Me too. Joey's the best member of the group. I love how mom like Monica is. Whenever someone is upset or has a problem, they usually go to Monica for comfort or advice.
Phoebe and Joey are like... Platonic soulmates. They relate to each other on such a deep level. They're both playful and creative. Their dynamic is the BEST!
I second that emotion! It can be SO annoying that when you're simply friends with a member of the opposite sex, and the whole world and their mother misinterpret it, and automatically assume that you're dating. 😣
Interestingly enough, Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc wanted to add in a joke implying that Phoebe and Joey had been secretly hooking up in a "Friends with Benefits" style. While this idea was eventually rejected, the actors engaged in flirtatious banter during their scenes to indicate that it was happening.

I love the fact that Harry and Hermione's friendship is included as an example of purely-platonic male-female friendships, despite the HP screenwriter doing his upmost to code them as romantic. I always saw them as surrogate-siblings, and I'm glad most people see them that way too.
I love their friendship too! They understand each other without words sometimes and the way Hermione stuck with him in the Deathly Hallows shows that she valued her friendship with Harry very much. I don't greatly like or dislike Hermione and Ron's pairing but I love Harry and Hermione's friendship.
@@mansishukla6779 Agreed. Although I personally think Ron and Hermione is the best romantic pairing in the series. But I absolutely agree that Harry and Hermione have a great friendship (even if the film-makers did try and push Hermione into Ron's role of Harry's emotional support). Like many siblings, Harry and Hermione support each other, but often misunderstand the others emotional needs (which is why I don't understand why people think they'd make a good romantic pairing).
Their friendship is great yes, but even as a kid it was obvious they should have ended up together. Even JK has admitted as she wrote she saw it develop but forced Ron and Hermione together due to wish fulfillment.
@@IceQueen975 Oh yeah; like those times they... found each others company boring and uninteresting, that time Harry said although he liked Hermione very much 'she just wasn't the same as Ron', and all the times that Hermione was so scared of Harry's temper that she basically shut down. Their personalities make them romantically incompatible (as they are both very intense people who often find it difficult getting out of their own heads), and Harry even refers to Hermione as his sister. Oh, and Rowling didn't say she forced it; she said that it was 'wish fulfillment' because Hermione was based on her younger self and Ron was based on her childhood best friend. It's 'wish fulfillment' because someone as intense as Hermione ended up with a kind, funny, sweet person like Ron who finds her know-it-all nature attractive rather than frustrating (as Harry does). We've got seven books worth of Ron and Hermione falling in love; little too late for "should haves".
While there's a lot of emphasis on romance in media, I'm glad that Phoebe and Joey were an example of close, platonic friends, as all of the Friends being paired up together might have been too unrealistic.
I disagree. There would still be plenty of close friends left in the group - Phoebe and Chandler, Phoebe and Ross, Joey and Monica, Joey and Chandler, Joey and Ross, Ross and Chandler, Chandler and Rachel, Rachel and Phoebe, Rachel and Monica, Monica and Ross etc etc. No need to rename the show even if Joey and Phoebe became a couple.
My mom and dad were like this, I honestly believe they were platonic soulmates but they were so close people pressured them into making things romantic. Then I was born and 9 years late they divorced and hated each-other for years. They still have such well-matched senses of humour and I hope they completely mend their friendship one day.
is sounds so sad. my parents are divorced my whole life and I never knew why even they were married in the first place, they're so different as people. I would've preffered them as being friends rather than strangers
I never cared about Ross and Rachel and even grew resentful of the way everyone seemed to want to force relevance on that coupling. I actually like David Schwimmer but I couldn't stand the character Ross.
i don't mean attract any hate neither direct it here but at first Rachel was entitled and self centered and Ross had an idealized version of her and in season 3 when she wanted to do more in her life and that was not what Ross had thought so he grew insecure and tried to ruin it. Even Rachel was toxic as she too tried to sabotage his relationships, but as time went on Ross let go of his idealized version of her and got to know her more as a friend and accepted her for the way she is, Rachel too became more responsible and less self centered. so for me personally i think that at first they were toxic but then they grew up and matured. sorry if this comment was too long....
