    The words you’re looking for are digital vs analog inputs. Digital inputs are either on or off (1 or 0) and analog inputs are a floating point value from 0 to 1. A flip requires an analog directional input above a certain threshold, so holding air roll below that threshold will allow an empty jump.

    • @tshupenia8940
      @tshupenia8940 Год назад +14

      You are absolutely correct! Though the analog signals from the analog stick and triggers are technically still digital! Using analog to digital converters, the controller will read the voltage output from the triggers and sticks and convert them into a digital value. For example, PlayStation has 8 bit resolution on its analog features. Meaning that the trigger untouched will put out a digital value of 0, or 00000000 in binary. and fully pressed would output a value of 255, or 11111111 in binary. Half pressed would be at 127, or 01111111 in binary. So it’s actually not a “true” analog signal, as if it was there would be infinitely many values. As you increase resolution, for example the 16 bit resolution on Xbox controllers, you gain more values! (And in turn get closer and closer to a true analog signal) For 16 bit you get 65,536 values to be exact. A true analog signal could be thought of having infinite bit resolution.
      When it’s assigned to a button press, it’s either on or off as you said. When it’s assigned to an analog feature, you gain access to 256 different rates of air roll rotation. 0 being the slowest and 255 being the fastest. (0-255 is 256 values if you were to count zero as your first step)
      I know no one asked, but it’s just a bit of insight to how these devices work!

    You can do this mechanic with both air roles using only one trigger. Let me explain, by using the same idea of the directional stall jump shown in the video we can use that same idea to air role. By slightly holding down on the left trigger with air role bound and fully holding down your other air role you can slow down the air role not bound to your trigger.

    It doesnt change a lot the gameplay. It do change a little but way much less than people tend to believe lately.
    And to focus on Zen he almost doesnt use this low rotation roll thing. Actually in game you just cant hold your L2 button like that, it goes to fast.

      Tbh, the reason people are so hyping this up is predominantly because Zen's recent success in the 1v1 scene. Also, before that he was still a monster, a newbie who is very mechanical, so what he does with his control became a hot topic.
      After a few months when players will figure out his playstyle and start countering his playstyle in the 1v1 matches, you won't see this hype regarding his control that much. So far in 1v1, he has just played a One Time Series against every opponent, if let's say Joreuz, Rezears or Mawkzy play him Again for the 2nd time, the results may differ.
      It's something people can give a try, as I did. However, like you, nothing game changing. And in all honesty, this is not really helping me/Zen anything new to do that can't be executed by what we are using currently. I mean, zen's flip reset control is not anything unlike, like someone like, let's say Joreuz or Firstkiller or Yanx or Nwpo or any of the top mechanical players. He is crazy good, but not someone exceptional in those moves, like Flip reset/Air dribble or recoveries Completely unlike other mechanical players. I felt like what he did better than other players in 1v1 is that he had a solid ground control as well as aerial one. Rather than in the air, the way he varies his pace in the ground and suddenly accelerates, really catches people off guard.
      But again, if people wanna experiment with it then power to them.

      You could bind the air-roll right to R2, and air-roll left to L2, and as you begin your half-flip, press them both at the same time briefly to counter-act the spin. Then when the car is in the air , you let one of them go to complete the half-flip. And if you want to fast-aerial, you have to make sure to press L2 briefly as you take off (if you were holding R2 already), to cancel any spinning. It is definitely more steps to cover in a short time to complete the mechanics, but definitely is very satisfying to have control of your directional air-roll.

