    Friends' Rachel Green, Monica Geller, and Phoebe Buffay are all beautiful - but the show singled out only one as the "hot one". For a long time, there was a trend on screen where, within any group of female friends - regardless of what any of them looked like - one was always upheld as the hot friend (pretty much always because she was the main love object of the story.) But this trope split off from other ‘hot girl’ tropes for one key reason: her friendships. So where did the ‘hot one’ trope even come from, and how did Rachel (with the help of Monica and Phoebe) change it for the better? (And have we finally gotten rid of it altogether?) Let’s take a deeper look at the ‘hot one’ trope!

      @sammyvictors2603 they describe it early on in the video - but basically "female friendships aren't that deep and secretly everyone is competing, usually for a man." XD; I was listening to a researched video essay yesterday on the difference between male and female friendships (this is all largely due to socialization than anything inherent to our biology btw) and it seems male friendships tend to be more "surface-level" with an emphasis on shared experience (in the physical, active sense), rather than developed through conversation and deep connection, which is encouraged in girls from a young age.

      Totally. what you said comes through a lot in HIMYM with Robin and Lily's relationship. Lily is either making jokes about wanting to make out with Robin or being jealous of Robin because Robin can eat whatever she wants and only gains weight in her boobs. The most of the writers on that show were men and it shows.

    "Hot" is not about looks it's about behavior (or perceived behavior). Rachel was the popular cheerleader, Monica was the fat friend, and Phoebe was the weird homeless girl. Regardless of how they looked, Rachel is perceived as fitting the cool girl trope.

      Exactly haha there isn't exactly a shortage of times the show points out that Monica and Phoebe are beautiful. A whole plotline is that a famous movie star finds Monica more beautiful than Rachel and so many men fall in love with Phoebe just based on her looks so I think it's kind of a poor example.

      Like Chandler said to Mon, "You're the most beautiful woman in most rooms."
      The pretty one trope usually implies that she is from a privileged background and didn’t have to work a day in her life. Neither Monica nor Phoebe had that luck. Rachel did in the beginning, which is why she is the 'pretty girl' of friends.

      That's actually a good thing to point out, but that's also why she's designated "the spoiled one" or "shallow".
      She gets dragged for that on and off screen.
      It didn't come without a price, just saying! And she hates it when people call her that.
      When Ross puts it on the infamous list, she admits that she knows she is that but she's very insecure...
      I don't know how Leonard and Sandra treated their daughters, but I'm not surprised that Rachel has insecurities. And she's still a much better person than Jill and Amy.
      Edit: Welp, except I do know and it seemed very ... The kind of stuff that would mess you up.

    • @Shadow-zf5uc
      @Shadow-zf5uc 15 дней назад +23

      Two things that singled out Rachel as the hot one were:
      1. Ross was a very popular character at the time and his love for and his on again off again relationship with Rachel was central to a lot of storylines. Plus Ross was in unrequited love with Rachel for the whole first season of the show. So the idea of men being incredibly attracted to Rachel was introduced early and frequently during the series.
      2. In real life Jennifer Aniston, who played Rachel Green, dated and married the guy who was considered literally one of the hottest men, if not the hottest man ever in Hollywood, Brad Pitt. If Jennifer Aniston is good looking enough to attract the attention and "commitment" of a young, hot, and famous Brad Pitt she must be the hottest "Friend."
      Note how in both of these examples what makes Rachel the "hot one" is not any innate personality traits she has but just popular men being interested in her both on and off screen.

    • @MatildeVallespinCasas
      @MatildeVallespinCasas 15 дней назад +5

      @@Shadow-zf5ucall that plus the fact that Rachel was meant to be an archetype before the casting and when Jennifer was chosen they carried on with the initial idea. In fact, Courtney Cox auditioned for the role until they realised that personality wise Monica was better match. Also, and talking about Ross, the creators wanted to make the cliché in movies of "geek gets the hot girl" and they had to play along(DS and JA are mote than average attractive people and she is not much more noticeably attractive than him for the trope to be believable)

Not that she always dressed oddly but moreso than the others, her outfits were less flattering, as that's the vibe the show seem to frame her with. Like it was subtly saying, "she *could* be hot if she was 'normal' but she's not because she's 'kooky' eh?" I feel like, in any other show, or just played differently on Friends, Phoebe would've been designated the snobby, hot, tall blonde model-chick or some-such.

