this video really made me understand it even more and just two days after watching this video i have went from Diamond 3 to champ 2. i really put more time into training it. thanks for the great content man.
It feels obvious in hindsight but I never considered just.. choosing a single direction at a time and getting used to it. At this point I'm mildly used to it just from natural play but I feel that this is gonna really help me hone it in. Great vid, thanks for the tips!
Finally, an air roll video that makes sense with basic explanations. All the other videos from every single one of the big guys made this harder and more confusing, to the point I was about to give up because I clearly was not getting anywhere. I think you just made it click for me. Thank you.
This was much more helpful than just trying to remember what direction does what to your car. I was skirting around the idea of trying to only steer when my car hood was facing me, but never really got it down. Breaking it down and starting by "pressing only up" made such a difference in how I mentally decide how to control the car. Even while trying to press only up, I started to use other directions on the stick to control the car subconsciously. Thanks.
There’s a guy that wrote a fantastic thesis on directional air roll. “The Losfeld Method” - 2 hour long video. Definitely worth a watch if you actually want to learn
Rewatched your minecraft plane crash adventure series again like 8 years later. Made me tear up thinking the first time I watched it I was 9 years old. Thanks for all the memories dawg.
I know this vid is a year old.. but i'm always hoping to find "tutorial videos" that explain something in a way that helps "click" in my brain... I havnt gone in game yet to try these methods, but just your explanation alone has helped me tremendously in the questions i had. I look forward to trying these out.
bro finally someone who explains it right all other youtuber say OH GO AROUND THE RING THEN KEEP DOING KEEP DOING IT AND IT DOES NOT HELP But you just help me learn thank you and I sub
great tutorial. When learning anything it's important to look at the small steps forward, that when combined and trained lead into the leaps of skill increase.
This is the exact way it clicked for me too. I realized that up and to the right (air roll left) didn't actually turn right or down and to the right didn't turn left like so many tutorials mentioned. It's all about the orientation of your car. I started by pressing down on the joystick when I saw the top of the car. Then I started pressing down when I saw the bottom of the car. When I could fly consistently I started practicing pressing up. This is not a quick process and your brain will twist into knots because the car is spinning. Start by practicing one direction when your car is in one position. Then build onto that slowly.
Wow, and I mean wow, man. I'm only 3 minutes into your video and I've already tried out the "forward" tip, and everything just clicked in my head. You're incredible.
I am currently on the journey of learning air roll right and this is literally exactly what I did. Thank you for sharing this way of thinking to people.
holy, i was digging around youtube trying to learn air rolling and only finding tons of the same exact unhelpful videos, but when i came across this, it literally just clicked. im still not good at it but i definitely see myself learning with this way of thinking. thank you, man. subbed.
That's the way I learned it actually, I started with down input, which was a mistake because in more scenarios it's a lot more helpful to use up input in the beginning. Then I tried with tornado spin and combine these two, and then I tried to use the up input. I think this is the best way because you learn where the car goes, you start to understand that the nose of your car goes this way, and stop thinking that you need the car in a specific position to go right or left. I'm a keyboard player and the reverse tornado spin it's a little difficult to use because my air roll is in the q but 1 month later I use a lot of the other keys. When your brain does the click, it's exponential, you start to see it with another view. Thank you a lot for the video, it's a shame I didn't see it before to learn.
I remember watching your minecraft plane crash survival back when i was a little kid and thought about them again and couldn’t find you for a while but i found you again and i’m about to rewatch it for the memories
2:33 in THANK YOU SO MUCH ive been trying to use air roll for a long time and this is the first step in the right direction you are an insane legend keep it up Edit: 2 weeks in and I have finally basically mastered the front directions. Now I got backwards, left and right thats gonna need some serious work. Edit2: 3 weeks in and I have learned backwards movement, left and right are gonna take ages ( I still havent fully learnt backwards either )
@@potatoheart4428 5 months later, I can air dribble, flip reset and I have pretty decent aerial control now with this method (got c2 aswell) i was diamond 2 when i commented this its the only one ive ever understood its super simple to understand aswell good luck dude
@@JoshieBoy_ wow what a rank increase I take it learning air roll isn’t the only thing that helped but that’s an amazing milestone I’ll take this videos advice knowing it worked for you
@@potatoheart4428 Well if I remember the first time i watched this video the first thing that meant something for me was tilting my stick forward when my car was and it worked and i hadn't realised this because I didnt realise air roll was just tilting your car I thought it completely changed what your inputs do (resulting in a lot of crashes lol) so when i realised that it was pretty easy to start learning all the directions so id say it took about a few days(up to a week) for me to be confidently able to keep my car up while consistantly air rolling (using only forward movements btw) so then i learnt all the movements bit by bit and started using air roll on mechanics i had already learnt like air dribble and it helped me consistantly do those mechanics so much better. This video really did click it for me
This tutorial was super helpful, definitely the best out there for someone transitioning from free using air roll. As someone who has used feee air roll for at least 400 hours I was so confused when trying out directional air roll and wanted to give up trying to learn it. After trying the method of only taping up on the joystick to start I am finally starting to get a hang of it after a few hours of training and can do the first couple levels on the rings course now. Thank you.
