our high school. And that theme music...just goes to show, quality over quantity will always win. Hate that it is being sanded, it'll never sound the same again. Good review! Can't really disagree with any of your comments. The hype really stems from it's earlier days where it really was something new, special and unique. A lot of enthusiasts still seem to hold on to this opinion, as do Alton Towers themselves. Of course, 25 years later, there are better, more intense coaster experiences out there, possibly even at the same park. That's not to say that Nemesis isn't still special. It's certainly unique and still holds my UK no.1 spot. As for the water, it was dyed red for many years but caused contamination to nearby water so they now just run it clear.
I once got to ride this with John Wardley during my coaster club days when I was a teenager, the guy is genuinely really nice and happy to sit and talk about all of his coaster designs
There was a big advertising campaign on TV in the UK in the 90s when Nemesis opened and all of us who remember it as kids are visiting the park nowadays. So I think that's why it still gets a lot of hype.
I don't honestly recall the advertising campaign, but what I most certainly do remember is listening to that roar of Nemesis you hear when stood looking over it.
B&M Inverts are best in Front row for sure, especially with Coasters like Black Mamba or Nemesis you need to see whats going on to get the full experience. They are pretty sweet in the first row, but all other rows are kinda pointless for me, sure you got still the same feeling, but with all those near misses and effects around it is much more enjoyable.
I agree, I think B&M inverts tend to deliver the strongest rides and most memorable experiences in the front row. (Talon might be the one exception where I prefer the back.)
The front row is good for the first ride, but Nemesis in particular is a monster in the back at night. Not seeing where you're going adds to the experience, the coaster transcends visuals and becomes a literal tour-de-force. I might start riding all inverts in the back on my first ride from now on. I love not knowing where the ride is going and being taken by surprise.
My home park has Phaethon, one of the big B&M invert, and has great footchopper+headchopper effects in the front and that makes the front row more popular. But in the other rows I feel overrated+dizzy.
This was the one I was really looking forward to hearing your opinion on. I think I love it as much as I do because I hadn't had it hyped up to me beforehand, and that sort of thing can really bring a coaster down. That being said, I'd still count this as my favorite invert. And yes, there was a time when the creek and waterfalls were dyed Red!
I definitely agree with your opinion. Before I went to Alton Towers for the first time, I watched all sorts of different vlogs and reviews, including all Shawn's (ThemeParkWorldwide) vlogs of the park, and he and everyone else I watched hyped up this ride so much, saying it was one of the best rollercoasters in the world, ultra-intense etc. When I went on it for the first time, I was so excited from all the hype that I was quite disappointed once I got off. I mean, it was intense, but it wasn't as outstanding as I thought it was gonna be, but then I rode at the front and I was pretty blown away.
I think you have to see it in context. I was a teenager about your age when nemesis was built. That was before the internet and there were only 4 TV channels. When nemesis was on the news no one had ever seen anything like it (even though B&M had already built other coasters,) in other words, there was no need for Alton towers to invest more to make a bigger, faster, longer ride. When nemesis opened, it was like steel vengeance is today or like any great coaster of its time.
The rightmost seat on the back row is the most intense, particularly during the pull out of both corkscrews and the zero g-roll which makes this seat the best place to experience Nemesis
I have an interesting opinion on Nemesis. I rode it in Row 2, 7 and 3 or 4 (i cant remember if it was 3 or 4) and i have it ranked 4th in the park. Maybe i''ll try it in the front row next time I visit to see if my opinion on it changes.
cant believe you didnt mention the noise this thing makes, the roaring of the coaster and feeling the wind from it while queuing is what makes this thing intensely intimidating for anyone whos never rode it before, its pretty deafening in places.
JB Cobbs it's when there is another "car" with no seats in front of the front row. For example, what Alpengeist has the front. Usually the larger inverts have them.
I think the reason this ride is so hyped is because of how it used to be. I first rode it in 2009 and it was much more intense then, it was easily my favourite ride in the UK with the blood red river and just an all round better experience. Over the last 10 years it has gotten worse, especially since the paint job a few years back. I don’t think it will ever be as good as it once was again.
Nemesis for me, Mamba lacked that ‘jelly legs’ intensity that you get on a late ride on Nemesis. Nemesis has a 104 foot drop, Mamba, despite being higher off the ground, only has an 88 foot drop, so lacks that punch.
It is a great coaster. Short but very well designed and little let up. As others have said, it was built in 94 so taking that into consideration a 9/10 score is tremendous achievement. It is 12 years older than black mamba for instance. So happy that it will be retracked instead of it being rep!aced but could it be classed as the same ride?