    @peterd5901 Год назад +1

    I'm GC and used to have air roll left bound to L2 for a few months, but I truly DON'T think there is an advantage to having it there. Normal air roll overrides directional air roll, so you can just use that when you need to make a tiny adjustment, this is what all the pros currently do. BUT there are certain important disadvantages to having directional on L2:
    1. Holding reverse in air SLOWS you down. Thus, you have to use more boost to reach balls. The only way to counteract this is to also hold R2 while you're in the air, but even then it will bring you to neutral momentum. If you hold R2 in air without L2 you actually move forward slightly.
    2. It makes half flips, landing backwards, and all things reverse, much more clunky. You can basically ONLY hold reverse when you're on the ground. Never even slightly before or slightly after, or the air roll will mess you up. It takes a lot of getting used to. If you hold normal air roll at the same time as L2, it will cancel the directional, then you can hold mid-air or when half flipping and avoid the air roll mess up.
    I have watched tons of Zen clips, but I have never found an instance where he was obviously the fine tuned air roll it as mentioned in this video. He seems to only mash the button down and get the full rate of spin.
    For me, the slow-down in air, half flips, recoveries, reversing, etc, was too impacted by this and I had to change back to the standard App Jack/ Thanovic controls of square and circle, while using normal air roll for other adjustments. I think in the end there is a greater competitive advantage to the standard controls.

    I changed the binds like 2 weeks ago, and I npticed 2 problems, first is half flips, having air roll left on the same button as reverse makes it so that when you try and flip backwards it gets all weird, and second is when you have to jump backwards to get a save, it messes the fast aerial a lot, the way I see to solve these is holding the free air roll button (for me is L1) as you jump, this cancels the directional air roll. Although they have easy solutions, it makes it that you need more time to get use to the new bindings

    @broken1371 Год назад +3

    I know that this is about directional air roll but if you use the normal air roll where you are adjusting with the stick while holding the air roll button, you can do the same thing, just push the stick slightly into the direction you wanna go and you have the exact same thing with even more freedome since you are not bound to left or right only.
    For example, i use an xbox controller, have my drift/powerslide on LB and also normal air roll on LB so i can powerslide, jump and instantly start air rolling with maximum precision. Air roll right is bound to RB.

    I've been using ARL/ARR on right stick for over a year, and all the benefit you described are absolutely worth it. Best use case for AR + jump at the same time is when dropping of the wall to down-flip to the ground faster, also for micro adjustments when tornado spinning off the ground.
    It's also important to note that it is the analog value of the input that determines whether or not you flip when dodging, and not the rotational speed of the car. The dodge occurs at roughly 50% of max analog input (based on my settings), which is about half of the max roll speed when sensitivity is set to default. If you increase aerial sensitivity to let's say 10 (max), your car reaches full roll speed before hitting that 50% threshold, and can dodge w/o flipping while rotating at full speed. IMO the tradeoff isn't worth it as i like to have a wider input range and am also old and slow, but for a pro it would be worth to increase sens so that full rotational speed correlates with the dodge-flip threshold.

    • @UberDragon
      @UberDragon Год назад +4

      I don't think you're "just not good enough", I've come to the same conclusion. Braking in the air makes a difference, even if it's just a small one, and if you need to press brake down 100% to get 100% air roll left, you're definitely at a disadvantage if you want to air roll left as hard as possible the moment you jump, as you can't start pressing it before jumping without braking. Now whether those downsides compared to the advantages end out with a net positive, that's a different question to answer, but all your concerns are definitely valid.

    • @tibhamel
      @tibhamel Год назад +2

      Was looking at the comment to say that it was definitely not as big of a deal as everyone made it out to be, but I'm gonna answer your comment by actually defending this instead.
      I've had air roll left and right bound to L2 and R2 for years. If you're worried about being slowed down, I would suggest not air rolling at all. Straight line will always be the fastest. If you need to air roll for more than a quarter of a second, then speed was not your number one priority anyway.
      And judging from my experience, the sensitivity on the triggers is extremely high, meaning you'll get 100% air roll by pressing it about 30% of the way. So you can air dribble just as fast after a jump than having air roll on square for example.
      But, if you ever feel like both of these things are still worse somehow, just bind air roll right to R2. That way you keep accelerating while air rolling so you don't lose speed, and you will instantly begin air rolling as soon as you jump, since you were already pressing that button.
      I tried many times to change back, because yes there are issues with that layout, but I just can't stand having to use fat thumb, it's way too cumbersome, same for regular air roll.