this is the first helpful tutorial ive actualy ever had with this mechanic, thank you. everyone else always is like dont over due airroll and its not a very important mechanic and its like well id rather over due it to understand it then under due and be stuck in diamond so thank you
I've been playing casually since release and everytime I tried to learn this it just didn't make sense. But you litteraly rewired my brain with one sentence. Thank you, idk how you did it in less than 10min what other youtuber tried to teach in 20min+ guides.
For me I decided I was going to learn constant air roll day and committed fully to it, many days in ring maps learning to turn, many days in free play holding myself in the air, and in games I would full send constant air roll, I’d say it took me close to 2 years of doing it constantly before finally clicked and now my air control is butter. Keep it up and stay committed and you’ll get there
I'm glad to know it takes a long time. I've been playing since 2015 but only recently decided I need to learn this if I want to get to the next level. I was feeling like I was missing something since I'm champ 1 and it feels like even a lot of plats can do this, but I guess they've probably put their time in
The way I do it is I tap the normal direction when i see the roof. If I want to exaggerate that input, I flick across to the opposite side of the stick. e.g. Bottom left to Top right. So it becomes Normal-flick, Normal-flick, Normal-flick. No need to reverse the inputs in your head since the flick is just habit.
Took me a second, but I think I understand what you mean. I call this “rolling adjustments”, where to continue the turn in the same direction as you first pressed, you roll your stick in the same direction as your air roll. Check out my new video, “Massively Improve Your Air Roll”, where I talk about it some more!
I have to thank you. Literally, have watched so many fucking videos on this. But this video.. is the one that finally has me air rolling. And I'm picking it up pretty fast. Not amazing but Im already feeling comfortable. Literally I accepted I'd be max Diamond 3 in RL but now I'm feeling like I might be able to do some cool shit if I keep at practicing. Thank you.
I was watching a tip video, and the creator literally just told me to look up all of the principles they were giving tips on. I get that they're just tips, but in the amount of time they took to explain to just look it up, they could have just shown and explained how it works. This video is a bit more in depth, but you explained the jist of it in 1 minute at most.
I honestly watched alot of videos from very prominent educational youtubers but still struggled. i couldnt belive how fast it clicked for me after seeing your video! Thanks mate.
Another exercise I would suggest is learning how to control the air roll with your nose pointed up to an air roll with your nose pointed straight forward, maybe pointed slightly down. This will help transition the knowledge you gain from ring maps, to air rolling up to a shot in game.
thank you my good man. its hard finding someone who uses air roll right too. these tips are gonna help me get better atleast the using up tip, im not bad, but my fingers and brain are not yet on the level that i want it. its very difficult but with practice and hard work
This video is the key for unlocking air-roll control. I completely misunderstood how to execute this mechanic because I was told only how to steer (and they taught me it wrong!). I was unable to air-roll properly, but after understanding this, I finally did it!
I know im late but thank you so much i cannot give you enough credit for how much this video helped me a year ago when i saw it i was just starting to learn and now that im grand champ i appreciate you for making the hardest mechanic this much easier
After making my way to champ 2 on pure game sense and being hard stuck for years, I’ve recently started working on air rolls. Your vid made it “click”. Thank you!
insane video, my dumb smoth brain could not figure out air roll, I still kinda cant but with your video now I actually understand what I need to practice and how to build the muscle memory
Never thought to stop holding all direcitons, just thought you had to fully commit and press the right key at the right time and react like you're peter parker. Thanks for the help, I will practice this :)
A little tip. When asked about how to air roll, you'll hear pros mention making circles with your left joystick. Though I've seen some who have gone different methods, that circling movement is the next hurdle to climb typically.
