    I just watched your video much later than when you first put it out. I love Dimensions kits and have quite a few of them. You had a lot that I don't have yet. On the half cross stitch, the way to keep them from warping your fabric is to make the stich part on the back to be vertical as much as you can. If you stich like it's continental stich, you are actually going over two squares on the back. So when working from left to right work as normal. For me, that's working bottom left to top right. Your stitch on the back is vertical. When going from right to left, start the stitch in the top right corner and go to the bottom left. This will keep the back stitch vertical again. I did a picture called Lost No More, and when I did the background, I noticed my work was completely slanted in that area. I took it all out and re-did it, and it turned out much better. Hope this helps. Love your stitching.

      Thank you so much for the tips! I'm pretty sure that the way you describe is the way I do my half stitches now. Live and learn, lol! I haven't had many warped patterns lately! Happy stitching!

    I really enjoyed your Dimensions parade. Dimensions, Sunset and Monarch were prolific when I started stitching 20-25 years ago. I have been working on "Teddy & Kittens" off and on for about 11 years, and determine to finish it this year. You have one like it in the series - it may be "Bear with Honey" or something like that.. I just got "Victorian Charm" and looking forward to starting it next January as I have at least 20 charts (not all Dimensions) in my stash, and I promised to start a few of them this year. Take care and stay safe!

    • @calico_whimsy
      @calico_whimsy  4 года назад

      Thank you! So you may know, did those companies all merge into what we know as Dimensions now? I've always wondered. Ah, Victorian Charm is such a popular pattern and a great choice for a Jan start! I know Teddy and kittens and it is so cute...maybe this will be the year for my Eagle and your Teddy to be promoted to finishes :)

    Really enjoyed the video. Beautiful kits & finishes. Oh my gosh, the sheer amount of french knots in Winter Geese would’ve probably sent me over the edge, lol! But, its so beautiful! I had decided about a week ago, after thinking about what stitching goals I might want to set for this year, that one goal is to finish the rest of the back stitching on Feasting Frenzy, so that I can finally get that done. We’ll see if I do. Finnegan, my fox, has been calling to me lately, so I may have to bring him out again really soon. Thanks for sharing this, & hope you & your family stay safe during this whole virus “crisis”.

    • @calico_whimsy
      @calico_whimsy  4 года назад +1

      I know what you mean about that backstitching in ?Feasting Frenzy. It's so hard to make ourselves do it. That's how I felt everytime I looked at my eagle and I just knew I needed to tackle the backstitching on him 2011. When I finally made myself do it, it just took me one evening and a little bit of the next morning! Why did I wait to long??? :) Yeah, my fox has been calling to me, too. Maybe when you bring yours out, I'll do the same...maybe. I'm thinking of dedicating April to Orchids and Hummingbird. Can't decide!

      Thank you! Silent Flight is gorgeous and I've almost bought it many times....but as you can see I think I have enough Eagle charts for now :) I definitely have enjoyed having a focus piece each month and will try to continue with that throughout the year. I hope you give that a try. I got a little off track in March working on some new small projects, but come April, I'm going to pick an old wip and make some progress! Happy Stitching!

      Thanks for stopping by Jenn. I do think it's interesting how similar yet different our collections are! You have quite a bit more florals, which I'm always tempted by, but never pull the trigger on. Also, I'm quite sure if I ever went to France, I would be be all about the french inpired kits! So is the one you added to your wishlist, the Chickadees on a branch? There is a very similar counted cross stitch to COAB that is hard to find, but I can't remember the name at the moment.

    Hi Calico! What a fun video to watch- I'm a big Dimensions fan so I love all these types of videos. It was really funny to watch you pull out the Dimensions Petite of the flowers & hummingbird, because that's exactly what I was stitching while I watched your video!! I can say it's an easy stitch, so don't be scared to start it :) Also, the Baby Bluejays piece is stunning. You were actually my inspiration to go hunt this piece down (you showed it in one of your early videos) and it's now in my stash, I've tried to stitch it twice now but I'm finding it soooo tedious... Which is such a disappointment lol. But I love the finished result so much that I'm going to stick with it, and maybe do like one thread a day, as your friend suggested. I don't want to give up on it! Anyways thanks for the video and stay safe out there!

      Hi Robin! Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Luda also left a comment about the hummingbird kit being easy, so I think I've decided that will be my next start! As for the Blue Jay kit...yay for finding it!! It's funny that my mind remembers it being easy, but it may have to do with where our mind is at the time. One thread a day seems to be a nice compromise to get through those tedious projects. Happy stitching and stay safe!

    I have a completed 1980s “Cat with Floral Border” kit (5” x 7”) made by Golden Bee stitchery. Not sure if they even exist anymore. Sure looks like a Dimensions off shoot. It has that same little plastic blue frame that I see in your little Bunnies and Babies 80’s cross stitch. I think as far as home decor goes, the 80’s were all about slate blue and mauve kind of like the 60’s were all about harvest gold and avocado green. Thank you for sharing your wonderful collections.

      @@calico_whimsy I was very excited! I would like to switch out the fabric - do you think there is enough floss to go with 32 count? I don’t want to use linen but I get nervous when I change counts as it can be hard to match floss.