The thing about the water. Its non toxic pond dye, I've used in my own pond waterfalls on haloween before. The pools would have all been lined and the water recirculated. Most likely just didn't bother to re dye the water every so often as every time it rains it dilutes it
. Good review I've always wondered if this ride was overrated. Not that it isn't good and I've heard that it is quite forceful but I just thought that the ride itself may not be as highly regarded as it is if it wasn't for the theming and how historical it is. I've heard the ride is accelerating for the last part of the ride, which is why it's so intense esp the end helix since you're near full speed. Idk if that's true though
Love this ride! A thing you should consider, I think it was the 2nd or 3rd b&m invert ever built (design wise, I think the first 3 were batman clones).
i had no idea it was known to be intense, this is the coaster id send a beginner to! one of my absolute favourites but intense is definitely not the word id use wow!
Out of interest, which inverts do you think are better? I haven't ridden a huge number (just this, Nemesis Inferno, Montu and Batman) but it's easily my favourite of those. It's best right at the front (for visuals) or back (for forces) though. I went on the 2nd row last time I was there and it felt noticeably weaker.
I've always wondered--is the track on Nemesis purposely rusted or is it just in need of a repaint? It sort of matches the theme so it could go either way.
The reason why it gains so much speed with a not so steep drop has to do with potential energy, which basically works so that the higher you place something, the faster its speed will be when you release it (kinetic energy).
Its my second favourite coater I've ridden after El Toro, but thats possibly a nostalgia thing. It was my first proper coaster back in 96 and the reason i think people still love it is because for 15-20 years nothing in the UK even came close. I rode Montu as well which is stastistically better but Taylor is right that the theming and terrain truly make this one of a kind. And the water used to be red... damn you budget cutbacks...! 😜
It was probably the most Intense and the best back in 1994....i rode it that year and had never seen a invert before.....the water used to be red......great ride
You forgot to mention the helix after the corkscrew! That is one powerful helix! The park has reportedly had to replace that section of track several times because of the stress from the trains.
I too am continually amazed by how much momentum is generated by such a small drop. One second you're just casually rolling off the top the next you're being whipped around that corner at what feels like 100mph.
I haven't ridden Nemesis, but Black Mamba is my favorite Roller Coaster, so I think I'll like it. Alton Towers is high on my list, Nemesis, The Smiler etc. sound really good.
Alton towers roller coasters are a textbook example of how working around limitations makes the best art. That incredibly restrictive height limit forces them to get creative with every new coaster they build leading to some of the most inventive and interesting coasters in the world. Smiler, Nemesis, Wicker Man, Galactica... they all came about because of Alton Towers had to deal with the height restriction on the park. Talk about taking a weakness and turning it into a strength.
The water used to be red for blood - it was changed as it was harmful to the local environment I think. Also, this ride is very effeicient so the queues are always short. It also has an unused single rider section, the entrance is behind the baggage racks!
On the B&M Inverts i have ridden all rows are a little bit more smooth than the front row but its still good. Cant wait for the Black mamba Review i rode it around 100 times!
I have no clue why this ride got me so nervous on my first time but it’s my favourite there.I think it’s the perfect mix of fun and intensity.Definitely don’t think it’s most intense in the world but it might’ve been back in it’s day
I'm pretty sure that the reason that it says that it is the world's most intense ride experience is because when it opened it probably was but alton towers just haven't bothered taking down the sign
Whats funny about this is that the first major coaster I rode was this in the front row, and I can't remember what it was like because I was so scared. I came back years later and got a back seat, and like you, I was hyped considering what people say about it, I was dissapointed, but I can still apreciate it for what it is. I'm sure if I came back and rode at the front I would prefer it a lot more. (Yeah smiler is the best coaster at Alton)
This had been my favorite steel coaster since 2010 until I rode Steel Vengeance but it is still a strong #2, I love Nemesis to death. I know everyone has their own opinions, heck I have Intimidator 305 near the bottom of my favirite steel coasters but I respect your opinions on this and all coasters.
Alton Towers has always been a sort of "beta testing ground" for B&M to trial their new designs and Nemesis was no exception. It was one of the first inverts in the world and it was the first to really utilise the terrain hence why it is held up even today as one of the best coasters in the world. It's crazy to think that a relatively small theme park in the middle of Staffordshire paved the way for some of the biggest and best coasters on the planet. We have the first B&M Dive Coaster, the first B&M Flying Coaster and the best themed GCI Wooden Coaster. Also the water used to be blood-red but they had problems with the dyes. In later years it ended up looking pink and eventually Alton Towers just stopped using it.