@@downsjmmyjones101 Sometimes it does, romantic relationships don't always end well. Granted friendships don't last all the time either, but just because you are friends doesn't mean you have to be with one another.
@@bethanychatman9531 I'm not saying that friends have to get together but that romantic relationships aren't the cause of platonic relationships being destroyed. Even if someone hurts someone else by cheating or controlling them, you can still be friends. My father was pretty controlling but I'm friends with him now.
I'm so glad you did this. I just think that the expectation to be "more than friends" is such an unwarranted societal pressure. Thank you for showing that pure friendships are just as valuable, if not more.
o yeah the writers didn’t put them together because they already put monica and chandler together and ross and rachel (dreadfully) ended up together too. so basically they just didn’t wanna pair up all the friends because they thought it’d be unrealistic. but i prefer joebe over ross and rachel any day.
True, plus, Lisa and Matt pitched to the writers that Phoebe and Joey had been having a "Friends with Benefits" for years. While this concept was rejected for being too cliche, the actors added flirty moments into Phoebe and Joey's interactions to indicate that it was happening.
I think Rachel and Ross actually make a lot of sense realistically. They are toxic and usually toxic relationships, unfortunately, last a long time. I’m glad they switched the romance focus to Monica and Chandler for that reason, but as much of a natural pair Phoebe and Joey are, I agree with the video that it was a smart decision to keep them platonic.
i don’t get all the ross and rachel hate. they were horrible at the beginning but they really grew by the end and it made sense for them to end up together. granted chandler and monica were waaaaay better
Agreed. Admittedly I shipped Rachel and Ross during the first one to two seasons when Ross had an unrequited crush on her, but their subsequent on and off relationship and incessant fighting was just painful to watch.
I disagree completely but I get where you are coming from. Joey and Phoebe in a romantic relationship would make absolutely no sense to me and I really prefer their platonic relationship. At the same time I think (although the writers might have overdone it sometimes) Ross and Rachel had to overcome their toxicity and that they were the perfect fit since season 1, they just needed time to overcome their personal problems individually
Yea I did ship Rachel and Ross at first but It felt like they repeated the same thing Ross like Rachel but rachel was in a serious relationship Rachel likes Ross but gets crazy jealous when Ross is with another girl Ross and Rachel argue then get together A couple eps later they get a horrible break up and Ross gets the blame
Ross and Rachel's relationship wasn't built on friendship. she didn't even know Ross as anything other than Monica's brother when the show started. And sure over time they might have called each other friend but they never had a relationship like Monica and Phoebe or Phoebe and Joey or Joey and Chandler or all three of the guys. Rachel was always too busy trying to get a job or dating or hanging out with Monica to be real friends with Ross. But that's just my take.
Ross and Racheal were an example of wish fufillment. The geeky guy getting the cheerleader girl. They just took that trope and placed it out of the context of adolescents.
I always found the Rachel and Ross pairing strange to be honest. They literally have no chemistry and don’t get along any better than any of the other Friends, when they aren’t a couple or sleeping together they hardly interact at all. I don’t understand what it is that Ross “loved” so much about her, other than her being the hot popular out of his league girl at high school. Even when he is with Julie and explains to Rachel why she shouldn’t be with Julio, he claims she deserves someone who can see how “adorable” and “sexy” she is. Damnn I would have hoped the guy who was supposed to be in love with me all of these years could think of some more awe inspiring words than adorable and sexy....and I 100% agree that it was just high school geek fantasy. But as we grow up we’re supposed to grow out of just trying to get the hottest girl in school and pair with mates we connect with on a serious and deep level, but oh well at least lots of teenage boys can have their fantasy 🤷♀️ I had a similar thing happen to me at school, a guy I hardly knew was apparently “in love” with me; and let me tell you it was not romantic or flattering. It was creepy and objectifying. What could he have possibly been in love with or attracted to about me when we never spoke and he didn’t really know anything about me? Usually when you grow up you realise it’s just infatuation or a fantasy of one person but no Friends played it out like it was real loveeee
@@Silvercentipede I don't even understand what Rachel loved so much about Ross. I just don't get it. And then when he gets with Emily there's this big deal about "I can't see my bestest best friend Rachel ever again I'm heartbroken!!!" and I'm like... the only reason why you'd be so upset it's because you're still in love with her, I have no idea what "big friendship" you're talking about 😞🔎
You missed put Joey and Rachel! They became good friends, always had each others backs! They enjoyed the same movies, books, sailing, red carpets! Joey and Monica were a sweet relationship too, caregiver style. In fact Ross and Rachel : from the beginning he is jealous of any man she is out with and is unsupportive (friendship??) Then when they go out. They do nothing together but "sleep" together. No activity (we find out later they played board games or he did go out sailing with her once) After they break up.. then they form some kind of friendship... but every interaction is laced with an undercurrent of "I dont want him/her to be with someone while I am still unhappily single"
I also think this whole "more than just friends" cliché has to do with the over-sexualisation of our society. Asexual romantic relationships are just brushed off as non-existent while in fact they do exist. And of course friendships tend to be brushed off as well. Wonderful video, thank you SO much for sharing it
Another example is Harry and Hermione from Harry Potter. People love to ship them and say they should have ended up together, but I think it’s the perfect example of having a platonic soulmate.