    personally speaking, i have had rl since 2016 and i’m an xbox og. ive had this setting since probably early 2017 after seeing fluump talk abt the tornado spin in a video. from the start in 2017 i used LT or L2 as my air roll. so i have over 5 years experience using the trigger air roll (i will prove this if i need to.) the trigger air roll makes learning directional air roll way easier, i was a gold/plat around then and i learned exceptionally good car control for my rank really fast. i have well over 2k hours into the game now and all the concerns about half flipping, don’t bind directional left to your left trigger. i have my right air roll on my left trigger, i don’t know why i chose to do this but it makes half flipping still possible and i don’t doubt if you bound air roll left to RT or R2, that you could do the same thing. dynamic air roll is really useful and makes learning aerial car control MILES easier. i’m surprised it took that long for people to realize that triggers are dynamic inputs, i mean it’s literally apart of rl. if you hold your trigger down half way, you get half throttle. same thing for air rolling, and since braking/gas doesn’t have much effect in the air outside of recoveries.

    There are very slight increases/decreases in momentum when holding throttle/brake while in the air. If you just jump and hold brake you will noticeably go backward. Vice versa if you hold throttle. So if you are switching to this setup, keep that in mind bc you may feel slower/faster and it's not a placebo.

    I personally have air roll left and right bound to my right stick. Had it this way for a long time. This has it's downsides and caveats for sure, but it just feels really nice and comfy and I don't think I'd ever want to go back.
    Obvious caveats though is that it means look left and right have to be on buttons instead of analog controls which can be an issue for sure. That said direction looks I find are mostly used for quick peaks which is perfectly doable with the right camera speed settings. Also I find 95% of the time toggling ball cam on and off is all that's needed for camera controls. Other awkwardness is the look up and down on the same stick as air roll, however I never found much issues with it as I'm never using look up and down at the same time as air roll and the very minor camera tilts if not perfectly moving the stick left or right aren't noticeable, particularly with ball cam on.
    Really though at the end of the day, air roll on right stick just feels good to me and game feel is a big reason why I love Rocket League.

    I haven't heard anyone talk about the disadvantages of having a direction air roll on L2 yet. At this point in the meta Zen lands flat smooth and fast, at a level above almost all other players.
    However while he uses a single direction air roll on the same key as his break, it means he has trouble landing hard smooth and level. With an increase in prejumps, turns into and out of wave dashes, keeping control and staying smooth while landing hard, it is likely to be a more important style of movement
    Pressing brake shifts the cars momentum backwards slightly and this is also a extra slight bit of stability zen takes advantage of, Jstn used to use it a fair bit. This can be a drawback in some manner to potential power through the ball and flow of movement, although its not as impactful as the prior drawback. He's the best atm but depending on how the meta and other player progress there's a chance he'll be overshadowed in these aspects of the game given his binds. Not close to prevalent yet but watching his gameplay, there are also limitations.

    Hey Thano, I really hope you see this because you're the guy that tests stuff out and I feel like it's best to leave this info with you.
    I'll copy paste my comment from other replies: "Is it at all possible that that almost negligable amount of reverse input you get in the air actually helps Zen control the ball to a higher degree because he's getting ever so slightly softer touches due to slowing down a miniscule amount? I've only found a handful of people that actually acknowledged this fact and I feel like it's something severly underrated. Up until now I thought just accelerating worked in the air but if reverse works too then it's absolutely possible that part of Zen's high level of control might be due to the fact that he's slowing down slightly, not just because he has a dynamic air roll. And this honestly feels like a game changing discovery for me because if you can get _both_ softer touches _and_ slightly improved ball control on a single bind well that's kind of a big deal honestly. We need to get more high ranked people to test this stuff out because I feel like it could explode in a couple of months the same way wall dashes and zap dashes did"

    It surprises me that this comes as... a surprise, to so many people - I thought the default binding (for controller) was on trigger + thumbstick for air roll, which might not be the best for landing and control always, but its a dynamic input that allows you to move slower and slighter, more precisely, by default.
    But yeah, for keyboard and mouse players, unless you have a Wooting keyboard with dynamic inputs, you're stuck to full on 0 / 1 input and have to adjust.
    I've struggled to find a comfortable rebinding for air roll and drift to synergise nicely because I don't like the analog (0/1) air roll binds FOR this reason, which is why I stuck to default of trigger release air roll and thumbstick for control. But I might try setting it to a dynamic button for left / right rather than just air roll release, and see how it pans out with landing control.

