The last portion of this story is so true. It is a very fine balance when selling a car. I personally love it and every time I do a deal it is exciting.
Doug is the best. Switchcast is something i binged for a few months until i caught up. Now it’s a long wait between those episodes. This will help me bear the time 😂
Wait, I'm confused. The title says you lost the customer but you say you didn't lose the customer? I should've expected lies from a car salesman's youtube channel, as that's all car salemen do, but yeah...
Ooooh. That’s so embarrassing when a close friend or associate does not get the joke. But it’s outright humiliating when it comes across negatively. NOT that it’s ever happened to me. LoL. Another great Doug tale.
I think it would be a good rule to not prank costumers... It's kind of disrespectful to prank them because they are your livelihood. I won't joke with that.
Good customers usually become friends, at least in the automotive industry. Not saying you should always have that point of view, but it does happen often
Believe it or not, normal honest people don't have a dilemma about not lying during business transactions. My reputation as not being a slimy liar is more important than a few dollars. The Golden rule won't fail you. If anything a reputation for honesty would make you money. People feel more at ease if they actually trust you.
Doug learned the lesson... if man with money is being cantankerous but continuing to do business with him, let him gripe, and watch him come back. The minute you call him out on it.... some eccentric people you just have to leave alone.
I don't get Dougs issue with our sales tax. I'd rather pay sales tax once, rather than get a huge bill every year to renew my registration, like in Kentucky. I had a 2015 Focus my kids drove. When my kids got newer cars I wanted to give the Focus to my best friend because his 99 Town Car is failing apart. But he couldn't afford it because Kentucky taxes you yearly based on the estimated retail value of the car, not what you paid for the car. In Ohio, I could have sold it to him for $5 and he would pay the sales tax on $5, once. It costs me the same to get plates for my 2019 Audi S5 as it does for my 07 Saab 9-3. If I lived in Kentucky, that would not be the case. Do I like paying taxes? Of course not, who does? But I'll take Ohios system over Kentuckys any day.
I think he was talking about another state where you get a credit when you trade the car in. So if you buy a car for $50k and pay $5k in sales tax, if you trade that in for $40k you get $4k back so when you buy the next $50k car you only have to pay another $1k instead of another $5k. At least that's how I understood him.
@harryschneider1760 that's how Kentucky does it, your yearly registration fees are based on the retail value of the car. An example of how messed up it is, is my buddies 99 Town Car. During covid, when used car prices skyrocketed, his registration fees increased because the state of Kentucky said his 20+ year old Lincoln with 268K miles went up in value.
@@AeroGuy07 In Canada you pay sales tax when you buy the car and that's it. We used to have yearly license plate renewal fee (a tiny amount) but that's been eliminated since after covid. a decade ago, when you purchased a car privately, you used to pay 1/2 the tax. But the used car dealers managed to persuade the government to charge the same tax on all car purchases so buying privately is no longer advantageous to most buyers.
I think it's good not to play pranks on your customer but you know what's even better? not having click bait titles on your videos is gonna be much better. it's the "almost" missing word that completely changes what in expecting from the video. I'm a long time vinwiki subscriber pls don't go clickbait
Hey my old Nissan President made the video in a random picture at 3:39. That was the first car I bought from Doug and then I traded it on my current car from Doug.... 2013 Porsche Boxster!
Reminds me of Hank Hill paying sticker price everytime until his wife talked the price down about two grand. So Hank felt betrayed by the salesman he thought was a great guy.
@@workingguy-OU812 Yeah, I think Ed and his connections have all spent their load so to speak. He/they have run out of interesting stories to tell. That’s fine if he finds the people with stories like the one you suggested. Sadly though, it seems that he’s mostly just running click bait videos to pay the bills these days.
@@overbuiltlimited Well, it comes down to finding those few people who are both car guys / gearheads and story tellers. I always wondered if I could have been on the show for an episode or two coming from the big truck sales side (new and used - used would have far, far more stories from all of us in the industry). Who knows? The Prius driver could be a bad story teller? I mean, 95 miles per gallon across a long drive is autistic territory, lol.
Had a similar issue with one of our high dollar customers. Except it was his wife... ya she didn't take the joke too well and it has been radio silence since.
Not sure what I’m more annoyed with…..the 11 minutes I wasted listening to that story or just the poor decision of clicking the video and thinking a story by Doug would actually be entertaining this time.
This guy talks exactly like a "used car salesman." Whatever that label means to you... Whatever experiences you have had... I know what experiences I have had that define the term for me. I would have not forgiven the prank. The prank would add to my subjective defintion. Its a business relationship and should be treated as such. "Business" is a much more objective and definable term.
As he said in the video the customer was also buying from different places too so if Doug didn’t sell to him some else already was! Plus it’s the customers prerogative to do as they please despite health issues!
*ALMOST*
IT ALMOST COST HIM HIS BEST CUSTOMER!
Those Bugatti payments got this man thinking differently
Remember, you’re dealing with used car salesmen here 😂
This was Click Bait episode…. Ed is trying to pay his Bugatti’s oil change.
Idk why I laughed so hard at this comment lool
I thumbed up so Ed does
You shoulda priced the car four or five or TEN times the actual value, then the joke would more likely be understood.
You should probably put "almost" in the title.
That wouldn't get clicks
He lost him for 6 months…
But then it would be as good of click bait
clickbaiting is a hard nasty habit to break apparently...
*It wouldn't be clickbait if it was an accurate title.*
The audio sync after the opening credits is way out of whack!
dont look at the mouth 👄 fixed 😂
Pretend it's a kung-fu movie.
that's just the rbf
I’m watching from my pocket at work so oh well. Here come the darkness comments section. Pocket ho!
Cannot watch because of it.
So when do we get the story about Doug losing his best customer, Vinwiki?
Doug, I applaud your dry sense of humour . . . celebrate it with those who get it for they are the funniest people around !!
"To live vicariously through" means something other than what you believe it means.
Rabbit he is not.
I’ve used Doug on some cars and loved each experience. Very easy and smooth transactions.
Ah, the new Vinwiki intro is so clean!
Apart from the awful ‘80s music
Ll
Full tax on every purchase!? That is insane!
That's just like CA where you pay tax ever time the car is sold no matter how many times it's sold on the market.
Can’t believe how good this turned out!
The last portion of this story is so true. It is a very fine balance when selling a car. I personally love it and every time I do a deal it is exciting.
Best i can do is $5, i gotta get it framed, shipped, sitting in the store for a while..
Doug is the best. Switchcast is something i binged for a few months until i caught up. Now it’s a long wait between those episodes. This will help me bear the time 😂
Love the new introduction and that subtle jab at Exotic Car Hacks lol
Not much happened in this story but it was genuinely great and I’m glad to have heard it