Fun story about Harry and Hermione before Ron and Hermione was an official thing fan website saw anything other than Harry x Hermione as ridiculous and discouraged fanfiction and disgusting of Ron x Hermione.
I agree, that's why the Take is my favourite analysis channel- it gets you thinking about ideas, analogies and symbols that you never would have noticed on a first watch!🙌💗
Kusum Sharma Romance is very important. They have a romantic friendship, just like this video explores. It helps keep the fire alive unless two individuals do not need romance. As someone who is a romantic, i need it for a relationship. Not all the time, but an effort is important.
I always loved how physically intimate the friends are with each other they touch each other so easily and casually and that always made me so jealous I always felt like my friendships were never like that
Mine were like that, non-sexual physical affection, and it made us all feel closer. I think in today's world, there would be stupid leftists wet-blanket snowflakes who would accuse people of inappropriate sexual behavior if they witnessed two people being platonically affectionate.
Before I married my wife, she and I were best of friends. There was no attractions, just pure joy to be around in each other's company. It was a scary moment when we did cross to the next level since I didn't want to lose her as a friend, but we're at 33 years and still enjoy our time together everyday.
@@simpressed5756 absolutely! When I started watching friends it was from a season when they where already married or anyway together, and they just worked so perfectly I had never questioned it (I was young and a casual watcher). Then I started it all over from the first season and I was shocked to know they were just friends at the beginning! And nobody ever implies otherwise for entire seasons. Yet they feel like Marshall and Lily, but better. And I believe Rachel and Ross are actually a good couple, they're both kinda funny and kinda awful.
@@MissMercury4872 "awful" probably only in an entertain way somehow since a main couple/romance in a sitcom will probably ALWAYS be "awful" in some way
Oh my gosh Thank you for explaining that just because a boy and a girl are friends, doesnt mean that its a bad thing or it limits them. I mean the fact that they are friends is a very special thing. So what if both if them are not hoping for "more than friends" cause i think that if you have that mindset when you build that friendship, then its not a real friendship to begin with. Yes, being in a relationship is beautiful but being on a friendship is also a different kind of beautiful. BEING IN A FRIENDSHIP IS NEVER A LOSS OR NIT ALWAYS A STARTING POINT OF SOMETHING MORE THAN THAT, IT IS ALSO AS GREAT AS AN INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP. I really hope that people are more open minded about that
@@trinaq totally In fact, when something goes wrong with your bf/gf, they are the ones whom you can cry on. Friendships like this are a real Testament that not all people in a certain type of relationships wants to attain sex or intimate feelings with someone they truly care
Okay but if you want to have a romantic relationship with someone, why should you settle down? Its not respectful to ourselves or to the other person. And that doesnt mean that you "dont apprecciate friendship". It just means you think at that person in a romantic and sexual way.
@@frankyace4371 if you have good friendship which you truly value, you will deal with your crush like a fucking grown up and it will pass. Friendships are actual love an intimacy that can last forever.
