    I've spent 3 years constantly experimenting & pondering these settings (and pids). Even though I know this stuff, I still have to stop & really think about it sometimes especially when trying to explain it to others. The way you articulated it all is just fantastic man (especially summing it up at 17:13). VERY appreciated.

    Man, you can not imagine the funcking big impact on the race performance I got moving the rates as low as you tell!!! I have flown not for a very big time, but its unbelibable, than i did not realized that before this video. I have seen tons of your videos, but this one made my day. Not made my entre flight time. Thanks a lot!!!!!

    Whoa, you do a fantastic job explaining the rates. Just getting into freestyle FPV and I am addicted. Going to try your different rates see how I like them over your old rates. You add more to this hobby then anyone else on the internet. I highly respect all the work that goes into your videos. They are all extremely educational. Keep up the great work. I will be supporting you in the near future, because you deserve it!!!

    since i read your blog i have been trying to race with race rate. i have not been successfull until i watched this video. i was using s rate to get the degree/s i needed.. the problem was the middle is too sluggish and i had to more the stick further away from centre and then the rate jump. today i used rc rate to achieve the degree/s i wanted and used a bit of expo to slightly soften the middle while keeping the rest of the curve relatively linear. oh man it was great. thanks so much!

    Thank you, great video. I used the settings from your BetaFlight ultimate guide tutorial to fly in simulation with my taranis, I ended up bumping the pitch and roll to 1080dps and the yaw to something between 7 or 800dps. Worked wonders! To top it off today I went out with my neighbour to fly his drones, it was my first time flying a drone whilst my own talon is waiting for last parts to complete it. He congratulated me on the amount of control I had over his drones and how I was flying, all I said was “Joshua Bardwell tutorials and simulator time” I was honestly surprised to how well the flights went, it was only line of sight but now I have the confidence to maiden the Talon, all thanks to your advice. Honestly these videos are so so valuable. I’d say 80 to 90% of what I know is because of your channel from software & hardware to soldering techniques.

    After watching this video, I went to Liftoff and played with the rates. I increased my rates for freestyle flying and decreased my rates and tried racing. Holy cow! You're right, with the lower rates I shaved several seconds off my best lap times and with higher rates my freestyle flying felt more like how I want it to. Thanks for the education!

    Excellent job on explaining these values. I am definitely more of what I would call a "precision flyer"/park flyer, flying through tight areas, like through the neighbor's gazebo, through tree branches, etc. I realized that as I approach the target (neighbor's porch door) and the space narrows, I have to make small, precise movements to accomplish this. The sticks are mostly at dead center at this point and a little too sensitive for me taste. Now I understand that I can change this through those settings in Betaflight. Thanks for the video, Joshua!

I am loving the fact that we can fly it everywhere, including at home, but the rates were too high. I had no idea how to change that or even how to understand it. Thanks to you, I've learned something today 😀😉

    Steele has high rates at full stick deflection but he uses Super Rate and RC Expo to change the Rate curve so that the center is more doughy. Look at Stingerswarms rates, his are exactly like Steeles but with a load of Expo added onto it.

    Hey I just wanted to say thank you for the videos!! I appreciate you taking the time to explain everything and have it make sense. I just bought my first drone from a friend who races/freestyles and tuning it down made it much more manageable. I felt like there was a huge disconnect from the simulator to the real drone and i found it in my friends tuning. I can not wait until i can fly it comfortably in those values.

    Thanks, Joshua. I watch almost all of your videos. This was definitely one of the most enlightening for me. I learned recently when playing around with them that I prefer slightly slower rates for my freestyle. I think Le Drib is similar but I actually prefer slower more fluid movements and they are much easier to achieve with slower rates. I've flown mostly with rates over 1,000 deg/s and turning them down to around 500 - 700 made things feel much better to me. Now that you've taught me the theory behind each I feel very confident in dialing them in to my exact preference. Thank you very much for making this video. 👍

    I know this is old, but you should do a video on throttle expo and midpoint as well. This is what has helped me the most since the very sensitive throttle is what I was fighing the most. My early simulator flights and then again when I moved to my physical quad were full of throttle over correction. Put your throttle position on your OSD with a flat curve, find out where your quad is neutrally bouyant for both your hover in place and where you fly level. Then set the midpoint somewhere in the middle of those number (worked well for me) and then add in some throttle expo. the more expo you put there, the more 'sticky' your throttle will get to that mid position. So you can more easily hold a level line. This was actually quite hard for me on my physical quad because it was so damn touchy on throttle it hovers stable at like 15% throttle. That is WAY too touchy for my stupid fingers, heh.