      @@lucianafuntowicz It's hard to tell with the older kits if there will be enough floss. I have only run out 1 time and they sent me some extra floss right away. I say give it a try, but stitch the important parts first, just in case. Also, the DMC conversions have always looked almost identical to me, so you can always fall back on that. 😊

    Hi Christine - spending some time with you while I kit up Vintage Birds. Just a note about Cardinals on a Sled - DO NOT USE THE FABRIC IN THE KIT. I did and it was horrible This is the kit I started back stitching after 25 years of not stitching. I love how it turned out but OMG that fabric was almost plastic-ie (not a word). Enjoying your Dimensions show. Back to the video ! Just finished. I loved seeing all your beautiful kits wips and finishes. When I finish my Finery of Nature - if you are interested in "not the full kit" I'll send it your way - but the Kit would be amazing of course. Take care - Becky

      So happy to have encouraged and saved you during this trying time :) I completely agree that the piece does not need the the French knots nor the hassle they cause. I dare say this aloud, but I'm considering taking them all out, and re-assessing wether I want to put them back in again...maybe smaller and without connecting them in the back. Thank you! I just recently pulled this out as I was going through all my finishes and remembered how gorgeous it is. However, after having it put away for awhile, the first thing I noticed was how big my snowflakes were! They were too distracting so I took them ALL out! Now, I just have to decide if I should add them back smaller, or leave them off. My husband thinks it looks much better without the snowflakes, but I can't decide. It would be a lot of work. I can't believe that I have only just discovered your channel! I also love stitching Dimensions and I am just about to complete Gracious Era. May I ask, when you stitch large areas of half cross do you work across and back or up and down? Lovely collection of kits, thank you for sharing😄

      @calico_whimsy  4 года назад +1

      Hi Mariam, so glad you found me! I've seen pictures, and Gracious Era is stunning when finished! Lots of snowflakes in that one, too. As for the half cross stitches, I have no rhyme or reason to how I stitch them. Higgledy-piggledy is how I would describe my method :). I do try to remain cognizant of trying to conserve floss since I'm always worried of running out. I sometimes lose track of the stitches in areas like the sky and it becomes a 'make it up as I go' kinda thing! How do you do it?

    • @mariamel-lakany7331
      @mariamel-lakany7331 4 года назад

      @@calico_whimsy The snowflakes are what I am working on now, I left them all until the end and so it is proving to be quite a task. I usually work my half crosses horizontally but on my current piece Gracious Era I worked them vertically after watching some stitch alongs with Luda. I think both ways work depending on the space you are filling and with Dimensions you have to be quite flexible as they are very often scattered :)💜

    • @calico_whimsy
      @calico_whimsy  3 года назад +2

      It's off center because instead of starting in the center and working out, I now prefer to start in the upper left corner and working from there. When I do this, I just have to guesstimate based on the finished design size where to start stitching. Sometimes it ends up off center 😊

  • @kimmduncan

    This was a great video Christine! I really enjoyed seeing all of your Dimensions kits, wips, and finishes. I love how you shared stories of how and why you obtained them. You certainly have a lot of wonderful kits to choose from when you want a new start.
    I’m really impressed with the variety of stitching projects in Dimensions kits, especially in “Enough Coffee” (combines embroidery and cross stitch) and “Snowman and Friends” (love the scarf fringe).
    KITS: Of all of your kits, I would love to see you stitch “Wolf”. Even though I’m not usually interested in wolves, this one is beautifully done. The eyes are so intense.
    Some of the others that I really liked are: “Watering Cans” is just a delightful and happy pattern. Maybe you could convert the painted background area to your pattern by using half stitches color matched to their painting. It would give you that color to highlight those areas only instead of all over color of a hand dyed.
    I think “State Birds” would look really great on a green mottled hand dyed fabric to unify all of the birds.
    “Winter Housing” is another really fun pattern. I agree that it would look great without the words.
    I think “Chair With Flowers” would be fun to do just to see how the effects evolve as you stitch. I, too, love charts that show light and shadow effects. I have one by Barbara and Cheryl Designs called “in Full Bloom”, that I think you would love. It has a lot of shadow play.
    With “The Joy of Gardening” you could stitch just the outer frame and cut out the center to create a mat for a photo.
    WIPS: “Orchids and Hummingbird” is such a surprise stitched up. I did not care for the image, but the stitching that you have already done is exquisite. The colors are so delicate.
    Your “Balloon Glow”, looks wonderful. I am so impressed with how much you have done already. This is such a fun SAL! Thanks for the shout out.
    I’m amazed at how much you have gotten done on “Eagle’s Majesty in one month. I cannot wait to see the waterfall completed.
    FINISHES: These were my favorites: “Robin’s Nest”, “Butterfly Forest” (I adore butterflies), Debbie Mumm “Autumn”, “Glory of Autumn”, “Winter Geese”. You did a beautiful job on all of them. I actually happen to love the effect of the French knots on “Winter Geese” because I think they add another dimension to the piece.
    Lastly, thanks for the tip about finding cross stitch on Mercari.com!