They are definitely my faves. I always loved how they were friends and so weird with each other and it never went into anything more. I grew up watching this show and didn't get some of the things. But I always related to joey and phoebe. And I think it's one of the reason that I have such a good relationships with the guys I have in my life.
sent this to my best friend bc he's a cutie and he thinks i'm a cutie as well but we're soulmates already as friends and i love that we are like phoebe and joey
I wish there were more friends couples like Joey and Phoebie. I love them. And I hate the fact that in almost every show the friendship turns into a sexual relationship.
From the first few seasons of the show, Phoebe & Joey definitely seemed more destined to be a couple than Monica & Chandler. The chemistry was undeniable.
Beside the bromance between Joey and Chandler, the connection between Joey and Phoebe was equally iconic. Those two were the real example of platonic soulmates. These two always complemented each other, uplifted each other, understood each other without even saying a word and BOTH WERE WEIRD IN A VERY UNIQUE WAY🤣 I would love if phoebe and joey were a couple, but i also love Mike...so its understandable, not all opposite gender friendships needs to end up marrying each other.Sometimes friendship itself is too strong to overpass the need of that.
I loved the points made in the video but I still ship Joey and Phoebe. To me, their story shows the tragedy of finding your soulmate but never going all the way. So you eventually meet someone new, but it's never gonna be the perfect match/relationship you could've had with your closest friend.
That is crazy. Isn't your heart big enough to love more than one person? Friendship or Marriage - they both need love to work. Sex is the cherry on top of the cake, and needed for marriage.
@@BigHenFor I dunno, I feel the same way, but the sexual aspect isn't very important for me. Like, I'm at least demisexual, and... If I had what Phoebe and Joey had with someone, and we weren't sleeping together, but we were always each other's most important person, that'd be fine by me! In fact I've had those kinds of romantic feelings without attraction, and it was like, yeah, let's just live together forever! Although that didn't happen; she was constantly busy, and I always kind of felt like she was more important to me than vice-versa, though she said I was her best friend... Anyway, I feel like the problem is that when you marry and have a family, you really become closer to that person. You spend most of your time with them, you share all your most important responsibilities... the same things are important to you. I mean, I know it doesn't always work like that, but ideally. I mean, look what happens in Friends: Phoebe marries Mike, so they start a life together, while Joey moves somewhere else, and... Besides that, it hurts to have the person who's most important to you have those kinds of affectionate feelings for someone else. I couldn't do it either way. I do think it depends on the person, though; I'm the type who, I can have a lot of friends, but there's usually one person I'm focused on.
I officially love this channel! this was such a nice summary of WHY losing a friend can be more devastating that losing a romantic partner. Your friends are your soulmates

I’m a girl and I have a best friend that’s a boy, we used to hang out sooo much but everyone thought that we had feelings for each other, making it awkward for each other making us not talk much. Even if you think people like each other, please please don’t make them feel pressured to get with each other because it almost rewind mine and my friends friendship. We are still good friends just not as close, because people think that means we like each other.
@Trey Davis Not really, we just found it awkward and didn’t talk to each other for quite a few months and then when we started talking again it was really weird because everyone thought we liked each other 😔
Did you talk openly to him about it when you guys reconnected? Maybe both of you can say that you see each other as brother/sister relationship so people stop insinuating to get together: "Listen, although we are not blood related, he feels like a brother to me. It is weird when you guys talk about us in a romantic way. It is weird for both of us. It is affecting our friendship."
@@Tagatiway We kinda talked about it but we kinda just moved on we’ve both got new friends now too we still say hi to each other and talk every now and then tho
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOREVER!!! I never cared about Ross/Rachel, and only marginally about Chandler/Monica ... but Joey/Phoebe are my everything. I love them as friends, but I'll always be salty that they didn't get together because the creators didn't want to pair everyone off. Still, I love the conclusion that Joey/Phoebe are *the* most important/defining relationship in the show *because* it proves that friendship can be just as important as romantic love.
"This really was the central defining love story of the show" AWEEE that's nice. That way of looking at it has helped me make my peace with Phoey not being endgame.
Love this take! I'm so glad they never got together as a couple. They were too much alike and I couldn't stand to see break up drama between them. I always thought their interactions were a million times more romantic than any of the sexual relationships between the others. Like the video said, their friendship, even with the physical attraction, was pure. Rare, even.