    I had personally experimented with having air roll bound to my right stick for this reason, but obviously missed having the camera control. I never thought to put it on a trigger.

    I've known about this for a couple years but when I tried it I made the mistake of keeping accelerate and reverse on l2 and r2. It caused problems with half flips and landing properly while trying to accelerate or reverse. As well as other issues.
    I just put accelerate on r1 and and air roll right on r2 (was r1 before) and the transition was a lot easier. I've tried changing air roll binds before and it took months to return to my original skill but this was instant. I was able to easily do a rings map the moment I changed binds. Also my chain dashes were smoother with a little practice.
    Also I believe kbm players with analog keyboards can do this as well.

      Did the same thing except I kept accelerate and reverse and l2 and R2. Landing comes down to timing and is not that hard to get used to. The worst thing with this is getting bumped. A small bump that usually keeps you a bit grounded, so your wheels keep a minimum amount of contact with the ground making you stop early will now make you flying over randomly because that small amount of air you got meant you started air rolling, and before you can stop, you're already upside down on your way to the other side of the field. Good way to get better at avoiding bumps and demos though 👍

    L2 air roll is nuts. I've had a massive skill change just off this switch. Couldnt even get into posituon for a reset before and now i'm able to somewhat consistently double and sometimes triple reset. Get a decent position on the ball with air roll left and then let l2 air roll do the reset. Its awesome

    I REALLY don't want to have to go through learning new binds but as I've been practicing air roll, flip resets and wave dashes I have noticed several scenarios where I need an adjustment smaller/more fluid than what is allowed by even the quickest tap on air roll left or right and this is obviously easier and more flexible than using manual air roll and the joy stick. I just don't know if it's worth it for someone like me who only plays 6 to 8 hours a week as opposed to pros playing 6 to 8 hours a day

    • @TheAndreiCotorShow

      Imo, getting adjusted doesn't take ages, and if you play weekly, it should be sort of ingrained after like 5 weeks or so. I went from Ps4 to KBM, and it took maybe 1 month max (weekly playing) to get to my Ps4 rank. Still imo it's not bad and it's all about how much fun u have

    Holding brake (or accelerate) in the air does impact on your movement. I wonder how hard it will be to change to these controls, as it is both a change to muscle memory and how your car moves through the air

    You can also bind air roll to the right stick (both left and right) Then you dont have the 4 buttons on the right, but you can just bind jump to l1, bind power slide to pressing down the right stick and bind camera change to pressing down the left stick so you dont need those buttons anymore

    try jumping and holding L2 and R2 and see the cars movement

    One huge problem I didn't realize with this until I actually changed my settings... this makes half flipping very difficult. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has a habit of holding l2 for a while when jumping into a half flip. You have to retrain your brain to let go of L2 before you jump. Idk if this will even be possible for some, myself included.

    I use LB to activate air roll then I use the left analog stick to air roll left or air roll right and I can make it go slow or fast so it’s the same concept but I can do it either right or left as needed and not just strictly left

    For the people complaining about the speed decrease when holding l2 in the air, there is a different control scheme that fixes this. Unfortunately to really make it work, you need to have a controller with 2 or more paddles. I use the right stick for my air roll left/right, jump on r1, boost on l1, focus ball on left paddle, powerslide on right paddle, rear view on r3. I bound my paddles to l3 and the share button, allowing me to use square triangle circle and x for camera control. It sounds really weird but trust me, for anybody already used to directional air roll the transition is a breeze. This control set is already good, but if you really want to use right stick for camera there is a way to do that as well. Simply remove the gamepad bindings for camera control and use ds4windows to create 4 hotkeys with the activation trigger of ll3+rs right, up, left, down. Have each of the activators set to press the arrow keys in the virtual ds4 keyboard and map your camera to the arrow keys in game. Now you can use air roll left right on the right stick and still look around with right stick while holding l3. Takes some time to get used to but it transforms the aerial control to feel more like flying an rc plane in real life.