    When we look at the hot girl, we only notice things on the surface, like her ability to attract men, but we fail to see the downside. While it may be flattering to have men gawk at you, it can also be disturbing, because you have no idea of the kind of attention you are attracting. The lovers of the hot girl love to control her and she is seen more as an object to her boyfriend/husband than a companion. Once Ross got with Rachel he was controlling, always belittled her for pursuing a career in fashion and in the end she gave up her dream career in Paris to be with Ross, while Monica and Phoebe ended up with supportive spouses. Marilyn Monroe divorced Jo DiMaggio after he beat her, it was said that he could not handle the pressure of being married to the pinup girl, Monroe’s next husband, Arthur Miller called her a horrible actress and a slut. As much as they try to glamorize this trope, there is tragedy on the other end.

      this was seen by both the show and the audience as a triumphant moment for her with fans still hoping she married the prince. the framing may not express approval entirely (although it does in many ways) but it definitely doesn't express disapproval.

    I’m sick of this trope because I do not have female friends because of it. I’ve been singled out and “picked” when I didn’t want to be, and that upset my female “friends.” I wish I could form friendships with women who aren’t threatened by the way men treat me, because I literally *cannot control it!!* I envy the kind of female friendships in shows like Friends because I would love to meet people who I didn’t get a sense were secretly competing with me, but rather who actually had my back and wanted the best for me. If you have those kind of friends, never take them for granted. You are truly blessed to have good people in your life. ❤

    I think P&P is a bad example to use. Because Jane isn't the 'special' one, she isn't the protagonist or main love object of the story, Lizzie is, who is less pretty. It isn't an example of the 'hot one' trope but actually subverting it where Austen is saying that a woman's personality, spirit and intelligence is more important in making her interesting and finding her 'love' than her looks are. And this sentiment is repeated throughout her books, except for Emma (who would be a better example of the hot one trope between her and harriet - but also a criticism of it), the protagonist or main love object is never the prettiest in the room, it is more about her character and mind that attracts her love interest. more progressive than most stories today!
    The fact that it is Lizzie saying it to Jane without any jealousy also shows how the sister's don't have that cliche jealousy for each other, appreciate and can compliment each other, and that Lizzie isn't worried at all about being the 'prettiest' - even if her pride is hurt when Darcy calls her ugly, so we know she at least likes to be considered nice looking (who doesn't), this never results in a competition between women

    One who could make the case that Joey is the hot one from the three male Friends. Although we know he has other qualities, Joey's main point of desirability is his attractiveness and while Ross and Chandler are handsome, good catches and date a lot too, they have other points that seem to "lower down" their desirability (Chandler is uptight and sardonic, Ross is neurotic and conceited). Not to mention that Matt LeBlanc fits more the conventionally attractive mold than Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer and his previous roles leaned more into the "hot guy" role than the other two.