I have a very sibling-like relationship with one of my female friends. We’ve known each other since we were two. I could never date her. I love her as a sister, which yes, I think is far more important than romantic relationships.
I had a friend ask me out in high school. Went on one date, I wasn't feeling it and sadly had to reject him. We remained friends though, and a decade later I attended his wedding. After his marriage he and i still hang out to this day (playing DnD, attending small events around here, etc). I loathe the downplay of platonic friendship between a man and a woman. The pressure of expectation to get with someone I'm friends with, or the assumption that i'm romantically involved with ANY guy I'm seen with, is possibly the most annoying thing I've had to deal with growing up. Its as Phoebe says, "this" as in my friendships, is for life. Even the friend I rejected; he has obviously been though relationships over the years. I don't remember any of them by name or face and they are no longer in his life while I'm still here. I got to meet his now-wife when they first started dating, listen to him talk about her fondly, and eventually I got to see them marry. The trust I have in him will always be inherently more valuable to me than someone I'm romantically interested in - especially the older I get. If he or any of my close friends don't feel comfortable with someone I'm into, I am trusting friends' opinions over whatever rando I've known for only months.
I only watched Friends for the first time recently and loved their friendship so much. I want more platonic but still madly in love friends like this represented more often in media.
Me and my male BFF, I think we made out once but we were so drunk we don't remember well, we kiss on the cheek without asking, we complement each other's bodies and we hold hands when walking sometimes. We're both straight and I've never seen myself in a relationship with him, just doesn't match.
He is only a surrogate boyfriend for you. Once you are in a relationship your significant other will not really be happy seeing you hold hands with some random guy.
@@lilied1 loool of course we respect boundaries around significant others, we've known each other for longer than 10 years and had relationships over those years but yall sexist potatoes just here making assumptions
I’ve been in love with one of my best friends for years, and even though she’s obviously not interested it sucks that I can’t just turn those feelings off. I dunno if it’s media’s fault, or societal expectations fault, or what, but while I’ll always appreciate the friendship, “purgatory” is an apt description.
Agreed 100000% And I know cultivating a phoey, deep friendship kind of relationship would be best, but I don't know if I can. The feelings are maybe too strong
Did you actually talk about your feelings or are you assuming she is not interested? If she really isn't into you I'd suggest a healthy break from the friendship to get past those feelings
I always thought they definitely had a friends with benefits situation. I think that proves even more how their friendship was beyond anything because they could be happy for each other and love each other beyond the confines of sex, jealousy and owning each other. I am convinced the HIMYM ending is way more likely for these two than anyone else on tv
I've had cross-gender friendships with pretty women in college. My friends encouraged me to pursue it on a romantic level. But I told them I saw her as my little sister. You don't pursue your little sister. They understood what I was saying immediately.
One thing I really notice in all The Take videos on Friends is that the show was just so funny. A lot of the stuff in it hasn't aged well but that's inevitable with aging shows, it's just so funny that even these short clips that are used to demonstrate a point manage to make me laugh a lot of the time
This reminds me of one of my best friends and me. I am really attracted to him but I choose friendship over romance because we have a different belief system and I don't think we would be a good match for each other if it weren't platonic.
since season 1 basically i always thought that since Ross and Rachel were meant to be, and with joey and phoebe’s constant flirting then they must end up together. So i just kinda presumed that the only ones left were Monica and Chandler so that means that they all end up together. so sad that this didn’t come true

This part made me so happy
While there's a lot of emphasis on romance in media, I'm glad that Phoebe and Joey were an example of close, platonic friends, as all of the Friends being paired up together might have been too unrealistic.
Not unrealistic but going against the name of the show "friends" it would've been about couples if they had paired the last 2 remaining
No need to rename the show even if Joey and Phoebe became a couple.
you don’t realise how much i waited for this
Me neither, if they just added a Mondler video, then all of the couples would be complete!🙌

@Juliana Silva nope

My mom and dad were like this, I honestly believe they were platonic soulmates but they were so close people pressured them into making things romantic. Then I was born and 9 years late they divorced and hated each-other for years. They still have such well-matched senses of humour and I hope they completely mend their friendship one day.
KaylaNoelle1, What a thoughtful comment - people tend to mellow as they age, so there’s a good chance that this will happen IMO.
