மேற்கு தொடர்ச்சி மலையில் அமைந்துள்ள நீலகிரி மாவட்டத்தில் வாழும் தோடாஸ் பழங்குடி மக்கள் வாழக்கை முறையை பற்றி இந்த பதிவில் பார்க்கலாம். காட்டிமந்து என்னும் கிராமத்தில் இரண்டே வீடுகள் உள்ளது, அதில் வாழும் ஒரு முதியவர் இந்த தோடாஸ்பழங்குடி மக்களின் வாழ்க்கை முறையை தெளிவாக இந்த காணொளியில் விவரிக்கிறார்.
தோடா மக்கள் தென்னிந்தியாவில் உள்ள தமிழ்நாடு மாநிலத்தில் வாழும் ஒரு திராவிட இனக்குழு ஆகும் . 18 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு மற்றும் பிரிட்டிஷ் காலனித்துவத்திற்கு முன்பு, தோடா, கோட்டா , படகா மற்றும் குரும்பா உள்ளிட்ட பிற இன சமூகங்களுடன் உள்நாட்டில் இணைந்து வாழ்ந்தனர் . 20 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில், தோடா மக்கள் தொகை 700 முதல் 900 வரை இருந்தது. இந்தியாவின் பெரிய மக்கள்தொகையில் ஒரு சிறிய பகுதியினர் என்றாலும், 19 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டின் முற்பகுதியில் இருந்து தோடாக்கள் "மானுடவியலாளர்கள் மற்றும் பிற அறிஞர்களின் கவனத்தை மிகவும் ஈர்த்துள்ளனர். அவர்களின் இனவியல் மாறுபாடு" மற்றும் "தோற்றம், பழக்கவழக்கங்கள் மற்றும் பழக்கவழக்கங்கள் ஆகியவற்றில் அண்டை வீட்டாரைப் போல் இல்லாதது".மானுடவியலாளர்கள் மற்றும் மொழியியலாளர்களால் அவர்களின் கலாச்சாரத்தின் ஆய்வு சமூக மானுடவியல் மற்றும் இனவியல் துறைகளை வளர்ப்பதில் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கதாக நிரூபிக்கப்பட்டது .
தோடாக்கள் பாரம்பரியமாக முண்ட் என்று அழைக்கப்படும் குடியிருப்புகளில் வாழ்கின்றனர் , இதில் மூன்று முதல் ஏழு சிறிய ஓலை வீடுகள் உள்ளன, அவை அரை பீப்பாய்களின் வடிவத்தில் கட்டப்பட்டு மேய்ச்சலின் சரிவுகளில் அமைந்துள்ளன , அதில் அவர்கள் வீட்டு எருமைகளை வளர்க்கிறார்கள். அவர்களின் பொருளாதாரம் எருமை மாடுகளை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டது, அதன் பால் பொருட்களை அவர்கள் நீலகிரி மலையின் அண்டை மக்களுடன் வர்த்தகம் செய்தனர் . தோடா மதம் புனிதமான எருமையைக் கொண்டுள்ளது ; இதன் விளைவாக, அனைத்து பால் நடவடிக்கைகளுக்கும், பால் பண்ணையாளர்கள்-பூசாரிகளின் நியமனத்திற்கும் சடங்குகள் செய்யப்படுகின்றன. மத மற்றும் இறுதி சடங்குகள் சமூக சூழலை வழங்குகின்றன, இதில் எருமையின் வழிபாட்டு முறை பற்றிய சிக்கலான கவிதை பாடல்கள் இயற்றப்பட்டு பாடப்படுகின்றன.

Toda people are a Dravidian ethnic group who live in the State of Tamil Nadu in southern India. Before the 18th century and British colonisation, the Toda coexisted locally with other ethnic communities, including the Kota, Badaga and Kurumba. During the 20th century, the Toda population has hovered in the range 700 to 900. Although an insignificant fraction of the large population of India, since the early 19th century the Toda have attracted "a most disproportionate amount of attention from anthropologists and other scholars because of their ethnological aberrancy" and "their unlikeness to their neighbours in appearance, manners, and customs".The study of their culture by anthropologists and linguists proved significant in developing the fields of social anthropology and ethnomusicology.
The Toda traditionally live in settlements called mund, consisting of three to seven small thatched houses, constructed in the shape of half-barrels and located across the slopes of the pasture, on which they keep domestic buffalo. Their economy was pastoral, based on the buffalo, whose dairy products they traded with neighbouring peoples of the Nilgiri Hills. Toda religion features the sacred buffalo; consequently, rituals are performed for all dairy activities as well as for the ordination of dairymen-priests. The religious and funerary rites provide the social context in which complex poetic songs about the cult of the buffalo are composed and chanted.
Fraternal polyandry in traditional Toda society was fairly common; however, this practice has now been totally abandoned, as has female infanticide. During the last quarter of the 20th century, some Toda pasture land was lost due to outsiders using it for agriculture[4] or afforestation by the State Government of Tamil Nadu. This has threatened to undermine Toda culture by greatly diminishing the buffalo herds. Since the early 21st century, Toda society and culture have been the focus of an international effort at culturally sensitive environmental restoration.The Toda lands are now a part of The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-designated International Biosphere Reserve; their territory is declared UNESCO World Heritage Site.