    Well over due ,but a really good straight forward and short explanation video. I have been really trying hard to get an understanding of this and about a week ago I decided just to spend a entire day playing around with rates and tweeking
    my PIDS and as a result accidently discovered how much of a difference in flight performance this made between using 5" props RC rate low Super Rate high and 6"props RC Rate high Super Rate low ! I had been trying to tune and reduce vibration on my quad when flying 6" props and getting nowhere ,but after reversing the rates and slight tweek in the PIDS ,it made a huge difference ,no more vibration and smother rolls and pitches.Funny thing is just prior to your video Timmy RC made a similar video "I think from my request" and explained the subject really well and I agree with you ,to understand this you have to just play around with rates to see how they feel for you as its a personal thing ,everyone is going to be different .

    Very helpful.
    I've had a hard time tuning rates, keep bouncing up and down looking for the feel I want. I almost had what I wanted using radio rates, but transferring them to Betaflight has been harder than I expected.
    Betaflight doesn't translate from standard "radio" rates well and seems to require a different approach. I think now I understand the Betaflight tools better. I'm hoping once I learn how to use them properly, I'll find that Betaflight outperforms my radio setup, and it will be nice to be doing it as intended.
    Thanks!

    • @patrickcol
      @patrickcol 7 лет назад +1

      Which kind of begs the question, why did you transfer them from the radio?

    • @scottmarshall6766
      @scottmarshall6766 7 лет назад

      A couple of reasons, I'm looking for a better setup, to free up a switch on my radio (a secondary concern), and Joshua recommended that I use the Betaflight Rates during a livechat. I should have started right out using the Betflight system, it's the "right" way to set up a quad.
      I started tuning rates in the radio back when I began to get serious about quad flying because it was familiar and it helped my control a lot, especially having dual rates.
      I've now progressed to where I think the Betaflight system would help me fly better, additionally, I don't want to train myself to use only my unique system.

    Great descriptions, I've always wondered what the differences are between super rates and expo since you can create the same curve using different settings between these two. This clears that up a bit.

    At 2:55 you mentioned that you like to keep your yaw rate lower so you don't have to deflect the stick as much. Wouldn't a lower rate mean you would have to deflect the stick more though? Referencing your F1 car vs. Pickup truck analogy, the lower rates would mean more wheel (or stick in this case) deflection to get less output? Or is there something I'm not getting there?
    Apologies if this question has already been answered. I looked through the first 50 or so comments and didn't see anyting

    great video! somehow all week, topics that I have been researching or looking deeper into, you've released a video covering. bags, smartport, cmos cams and now rates (which i've been toying with all week.)
    one thing I've been doing to try to get a better understanding of the feel of the changes was tweeking numbers in the liftoff simulator, which uses a copy of betaflight and is pretty accurate, at least enough to feel differences and figure out what I want to try out in real life.

    Joshua, great video per usual. One point I'm not sure you got across quite clearly. RC-expo actually softens the quad movement around the center of the stick. In other words it gives you a wider band of stick movement to be more precise within. If that's what you meant then I just didn't pick it up that way when I listened.

    Another excellent video JB. I've been looking for a decent video that explains Rates well for a while and tend to only come across PID tuning videos which assume everyone understands Rates.
    I actually started out setting my rates based on the Freestyle Dynamic preset in the Liftoff simulator as that's what I got used to in the simulator and it actually worked much better than I expected, but based on your video I have a lot more idea on where to go from there now, as I'm still not 100% happy with it and I also need to do PID tuning on my quad, but have held off doing so as most videos suggest using your normal rates to tune with and I don't really have a rate I'm 100% comfortable with yet.