That's so sad!
Can you show them this comment? 🤔 maybe that would help.
is sounds so sad. my parents are divorced my whole life and I never knew why even they were married in the first place, they're so different as people. I would've preffered them as being friends rather than strangers
"Y'know, boyfriends and girlfriends are going to come and go but this....is for life"
Sums it up.
I will take Joey and Phoebe over Ross and Rachel any day.
True I also liked Rachel and Joey together
@@tysonsilvers4903 Nope.
I never cared about Ross and Rachel and even grew resentful of the way everyone seemed to want to force relevance on that coupling. I actually like David Schwimmer but I couldn't stand the character Ross.
@@tysonsilvers4903 rachel sucks she take all for granted.
i don't mean attract any hate neither direct it here but at first Rachel was entitled and self centered and Ross had an idealized version of her and in season 3 when she wanted to do more in her life and that was not what Ross had thought so he grew insecure and tried to ruin it.
I always thought pairing them up would ruin their relationship, which is the most special one in the whole show
Seconded, having all of our leads be paired would have gone against the show's title and theme, and would have been a major cliche.
Why does everyone think a romantic relationship ruins a friendship?
@@downsjmmyjones101 Sometimes it does, romantic relationships don't always end well. Granted friendships don't last all the time either, but just because you are friends doesn't mean you have to be with one another.
@@bethanychatman9531 I'm not saying that friends have to get together but that romantic relationships aren't the cause of platonic relationships being destroyed.

@@squawkington9369 yes YOU probably have NEVER been in a relationship before indeed
o yeah the writers didn’t put them together because they already put monica and chandler together and ross and rachel (dreadfully) ended up together too. so basically they just didn’t wanna pair up all the friends because they thought it’d be unrealistic. but i prefer joebe over ross and rachel any day.
Actually because they were doing the epic fail spin-off “Joey.” Perfect match with Paul Rudd for Phoebe👍
Couldn’t agree more! I think Ross and Rachel are an example of a toxic relationship.
Them getting together would’ve made way more sense than Ross and Rachel’s toxicity
Agreed. Admittedly I shipped Rachel and Ross during the first one to two seasons when Ross had an unrequited crush on her, but their subsequent on and off relationship and incessant fighting was just painful to watch.
This
I disagree completely but I get where you are coming from.
Yea I did ship Rachel and Ross at first but It felt like they repeated the same thing
Ross like Rachel but rachel was in a serious relationship
Rachel likes Ross but gets crazy jealous when Ross is with another girl
Ross and Rachel argue then get together
A couple eps later they get a horrible break up and Ross gets the blame
It was literally all Rachel's fault
But as we grow up we’re supposed to grow out of just trying to get the hottest girl in school and pair with mates we connect with on a serious and deep level, but oh well at least lots of teenage boys can have their fantasy 🤷♀️
I had a similar thing happen to me at school, a guy I hardly knew was apparently “in love” with me; and let me tell you it was not romantic or flattering.
And then when he gets with Emily there's this big deal about "I can't see my bestest best friend Rachel ever again I'm heartbroken!!!" and I'm like... the only reason why you'd be so upset it's because you're still in love with her, I have no idea what "big friendship" you're talking about 😞🔎
They may not have been friends when the show started but we're definitely friends towards the end.
You missed put Joey and Rachel! They became good friends, always had each others backs! They enjoyed the same movies, books, sailing, red carpets!
Joey and Monica were a sweet relationship too, caregiver style.
In fact Ross and Rachel : from the beginning he is jealous of any man she is out with and is unsupportive (friendship??)
Then when they go out. They do nothing together but "sleep" together. No activity (we find out later they played board games or he did go out sailing with her once)
After they break up.. then they form some kind of friendship... but every interaction is laced with an undercurrent of "I dont want him/her to be with someone while I am still unhappily single"
I also think this whole "more than just friends" cliché has to do with the over-sexualisation of our society. Asexual romantic relationships are just brushed off as non-existent while in fact they do exist. And of course friendships tend to be brushed off as well. Wonderful video, thank you SO much for sharing it

Still, I love the conclusion that Joey/Phoebe are *the* most important/defining relationship in the show *because* it proves that friendship can be just as important as romantic love.
