  • In this video, I face off against Jake Barlett in Animation Combat, the ultimate motion graphics challenge. We each tackle a brief to create the best logo animation in 30 minutes. Along the way, we face challenges from the client including ridiculous notes, unreasonable feedback, and brutal critique.

    I really love how this mirrors an actual client experience, but with great humor and curveballs thrown in -- even down to the project manager telling the client "no problem!" right near the end!

      I'd absolutely love to do more. What other briefs/challengers would you like to see?

      @@BenMarriott i think the recipe is already in a great space (initial brief, timed challenge, mid-challenge curve balls).
      Some things that could mix it up is putting in restrictions (only typography, specific styles, set colour palettes, only 'x'-type shape layers, etc.)
      Also different guests help freshen up approaches etc. Maybe even tournament style progression?
      Would love to discuss further if you're keen!

    I enjoyed watching this and felt the stress haha, for 30 minutes these are awesome, also idk about the client but from an artistic standpoint I personally prefer Ben's animation

      I thought the same too. I am not a professional designer. I just do that as a hobby, but I definitely believe Ben's version is better and more aesthetically pleasing, but I guess the project wasn't to appeal for a young modern client, rather an old-style client.. which sometimes can be hard especially if you are a young designer influenced by modern styles.

    OMG, this is amazing! Jake and you have taught me so much through the years.
    You should start an Ultimate Motion Designer tournament with all the lots from SOM and all the heavyweights from Skillshare and RUclips.
    Mid way through the tournament you have to team up to win a challenge against Aaron Blaise or the Bancroft brothers.

    This video was so fun to watch!! Another one where I say I wish I could like it twice.
    16:24 Ben's smirk and shaking of head to jakes presentation lol (not trying to cause a stir here but I saw it 🤭)
    The clients emails were hillarious and the inbetween art for the stages (like 12:50) was super cool.

    Loved this! It's like watching my two favourite school teachers duke it out for our entertainment! Dioramas looked amazing too :D I think my favourite parts were watching Ben's reaction to the first logo Andrew put up and then the reaction to not trimming the work area for the final render. Can relate SO hard 😂