I had this same revelation a few days ago and I can suddenly constant air roll through the easy levels of various rings maps. Still have a long way to go, but I'm glad someone is sharing this insight! Those one off tricks that other youtubers teach gives no understanding whatsoever of the mechanic
A great way to learn air rolling fast is to do neon rings or medival rings 2-3 first levels while boosting CONSTANTLY. This will make it so that you don't need to think about it and you just learn to instinctively steer the car in all positions. I learned both directions within a month pretty well and have been polishing the skills after that. Fully boosting requires very precise adjustments and you dont have time to do any "extra" spins to buy time or to wait until the car is in a familiar position. In fact, you dont even have time to analytically think about what you are doing. You will fail thousands of times but you will learn fast compared to going "slow and safely".
I would change one thing, because it caused me to get stuck at a point in learning it. When you said ONLY to adjust with the joystick up when the car hood is facing you. I think that causes you to get stuck on ONLY adjusting when the car is facing you for a long time. since you, ofc get used to it, and it is SOOO hard to get used to also adjusting when the car ISNT facing you, AKA when you see the underside of the car. I think for starters ofc its better to only adjust with the up joystick, but I think ONLY when the car hood is facing you, is a mistake. otherwise it helped me a lot, thanks!
i started with pressing down when the hood is facing me for me stick down felt easyer than stick up. later i implemented up for sharper turns. and when i get comfortable i add more motions step by step.
I've just started training air rolls, to me the main issue is not blackin out when the directions invert as I'm flying with my wheels facing me. Anyway, starting with only one stick input like you did here is key to build a fundation for muscle memory. Gj.
hi after watching a few videos about how to air roll no one talks about it barely talking about joystick movement is key thanks for explaining it correctly that it’s about joystick movement this helped me a lot this video is under rated and deserves way more views
I watched someone do this, and their roll became very robotic after years in to this style. Doesn't help for trying to flow, and transition in to reset setups ect.. In my opinion the best way to learn, and how I started learning in 2018, is by spinning around your stick, clockwise for air roll right, and anti clockwise for left. This is the basis of how mechanical players' spin. It's a flowing, rocking spin created by spinning your stick at a consistent specific pace, that is moulded constantly by seemingly unpatterned jolts to different angles of your stick, but the foundation is still a spinning of the stick. You can see this exact pattern happening, as I described, if you analyse pros streams with their controller cams. But easier said than done. I was around 14 when I learnt, so that helped with me finding the rhythm. 20 now. Now, I say the best way, but it's the best way if I'm along side you, directing you. I realise, after teaching many people my method, that as a newcomer to the art of directional air roll, it's hard to pinpoint when you're performing the helpful spin that's the basis of your directional air roll spinning. People often spin their stick too fast or too slow starting out
Actually, I take that back. It might be a helpful method what you're doing. I know the player Tox on Magnifico started by not pushing a direction, and just adjusting when needing to in 2022. But he quickly started getting it down. I don't know how he transitioned from pushing one places on a stick momentarily, to now being very good at moulding the spin for every positional scenario, but he did. Superior mind for the game I think. He apparently went from bronze to GC in 3 seasons. But yeah, I suppose it is possible. My reasoning is very anecdotal for sure.
You can see where my method of learning got me, from the moments of directional air roll spinning in my singular 3 year old video I have up on my channel
Agreed that this isn’t how you should always air roll. I made this video because it helped me understand the principles behind it. Rolling my stick continuously was something that came with time as I got faster with the “robotic” movements and was able to transition between them more smoothly. Check out my newer video where I talk about rolling adjustments, as I think that’s something you might be interested in.
AYOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! Dude try it with the method of just pushing up and goin from there in combination with slowing down the game made it FINALLY click for me!!!!!!! THANKS SOOOO MUCH!!!
i watched a bunch of these and they were all trash! i saw your comment on one of the top rocket league youtubers saying you have a way better way and you didnt disappoint! i literly understamd it in my mind. now its practice time thanks a ton! this video is a hidden gem
i practiced 4 hours every night on rings maps and it just finally started to click and i cna beat a rings map with about 2 deaths and almost full control, as long as you keep practicing it’ll click sometime
What did it for me was turning game speed down to 50% at Pilars map. Seriously, I've been trying to learn it for months, and nothing. When I turn down game speed, it just clicked in like 2 weeks. I can do Neon Rings maps to like level 10 with no deaths now while spinning, and it's been just 1 month.