Small? Alton Towers is massive It tops Seaworld parks Cedar Point And all of the busch gardens parks Alton Towers is also bigger than Universal Orlando Safe to say Alton Towers is not small
@Yonel6969 Building wise when you look at it its small But you can't really refer to the park in general as small when apart from disney and universal Its one of the biggest in the world
I went on this for the first time scarefest 2018, I was shocked to be honest. It looks HORRIFICALLY intense and rough, but I honestly didn’t think it was that bad! It was my first upside down rollercoaster and people warned me of its intensity and how you feel like jelly when you get off, but I didn’t feel it, not even on the zero G roll. The only thing I really experienced is that I hit my ear piercing on the restraint because I’m so small (JUST above the 1.4m line, I’m 19 btw.. really embarrassing) and when I got off it was dripping blood. Other than that it was INCREDIBLE! My top favourite ride!

@@visionist7 A night ride on Nemesis does sound epic! Definitely an item for the bucket list. 👌🏾
My home park has Phaethon, one of the big B&M invert, and has great footchopper+headchopper effects in the front and that makes the front row more popular. But in the other rows I feel overrated+dizzy.
Drop: 104 fet
yes
that's a lots fet
Yeah it's pretty tall in fet than most coaster 🤣
Clearly incorrect. That first drop is 15-20ft at best.
@@KoasterKing205 we aren't talking about ft, we're talking about fet.
My first ride was this year and I was 11, and we had it in the dark. Yeah, that speaks for itself, now it’s my favourite coaster.
Love these reviews. Its weird how the 2 main UK parks have such dark theming
You have the best coaster videos on RUclips man! What cameras do you use for these shots?
Oops sorry I missed the description. Wow didn't know a6500 was capable of such shots!
thank you! It all comes down to the person using the camera- cameras are just tools. Put in the right hands, and they can do remarkable things!
All I've heard was there's a Black Mamba Review comming!!! Whoop Whoop!
Every UK enthusiast: "Oh my god ur gonna love nemesis and the swarm!"
Coaster studios: "I preferred the smiler and derren browns ghost train"
I went to England, mostly for this. (I live in NL). After I rode this ride, I bought John Wardleys book. I love it!
He has a book?
Problem with The Smiler is its fun but depending on the train you get on, it can be a real rough ride,. Nemesis has definitely stood the test of time!
3:20
The water normally is Red - But they stopped doing it over the last year or so.
Sometimes the water fall isn't working at all.
That goes for any coaster by B&M. It’s because of the track type. They call it the “B&M roar.”
I’m in Alton towers right now and did nemesis three times in a row and it is my favourite ride
Inverts that do not have a zero car are best in the front, if there is a zero car, the back is better. Hence why the front on this one was so good.
What is a zero car?
JB Cobbs it's when there is another "car" with no seats in front of the front row. For example, what Alpengeist has the front. Usually the larger inverts have them.
So apparently I'm weird in liking Alpengeist in the front more and Montu (which does not have a zero car) in the back more?
@@Icer729 Alpengeist is literally the only Invert with a zero car haha
I think the reason this ride is so hyped is because of how it used to be. I first rode it in 2009 and it was much more intense then, it was easily my favourite ride in the UK with the blood red river and just an all round better experience. Over the last 10 years it has gotten worse, especially since the paint job a few years back. I don’t think it will ever be as good as it once was again.
Nemesis vs. Black Mamba?
Mo bamba vs sicko mode
Booty Slayer that is a tough one
Nemesis for me, Mamba lacked that ‘jelly legs’ intensity that you get on a late ride on Nemesis. Nemesis has a 104 foot drop, Mamba, despite being higher off the ground, only has an 88 foot drop, so lacks that punch.
Black Mamba for me
It is a great coaster. Short but very well designed and little let up. As others have said, it was built in 94 so taking that into consideration a 9/10 score is tremendous achievement. It is 12 years older than black mamba for instance. So happy that it will be retracked instead of it being rep!aced but could it be classed as the same ride?
Goo day goo day just enjoying me crumpets and tea when meself came across coaster studios doing a British review blimin eck
Did you enjoy the drop of 104 *”fet”*
(Top left)
It’s actually Short for fetish, it’s not a typo
@@kenshin6553 but the drip is 104 feet, how is 104 a fetish😂
Wow
England feeling that appreciation,, I love this ride so so much
Love this ride! A thing you should consider, I think it was the 2nd or 3rd b&m invert ever built (design wise, I think the first 3 were batman clones).
