Ed really has a way with words. A full video breaking down a terribly applied paint job to a six figure car by one of his closest friends who has since passed away, and doing so in which no malice can be found. In fact, being thankful for the defects in the end
1000% agree. Pretty detailed, intriguing story.
I've always assumed he's a lawyer because of his way with words, he's so concise and never uninteresting
@@heatmoon he’s a car salesman.
Rabbit paint that car?
hey Ed, saw your car and had a convo with you at the savoy auto museum the other day. It was awesome meeting you!
Thanks for coming out!
He doesnt remember or care😂
Ed seems like a genuine guy who really appreciates his fans. @@KosherFinance
@ seems. But not
@@KosherFinance I’m not being a dick here I just genuinely wanna know if you have any proof or evidence to back this claim up
RIP Rabbit
Damnit,I almost forgot that happened thanks for the reminder 😢
I love Ed's attitude to his cars. Makes way more sense than just having them to polish in the garage.
Looks great from 30 feet though!
any plans to update the site? many things are broken.
... even with the foul ball.
Shout out to whoever was behind the camera to get some amazing B-roll shots to show the flaws you're talking about, that can't have been easy.
I like to imagine Rabbit sitting upstairs having an eternal chuckle at the parting gift he left you.

Something makes me think it's a really good webcam and not someone filming him, just by how the camera is following Ed swaying from side to side like a webcam trying to keep him hi frame.
at this point i think its become a meme.
I thought he was doing the Fight Club thing , was it that movie? When he inserts one frame into the movie theater slides to mess with people
I thought it was a joke about panel alignment from these boutique manufacturers 😄
“I’m not even sure this car was painted indoors”💀
I had expensive paint put on a kit car. I was tense every time that I heard rocks and debris hitting the car. Getting a scratch on the car was an emotional release that allowed me to be relaxed driving the car and racking up miles.
I am really liking these "PSA" and "inside information" type of videos from Ed Bolian !!
Thanks for all the information on repainting.
"Hit it harder next time Just dont hit the windshield" made me laugh more then I want to admit.
Mr.Ed on behalf of that kid and his father thank u for.cheerimg when the baseball hit the lamborghini bumper . Your a true class act
Thank you Ed for the photo op at Savoy! Your talk was phenomenal, could have listened all day long!
I love this mindset about the condition of the car.
Like the current fleet, especially that unique Spyker.
My metallic orange Diablo is much worse. It's a model kit and it took me several tries as I was learning to use the airbrush. But I love it.
I’ll address a couple of the issues
1. The doors not matching you are correct the flop of the metallic is off from being painted at a different angle. The better way to have painted the car is the paint the jams then install the doors and paint the car.
2. The rough edges that from poor paint technique and also using cheaper paint. A high end clear will have almost no orange peal even better then OEM and even done by a novice painter.
3. Fisheyes are caused by contamination on the surface not from drops of paint. A fisheye is actually the paint wicking away from that spot. Most common cause is from silicone that’s in some detailing products. Which is why body shops don’t allow silicone containing products near their shops. But it could also be from something as simple as the oils from your hands.
Was thinking the 3rd one myself, typically found in tire shine
Fisheyes vs solvent popping, they look damn near the same but caused by two very different issues. I took over painting duties at a shop about a year ago. The previous 2 painters believed they were having fish eye issues due to a detail bay being on the other end of the shop. They weren't running a filter set up on the air line in to the booth(the shop wasn't quite set up when I moved in). After adding one , i still managed to get "fish eyes". It was inconsistent , but would still happen. Eventually I ended up really waiting long intervals between coats of clear and putting the first coat on dry, all of a sudden no more fish eyes... because it was solvent popping. The clear i was using was cheap af and took forever to dry. It was the type of clear you could put down and it would look right, come back 15 minutes later and it looks completely different, because it was still moving.Even after the technique change I still couldn't get that shit to lay down flat, always orange peel, keep in mind the booth does not have temp control, it draws its air in from the shop, not outside.
After figuring that out and finding a new clear that i like the issue was eliminated. What I see on the spots on Eds car look like improper technique instead of contamination. It could have a little contamination, but the haze on some panels make it look like they used fast/spot clear when slow should have been used. Drying too fast, and reapplying too fast, putting it on to thick (depending on hardener and temp) result in a hazy finish or solvent popping. The popping, which looks like fish eyes, is air bubbles not being able to make it out of the surface of the clear because it skinned over faster than the reducer could evaporate. This is where clear coat selection comes in, they are by no means all the same. I have sprayed 120$ clear kits and 600$ clear kits ( ppg aqua base) , the only similarities between the two are you put them on after the color coats, other wise 2 different beasts.
In the last year i went from having to wet sand/ buff everything I painted to not having done any sand/buff for about 5-6 months now, except that day my clear gun blew chunks all over...but that was my fault, too long between cleanings.
Have you ever been around a car that was built for TV? How was the quality?
I used to work behind the scenes for a couple automotive tv shows, the horror stories are vast, just don't pressure wash it too hard
A fish eye isn't from a drop, it's from an unclean surface.
I attended an open house hosted by Stacey David. He was upfront that he made money selling advertising, not building cars. The cars are often assembled enough for the camera and not functioning.
Was up close with an old Pimp My Ride car at a dealer here in Houston about a decade ago. I don't think it's any secret how shoddily those cars were put together for the tv show. But it really was as bad as everyone says they are.
good from far but far from good..
Great presentation skills & personality. I cant stay attentive to videos but I was glued to yours. I appreciate the deeper POV about imperfection.
He was a car salesman.