Yea ive been trying to slow my game for a while but it still didnt help with other tutorials, i saw an old musty video he mentioned pillars so i went there, and with this tutorial its helping a lot more already, i can see myself actually getting it down soon and im almost 1k hours in
only recommendation: make the controller overlay bigger and put it (maybe only the left sick) much closer to the car. i had real "problems" seeing what you did with the stick and at the same instance how the car reacted because i couldn't look at both at the same time. i already knew what you were explaining, so i can't really say the video helped me lol. don't get me wrong, the tutorial is great, it's just that i find this mechanic so hard still after all these years (i play from 2015...), especially to re-stabilize after pushing a wrong direction. and once it is slightly off, i just spin out of control. really frustrating hhhh
Agreed, definitely wasn’t the best editing. Appreciate the feedback. And yeah, it’s a skill that I also never feel quite good enough at, despite all training and improvements I’ve made. Check out my newer video, “Massively Improve Your Air Roll”. Maybe something in there will help you (and the editing is a bit better)!
I think the main issue for everyone is that they expect results within the first hours of practise which obviously isn’t very realistic. I still struggle with motivation to do this for multiple days/weeks to see improvement
This method helped me get good at ring maps but has not helped me actually control the ball in normal matches. I haven't found any guides online that show the step from learning air roll control and using it to manipulate the ball in the air yet.
this feels like those old youtube videos those who really just wanna teach to the world what they learn. love it
thank you for this chill tutorial without hysterical adhd editing. i finally "get it"

Thank you for taking the time to put this online
This must be Casually Explained's gaming channel.
Great info, though! So simple, but I never picked up on it after years of playing.
Super helpful! I have never understood the other instructional videos but yours makes sense. Can't wait to get on the game and try this!
Finally THIS is the video that clicked for me
A great way to learn air rolling fast is to do neon rings or medival rings 2-3 first levels while boosting CONSTANTLY.
Bro I finnaly found this tutorial. Took me months breh
WAIT THIS MIGHT BE IT THIS MIGHT BE MY NEXT STEP
I would change one thing, because it caused me to get stuck at a point in learning it.
When you said ONLY to adjust with the joystick up when the car hood is facing you. I think that causes you to get stuck on ONLY adjusting when the car is facing you for a long time. since you, ofc get used to it, and it is SOOO hard to get used to also adjusting when the car ISNT facing you, AKA when you see the underside of the car. I think for starters ofc its better to only adjust with the up joystick, but I think ONLY when the car hood is facing you, is a mistake.
otherwise it helped me a lot, thanks!
it is my first time watching this video and i m really happy that i did thanks bro , you did a really good job you helped me a lot
1000x more helpful than anything else I’ve seen
i started with pressing down when the hood is facing me
for me stick down felt easyer than stick up.
later i implemented up for sharper turns.
and when i get comfortable i add more motions step by step.
Exactly I love this way of understanding air roll its so simple but works
I've just started training air rolls, to me the main issue is not blackin out when the directions invert as I'm flying with my wheels facing me. Anyway, starting with only one stick input like you did here is key to build a fundation for muscle memory. Gj.
I started with tapping right, but so far it’s how I learned as well.
YOU'RE A FUCKING LEGEND. AFTER 15 VIDEOS THIS ONE ACTUALLY CLICKS
Amazing job, thank you 👍
hi after watching a few videos about how to air roll no one talks about it barely talking about joystick movement is key
thanks for explaining it correctly that it’s about joystick movement this helped me a lot
this video is under rated and deserves way more views
Good explanation, thanks. Great voice, btw.
Yea ive been trying to slow my game for a while but it still didnt help with other tutorials, i saw an old musty video he mentioned pillars so i went there, and with this tutorial its helping a lot more already, i can see myself actually getting it down soon and im almost 1k hours in
very well broken down thank you bro, you helped a lot
this is exactly what I was looking for, thank you man
My tip, watch the 2h 23min deep dive explantion from LosfeldRL knowing the ins and outs eventually results in success imo
your "click" is very useful, thanks
only recommendation: make the controller overlay bigger and put it (maybe only the left sick) much closer to the car. i had real "problems" seeing what you did with the stick and at the same instance how the car reacted because i couldn't look at both at the same time.
i already knew what you were explaining, so i can't really say the video helped me lol. don't get me wrong, the tutorial is great, it's just that i find this mechanic so hard still after all these years (i play from 2015...), especially to re-stabilize after pushing a wrong direction. and once it is slightly off, i just spin out of control. really frustrating hhhh
Man that 2:34 clicked so hard. Thank you for this
The only RUclipsr that help me thank you so much♥️♥️
This method helped me get good at ring maps but has not helped me actually control the ball in normal matches. I haven't found any guides online that show the step from learning air roll control and using it to manipulate the ball in the air yet.
It's certainly not easy to make that transition. I'll think about making a video about it.
Thanks for your comment from spook Luke man this is better
For anyone still trying to make it click try slow mo in feeplay or rings so you can better see the effect of the adjustments on your car
Good tutorial bro.