Are we just gonna ignore how cool that thumbnail is?
i had no idea it was known to be intense, this is the coaster id send a beginner to! one of my absolute favourites but intense is definitely not the word id use wow!
It's painted that way. A couple of years ago the whole track was repainted first pure white with the ageing added in afterwards.
I’m off to Alton towers in august and I’m wondering if nemesis is a good first upside down coaster because I’ve never been on an upside down one?
Galactica
Is probably a better starter
You forgot to mention the helix after the corkscrew! That is one powerful helix! The park has reportedly had to replace that section of track several times because of the stress from the trains.
I too am continually amazed by how much momentum is generated by such a small drop. One second you're just casually rolling off the top the next you're being whipped around that corner at what feels like 100mph.
I haven't ridden Nemesis, but Black Mamba is my favorite Roller Coaster, so I think I'll like it. Alton Towers is high on my list, Nemesis, The Smiler etc. sound really good.
This is one of only a few coasters i've ridden where I actually experience brief vertigo it's nuts 😁
Can we have a review of galactica please?
Theme park Lover yeah that would be amazing
Alton towers roller coasters are a textbook example of how working around limitations makes the best art. That incredibly restrictive height limit forces them to get creative with every new coaster they build leading to some of the most inventive and interesting coasters in the world. Smiler, Nemesis, Wicker Man, Galactica... they all came about because of Alton Towers had to deal with the height restriction on the park. Talk about taking a weakness and turning it into a strength.
So glad Alton Towers is my home park :)
The water used to be red for blood - it was changed as it was harmful to the local environment I think. Also, this ride is very effeicient so the queues are always short. It also has an unused single rider section, the entrance is behind the baggage racks!
Congrats with the 120k!!!👍😂
The water was originally red but because chemicals or something getting into wildlife or something like that the had to just keep it as normal water
Taylor reviews my favourite rollercoaster!
The best part of this coaster for me is that really tight turn that dives into the trench after the first corkscrew
On the B&M Inverts i have ridden all rows are a little bit more smooth than the front row but its still good. Cant wait for the Black mamba Review i rode it around 100 times!
This is definitely high on my coaster bucket list! -Gary
Afterburn is still your favorite?
I got to see the ride with the streams being more pink than red.
Recent. Couple years ago now
This had been my favorite steel coaster since 2010 until I rode Steel Vengeance but it is still a strong #2, I love Nemesis to death.
Small? Alton Towers is massive
It tops Seaworld parks
Cedar Point
And all of the busch gardens parks
Alton Towers is also bigger than Universal Orlando
Safe to say Alton Towers is not small
@@getoutim07I dont think you realise how small towers is building wise. The park is huge but they can barely build in most of the park
@Yonel6969 Building wise when you look at it its small
But you can't really refer to the park in general as small when apart from disney and universal
Its one of the biggest in the world
I went on this for the first time scarefest 2018, I was shocked to be honest.
Robyn Louise Earl wow you're lucky to have a smooth ride on nemesis, I guess it could depend on the row. When it comes to nemesis I'm a back-seat rider
Jake Hopkins ooof. Backseat must be brutal ;-;
Robyn Louise Earl ye it is lol
@@jakehopkins6989 back row really whips you around the place, it's brilliant usually when I'm marathoning it I do the front row as it's the most smooth and comfortable and the view is mesmerizing.
I think the water actually did use to be red at some points. Love this ride, really shows that height restictions dont mean a park cant build great rides.
The water for nemesis used to be red, I don't know why they stopped that but it was cool when it was there
The water used to be red but people poured Fairy liquid (washing up liquid) in it and I think it was expensive to keep maintaining it.
Hey Taylor. About how you’re not a physics major, what is your major in Utah. I’m just curious but if you want to keep it private that’s cool too.
I am a cinema major
Even tho it is short it still packs a punch
Taylor, do you know why Alton Towers cannot build above the trees or no?
I always heard it was because of the local towns nearby
@@CoasterStudios oh I thought that it was because of Manchester Airport with low-flying planes
Not even close to manchester, just so you know lol
Conservation area Im pretty sure
Yup I was fortunate to ride this ride when the water was still red which added more of a visual bloody and darkness to the ride
I was very underwhelmed my first ride the other day, the back row changed my mind quickly
I saw that sign that said this is the most intense coaster in the world LOL
But according to Taylor that honor actually belongs to Intimidator 305, with Mindbender at Galaxyland being a close second. And he also mentioned (in his review of it) that Karnan was the most intense coaster he rode in Europe.
That sign was made in 1994
None of those rides existed at that time