@@VINwiki Wish I had more time to look at the "RedEDWiki" when it was at We Are Curated. I was working on the LM002.

Ed’s right, if it’s not perfect you can enjoy it more. In 1975 I bought a rough E-type, made it presentable and drove it to college. I explored its limits repeatedly, driving in ways no Jaguar owner would ever do today.
How you describe it at the end is why I like Jeeps. If I hit a rock or a tree, it's a badge and story. If someone hits sit in the grocery store parking lot I freak out and want them to pay for repairs. If I do the damage it's fun, if someone else does it, it's a crime. My prior wrangler was listed as "totaled" in an accident where a volvo driver ran a stoplight and I T-Boned them. It broke a leaf spring, broke my stinger bumper, punctured a tire, and curled up the front right fender. I had to fight the insurance company to pay for repairs. I had done worse damage playing offroad than what happened in that wreck. The paint job was Krylon ultra flat camo. I was able to repair all damage for under $1000 with basic hand tools, new tire and new leaf spring. I loved that Jeep since I didn't have to worry about scratches or dents.

Perfect upload time! Gonna watch this as I have my lunch 😂
I've loved watching these videos over the years. Mostly because of the your content, and a LOT of TopGear I started saving to get my own "supercar" when I was 10 years old. I'm about to turn 17 now, and I haven't reached anything like a supercar, but I have a nice Audi build, and now work as an apprentice tech for Toyota! Keep up the good work! It inspired me!

I just did a '77 C10 with all the up grades. The interior, engine compartment, and the rims and tire are beautiful, but the outside I have some blue, some black, a grey gelcoat hood, and some grey primer, perfect,
Ed i have two ideas for the next car trek episodes. 1. You could follow the original path of the Oregon trail. You need a vehicle that was capable of driving both on and off road and you'd cover thousands of miles. It would be in really harsh conditions to whatever you drove would really have to hold up well. The second idea that I have His drive the entire route 66 and some of the roads that replaced it. This also would cross some pretty harsh climates that would really Put any car to the test. Bonus idea. If you can get a larger budget I would love to see you guys drive across the entire European continent. From east to west.
The Lamborghini Diablo SV (or any rwd Diablo) has been one my dream cars since childhood, this one is exactly the condition I would by it in, it's good used example that I feel comfortable driving on the road and using on a track day😁🏁
not a problem i particularly expect to face any time soon, but i like listening to ed chatter 😁
Ed is a master. Few will teach us how to enjoy a supercar
Since rabbit is gone youre stuck with it , he's laughing about it from above.
All good. Both cars are gorgeous. Happy New Year.