    Great stuff. Everything made sense to me but your comment on YAW. I get that you want to move the YAW less while you manage the throttle (theoretically). My (limited) experience with tuning rates had me moving the YAW RC rate down down down because I kept overturning the quad - changing my planned sweeping curves to abrupt stops. Is this a rookie problem, or is it likely this is my best personal YAW rate due to my left thumb's superstrong horizontal motion!

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 лет назад

      The exact value depends on you personally. My point is just that I don't want very much S.Rate or Expo on yaw because I don't want a soft center-stick.

    Hi Joshua,
    I think tuning rates depends on whether you are a pincher flier on the sticks vs. a thumb flier. Less precision makes the rates seem more out of control and perhaps faster/ harder to control. I use slower rates because I am a thumb flier. What do you think? Thanks for the great instructions!

  • @PinchTune
    @PinchTune 7 лет назад

    Interesting to see Joshua. That bit at 14:45. When people started getting accustomed to using super rate, the unwritten rule was "don't use expo". I never bought into that and I've always added extra expo. This simply because you can get a curve with rate and super rate, but there are specific curves you can't get without adding expo. The math only adds up to so much. I like a lot of expo, because I freestyle and race with the same rates. At one time I was running 1.4/.72/.45. I've been pushing my rates further and further down to improve my racing, yet still be able to freestyle. Now I'm at 1.25/.71/35... But as you can see, I always add some extra expo.

    Can I give the video more than one thumbs up?!?! We always hear about tuning PID... tuning PID... or someone will say "these are my rates". But until now, no one had gone into detail about what makes rates your own. Thank you so much!
    Now my only question that may be out of your field a bit... What about the rates and PIDs on my 12" video drone with iNav? Racing and freestyle are only two of the three main segments of the hobby. And it's almost impossible to find any videos about aerial videography setup.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 лет назад

      For a video drone I think you want pretty low rates. Really, it's almost always in autolevel isn't it?

    • @TroyNahrwold
      @TroyNahrwold 7 лет назад

      Joshua Bardwell That's part of the setup problem. I'm sure I just need to spend more time working on it, but GPS mode has its own PIDs for velocity, position and surface(?!), heading has its own P, but nothing else... Barometer has its own PIDs.. Angle/horizon has a level strength adjustment... Maghold has its own rate setting that is (I don't know.. Yaw? Pitch? Roll? Added? Separate?)
      iNav is just a step over and above even the complexity of betaflight. I guess I just need to keep digging into documentation and groups because the few people that do videos don't go into the depth that you do, unfortunately.

    It seems people adjust stuff on the right first before the actual individual pids, then like everything they adjusted is more so for "to the plastic" or near full stick movements. Then its like well are you adjusting your rates to how you prefer to fly, or are you adjusting then trying to manage flying at some rates your not accustomed to.
    I guess technically you could do either or if your a hands on person and can understand and dig down to realize what to tune or back off/add onto.

    but you are making a tiny mistake, the super rate does not change the center stick(or at least only minimally). I just looks like that because the graph changes its size. You can see this if you compare only RC rate with RC rate + Super rate, they have the same inclination in the middle

    I don't get using expo on top of S rate. Why not just lower RC rate?

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 лет назад +11

      Lowering RC rate would reduce the rate across the entire curve.
      You could achieve a similar effect to adding Expo, by reducing RC rate and increasing S.Rate. But that would give only large steps of change. Adding a small amount of Expo gives a subtle and nuanced control of the curve.