Always a good start when doug is on. Thanks for everything!
Good to see you again Doug!
Doug lowballing one of his best customers, summarizes used car dealers. Doug admits to lowballing him 3:33
Yeah cause it was a turd 💩
One of the things I never do, is take liberties with a good customer. It's too risky.
Growing up in Ohio, every car I ever bought privately the title said “100$”. F the tax
Perfect more for me to listen to at work
"Doug. I'll give you 70 grand for that Audi, Ahhhhhhh! My spleen!!"
I think it would be a good rule to not prank costumers... It's kind of disrespectful to prank them because they are your livelihood. I won't joke with that.

I guess it depends on what kind of costume they are wearing.
disagree without being disagreeable gosh, what a phrase.
Getting a doug story is like getting a surprise Christmas gift

California is the same on taxing car purchases, so you ain't alone Doug.
.
Cali is definitely running for the gayest state.
Why put a misleading title on a channel of this caliber???
Because, it's not the caliber you for some reason think it is.
@@notj5712 honestly I've never really cared for this channel and only once in a blue moon watch a video but everybody else seems to obsess 😅

I can binge these videos all day!
That’s my biggest problem with people I be making jokes and they don’t laugh they just get mad
Doug is one of the BEST storytellers, truly entertaining!
Appreciate that, I thought this was one of my worst-told!
Yes, you do tell the customer about every scratch! It’s called disclosure FFS.
Shots fired 😳 👀 😬 🤪 "exotic car hacks" 😆
Pretty damned funny, Doug. You made your point.
"I ALMOST lost him though, on a practical joke." -How about we advertise honestly; what-say, Ed?

Tough to beat Ed, but I think this guy is my favorite storyteller.

Making a poor joke that nearly lost me a ton of money, sounds exactly like something I would do 😂
A Doug story is always a treat!
Doug is secretly employing the Ferrari model of sales. Customer buys the car, but the car will stay in Doug’s storage.
Meeting strangers in rest stops!! LOL
Great basic “salesman” advice. It’s really a struggle even if you’re sincere. Because it takes 2 hands to clap 👏. 🙏
This video made me very conscious about how I come across to people in real life 😳
why are you click baiting with Michael jordans pic??
I oncecscrewed myself out of a payday by telling my 'boss's" cohort that the other boss paid me weakly.

Gotta pay for that Bug somehow.
What do you say when you can't find your keys? "I lost my keys!" Then you find them again.
You call it a dry sense of humor and I call it nauseating 😅
What's with the colour grade in this video!!! Shocking!

Best customer must mean, more money than sense
Three of the most painful words in the English language…You got taken 😮
He’s just going around to used car lots at this point and asking the first salesman that approaches him to tell there story
Fing RBF is a training video I show all my new hires.

I only clicked because there was a GT3RS in the thumbnail, hear a story about a bunch of regular traffic