Anyone else leaving this video to revisit some of rabbits stories RIP THE VINWIKI GOAT
you took the Vice Grip Garage approach of giving it the 112 dollar tractor paintjob. because shiney stuff is scary. You should invite Derek Bieri to come and tell some stories. call it Dereks non fictional story time
Really liked this video. Lots of great information. And imperfections and all still really like the car.
Wow, the inclusions and swirl in the roof panel are so visible when you see it reflecting the ceiling lights. The orange peel is incredible!
The reason a very high quality paint job is expensive is because they have immaculate prep. It is the most important thing when painting anything not just cars. I love the fact Ed knows its a 10 to 15 foot car lol. I am a sucker for a Diablo SV.
fisheyes are from contamination probably in the compressed air or from the painter.
Dude...get your cameraman to stand still. Just because you're rocking back and forth doesn't mean he should shift the camera to keep ya dead center. I need a Dramamine to keep from being seasick. Love the content!! Love VinWiki!
I enjoyed the first season of Rabbits show very much and was excited for the second season. But the blue haired painter guy didn't seem a great fit. He may be a great artist but his car painting abilities seemed lack luster but what bothered the "Shop Owner" in me the most was that he was always drinking out of paint cups. That's just a waste of shop supplies. I do appreciate your take on the paint job Ed.
Ed I wish you fully restore the Diablo, Its a car that surley deserve it.
Some day
"I just don't have to care" [about the car] are the best 6 words in car ownership! Goes along with my philosophy that the best trackday car is the one you can wreck and be more worried about what's for dinner than telling your wife about the car.
This is sort of like those house flipping TV shows. Looks great at the initial reveal but.....
Major problems, shortcuts and more after they leave and owner is stuck. But hey if you're happy!!
Ed: Buys a Bugatti
1 month later: Grey hair
😂
There's a real advantage in owning something that's not too precious. It's not nearly as high anxiety and perhaps even more enjoyable to drive knowing if something happens, it's no big deal. It can be used as a DD and do ramming speeds into puddles and whatnot and not freak out that one's preciously pristine is getting dirty.
Man ed has 4 amazing cars in the garage ATM. That spyker 🥵
Wow, watched that episode last night. While I loved Rabbit (RIP) I’m shocked that the show was so fake but hey, it’s what make shows like Car Trek so much better than made for TV shows
Learned a lot, thanks Ed!
I could have sworn Ed had that Lambo painted at Maaco.
That might have been an improvement.
I love Ed’s philosophy on this
You wanted Orange Metallic, you got Orange Peel
The most exciting car to drive is the one you're not stressed about! Always
I can’t be the only one impressed by the bourbon selection in Ed’s garage?
Can we think of rob telling the story of this paint job
Ed, those guys had to paint that car fast because if they didn't, THEY WERE GONNA LOSE THE SHOP!!!
Fish eyes are usually a result of silicone or oil (WD40 etc.) contamination. Occasionally solvent pop gives a similar look to fish eyes. Solvent pop is when a layer of finish has been applied before the previous layer has sufficiently flashed off or in some cases, cured. Finally orange peel is just the texture straight off the gun before color sanding and buffing. Even under the best conditions orange peel is completely normal before color sanding. Most factory finishes are not color sanded. That’s why most factory painted cars have orange peel. You won’t find a cleaner or more perfectly controlled paint line than the one in a Toyota factory and yet you still have a car that’s got that orange peel texture in the paint. Interesting video though. The pale green on the first car is lovely.
That's what we call at my work a 20-footer..ok maybe that's a 50-footer😮
"just dont hit the windshield". iLOL'd
Ed!!!!
Edit: still the fastest cost to cost cannonballer! Sorry Arni
It's an odd concept to have Lamborghini as a beater car. 🤣🤣🤣
So what you're saying is, it's the perfect "winter daily"