  • @a_mouse6858
    @a_mouse6858 3 года назад

    Super rate multiplies the linear rate (y=bx) times a factor of 1/(1-a*x). The slope of bx/(1-ax) at x = 0 is b. Thus super rate has no effect on sensitivity near the mid point of the sticks. I disagree with the statement at 13:13 that super rate softens sensitivity at center stick (that's what expo does). A major benefit of super rate is that it has no impact on center sensitivity - it only comes into play at higher deflections, allowing the pilot to adjust this independently of center sensitivity.
    The way I like to think about this is that expo allows you to soften the center sensitivity while preserving max rates. The problem is that we are seldom flying with the sticks at full throw, so in practice it is a painful iterative process to adjust linear rate and expo to get the center sensitivity and high deflection sensitivity worked out. In contrast, super rate lets you optimize the center the way you like it, and then go nuts on the high deflection rates without messing up your previous center adjustments.

    I think rates is quite subjective & depends on what you are used to & style you develop.
    I have never raced, so only freestyle. I used to fly with pretty high rates, as you say about 1200. Then this last summer I decided to soften my rates, eventually I finished with 780 roll/pitch & 1170 yaw. It made such a huge difference in smoothness! I think for freestyle its better to have low rates so you can have smooth movements. The key is to get them just enough so your full stick gives you enough to snap.
    But of course I think everyone will develop their own preference.

    Thanks Joshua, Thanks, thank, thanks alot.. Your explaining about rate in fpv and you take f1 steering as sample let me 100%understand what actually rate means in fpv stick controller.. I see many video about rate just to understand before i move my thorttle at first time.. All my fpv such a drone, transmitter, lipo, charger and everything has delivered... Now im just want to bind, set betaflight,flightmode,rate and all and start fly.. And what your opinion about my first quad?? Iflight turbobee120rs v4.. And im gonna use 2×2s 300mAh lipo and 1×3s 300mAh lipo for my first fly? Are that lipo ok? Im afraid high rating mAh will get my drone will go down everywhere..

    I don't know why PID tuning is such a subjective topic... is there some sort of sensor array or algorithm missing? I mean variable cam cars can shift valve timing on the fly to optimize efficiency...

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 лет назад +2

      Maybe someday we can do this.

    • @fabianaufdermaur6051
      @fabianaufdermaur6051 7 лет назад

      I think you are mixing something up. Valve timing doesn't (shouldn't) change the effective output of the motor compared to the steering/motor input. As you already said it only optimizes efficiency. That would be more like something the ESC's would do, some kind of pulse timing optimisation. PID and Rate tuning is how the craft reacts to your input. They don't have to much to do with efficient flying.
      Plus there are some adaptive methods that can be used in betaflight like adaptive filtering and PID taper

      the problem is with such a variety of frames, motors, props, electronics, BF currently tries to cater to all and be infinitely tunable. There is no standardisation of equipment and hence inability to reproduce resulting flight characteristics. Even Josh has trouble sometimes with tuning his quads despite having done that hundreds of times. cheers

    Hi Josh, love your videos! I followed your build for my DJI FPV build on an iFlight DC5 HD frame. This was my first build and I’m new to FPV. I have little experience with tiny indoor drones. I feel that my sticks are very very sensitive so it’s been difficult to control the drone. Again I followed your build without making any changes. What’s your suggestions on rates for a full DJI setup (DJI transmitter, air unit and goggles)? Thank u 🙏

  • @kaarleenzz
    @kaarleenzz 7 лет назад

    I have 2 profiles - 1 freestyle, 1 racing. Racing is ~450 deg/sec and freestyle is ~900, but they feel nearly identical in most of the stick travel.
    I basically tuned my freestyle rates so that the middle to ~75% stick deflection feels pretty much the same as my racing rates. This way it is pretty easy to switch from racing to freestyle as they feel nearly identical apart from the very ends.
    You can do this by setting a stick to a certain position in 'race' profile, looking at the degrees and then trying to match it in your freestyle profile by adjusting expo/super rate. Do this in multiple stick positions along the curve.