    • @amazzonkane
      @amazzonkane 15 дней назад +6

      I don’t think being brunette counts against her in this case. I think a lot of it is the framing by the show, plus the character’s personality and perceived charisma. If anything, she’s a striking contrast and visually stands out next to the others lighter features.
      It may not have been as common I’ve seen some examples in older media, where brunettes are The Hot One.
      -Archie Comics has rich brunette city girl Veronica favored over sweet blonde, small-town Betty.
      -Mary Tyler Moore on The Mary Tyler Moore Show is portrayed as more desirable than “frumpy” Rhoda largely due to her being approachable to the point of getting taken advantage of for favors and sitcom shenanigans.
      -Lois Lane was one of the first superhero love interests.
      -There’s a movie where brunette Joan Collins is the hot, threatening love interest over the blonde “frumpy” housewife. I keep seeing clips on Facebook of a scene where the jealous wife, in tears, slaps Joan Collins who isn’t even phased and shoots her an “I already won” smile.
      - Agent 99 in Get Smart is a rare example of being framed as both hot AND smart
      - Even in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, brunette Dorothy is not actually portrayed as any less attractive. She just doesn’t play the part of the hot girl the way Lorelei (Marilyn) does. Dorothy gets just as much attention, and the attention she does get is often actually better quality.
      Nowadays, we’re refusing to be limited to The Smart One or The Hot One. We can be both.

But okay I get that the Take wants to focus on women for this topic, so they had to pick Rachel. That kinda shows maybe Friends is not the best series to pick a female example of the "hot one" because, again, that wasnt Rachel's main trope.

Therefore I could have female friends, because they seen me as no threat. Some of my "friends" even were surprised when men liked me more than them and assumed they have some yellow fever.
    After moving to Germany, that changed because there is no such thing like "German women are most beautiful in the world". Some women are not eager to be friends with me, since I'm above average Asian for them.Worst was when I studied computer science, and female students were never talked with me because I was surrounded by many male students

    it's funny that clips of Riverdale showed up cuz even before they did, I thought of the redhead -- not sure what her name was since I only saw a few episodes, a long time ago. She isn't shown in the clips but it was hilarious to me that in the cheerleader tryouts or whatever, Veronica's dance thing is supposed to be better than the one the redhead did 😂 as a dancer myself, Veronica's was a bit painful to watch, while the other girl owned it.
    So even when the directors and story try to force "the hot one" on us, we as the audience can't help but laugh in the face of it

  • @robchuk4136
    @robchuk4136 15 дней назад +1

    Them all being attractive on Friends was why singling out Rachel was funny. I preferred Monica myself, but she didn't have a hairstyle named after her, which pretty much seals the deal. Women saw Rachel as the hottest of the trio just as much as men, because I'll tell you a secret: Guys don't care about hairstyles that much to make it a fad. This video doesn't talk enough about the pride in being The Hot One, and how there can be ownership in that. I think of Sex and the City (really surprised it didn't get a mention), where The Hot One was obviously Samantha.
    And in secret agent stories like Charlie's Angels, playing up being the Hot One in the group even helps with missions. And from the male perspective, Templeton "Face" Peck from The A-Team is literally this. (Played by Bradley Cooper in the film adaptation, also arguably "The Hot One" of the friends in the Hangover movies). So sure, everybody's beautiful in their own way, and sunshine and rainbows and kumbaya yada yada. But flattening this all out has certainly been one of the contributors to media being a lot more boring to watch and talk about, that's for sure.
    So let's get down to it:
    Saved by the Bell- The Hot One: Kelly Kapowski.
    Three's Company- The Hot One: Chrissy
    The Brady Bunch- The Hot One: Marcia. Literally drives Jan nuts!
    Totally Spies!- The Hot One: Clover (I don't make the rules)
    The Fellowship of the Ring- The Hot One: Legolas. See?

    Thank you for pointing out that whilst Friends has some outdated jokes that simply don't fly anymore and it's a very cis white straight cast... it broke ground with it's female and male characters in other ways. Like challenging female roles of "hot", "house-wife" or "weirdo"... And how supportive and LOVING the male characters are with each other - a stark contrast to the way masculinity is usually portrayed, which causes more harm than good as men bottle their emotions and isolate themselves which leads to a sad reality of the biggest source of mortality of young males being suicide.
    Friends did a lot of good for the time it was created, and that's why I, a 90s kid, love it as much as I do.

I'd argue that if you have to watch how much you eat or if you're too thin or overweight as a teen or twentysomething, then you can't be considered "hot." A important part of legitimately being considered 'hot' is having an effortlessly sexy bod. That is great genetics, and more special.