Fish Eyes are caused by poor prep or a compressor spitting oil, the fish eye is the paint moving away from the contaminant on the surface.
Once you see it, you can't unsee it
Here, you can't miss it!
Rip rabbit miss you buddy 😢 ❤
What is the media offline stuff??? :P
For those of you who noticed the one frame at 11:56, it said "Media Offline"
Ed you are a good person
Of all the horror stories from allowing movie studios to use cars and the way they destroy them I'm surprised you let that thing go. Cosmetically it's gotta be a headache but if they broke anything or mishandled the operation in any way that's a very expensive repair as you already know. They need to get you a new mirror that's bullshit
Love how the bourbon is in the garage. Blantons and the lp are how mistakes are made.
I stayed at a hotel in Tampa that had curtains in the exact same pattern as that shirt.
I did prep & painting vehicles for close to ten years. Most of it I learned from a painter. Who has been painting cars from his teens. When cars were still painted using brushes. Body work and painting is very bad for health.
Ruining lungs with fumes and dust. Time spent preparing any vehicle takes 95% of the very labor involved getting mirror like paint finish.
Fisheye is caused by oily or other chemical contamination on air or poorly cleaned surface. That’ll ruins the process and finish.
Silicon spray is paint shop Enemy. That causes fisheyes on paint finishes.
How to spot a bad paint job? Roll like ED. Buy stuff cheap and heavily deprecated. Run what you've got.
Fish eyes come from surface contamination. A droplet falling on the panel will simply cause a drip, or a large bump in the paint
Even though you are ok with the condition.. I would love to see how they would correct some of the defects. My new to me car has some defects that allow me to appreciate your perspective. Maybe I could drive my car in more pedestrian ways now :)
Do your garage doors not actually seal? See some gaps and light coming through. For a garage like that, seems worth it to add some weather seal to it.
If you want to improve the quality of your videos it might be a good idea to use a tripod or some sort of image stabilization rig for the cameraman. I was almost getting seasick seeing the image sway from side to side.
Aside from that, nice video!
Race cars, especially road-course, live by the 50/50 rule. From 50’ away going 50mph they look spectacular. Once you get up close to them you see where they spend the money and it certainly isn’t on anything cosmetic. Can see the raw material and previous damage through the wrap and the paint. Looks good on track but have a different expectation when you want to see them up close and personal.
Ed fight clubbed us with the single frame at 11:56 mark “media offline”
Where’s Brad Pitt?
Fisheyes are from a contaminant on the surface and the paint won't stick. Probably silicone.
4:18 "make sure the panels match" Dodge has left the chat
“Hit is harder next time!…” 😂🤣🫶
Just NOT the windshield… 🤣
Ed, that paint job is shocking. All of the trash and fisheyes are due to old filters in the booth and no dirty compressed air through the spray gun. It's a shame because a little more effort would have given 100x better result
im cracking up, hit it harder next time! hope to meet you one day.
Looks good from a distance but, it has more Fisheyes than Sea World!
I'm sure a good detailer could make that paint look better. Not perfect, there is only so much they can do, but they can make it look much better.

Hey Ed, what garage door openers are those? I am in the market for something similar like that. Great video BTW. My 993 Turbo (w/~182k) goes in for repaint next week and this was really helpful. i had it resprayed 11 years ago and was pretty good, but I notices a few things over the years that did not pop out to me at first.

Nice whiskeys on the shelf on the right!!
This is a great video, Ed. When you receive a paint job like this, even though it may be free, at what point do you care when you find more imperfections? For a car you intend to drive, does it at all matter?
If a young teen comes up to it to admire the car, do you allow them to touch it?
Fisheye is a little round almost like a crater from oil or contamination a dirt nib is from trash or dirt contamination
10 months is pretty wild