    • @kaarleenzz
      @kaarleenzz 7 лет назад +3

      sure, here they are:
      Racing: RC Rate: 1, Super Rate 0.56, RC Expo 0.0
      Freestyle: RC Rate 1, Super Rate 0.77, RC Expo 0.3
      All axis are the same (Roll, Pitch, Yaw). D Setpoint Weight is at 2.55 and D Setpoint transition at 1.
      Racing rates are pretty similar to what EnvyAstro flys with. Freestyle rates are a bit milder/less direct in the middle.
      If you try them out, let me know how you like them :)

    Every instructional video I have seen shows pilots configuring their rates on betaflight. From my understanding, betaflight only interfaces with the flight controller. If you use this method, how should rates on the transmitter be set? Everything weighted at 100 with no expo, default settings? How about for the opposite? If you like to set your rates on your transmitter, should betaflight rates be set to default linear rates? This option makes more sense to me because then they can be tinkered with easily in the field.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 лет назад

      Adjust subtrim and endpoints in the transmitter so the channels go from 1000 to 2000 at full deflection. And 1500 in the center.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  5 лет назад +1

      For racing, I think max of about 600 dps is desirable, and as low as 200 or 300 dps may give better precision. Add a little expo to give more center stick control. Personally I like zero S.Rate and like 0.6 expo with RC rate used to adjust the overall curve.

  • @michaelwahl5669
    @michaelwahl5669 6 лет назад

    Thanks for the video. As always, very informative. In one of your examples you increase the RC rate and decrease the S rate to get to a specific max rate. But how is this different to setting your max rate with RC and then simply dialing in EXPO?

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 лет назад

      Expo and S-rate don't have the exact same curve. S-Rate gives a sharper transition to full stick rates where expo gives a smoother transition. A good way to think about it is that raising S-rate increases max rate while leaving center stick mostly un changed. Expo softens center stick while leaving max rate unchanged.

    • @michaelwahl5669
      @michaelwahl5669 6 лет назад

      I understand but I meant something different: In your example you set 1.55/.70/0.0 (RC/S/Expo). I just tried 2.205/0/0.6 (RC/S/Expo) and the two rate curves are practically indistinguishable

    • @michaelwahl5669
      @michaelwahl5669 6 лет назад

      Which sort of begs the question why the S rate was introduced in the first place

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 лет назад

      +Michal K rc rate 1.0 and add S Rate until you get to about 90 degrees per second. Add expo for softer center stick if desired.
      You could also try setting rc rate to like 0.85 and raising s rate to get 900 dps. This will give a softer center but with a slightly different mid stick feel.

    Is there any difference in setting the expo on the FC vs the radio? I usually set the expo on my radio so I can adjust in the field.

    • @icp-trek
      @icp-trek 7 лет назад

      From what I've heard you could lose resolution by changing the expo on the radio. Maybe Joshua can confirm that.

    • @JasonScottHamilton
      @JasonScottHamilton 7 лет назад

      I.C Productions interesting. I'd be curious to understand why.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 лет назад +3

      Realistically I think the system has enough resolution that it doesn't matter where you program the rates. However the Betaflight approach is more likely to produce a smooth curve without any sharp transitions. Most radios let you set like a 5 point or 7 point curve but Betaflight is calculating a mathematical function. So in that sense, I think the Betaflight rate curve is preferable.

    • @JasonScottHamilton
      @JasonScottHamilton 7 лет назад

      Joshua Bardwell isn't the expo curve from a transmitter derived from a function as well? Assuming the expo math in the transmitter is the same (which it should be) I'm thinking theoretically it should be exactly the same since the order of the multiplication shouldn't matter, right?
      I think we need some science!

      The rates I just set on my Taranis don't look the same as when I view them on Betaflight. If I have 2 models on the Taranis for the one quad (FC) previously set with different rates on the radio, will adjusting the rates on Betaflight overide the both of my 'radio model' rates?

    Can't you get the curve and endpoints be exactly the same as the s-rate curve by increasing both rc-rate and rc-expo instead? The s-rate curve shape doesn't look different to the expo curve shape to me. The only way to prove it is the overlay them on one another using the same deg/s.

    • @JoshuaBardwell

I was curious what simulator would you suggest that might give a proper schooling of adjusting and finding what rates a person wants and then attempts to fly in the SIM instead of having to constantly put your quad up in the air fly come back down adjust put your rates put the quad back up in the air fly come down adjust yours rates and repeat till you get it just right.
